tuesday, september the 24th, 9:00 a.m. here in london, 11:00 a.m. across the israeli lebanese border, where israel has begun another round of airstrikes according to lebanon's national news agency the lebanese health ministry says nearly 500 people including dozens of women and children, were killed in monday's wave of strikes. and israeli official says prime minister benjamin netanyahu told his security cabinet is aim is to cut hezbollah from the war with hamas the official also says the cabinet has agreed to raise the level of military operations each day. the israel defense forces says it hit 1,600 hezbollah targets on monday. and today, israel says it hit dozens more in southern lebanon after the iran backed militant group i fired multiple rocket barrages into northern israel overnight. and amid the violence civilians in southern lebanon are fleeing their homes and seeking safety
1:03 am
israel's prime minister says the lebanese people are not their target i have a message for the people of lebanon israel's war is not with you it's with hezbollah for too long hezbollah has been using you as human shields it placed rockets in your living rooms and missiles in your garage those rockets and missiles are aimed directly at our cities, directly at our citizens to defend our people against hezbollah strikes. we must take out those weapons soon paula hancocks joins me now with more. >> just bring us up to up-to-date. first, paula, on the latest barrages coming from both sides >> max, so we certainly have seen a lot happened in the early hours of tuesday as well. the israeli military saying dozens of rockets came from hezbollah into northern israel. they say there were no injuries as far as they can tell, but
1:04 am
they are putting out a number of fires where some of those missiles were not intercepted and did hit open ground. and we also know that they have said that they have been carrying out strikes on hezbollah targets in southern lebanon and also in bell back. now, we understand from the israeli military that they have been telling lebanese citizens to move away from any areas where they believed that hezbollah operatives are in the process of firing against israeli towns and air bases in northern israel. they also say that they are concerned that hezbollah is hiding ammunition, is hiding missiles inside civilian infrastructure, inside civilian homes. there was a briefing from the israeli military and they did show some photos this we also heard more details from the spokesperson let me be
1:05 am
clear. hezbollah is responsible for this situation. this is his balanced plan to turn south and lebanon into a battlefield for its attacks on israel we cannot accept terrorist groups storing weapons inside people's homes, using them to fire and other civilian communities military also saying that it is planning for the next phases. there will be more details on that shortly, according to the chief of staff. now, when it comes to the biden administration, they are very concerned with what is happening at this point. they have been working from months to try and ensure that the war in gaza was not going to expand, that there wouldn't be a widening conflict. we've heard from one us official telling cnn, quote, we are the closest, we've been to spiral into a regional war since october 7. and the u.s official also says that the biden
1:06 am
administration believes that hezbollah has been significantly weakened over the past week. of course, not just the strikes that are happening at the moment, but also the pagers and walkie-talkies. walkie-talkies belonging to hezbollah, exploding it last week across the country. and so what the u.s is doing at this point we understand is working feverishly behind the scenes to try and prevent this from expanding further, and trying to convince israel not to carry out a ground invasion at the moment, this is ariel bombardment that we are seeing in lebanon. and it is not just hezbollah operatives that have been killed. we understand from the ministry of health almost 500 have been killed, but dozens of those have been women and children. max paula. thank you iran has warned israel of dangerous consequences following monday's deadly airstrikes against hezbollah. in lebanon, former us defense secretary leon panetta, spoke
1:07 am
to cnn about the escalating conflict well, iran is always been at the heart of the problem because they have in fact again supplying these proxy forces that do their dirty work and they've been doing it for a long time and you're ron by has stated very clearly that they're going to continue to support hezbollah whether or not there's an opportunity with the new president and iran to try to see whether at least you can begin some kind of dialogue i don't know, but that's probably worth an effort, but i think right now to be truthful, we've crossed a threshold here a tween a war that tries to apply some restraint. >> and a wider war were clearly walking into a much wider war. and that makes it much more difficult for any of the parties to agree to any kind of solution. >> her world lead is kickoff

the 79th accession of the united nations general assembly. today, featuring what will likely be us president joe biden's final address to the group. it comes amid a request from france's foreign minister for an emergency meeting of the un security council to address the israeli strikes in lebanon the group already has one meeting on the books for today. amid the start of the un general assembly with ukraine's president for a featured speaker was seen as richard roth previews what else to expect over the coming days. >> once again, it's a general assembly high level meeting overshadowed by wars and crises around the globe. to gaza and southern lebanon, israel involved in both the israeli ambassador to the un, danny danon defended his country's attacks on hezbollah. >> we don't want to escalate the situation. we don't want a wall today all if we would not have other choice, we will push back his balah it will be painful for the lebanese people in southern lebanon, but we
