had, never been on a habitat project they we didn't get more out of it. then we put into it but when asked what he considered his biggest accomplishment, he said this well, the best thing i ever was marrying roselyne that does a feather color of my life so happy. 100th birthday. mr. president. senator jones, 100 years. i mean, what a legacy he has. he's been in hospice for a year yeah. >> no, it's it's really remarkable and i think, you know, people today forget a lot about jimmy carter from the 1960s and the 1970s when he really was one of the first southern governors to really talk about racial relations and ending discrimination people forget about his views on the environment and climate fema right now, we're seeing what happened fema was, was started because jimmy carter saw what the federal government could do to help people. and he was
4:01 am
remarkable individual, remarkable. >> he still is remarkable indictment, happy birthday, mr. president. >> thanks to our panel. thanks guys for joining us as well. i'm kasie hunt. don't go anywhere. cnn new central starts right now overnight. >> israel launches a ground incursion into lebanon this morning. new reports on how far they will go in the white house response. >> also breaking tonight tens of thousands of workers at ports across the country have walked off the job, stopping the flow of countless good that igniting fears. this could set back the economy let me and potentially spike inflation and say it with me, friends. it's debate day in america. once again, the first and only vice presidential debate. this it's election season is tonight and possibly the final debate of the entire presidential campaign. i'm kim kate bolduan with john berman and sara
4:02 am
sidner. this is cnn news central dangerous new phase in israel's war against hezbollah overnight is israeli forces cross the border into southern lebanon. >> they are calling it a limited good ground operation and israel insists there will be no long-term occupation, but it has not provided a timeline for its offensive. the last time israel forces entered lebanon was back in 2006 am 1,100 people died in that 34 day war. israel's ground offensive defies pressure from the u.s. to reach a ceasefire. just yesterday, defense secretary lloyd austin spoke with his israeli counterpart hours earlier, president biden told reporters, we should have a ceasefire now, the white house is reaffirming israel's right to defend itself, but it's warm morning of the real risk of mission creep. this is
4:03 am
all playing out of horses. israeli forces also targeted syria's capital with drones and planes diplomatic editor, nic robertson is in northern israel for us this morning. what have you been seeing and what else are you learning now that israel has also struck syria along with lebanon. and of course the war in gaza still oh ongoing targeted. >> that's how the idf is characterizing these raids as they put them across the border there saying that troops may be going across tens of meters to houses, maybe 100 meters maybe a few hundred meters. they are not saying if tanks are crossing the border, the description that was given to us was that the troops were sort of walking distance across the border. we know that tanks
4:04 am
have been at the border. we know that armored personnel carriers have been at the border. we understand that the letter the bunnies army at border post has pulled back from those border post. the idf has it through their arabic language spokesman reached out a message to the people living in villages in the south of lebanon. dozens of villages they're telling them to move many miles further north, 30 miles further north from where they are. in fact, the message is more wide ranging than that. it is saying that hezbollah is using your homes as protection to hide behind you, move northwards any vehicle moving south in this more than 30 mile zone, just over the border inside lebanon, any vehicle moving south, the idf says could be considered hostile and therefore, it would be dangerous so although the idf is creating sort of trying to create this wide codon to prevent hezbollah reinforcing
4:05 am
at the border at the moment they won't say if the troops over the border will stay over there tonight, will they come back? will they be reinforced by more the impression that the idf is creating is that this only has a relatively small focus and that focus it's to stop hezbollah having basis literally 100 meters or so from the border, from which they can fire missiles into israel. and when we say basis, we mean civilian houses, small military compounds that sort of thing in israel today, two people were injured by missiles fired by hezbollah. very close to tel aviv, just north of tel aviv. one of them, a bus driver taken to intensive care in a nearby hospital alright. >> nic robertson, there's so much going on in that region. thank you so much for being there to you and your team also breaking overnight, nearly 50,000 port workers are on strike as of this morning.
