america power solely for their own ego be clear, what's in the 82 will portray for themselves, a page tome is not really that strong men who are above the law, who will bring order and different from what the campaign has put out in the will be seized. they actually past few weeks. it has more bring this border because they're more interested in charts and footnotes and things serving their own ego and like that, but there isn't a clinging onto our and we saw lot that's new in there. i how the republicans undermined will say yes i would love to our democracy because they hear her put out more details, refuse to stand up to trump in more meat on the bone of a lot the midst of all this. and in of these policy proposals. but new york city we have, an we also shouldn't have crazy opportunity to stand up. as you mentioned, an issue like this, double standard where act like well, he of course believes she has to have all of the that what he was standing up for in part was to put party or footnotes and economic aggressions and trump can just policy over party. out whatever about tax. >> he was suggesting and talking about an influx of >> the question is about the american people actually migrants into the city as what he was defending the people of hearing what the plan is. i mean, we're, we're we're new york about. do you buy that basically out of time but that statement that that was the those are different crime he's reason that he is targeted? if got 40 days to go. you need to not for what other reasons the talk in broad strokes. they feds might actually have on him understand the contrast and that's what she's doing and what they're not understanding no, i don't buy that at all. i actually worked at go we'll see exactly what the mcdonald's we did find that charges are tomorrow morning out in the interview and i was and we'll let the courts play very pleased sleep station of it out. but what remains true right now is that he cannot the former president's, i function as the mirror the city guess that's been solved now, with so many people departing everyone. thank you very much from his, his administration so for watching and thank you.

8:05 pm
and then give a sense back about why the case shouldn't be brought. these conversations are between people like brendan maguire, and void johnson, the two criminal lawyers who have been defending ending the mare in this matter, and they would talk to their former colleagues. they're both former assistant us attorneys from the southern district to say, here's what you don't for the bats of peril in the know. these are the things you might not have considered. game a cnn special event, the here's our argument against these charges and that is a vice presidential debate, tuesday at nine conversation they have is kind of a last-ditch effort to stave off charges are by time in this know that case, we are told that those investigated for corruption conversations happened in everywhere. you've gone city-state, even brock obama is recent days and as we see today department of justice, investigated you. you've if this indictment was handed achieved a rare trifecta of up in his announced tomorrow corruption investigation patients is that really what we there in treaties failed i want in the next mayor that you think you're going to enter, mean, look, gloria, i have been enter or city hall. it's going in the rooms when i have to be different we all know what's going to be exactly the granted an audience to defense same. that's why so many people counsel it's all and i had to tell people once that audience on the stage don't want you to be mayor? is granted and you've got the >> that. was 2021 in a bold

grand jury and all the things that are happening. prediction from andrew yang >> the government by design has back then, looking what frankly the upper hand. it also has the quite prescient tonight isn't burden of proof right now, we're seeing right now on our it? now he ran against eric adams new york city mayor back screen images of gracie mansion. we heard just moments then, but dropped out in the democratic primary. andrew yang ago from the mayor who is joins me now. andrew, i don't adamant in his dinner nile of anything. and talking about the know what kind of crystal ball maybe you may have had. are attempt to undermine his you? we're intimating, but this is amping. it's pretty credibility actually said for months, leaks and rumors have oppression tonight to hear what been aimed at me in an attempt to undermine my credibility and has happened through an indictment. what's your reaction paint me as guilty gloria, as we said, the walls have been to be proven right. closing in on him for nearly a >> but the truth is, if you year, but tell me what's have someone who's on unprincipled and doesn't transpired since his phone was seized? by the federal follow the rules of the road investigators on the streets of and you put them in a position of vast freedom power. it's new york. >> the video is remarkable and you can see that it was entirely predictable that recorded from inside gracie you're going to see a series mansion where the mayor has of corruption investigations been huddling for the past several hours as news of this and an unraveling. and i wish that wasn't happening because indictment broke, one thing that we can also report tonight new yorkers deserve better leadership. but here we are is that the mayor himself was should mayor adams step down we not told hold was not given any advance notice that this was have to think about what's best going to come out into the open for the people of new york as you just reported, he had city. >> and you have so many people
8:07 pm