1:09 am
don't see any other choice. >> jordan and egypt prev requested a security council meeting on the latest fighting. but little is expected. there have already been dozens of meetings since the war began october 7, prime minister netanyahu is scheduled to be giving a speech here at the general assembly friday morning. but his appearance keeps getting delayed and there's still a possibility he may not appear at all due to developments back home irans new president lashed out at israel asking for united nations helped to stop israel's aggression paul giannis scalia, the end of occupation, the substation of apartheid in palestine, and an immediate ceasefire in gaza are prerequisites for global development and peace. >> they islamic republic of iran is prepared to work with other countries to achieve common global goals. >> president zelenskyy of ukraine is one of the speakers this week, he will meet with president biden, vice president harris, and former president
1:10 am
trump, though not necessarily here in the building president zelenskyy addressed the un summit for the future, which was agreed upon on sunday. however, it's not enforceable for zelenskyy. he has what he's called a victory plan that he's going to show president biden in washington i in my tone, leaders nations to continue supporting our joint efforts for a just and peaceful future. >> it will be president biden's final general assembly appearance. he's likely to stress unity once again but the way these crises and sudan, gaza, ukraine are going a lot more will be needed to make any progress. richard roth, cnn, united nations so no clear overall leader in the race of the white house. >> however however, new polling for the new york times and sienna college show that donald trump is things slightly better than kamala harris in three key swing states in the so-called sunbelt. he's leading the us vice president by five points
1:11 am
in arizona and remains ahead. but within the margin of error in both georgia and north carolina when looking at the country's overall choice for president. soon as latest poll of polls shows the vice president ahead by three points, but it's the electoral college, not the popular vote that determines who becomes the president. cnn's john king breaks down the issues driving voters decisions in these three key battleground states let's look at the top issues in these three states. >> again, forgive me. i just want to stretch this out. the economy is the number one issue in all three states, not by huge margins, but 26%, 28%, 25%, arizona, georgia, north carolina, immigration second in arizona, abortion, third, immigration and abortion kind of trade almost in a tie for second and third when it comes to the other battleground states. so the issues economy and immigration, we know there are trumps issues and abortion is a harris issue. voters were asked in this poll who's kit, what candidate best represents you on your issue? so it could be the economy for many voters, it might be something else just
1:12 am
generically who the candidate you trust on your top issue and look at this again, i'm just going to stretch this out. on just the generic top issue question it's narrow, but trump leads in all three states, right? so people are saying, i'm with him, he's best for me on my take up issue. here's what's even more we know issue number one is the economy and just look at this and we've seen this again, this is only one poll. don't overinvest in any one poll, but we have seen this data in other polls. this is a constant problem for the vice president who's best on the economy. trump by 14 points leads in arizona, trump by 12 points leads in georgia, trump by 13 points leads in order carolina, it's the top issue and trump has a huge edge that's a problem for the vice president well, a source tells cnn that trump plans to return to butler, pennsylvania, the town where he was shot back in july in less than two weeks. >> trump also made several stops in pennsylvania on monday where polls show him neck and neck with harris during a rally in the town of indiana, trump claimed he's a protector of women and tried to downplay
1:13 am
abortion issue because i am your protector. >> i want to be your protectors president. i have to be your protector. i hope you don't make too much of it. the country is falling apart. we're going to end up in world war iii. and all they can talk about is abortion that's all they talk about and it really no longer pertains because we've done something on abortion that nobody thought was possible. >> well, trump also took swipes at harris over her handling of immigration, seen as danny freeman picks up that story president donald trump spoke for just over an hour and-a-half at a rally here in indiana, pennsylvania. >> this area, western pennsylvania, really crucial to the campaign in case he hopes to carry the great commonwealth once again, in 2024, he wanted this specific county about an hour east of pittsburgh, both in 20 16 and in 2020. so if he hopes to carry the state, he really needs to boost his numbers in these specific more rural areas of pennsylvania. now the rally was really well
1:14 am