4:06 am
>> and what could become the most disruptive work stoppage in decades? members of the longshoreman's union are walking picket lines now to demand higher wages, the strike is taking place at 14 different different ports, major ports all along the east coast and through the gulf coast. >> why this could have such a big impact is there's really no practical or two alternative to the east and gulf coast ports for moving goods out of these ports to like basically the eastern half of the country. >> cnn's vanessa yurkevich is in new jersey. she's got much more on this. what what's happening behind you and where do things stand with this strike and talks clock ran out last night at midnight and now you have tens of thousands of dock workers on strike this morning, just here alone to the port authority of new york and new jersey. >> they employ over 4,000 union members and many of them on strike thank here this morning for the first time in 47 years
4:07 am
after the union and the u.s. maritime alliance could not come up with a deal before midnight just to show you some of what's going on around me over here, over my right-hand shoulder. you have contained painters that are piled up. these are empty no one though, is going to be picking them up and loading them because of the members on strike behind me right here. you have a couple of hundred of them out here since early this morning than if you take a look over my left-hand shoulder those are the ports. those are the docks. they are essentially closed nothing going in, nothing going out. now, kate, this all comes down to money, wages, and job security. many of the members behind me are holding signs saying just that they want to make sure that they're getting paid appropriately and they want to make sure their job obs are secure. listen to the president of the ila union just last month talking about what they're fighting for draw the line. these companies that work maritime business
4:08 am
come from overseas. now, water belongs to america they want to come in to america and build fully automated arose and get rid of american jobs good paying jobs that support families would medical pensions, annuities, and pay taxes. >> they want to get rid of them and usmx says that they've made an offer of up to 50% in wage increases over six years, as well as keeping language in the current contract that would help stop automation of jobs but the union saying that is not enough. now, in terms of this port, a lot of fruit and vegetables come into this court. you're talking about cherries, fresh fruit, charles auckland alcohol, also going out. you have auto parts that are being shipped across seas. none of that happening right now. as for the biden administration, they are monitoring this it's very, very closely. they say are they
4:09 am
are, they are in touch with both sides. one thing that business leaders around the country and the u.s. chamber of commerce is calling for, is for president biden to invoke the taft-hartley act. that is a way that he could protect that the president could potentially stop this strike. however, president biden says, he is not looking to do that right now. >> kate. >> alright, let's see what happens today. thank you so much, vanessa jump all right. >> new reporting and how the vice presidential candidates are spending their final hours before what could be the last debate for anyone before the presidential election? >> and president biden expected to visit north carolina tomorrow as the death toll from hurricane helene rises, again overnight. and today, one southern state will become the first in the nation to classify the fbi abortion pills as quote, controlled dangerous substances. just having them without a prescription could land women in prison for up to five years.

4:15 am
learn something about them. cnn's priscilla alvarez, just up this drink at the debate site here in new york. what can we expect priscilla this is going to be high stakes and uncharacteristically because it is likely the last debate of this election cycle. >> and because the race is still so close so governor tim walz, he's been in a debate camp in michigan that's where he's been going over videos of jd vance's previous debates and also doing mock sessions with stand-ins, transportation secretary, pete buttigieg. now, as you mentioned, there this is an opportunity for voters to get to know these campaigns better. and one of his tasks will also be to convince voters of vice president kamala harris, particularly those voters still say in polls that they don't know enough about her. now, j.d. vance, he is more experienced a width debates. in fact, it was his debate performance during a republican primary for a us senate seat that impressed former president donald trump. and he too has been doing
4:16 am
debate prep and house majority whip, tom emmer has been the standard for tim walz. now, what's this going to look like? some debate rolls to go through here. no live audience. they'll both be standing behind podiums and they'll have those two minutes. closing arguments. of course you can imagine the issues are going to range the gamut you're the economy, israel immigration immigration and health care. but in many ways, john, this there's also a reminder of how much this presidential election has changed. it was only over three months ago that this debate was being eyed by vice president kamala harris because she was the one that was preparing they go up against j.d vance. so this campaign had been preparing for this bowman and all parties know how stakes it's going to be just so close to election day. john how is the harris campaign viewing this moment? priscilla been talking to harris aides who say what they want from tim walz is for him too. >> come across as the every man for him to lean into his likability and all them tell me, guess he doesn't have the
4:17 am
same debate performance as j.d. vance but they're hoping that that part of that personality of tim walz can show the stark contrast with j.d. vance and then ultimately it's about tying vance to for president donald trump and casting and as just as much of a risk, now, the vice president, she was in las vegas on sunday where she said that she'd be cheering on governor walz. she's going to be behind closed doors today. they and she will be watching from her residence. john. >> all right. priscilla alvarez, you're about 20 blocks away. come say hi. when you're done there. thank you very much for your coverage. and of course, you can watch the simulcasted the cbs news debate right here on cnn, cnn special coverage of the vice presidential debate starts at 9:00 p.m. eastern time sara. >> all right. the devastation from hurricane helene is still unfolding. more families learning they have lost loved ones this morning rescues are still happening a full four-day after the storm and a sudden stop the six-week abortion ban in georgia. why a judge struck it down and what happens next?