had that meeting. his lawyers leaving this administration, it had had that meeting, but he did not know that this was is going to be very, very hard to recruit. i talked to someone coming tonight in the video, as who works in city hall tonight you said at the beginning and she said she's updating defiant, he is clearly saying her resume so in this context i that he has every intention to think eric adams should resign fight this fight i did hard. he in order to give a new leader a said, i'm going to call for a chance to right the ship and trial so that new yorkers can get the city back to a place find out the truth. now, where it can hire and retain what's transpired since all of this started, perhaps the most high-quality leaders to try and move the city forward. remarkable moment, the most telling moment was that moment >> i mean, the legal troubles that he experiences extending in time when atoms was stopped to his inner circle at city hall, as you mentioned, you got to death i think the mayor's a by federal investigators and senior adviser, the school asked to turn over his chancellor. they've all electronic devices. this was a received search warrants. it's remarkable escalation by federal prosecutors, stepping apparently so how does the city move forward from here, even if he were to step down given the into his vehicle, asking him to breadth of this investigation turn this over in the middle of it's going to take a different a new york city street. wow he was with his police detail type of leader laura, but, you since then. we've seen a know, there are a lot of people who loved this city, a lot of steady stream of revelations of people who'd be happy to step what the mayor allegedly was up and serve, but they're not going to serve this mayor knows doing, of what people in his orbit we're doing high ranking
8:08 pm
i know what is going to say. >> hey, you know what this guy members of his administration is under the cloud of an indictment? you don't know how involved in numerous scandals. long he's going to be there. and we have to remember laura, it's very, very unlikely he there are full more separate ends up winning reelection so federal investigations that are why would someone want to enter a very difficult job, not currently looking at different parts of city hall. the knowing who's going to be in the top spot for any length of indictment tomorrow in this indictment that remains sealed time that's not how you get the best people into very as of tonight might be related difficult role and of course, to something just a mayor is as you mentioned, you know, elections, season very much being accused of but other than upon us who would step up to that, there are three other the plate. what would be the potentially investigations actual transition? a lot of unanswered questions and new involving high ranking members yorkers, i'm sure want one of his administration, as well question answered. what's in as the nypd for months. now, the indictment? andrew yang. thank you so much. there has been a steady drumbeat of frankly chaos >> thanks, laura. i want to coming out at city hall out of bring in national political city hall. and the mayor and an reporter for axios, alex thompson, cnn political administration that's been commentator and democratic fighting to portray com i'm strategist maria cardona, and republican strategist liam portrayed control and say that donovan is also here with us tonight. >> i mean, rather than begin they are not going to be with, you mayor adams a very distracted, that they're getting to work every single day doing the job that new prominent democrat, although he yorkers elected him to do. but has oftentimes buck the system every day it became harder and and been very critical of
8:09 pm
harder. in the last two weeks, democratic policies that he believes are undermining his ability to manage the influx of we've seen that departure of migrants to the community but several top members of key agencies here in the city will there be a lot of pressure including the nypd, the for him to step down at this particular state. school's chancellor, and the >> i think they're already is i think you're already seeing department of health. across the spectrum of >> it's unbelievable to look at this resignations, number democrats that saying that he one, and also that yearbook should resign, that i agree. i photo that you showed of all the pepeople who are involved i do think he should step down. some sort of orbit. and you're i'm not saying he's guilty. right to the point he talked obviously, we live in a society about that there were some if where in a justice system where there's any expectation that he is innocent until proven he should resign because he couldn't manage what's going guilty. on. he says, look he has been >> but if he if it's true that he says he is innocent, then go managing and facing these lives for months and essentially fight this tooth and nail intimating that he can still deal and do the job. but without any distractions. >> and the same with the role jeremy, let me bring you in here because we're seeing of the new york city mayor, new york city is too important. a smoke, right money. he would city in this country in the say where there's smoke, there's fire, but prosecutors world to have this kind of can't rely on that particular distraction. and it goes statement. you have to build to against everything that he prove a case they have to have himself ran for as somebody the evidence to support it. tell me who would represent an what kind of evidence would the southern district of new york have to have not just to administration that was going convict, but even to indict to not be distracted, that was going to focus on the issues that probable cause standard in that new yorkers care about. front of a grand jury, what the most. this is not what they
8:10 pm
deserve, right now, he talked would they need to have to about rating and crime. i was indict the mayor of what the biggest city in this entire he's also placed officer, country. how would the case be we're hearing from sources built? tonight as well, that governor kathy hochul is not having any >> yeah, you need more than plan to try to replace him at that. smoke me that kindling in this juncture, but we do know the flame itself. and that's that it's an election year. we going to come by stweart know that vice president kamala different means it could come from testimony of first-hand harris, who has positioned witnesses. it could be people herself quite literally as the who are cooperating, people who have been had their property prosecutor versus the felon when it comes to trump in her, seized by a search warrant for she'll be asked about this as example, that are not charged well, and i'm wondering from you alex what do you think she the crime we discussed the beginning of it about