simply normal trump campaign event. the former president stuck to the teleprompter a good amount in the beginning of his remarks, he focused on the economy, on the biden administration's withdrawal from afghanistan, hit on fracking. of course, an important issue here in pennsylvania, but he did drift off topic as well at one point, lamenting johnny carson, though logger being the host of the tonight show complaining about the moderators of the last debate and also criticizing vice president kamala harris for her interview with oprah recently. but this supportive crowd here and they really ate up a lot of what the former president was saying here, including when he spent time talking specifically about immigration, take a listen. >> she's been in office for 3.5 years. she's saying what she's going to do if she becomes president. but she's been there almost four years. he hasn't done anything except destroy our country with millions of people that shouldn't be here whether she was a border czar or just the person in charge of the border. it's been the worst thing
1:15 am
ever, maybe one of the worst things ever to happen to our country look at what's happening in springfield, ohio. >> now, earlier today, former president trump participated in a roundtable with pennsylvania farmers where he discussed the economy. he also made a rare off the record stop at a local grocery store meet and greet with some voters. and also note that on monday evening, we learned from cnn's alayna treene that former president trump intends to return to butler in early october. butler yeah, of course, the place where former president trump was shot at a campaign rally back in july danny freeman, cnn indiana, pennsylvania meanwhile, we're hearing harris and her campaign. >> they're considering a visit to the u.s.-mexico border later this week, whilst the vice president is in arizona, this could mark an opportunity he's just shore up her credentials on immigration and issue in which trump is leading cnn's priscilla alvarez explains harris campaign officials are weighing a potential visit by the vice president to the
1:16 am
u.s.-mexico border on friday when she is set to visit the battleground state of arizona. >> the reason sources telling me is that they are trying to narrow the gap in polling. of course, former president donald trump has held a lead in polls when it comes to the issue of immigration. but while some campaign officials remain concerned about that lead, they also see an opportunity to close the gap. now one source telling me that no final decision has been made, and of course, the vice president has visited the us-mexico border as vice president, as well as california senator and as attorney general in that state. but a visit to arizona would also come at a time where former president donald trump is leading in the polls and as border crossings remain low, the lowest they've been since 2020. but republicans have tried to cast the vice president falsely. so as the borders are only putting her responsible for border security, well, that hasn't been the case. instead, she has been focused on the root causes
1:17 am
of migration in central america border visit would offer the opportunity campaign official safe for her to deliver her message on this issue one, where she has been talking about her work as attorney general, tackling transnational gangs. but also saying that the former president is unserious about the border for tanking that bipartisan border bill all the same, the vice president is slated to visit arizona later this week. that will later be followed by nevada, too important states that she is trying to get a lead on. former president donald trump ahead of november priscilla alvarez, cnn, washington well, two storm system is developing this hour. >> first hurricane john may landfall earlier off the southern coast of mexico as a category three storm. the national hurricane center says life-threatening storm surge is expected to produce significant coastal flooding storm will also bring heavy rainfall, flash floods and mudslides to the region meanwhile, an area

doesn't he? and we're hoping to get some more detail on exactly what is in that plan. >> yeah, this seems to be the sort of central tenant of his visit. he's been to the last un security. you're in un general assembly last year was virtually at the previous ones or this is his third as a wartime president, but he really wants to differentiate this one. he said on the plane over here, this is, this fall will determine what comes next in the war. and he's bringing this peace plan, which he intends to present, not only to president biden, but we understand to both presidential candidates, vice president kamala harris and donald trump, though he he seemed to intimate in a meeting with congressional leaders on monday that there wasn't a date set for that as of yet as for what is in the plan, we don't know concretely yet the hints that he's dropping is that this will be about strengthening ukraine's, that it has a stronger hand in negotiations with specific weapons and we do believe that it will include a request for permission jin to use long-range missiles on russian soil. or with things like security guarantees and potentially a nod to a future nato membership, which is of course, a pretty big thing for
1:33 am
russia so that is what we think that he will present. but clearly, this is a moment for ukraine when they feel they're running out of time, not just because of the situation on the battlefield, but because of the upcoming mean us election. and i think it was very significant that just hours after we heard from residents, let's go monday, we had this from donald trump at a rally in pennsylvania >> now, i see used zelenskyy is here. i think zelenskyy is the greatest sales have been in history every time it comes into the country, he walks away with $60 billion billion >> it was $60 billion. he wants them to he wants them to win this election so badly. but i would do differently. i will work at peace before him, even before as president since elected, if i win this election the first again, i'm gonna do is call up zelenskyy and call up president putin. and i'm going to say you gotta make a deal. no. >> we didn't know what that deal looks like. president trump, former president trump
