6:00 am
now, interestingly enough, ola economy an ankle, the commander who was with her there from russia he was up he holds the record now for the most days in space, one all all-time record. he was up for more than a year this time around anyway, she did a lot of great work if there about six months easier way to think about it as you did a research into stem cell research the 3d printing of heart tissues, operating robots on earth from space. and fire safety in microgravity among many other things. this really was a great flight for her and what she said all along the hardest part in all of this time away from her family, which i can well imagine astronauts go through a lot of that henri ad is a long time that's a long time to be a way that's a long time to be a way it's, it's yeah, yeah. >> we know a little bit about that because you our jobs take us away a pretty good bit, but nothing like that. not usually. >> did you know that there was a non-profit that oversees emojis? tom foreman?
6:01 am
>> yeah. i'm on the board that explains a lot that we're preparing. >> preparing one based on, you it's got lots of raised eyebrows. >> yeah, exactly a crying face emoji telles. >> thank you very much. i appreciate it. a brand new hour of cnn news central starts right now election day has already begun. >> early voting is happening in three states, but we are 42 days away now until the actual election today, brand new polling this morning showing one of the tightest races ever more on the new numbers from key battleground states is ahead. and breaking news overnight, at least 100 people hello, her dead as israel escalates his attacks on hezbollah inside lebanon, this is a fast-developing story this morning we are live on the ground with the very latest and also more breaking news for you. we are getting a little newer. look at a letter the suspect in the second attempted assassination of donald trump
6:02 am
brand new details. what he wrote before he was arrested as he's expected in court this morning. i'm sara sidner john berman, kate is out this morning. this is cnn new central out this morning that shows donald trump has a lead in a key battle well, ground, state and a slight edge within the margin of error and two others, this polling from the new york times and siena college shows donald trump up by five arizona that it's outside of the margin of error. error georgia in north carolina, both within the margin of error, all comes as donald trump has yet to speak publicly about his pick for governor in north carolina, mark robinson, he is the current lieutenant governor. >> his campaign in chaos. some of his top staffers resign this fall close the cnn kfile report
6:03 am
that uncovered those inflammatory comments on a porn website forum. cnn's kristen holmes is with does trump and j.d. vance, they go to north carolina. they don't talk about mark robinson. is we're going to see more of that we certainly expect your john. >> and by that i just your introduction there sounded like political mad libs. i would have never guessed this is what we were going to be talking about at this time when it came to mark robinson, but we don't expect any mentioned of mark robinson but then he had a rally over the weekend. mark robinson wasn't invited, was nowhere to be found, and we haven't heard donald trump either disavow the comments or called for mark robinson to step down. now, this comes as a lot of republicans are concerned having mark robinson at the top of the ticket in that critical battleground state of north carolina could damage donald trump down the road on election day, you showed those polling numbers about two point difference here. well, within the margin of error and there's a lot of concern. there's a lot of wiggle room there. but the question is whether or not if
6:04 am
mark robinson were to step down, is there a mechanism to replace them? we don't believe there is. what would hurt donald trump more having no one at the top of the ticket or having mark robinson at the top of the ticket. and that question is really on answerable right now. and again, that's why we don't expect donald trump at this point in time to ask for mark robinson to step back from this race or to mention him at all. again, we are expecting to see donald trump in north carolina likely the later this week, we also don't expect to see him campaigning anywhere near mark robinson. i do want to mention one other thing, john, because donald trump today he has a big week and a lot of these battleground states he's going to be in the battleground state of pennsylvania. he's holding a various events, including a rally that is another state. they are deeply concerned about. they have seen the numbers coming out of them again, well within the margin of error, but they thought that donald trump would be doing a little bit better at this point in pennsylvania. so there's a lot of concern around this state. we're expect him to go there several more times before
6:05 am
election day. >> john, at this stage, just 43 days left when the candidates are not in a battleground state. that's the big question is why? aren't they there today? his travels very important though, kristen holmes, thank you very much, sara. all right. here now, former burgum 2024 presidential campaign spokesman, lance trover and democratic strategist and joan see, right. thank you both so much for coming in this morning. we were talking about this new polling. there's a gender gap which has been talked about quite a bit these days, men, 48% for harris versus 52% for trump women, 55 for harris versus 44 for trump. you see the numbers there here's what trump had to say about women over the weekend women are poorer than they were four years ago. our less healthy than they were four years ago, are less safe on the
6:06 am