the campaign finance issue that might say i think she probably originally we heard about good i mean, i'm not quite sure, year ago. we know that the but i think she's probably mayor's own devices and other going to try to stay out of this. devices received so there could >> i don't think she wants i be wires to meaning that don't i don't i think that is sort of she's a cautious they're on phone calls, politician. she is shown to not listening to conversations, all try to get involved in the of these things could add up to thing is, this was already what pointing to the mayor. and going to be a contentious that's what we need reasonable primary. he already had a few primary challengers. he's cause to believe in that foundation that a felony was getting i have significantly more now, you could see ngo committed. is that some honest cuomo get in the race. you could see the former governor services fraud that could be of new york. you can see many, alleged? is it a bribery? there many others is going to be a could be alleged campaign bloodbath next year if eric finance crime that could be adams does not get out in this alleged, but that's going to come in different ways and democratic primary. and the thing is about eric adams is a remind people to whom don't know in a federal grand jury, lot of people calling for him
8:11 pm
to resign tonight. they are the you can allow hearsay, you same people that were opposed to him in the primary four don't need all those witnesses actually have to come in. you years ago. so he's not paying attention to that the idea of can hear from an agent if for former governor andrew cuomo example, who can share what he said began would be very or she learned and discovered interesting on this point as well. during their investigation. so >> let me ask him, are you i mean, the doj has now convicted it's very easy as we know, that ham sandwich analogy. a democratic senator, bob it's very easy to get that menendez. obviously, if jersey indictment, but then that proof they've indicted a democratic beyond a reasonable doubt is mayor. now as well. and of would be much more difficult course there is a claim from once the case goes before judge trump, but this is a two tier a really good point. >> and of course would also justice system where only mean that adams as a potential republicans are ever targeted, defendant and target it would are attacked. we literally see not have been able to go before the grand jury couldn't have pleaded his particular case, legally this is not the case, does this undermine especially wouldn't have had an attorney present. all those rules do not in a place like new york, where trump has said, new york is apply in the grand jury citing so we'll see what kind of against me. they're against probable cause they had to lead republicans, et cetera. does this undermine his claims this to an indictment this is really is just the deep state trying significant tonight. thank you to throw everything off but i so much, everyone. think, you know, look, talk is cheap mechanism for removal if >> a handful of politicians there's a lesson of the last expectedly are calling for decade in politics is if you adams to resign, and that includes new york democratic are shameless enough, you can withstand everything. congresswoman alexandria >> and eric adams might be answering his own phones by ocasio-cortez, who posted phone by the end, but there's today, quote, the flood of no reason to leave unless resignations and vacancies are they're pushing out. >> well, you know, maria, as we threatening government function talk about this the

nonstop, investing we'll make weaponization of what's going on. eric adams today, it impossible to recruit and maryann's what he was talking he spoke about this as being a retain a qualified target that he knew that essentially if he stood his administration my next guest ground, that he would be a believes he should also resign target and target, he has become and he even spoke about new york state democratic how you know, this is despite senator jabbari bridgeport joins me now. are pleased. he says, when the >> senator, thank you so much federal government did nothing for joining. frankly, you as it's broken, immigration policies overloaded our shelter actually call for atoms to resign, not just tonight, but i think a week ago. now he's system with no relief. i put them the people of new york been indicted. we're learning before party and politics. this it's still under seal. we don't know the actual charges is referenced in the middle of yet but we know that he's been his statement about why he believes this is a hit job. indicted. what is your reaction essentially politically biden tonight? and him have not been the best >> i, think that i'm frankly of friends as of late because surprised that this has dragged of what's going on. i do out for so long and that he has wonder from your perspective not resigned already that has rule this gain traction, having been evident for a while now that he is completely unfit to this mayor make these claims run this city and with the traction, in what way? traction to suggest that it is his continuous resignations from his administration, it's aversion to the immigration throwing the city into policies that makes him the disarray. and i also just just target and that it's the doj of want to say as a former public the biden doj that is doing school teacher, just hearing that the school chancellor is this. conspiracy theorists will now departing in the middle of the school year is just so love that and we know that
8:13 pm