1:34 am
has not offered any details of that, but this comes, you know, barely a week since we heard his vice presidential candidate, j.d. vance talk about how he thinks the conflict could be ended by sort of freezing the line where the current front lines are and creating a demilitarized zone. he has opening opposed ukraine aid. so ukraine is clearly very concerned about at this point, and that's why i think this peace plan is so urgent. they want to try to put these systems in place to rally international support ahead of november. >> but he's got most of europe onside has need because they've been pressuring biden to allow at least the longer-range missiles to go into russia. so he's got quite a lobby over there in new york. >> yeah, i think that is true. certainly that seems to be more willingness on the side of europe. but when it comes to those permissions to use long-range missiles inside of russia. and there's really two countries that are supplying them. there's the franco-british scalp storm shadows, and then there's the us atacms. but i think certainly europe will be looking to the u.s. for
1:35 am
political cover. there is some suggestion certainly from experts that i've spoken to that with those missiles, there's some us involvement potentially in the gps targeting that involves there may be technical reasons why they need the u.s. onside here. so it's it's a critical moment for this war. i think this is not hyperbole that we're hearing because he really needs this week to go his way and certainly i think russia certainly from the media coverage that we see there is watching extremely closely. >> thank you. messaging platform telegram has updated its terms of service and privacy policy after founder and ceo pavel durov arrest durov posted monday that telegram will now disclose to authorities with valid legal requests the ip addresses and phone numbers of users who violate its rules it's also removed problematic content from its public search feature. the move is meant to reduce criminal activity on the platform. durov was arrested in france last month and interviewed about suspected criminal activity on telegram

the man suspected of trying to assassinate donald trump early this month has written a letter war rather had written a letter declaring his intentions and laying out his plans. that's according to a new filing by federal prosecutors who say they will now charge ryan roof with attempting to assassinate the former us president's cnn's randi kaye has details from monday's hearing in court, we learned more about a letter that was provided from a witness who said ryan ruth dropped a box at his home a while ago and i box was passed on to federal investigators in it was a handwritten letter according to investigators that they believe ryan ruth wrote. >> that letter says in part, this was an assassination attempt on donald trump, but i failed you. i tried my best and gave it all the gumption i could muster. it is up to you now to finish the job and then he went on to offer $150,000 to whomever for could complete the job. we also learned from from the agents in court that the

targets in southern lebanon on monday the onslaught is prompting thousands of people to flee their homes in southern lebanon as israel says, it will continue to escalate its attacks let me shut down law in vain. >> today's he didn't understand. i would like to clarify israel's policy accumulo we are not waiting for direction. we are ahead of it everywhere in every arena anytime we've eliminating seniors eliminating commanders, eliminating rockets, i'm counting those who tried to hurt us. we will hurt them gravely certainly, i promise to change the security balance, the balance of power in the north this is exactly what we're doing shocking video from lebanon. where an israeli airstrike reportedly smashed the window of a lebanese journalist as he was getting ready to do a live television interview

that. >> i mean, really hard to watch isn't it? and then that is away from all of the imagery that we haven't got at some of these attacks how would you sum up where we are in this conflict? >> well, the israeli government announced last week that it was entering a new phase, a new era in what has been a year of a border war effectively with hezbollah. and you heard from the israeli prime minister, he says that his goal is to i try to get hezbollah to back down to stop with its cross-border rocket attacks that are supporting hamas militants in gaza, also bearing the brunt of a year-long conflict since october 7 on monday, what we saw was a ferocious aerial bombardment carried out by israeli warplanes as israel has pointed out, at least 1,600 targets that it hit it is a

dramatic escalation going even further than the explosion of the hezbollah pagers and hezbollah walkie-talkies that wounded and killed hundreds of people last week in the course of this there is a massive death toll, max, we're talking about close to 500 people according to lebanon's ministry of health, at least 492 people killed in a single day in lebanon on monday by the israeli aerial bombardment. >> and among those killed or 35 children and 58 women. so nearly 100 women and children killed in a single day and an absolute exodus of humanity, of people fleeing from the targeted areas in the south and the east of lebanon. take a listen to what one of those women fleeing had to say struck right next to our house