streets than they were four years ago. >> are more stressed and depressed and unhappy than they were for years ago i will fix all of that. women. i will fix all of that women will be happy, healthy, confident, and free of that comment from donald trump? there was quite a bit there. could jump into well it's par for the course, is a friendly reminder that president trump, former president trump has no connective tissue to a very powerful and consistent voting bloc in this country. and that's when and you look at the fact there will be ten states in this country with that, we have reproductive freedom in reproductive justice on the ballot and it's quite clear the president does not have a plan or have words to reach those voters. and if you look at every single election that has happened particularly ballot initiatives that include women having a say so in being trusted with the health care decisions democrats continue to
6:07 am
outperform the narrative. i'm thankful we have a woman at the top of the ticket, but more importantly, i'm thankful we have a party who understand that women issues are our issues and issues should be women issues lance, do you think this is the right way to sort of talk about the issues that women have you know, he's saying a lot of different things there. but oddly says they won't be thinking about abortion. what was that? >> i think what he's talking about is the fact that there's more on the ballot and issues than just abortion for both men and women out there in this election cycle, i just look at the new york times sienna poll that came out today. and there are still some long-term warning signs for the harris campaign the economy, immigration, cost of living issues are all at the top of mind of voters and donald trump continues leading on all of those issues. that is something everyone is focused on and part of the reason is that she doesn't want to do interviews. she doesn't want to really outline any of her policy positions 60 to 70% of this country blades we are on the wrong track and 67% of this
6:08 am
country believes we are on the wrong track. people know donald trump, they know his policies. that's why he's doing fairly well in these polls. they don't know a lot about kamala harris. and so i think he's speaking to these issues which affect all americans across the board antoinette, you want to jump in wetlands. >> i just fundamentally disagree with that. the fact that matt is when you talk about concepts of a plan where he talked about drill, baby, drill or no one can pin down where he stands on issues like ivf and others, and the fact is donald trump and j.d. vance have been on the record agreement they will criminalize a woman for making their own health care decisions. most people, including republicans, cannot articulate one single issue that donald trump stands for when it comes to everyday americans. when have we heard from the former president about his plan on housing? when have we talked when have we heard from him about a plan on work wages, and wealth? we've heard from him on the fact that he wants to undo the affordable care act. we've heard we also heard from him that he thinks somehow another that black
6:09 am
haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio who are eating cats and dog. that's not a plan that's not something the american people care about, but on the other hand, the journey for kamala harris, this woman of color twice as hard half as much and somehow never this minimally adequate standard for the former president seems to be okay in the republican party lands, how important do you think another potential debate is? it kamala harris has said that she will do one here on cnn. donald trump is not committing emitted is this something that needs to happen? again i think that's a decision for the trump campaign to make. >> i mean, if you look at the polling that just came out overnight, you see he's doing fairly well. i understand it's a snapshot in time, but again, i just want to go back to that's that's pretty rich for someone who literally will not do one unscripted interview here. she will not do anything unscripted. she doesn't want to talk billion dollars and there's a billion in free
6:10 am
earned media every single day out there. and all you have to do is look at this times polling from over the weekend that says voters are very concerned about their financial future and they look at kamala harris and all they're seeing is the past and her voting record and being number two to joe biden mean the proof's in the pudding of what came out overnight. i'm not just making stuff up here yeah. >> a lot of those things at the margin. go ahead. go ahead and run land. >> i would just say he respectfully, i think that's a mis-rep misrepresentation on the fact and some communities we call it a lack. the fact that she sat for interviews time and time again the challenge is, you would not embrace how she introduced or how she interviewed with the american people the most important introduced she can't do it with the american people because the american people are ultimately going to decide whether or not she get a political promotion. if you look at what donald trump has done what quality and quantity are two different things. he rambles and last for minutes, minutes, minutes, and then some i know that you think that's
6:11 am
okay. in fact, is donald trump has not embraced or even discuss trump's project 2025, the impact it will have on communities all across this country. kamala harris has talked about fed policy, agenda she's talked about what it means and her record. we all are proud of because there is not a constituency in this country who have not benefited from her time as vice president we are expecting to see more of her economic policy this week. >> i do want to talk about an issue that is being talked about a lot in north carolina, which is one of the states as being very hard hard-fought and looks like the numbers are about even there right now, several top operatives on republican mark robinson's campaign have now stepped down. where do you think robinson goes from here and it does seem lance that the trump folks have really backed away from him. he was not there as he usually is at trump side in north carolina oh, it's obvious that the robinson campaign has done and over with and i think you can look at what happened over the