disheartening for hundreds of politics, especially today, is full of those kinds of conspiracy theorists. thousands of students and families across new york city i >> but no, i don't think so even the middle of this school year, i mean, this is really and it's because of what you the beginning of it. said, right menendez was >> and so whatever plans they have been laid that just but indicted and menendez was very one aspect of it, and i should mention that he does remain close. defiant. i mean, even tonight, >> very good friend of the administration on so many he said that he knew that if he issues. but this goes to and stood his ground for new york liam, i understand what you because that he be a target and said, but it's a very cynical he said that this was not be way to look at politics, which is what she smiles and nods. it surprising. i always knew that if i stood my ground, all of goes you for all of you, that i would be a target and a target. people. i became what do you make of >> but that's exactly what people are sick of absolute his understanding or belief as sick of the words that mayor to why he has been targeted in adams used in terms of oh, i'm this way we've heard this going to stand up here and fight for you and i'm going to story before. become a target that's very >> donald trump behaves the trumpian very trumpian. same exact way, and we've seen >> what he said there they're going to come after me because this time and time and again in they're really coming after you and i'm i'm the one that's standing in the way. >> know. there are things called laws. there are things called anti-corruption laws. and when you break those, then you get in trouble. and if you are a public servant, you and may this is me being very
8:14 pm
naive. but public service people who are elected, people who are, who are given the public trust should put the people that elected them before their own ambition. and there are some people who do that. joe biden will that narrative you say won't get any pickup, new york post murdoch tapped i i've lloyd, it's been picking up on that narrative and it was a big supporter of eric adams, that primary four years ago. and now here we are. we have so much more to unpack and this, this is extraordinary news this morning, this evening, excuse me. standby, everyone. right now, the national hurricane center has just issued its 11:00 p.m. advisory on hurricane helene, a monster storm currently barreling towards florida's west coast where it's expected to hit as a category four storm tomorrow night, cnn meteorologist chad myers is at the weather center. chad, what's the update the update is it is still an 85
8:15 pm
mile per hour storm the storm did not intensify after about the noon hour, and that's great news because it's still in very warm water. >> it had a rough afternoon with a little bit of dry air inside and so it didn't intensify it's going to have enough times. there's still do that. all the rain that we saw across parts of the southeast, not even part of the hurricane, but now the ground is very wet, even atlanta picked up three inches of rain, part of a cold front, not part of the hurricane, but the middle 80s for temperatures is going to allow this thing to intensify and still get to that category for level of 130 miles per hour south of tallahassee along that big bend area that we see. but because it is going to be moving so quickly, there's going to be hurricane conditions all the way into georgia, tropical storm conditions, certainly through atlanta with gusts there, 65 miles per hour. that's going to bring down trees it's in power lines. look at the areas here that's going to pick up so much water too. this is the salt flood, the surge that's
8:16 pm
going to get pushed up into these estuaries, at least here, there aren't that many cities in the way here, but certainly the biggest city that's going to be in the way of this wind will be tallahassee cedar city, all the way even toward lake city, these are the areas that are going to pick up significant wind damage, power lines down trees down. now we move it up into the carolinas. what's going to happen there? well, it's going to be windy, but it's going to rain. it's going to rain in nearly a foot of rain in places. and then for tomorrow, the potential, even for a few small tornado because that's what happens with hurricanes. they can produce these brief but still dangerous tornadoes. laura oh my goodness, chad, i hear tallahassee. >> i hear college campuses, i hear students who are back in session as well. what will they do? please stay safe out there. thank you, chad. >> look, republicans, they can't stop talking about eating pets will bring you a new disturbing saban from the sitting congressman. >> yes, a sitting congressman? and we'll speak with the group looking to bring criminal charges. donald trump and j.d.

exactly you hear the most here of what we look the same thursday night football on prime it's thursday night football street thursday night football, all prawn your house solomon in new york and this is cnn kamala harris giving her first one-on-one sit down with a major networks since becoming the democratic nominee, she spent going after trump and one of her biggest weaknesses according to polling, the economy donald trump has a history of taking care of very rich people and i'm not mad at anybody for being rich, but they share it makes sense. >> she's using her first solo network interview to hammer trump on the economy because on that issue, she's got work to do. this is the number she
8:36 pm
wants to change trump is polling well ahead of her on the economy, 50 to 39. harris is trying to tilt in her favor by touting what she calls her opportunity economy, saying that it will help the middle class by making things like housing and groceries and raising a child more affordable. and she's taking her message on the road like she didn't battleground pennsylvania just today. and while there, she pushed back on trump's claims that she's far left on the economy by declaring she's a capitalist. well back with me is now the panel out to me begin with you here, because i wonder when you heard the interview, did she fill in any of the gaps on the issue of equity? no policy know. >> and that's a deliberate strategy on on the harris campaign the thing is, this is she doesn't want to answer tough questions. she is not want to lay out a lot of policy and that's because she wants this race to be about donald trump. she wants this race to be a referendum on donald trump, and that's why you've seen her or her campaign sort of anonymously walk back many