challenge is right under your nose is not >> you call this morning, the number of people killed by hurricane helene has risen to at least 130 with hundreds more still missing and unaccounted for. crews are struggling to reach devastated areas because hundreds of roads remain blocked or damaged and cell service spotty at best tomorrow, president biden will tour the damage in the hard-hit western part of northern carolina, north carolina. cnn's isabel rosales is joining us now from asheville. we are hearing from other officials who are saying this isn't just a matter of days or weeks. this could be a matter of years to try to deal with all this damage. what are you
4:23 am
hearing about the roads which are significantly devastated and truly they can't get anything in without having some of the roads fixed it's a serious problem when people are stuck, they need access to these roads to get out, to reach loved ones. >> but instead they're finding crumbled, washed-out roads, trees, power lines all over the place. people have had to hike 11 plus miles to get out of areas that they've i've been trapped at. so here's a good bit of news we have found out from buncombe county that i 40 east leading out of the county. this is the asheville area. that portion of i40 to ease has reopened. so that is great news. but sara, there are still hundreds of roads throughout north carolina, throughout this western area of the state that are still close. so getting around and about is extremely challenging before i get into the other challenges, let me also give you this bit of good news from fema. they have
4:24 am
delivered 1 million liters of water and 600,000 meals in north carolina. this is pressing there's so much need in the community for basic, basic everyday supplies that you need to just keep going. and for these residents to take it day by day. alright. let's talk about the challenges now. let me show you what folks are dealing with an asheville debris all over the place. i'm talking like propane tanks, fuel tanks nails sticking out, and then things like this. this looks to be like a storage canister like huge, right? that the floodwaters of the swannanoa river showing you the power of it managed to just bring about right here of a long john silver, so challenges like that challenges to limit its cell service. this has been one of the biggest problems. a lack of communication people unable to reach him 911, unable to reach loved ones to let them know that they're okay slowly that cell service is restoring, but it's still very spotty especially in those mountain top areas. and of course, power
4:25 am
300,000 people in north carolina without power, without running water. all of these just extremely challenging conditions and we're hearing from officials that this is going to be a matter of weeks to months, if not years, to recover, hopefully, not long for the basic things like water and electricity, sara, it is so heartbreaking to see just how much damage there is and how widespread it is the small village of chimney rock, which is a favorite for towns people, and for tourists alike that one of the hardest hit places, what are you hearing about that particular area was briefly able to get into the lake lore chimney rock area and actually speak with the mayor of a chimney rockets a beautiful little destination tourist town that is so low of by tourists. >> he's calling it total devastation. everything's gone 50% of his neighbors, i'm sure it's a small, tight-knit community, but 50% of his neighbors have lost their

homes. all of the businesses in the business district, they're gone, they're collapses, including his own store has collapsed. he saying that it's hundred percent destroyed. family members can't reach loved ones. self-service is nonexistence. existence. he is asking biden the administration for some help from some financial commitment that they're going to need to rebuild. and he saying that that will take years in his community. sara listen to what else he had to say wrap my head around it to be honest, i'm seeing saw the pictures before i got here. >> i see the damage when i'm here and i just i just just hard to comprehend it. if you think too much about the beautiful chimney right village that i remember from last week it's hard to handle
4:27 am
clearly a mirror in emotional distress, they're thinking about his community and the long road ahead toward rebuilding sara, i'll leave you with this. >> i was also on a chopper yesterday with a non-profit serving these smaller communities that are so stranded. and it became very apparent how rough the roads are, how difficult of a challenges ahead for first responders to reach people and it's also a problem with communications. >> so there are still people missing. they simply can't communicate with anyone. isabel rosales. thank you so much. for giving us that picture this morning of what's happening there in north carolina and still ahead for us, a shelter in place, back in place this morning in georgia after a chemical plant fire, their details ahead and trump turns his focus to tim walz ahead of tonight's vice presidential debate, isn't really the last debate before the election? i'd rather debate, i'd rather have another one to problem is with so far down the line, i'm

4:33 am