6:12 am
weekend. >> they didn't have him on stage they didn't talk about them at all. i mean, that's a decision and i think the trump campaign will address that further going down the road, you saw the staffers quit over the weekend. that was probably the rams, definitely the right decision to do but i give the voters, the voters are savvy in north carolina. this idea that he's at the top of the ticket. donald trump is actually at the top of the ticket and voters will be making their decision based it's on him. they're savvy, they're i think they can discern the difference between the two of them. so i'm not super concerned about that in north carolina alright. >> lance trover and antwan see right. thank you both so much. appreciate your time this morning, john. >> all right. breaking this morning, officials say at least 182 people have now been killed in lebanon as the israeli military is conducting i think what they're calling extensive strikes on hezbollah targets the idf issued a warning to civilians to leave areas where the iranian backed militant group operates. let's get right to cnn international diplomatic editor nic robertson, who is in jerusalem now, what is the latest you're hearing at this point, nic
6:13 am
injured according to the lebanese ministry of health, this he's figures look higher than the figures have any spate of conflict between israel and hezbollah since 2000 this is a very serious escalation that's underway right now. the idf says it's conducting precise, proactive air strikes to degrade hezbollah's was infrastructure and capability. they are advising lebanese civilians who may believe that there are hezbollah operative it's or installations or weapon systems close to where they live to leave their homes. some of the strikes today over 300 by the idf. so far in lebanon have been far north of beirut, the capital well up into the back of that ali citizens, there an hour ago, were given two hours to leave their homes by the idf if they believed hezbollah was close to that, close to their location since so that's is due to
6:14 am
expire in about an hour's time. so this does seem to foreshadow another round of attacks, deep in the back of valley going to where israel believes that some of hezbollah's weapons storage sites are that the aim appears by israel at the moment to limit hezbollah's ability to be at a fire into fire into israel. we do know that some of the hezbollah missiles have landed in israel today according to the police here, one on house was hit directly. the two people in the house were in their safe room. they weren't hurt. but the defense minister telling the people of israel today that they must observe with for obedience the directions of the home front command. and that's the warning system that tells them when to get in their shelters. they're rocket shelters until stay in there long after the sirens go off. so they're not hit by shrapnel. so this is a very tense time that's emerging along the northern border and
6:15 am
deeper into israel at the moment, john nic in terms of rhetoric, what has been promised or threatened from hezbollah since these attacks from israel? we'll have begun over the weekend. >> a funeral for the super group of commanders from the border region the second in command of hezbollah warned to add a warning the of a wider war, of a war without, without an nda, without boundaries. >> so hezbollah is threatening to ratchet up israel is ratcheting up and it does seem to be in a moment of severe escalation all right. >> nic robertson in jerusalem for us, nick, thank you. very much extraordinary tension in the region this morning all right, an urgent manhunt underway for the suspects in a mass shooting that killed four people we've got new details tells them the harris campaign's strategy to win over key voters and latino communities and ammunition, a

6:21 am
donald trump, suspect ryan ruth will be in court in florida this morning on to gun charges after the secret service says he pointed a rifle through the tree-line at trump's golf course in west palm beach. cnn's zach cohen is joining us now, what more can you tell us about this letter and what the contents are? >> yes. sara prosecutors revealing new details about the evidence they've collected as part as part of this investigation. and that includes evidence that may help speak to what ryan ruse intent was. the reason he was there at donald trump's golf course. and that includes a handwritten letter that prosecutors say was left behind for one of his neighbors, and it's states very clearly, quote this was an assassination attempt on donald trump, but i failed you. i tried my best and gave it all the gumption i could muster. it is up to you now to finish the job and i will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job. now, the letter also ended that saying trump quote, ended relations with iran like a child. and now the middle east has unraveled and obviously this speaks again to the
6:22 am
potential intent argument here. we know that reiner there's only currently charged with those two gun charges, both possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. but investigators have continued to try to investigate this broader, bigger assassination case. they're trying to put together more serious charges that they could potentially bring it anytime. and this is really the first pieces of evidence that we've seen prosecutors put forward that could help them bring that bigger case, those more serious charges. now, the other evidence that prosecutors lay out in this memo, i'm include several across cell phones that were found in ryan routes car and one of those cell phones had a google search for how to travel from palm beach where donald trump's golf course is located to mexico. that was highlighted by prosecutors in this memo, sort of piecing together again, what evidence they found sense. ryan ruth was arrested. and since they try to been peace to put together this bigger, more serious case against him, because as you know, sara, initially the fbi and prosecutors made very clear that they viewed this as an