of these decisions banning fracking medicare for all, et cetera, et cetera. also, there are all these old positions that she took that over the last two weeks. i've been asking, hey, that she's still support them. and instead of saying yes or no, they're just not commenting. and this includes an electric vehicle mandates. so all automakers have to make electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles by 2035 reparations for slavery, ending the death penalty, which something that she was opposed to for two decades decriminalizing prostitution and providing through executive action and path waves is citizenship to dreamers. she is not answering any of those questions and that's it is a deliberate strategy. >> what do you say about that? >> i am completely disagree. there is a whole list a very specific policies that she laid out today and she has been laying out for the past month and a half you know, when you talk about the childcare issue, when you talk about the opportunity economy and what working class families, middle class families are going through the $6,000 tax credit for couples who have children, the 20 $5,000 that she wants to
8:38 pm
give the $50,000 she wants to give people who want to start a new business the tax credit, the tax cut she's going to give more than 100 million middle-class workers that's pretty detailed. and i think what she's going to continue to do is talk about that and she'll probably continue to put more meat on those bones. the talked about what she didn't talk about it, but they put out an 82 page very detailed policy agenda but part of it is that she's going to make the contrast with donald trump in terms of here, she is giving all of these details and no one is talking about how donald trump he gives no detail, but he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about on the economy. there's just concepts of plans. and so the contrast is, here's somebody who's going to wake up every day to talk about how to give you more opportunity, had to give working middle-class people more opportunity versus donald trump, who only wakes up every day thinking about how to help himself and his rich

friends while you know just want to, i agree that xi has put out some stuff. i do think a lot of it is the bare minimum and a lot of it really was copy and pasted from the build back better plans, the biden ministration proposed in that first year that haven't yet passed those are details. >> i think that the people who are looking for someone to help them with the issues that they need help with that's what they're going to look for. >> and i think that really does fill in the blanks. >> but to maria's point, i think it's a question of what voters are looking for at this point. if you're undecided, then you're either looking to get to yes. and we're looking for little more reassurance or you're looking to get to know, you're not so sure about her. she's not answering the tough questions. i think it's a rorschach test and if you haven't perspective on kamala harris, if you like her, she did pretty well right there, did very well. if you're skeptical, if you don't think she has what it takes, then i don't know if she didn't do enough. and so i think that's what they're navigating right now, is the need as you mentioned, laura two, they recognized as they need to do more, they need to show a little bit more. but to alex's point, they realized there's risks of this. they're kind
8:40 pm
doing this picture sports metaphor, prevent defense, or of four corners offense. and they realized that they need to do a little bit more, but they want to do anything that puts her at risk. she needs to be comfortable and confident and they're putting her in settings where she can be that. but on on the economy, it's just not quite there but you know what it's working because if you look at the polls, she is closing the gap on the economy. it was a lot larger now and if you look at some other polls, it is closing in single digits. and so she has going the absolute right direction this strategy could very well work, but i thing is, i think it's worth acknowledging that isn't strategy that does. >> this was her first solo hello network interview, but it was with somebody who literally went on tv last friday and said, i'm probably i'm basically voting for kamala kamalaharris. >> well, let me ask you about it. >> that's fine though it something that everyone is clamoring. >> she needs to do more up. she's going to do more of that. she's doing a town hall next week with one of his young, she's going to continue to do do these things, but her whole priority is to talk to voters about exactly what she wants to do for them versus
8:41 pm
donald trump, who is only in it for himself. >> let me ask you, keep talking about this being a strategy of not answering. are you saying that just as a politician, you have the ability to speak? he can greater platitudes four days away from the election as opposed to the granular detail, is that the strategy? >> yeah. well, i mean, some of this also is a strategy born of circumstance, right? in the fact that she sent this ticket and really unprecedented ways and the thing is that she may not have to do a such a long policy rollout if she had gone in this race a year ago so some of it is a strategy from certain, we have. >> how do you see that? >> i think everybody knows what they think of donald trump this is really hinging on that threshold question of, okay, i know him. i either like him or i really don't like him. but does she give me enough of what i need to get to get to over the hump. and so to alex's point, she is not built out a long campaign that has shown who she is and how she got there. and so that they're trying to do is fill in the blanks in the least risky way and the vision part, which i think is really important
8:42 pm
because let's remember, voters don't go into a polling booth saying, okay, let me check all of these policy positions that this candidate is going to do for me they go with your a gut. would they go with emotion where everyone talked about how george w bush, right? one, because people wanted to go have a beer with him. al gore put out the 12 point plan. this is something that i think is working for her well we'll see how many of you want to read at pages thanks, everyone. and thank you all for watching anderson cooper 360 is next wait is over. tim walz and j.d. vance in their first and only face-to-face to bait and cnn has covered with that's political team in the business. a cnn special event, that vice presidential debate tuesday at nine on