6:23 am
attempted assassination, but that is a harder case to put forward. than the gun charges that they've currently brought against ryan ruth certainly and prosecutors are always looking for what the intent was that letter may be that perfect piece of evidence for them. >> thank you so much that cohen really appreciate it. john right. >> this morning, a manhunt is underway in birmingham, alabama after a shooting in a popular entertainment district left four people dead and 17 injured police believe the attack that happened saturday night targeted in a single individual, but bystanders, they were caught in the crossfire, seen as rafael romo is in birmingham with the latest on this, this morning, rafael, what are you learning? >> john. good morning. there are several key details that officials have revealed that since the shooting, birmingham police say the shooting was not random and stem from an isolated incident were multiple victims were caught in the crossfire. in fact, chief scott thurmond said he believes this it was a targeted hit on one person and the other victims

6:30 am
monolith. what must they do to bring the latino voters into the fold? some of them have broken off and going to, gone to donald trump they need to firstborn morning any campaign needs to treat latino voters like the americans that we are understanding that someone who might speak a different language that we are, we held the same american values that everybody yes. does. so we're interested in not just getting by, but getting ahead in the economy, were interested in educational opportunities for our families, where it makes sure that there's a roof over our head, but housing is important for us. and our families are taken care of, making that appeal to us as americans it is critically important. >> why is that different? because politico has this article and sarah mentioned that the harris campaign, you're quoted in it, that the harris campaign is doing things
6:31 am
differently with latino voters this time, how so? >> well, i can speak about the campaign right now and in contrast, the harris campaign against the trump campaign, the harris campaign's listening. they're treating a seriously, they're treating this like adults and weird thing kind of gimmicks from the trump campaign like nikki jm and misgendering him onstage what's different is that we're being treated seriously were people that campaign understands that the kitchen table politics, the kitchen table issues that are important to us are what we need to hear from leadership. so it's, it is about prices. it's about housing. it's about education and i think the harris campaign has understood that and understood that latinos are interested in more than just the border that we're interested in making sure that our families can do well why do you think though the numbers have shifted and that there is a latino bloc that has started
6:32 am
voting for donald trump they we are again, where americans. we have diverse viewpoints so i think you'll see some numbers of latinos in southwestern states who are more conservative and my buy into the maga rhetoric. but i think you also see significant numbers of people who fundamentally are interested in decency and kindness in a candidate and strong character and somebody who is going to, again uphold those values help our families get ahead and ensure that we have an opportunity that's what i hear from the harris campaign here on the ground and pennsylvania, i hear a campaign that respects us as human beings and does americans i can't, you know i can only speak to what i see here in allentown. i can't speak to latino voters in texas
6:33 am
and arizona, but i can tell you that here we're looking for a candidate that is going to help us get ahead and help us access opportunity for our families, for our children it's interesting because allentown isn't lehigh valley. i went there twice in 2008 to cover white working class voters in allentown. it's a different allentown now, isn't it? >> we're significant over the past 20 years, we've become a majority latino cities. so many people know allentown for the billy joel song and we still, we're still working class and middle-class voters it's just that many of us speak spanish still there's strong dominican, puerto, you can influence here but it's fundamentally the same. allentown in that respect that we still have those basic concerns we want to make sure that we have economic opportunity. want to make sure that there's housing. i think that's one of the things that's compelling about that. harris campaign is that they're talking about investing in 3
6:34 am
million housing units across the united states that will help folks in cities across the united states do a little bit better. we contrast that against the trump campaign who is approached to reducing the cost of housing seems to be mass deportations, as detailed and project 2025 we again, i'll keep coming back to latino voters. are american voters we have these fundamental values that are important to us and that is the opportunity to get ahead and not just get by, we need to see that. i talked to so many people here who are interested in being involved in the economy we're interested in entrepreneurial opportunities, and we resonate with candidates that present a vision for the future that is a way forward for us that's going to be allentown 20 years ago, 50 years ago, and 20 years and 50 years into the future. this is a city that war works hard, that rewards hard work and is

reagan national airport. >> this is cnn breaking news for you. the death toll is rising in lebanon, israel, as israel pounds what it says are hezbollah targets in lebanon, lebanese officials now say at least 182 people have been killed and more than 700 wounded in israeli airstrikes. cnn senior international correspondent ben wedeman in beirut with more information on what else are you hearing about these strikes and what people are doing after being warned by israel that they were coming now, we know so far that at least 300 israeli airstrikes have occurred in southern lebanon and also other parts of the country. >> and the israelis have put out a warning to residents of the bikov valley today east of the country, a very large area telling them that if they live near or in any building that
6:41 am
contains hezbollah weaponry that they should leave immediately and stay at least 1,000 meters away or go take a shelter in nearby schools that's a huge part of the country. and of course, when people hear that their inclination is probably simply to leave the entire area whatsoever. they were given a two hour warning and in fact, within the last half hour, we have seen two israeli warplanes flying north over beirut. and we've also heard drones as well. so what we're seeing is that this is the most intense day of israeli airstrikes. going back to the war of 2006. and as a result, we are seeing a mass exodus of people moving out of the south of lebanon trying to reach safer ground. of course, the worry is that this point there really isn't much safer ground effect. we were just on the phone with one individual who is a resident of the southern lebanese city of
6:42 am
tyre, which is about 25 kilometers north of the israeli border. he said, it has been raining bombs since five a.m. he says he saw several buildings collapse. and these are his words. the city is being emptied of its residents everyone is fleeing and what we're seeing in deed is that the highways going from the south of lebanon towards the capital are absolutely crammed with cars, people leaving in that area, not just one side of the highway. both sides of the highway. everybody is trying to flee north now as a result of these israeli strikes, the lebanese minister of education has announced all classes for all educational institutions are suspended as of tomorrow morning, the lebanese prime minister saying that he's, he's appealed to the united nations and what he all the influential countries to deter israel from carrying out these
6:43 am
strikes. but all words from israel seem to indicate that this is just the beginning of this offensive. this perhaps yet another war between lebanon and israel. >> sara, we're looking, we're looking benefit as jam-packed roads in parts of lebanon. thank you so much for your report. appreciate it. john. >> all right. with us now, is the u.s. ambassador to the united nations, linda thomas greenfield, ambassador. thank you so much for being with us as the un general assembly meets this week, the acting prime minister of lebanon has called on all nations, including the u.s to pressure israel to stop what it calls the aggression in that country what's your response to that we have been clear from day one that we do not want to see this war escalate. >> and that is a message that we have given to both sides. but let us not forget that on october 7 when and hamas
6:44 am
attacked israel, has bola in support of hamas, started to send weapons across the border into israel. we support israel's right to self-defense. but again, we do not want to see this war escalate. that is the message that president biden is giving to both sides of this conflict. >> it clearly has escalated in the last few days. the tension it's higher than we've seen maybe since 2006 between israel and hezbollah in lebanon. how do you think that colors the meetings in the speeches that will take place? you are over the next few days certainly will be something that will be discussed in the course of the job can all assembly and the security council during this week, when we have all of the heads of state in town are messages. >> let us get to assist session
6:45 am
of hostilities in gaza. and that will hopefully bring an end to all of this is bola has been supporting hamas everyone needs to put their efforts behind bringing us to a final cessation of hostilities that will get the hostages out alive. how for more assistance to get to palestinian people in gaza and allow people on the israeli side of the border with lebanon to return to their homes homes and allow lebanese on that border to be able to return safely to their homes president biden speaks to the general assembly tomorrow. >> when will be his last address to that body? what is the thrust of the message, ambassador through? >> three priorities that will be reflected in the president's speech. first and foremost, we want to work to find peace so we're putting all
6:46 am
of our efforts behind peace and security, not just in gaza and israel and lebanon, but we're also focusing on on sudan we're focusing on ukraine. and so all of these will be part of our agenda as well as conflicts elsewhere in the world secondly, the humanitarian system around the world. it's under tremendous stress. humanitarian workers are being attacked they do not have access, they don't have all the resources they need. the president will raise concerns about the humanitarian system and how we can give them more to be able to respond to the situations we're seeing on the ground. and finally, as you know, we have been talking over the past two years here's about un reform and how we can make the security council more inclusive, but also empower the security council and so we made
6:47 am
an announcement. i did a few weeks ago announcing our support for two additional permanent seats for africa rotating seat for small island developing states and to move toward text-based negotiations that will allow for us to actually he moved the needle on un security council reform. so that will be the broad parameters we're excited that we have over 100 heads it's a state. many foreign ministers, and there will be a series of bilateral meetings that the president will be engaged in, including what the secretary general the secretary of state, will also participate in bilateral meetings as well as myself. >> i know you have a busy week ahead of you think you so much for taking the time to speak with us this morning, ambassador linda thomas greenfield. thank you right. >> just moments ago after one hundred and 84 days in space, a