great job. people like him a lot. >> he's going up against a moron, a total more on how she picked him as unbelievable. and i think it's a big factor, is something wrong with that guy. he's sick cnn's steve contorno is with us now. steve exactly the kinds of personal attacks at trump campaign says that the president, former president, will not use well, john, it's interesting too, because the campaign yesterday was setting expectations that they expect of walz to have a very strong debate. they said that he is a quote, wily political veteran, very good in debates. and they expect him to be very well-prepared meanwhile, saying that j.d. vance, they reminded people there's only two years into his political career and still had a lot to learn. but look, this is a moment that they really pick j.d. vance for who they believe that he is a gifted public speakers, someone who has been a strong defender of donald trump on television, and someone not afraid to go on the offensive as he has made clear, time again on the campaign trail. take a listen to how he has been sharpening some of his attacks against
4:34 am
governor walz tim walz was the guy who let rioters burned down minneapolis. >> and then kamala harris was the one who build the writers out of jail. so there's an interesting team that sets tim walz gets on his high horse about mind your own damn business. one way of minding your own damn business, john, is to not try to take my children away from me differently, allowing your state, if you military record, the lies about the rank allies, about serving in combat the lives now about ivf even lying about like his food preferences my read on him is that he's a guy who likes to just barely cross the line, right closely watch tonight is how much he focuses attacks on walz versus harris in recent weeks, he has mostly ignored his counterpart on the democratic side, instead focusing a lot of his attacks on vice president harris will see if that changes tonight. also out there talking about the response to hurricane
4:35 am
helene, including some statements that are just flatly not true steve yeah, that's right, john, he wrote on truth social, that this has been a really bad response to the hurricane by the administration. >> he also asserted that georgia governor brian kemp couldn't get a hold of biden to get help, which has been flatly denied by the georgia governor. and when he was asked about this, he really didn't have an explanation or evidence for this. so, you know, one thing i think we'll be watching tonight as whether j.d. vance follows him down this line of attack he has been clear that he will double down on whatever the former president says is we have seen with the attacks that they have waged against springfield, ohio, for example, they have brought on j.d. vance in part to be an attack dog that's why he's in this position where he's kinda losing gain in popularity. he's at -12 in his favor. ability rating, but they're comfortable with that because they've believed that he is strong and defending the ticket
4:36 am
and ultimately this is going to be a choice between donald trump and vice president harris. >> alright, steve contorno in new york. thanks so much, deep joining us right now is republican strategist doug heye and former press secretary to then vp joe biden. kendra bark off. good to see you guys. so kendra, morning, steve and john were just talking about this. now what's happening with trump accusing biden of playing politics with disaster relief though clearly playing politics with disaster relief and doing so, let me play what trump said about biden when it came to georgia disaster relief need some help from the federal government. they have to get together ideally with the governor that governor needs to he's been trying to get them and i'm sure they're going to come through but he's been calling the president, hasn't been able to get him. but they'll come through. i'm sure brian kemp said that he had been on the phone with biden.
4:37 am
>> biden called trump a liar on that kendrick, what does playing politics? with disaster recovery do? i mean, what do you think the impact of that this back-and-forth will be well, it hurts the people at the end of the day, right? i mean, natural disasters are time when people should come together. there should be some sort of unity. there should be an agreement where people come and say let's come and work together fix whatever the issue is. but this is what trump does, right? i mean, he he lives and you've seen it in his record. he during hurricane maria, maria, for instance, down in puerto rico, he withheld billions of dollars of relief for the island until the very end of his administration. and if you look at what project 2025, which his supporters are out there supporting and touting. it cuts funds from fema. it takes aid to the states away and it wants to cut noaa, which is the weather service that helps figure out where the hurricane paths are
4:38 am
going to go, which warrants people where they should be and where they shouldn't be so at the end of the day, this is political posturing, but it's unfair to the people who live in these states who are suffering the most and doug, something you and i've been talking and talking about offline as i mean, you're a son of north carolina and i'm seeing that election officials, there are just now well, starting to try to wrap their arms around how they're going to hold a presidential election in some of these areas, i saw one election expert tells the new york times dug counties have been preparing for early voting sites that may no longer exist. >> they had reserved polling places that may have been swept away in the floodwaters. they have voters who requested at an address since the ballot and cannot receive the ballot, let alone the poll workers and the major disruption to their lives what do you think is the potential impact of hurricane helene on voting? there? >> the short answer is kate, you've laid out what the problems are. i don't think we really know what the impact is. other than yes, a lot of voters may not be able to vote early,
4:39 am
may not be able to mail in their ballots are not receiving mail. whether or not that affects republicans or democrats, trump, or biden more. i don't think we know yet because western north carolina and by the way, about 15 election board, county boards are closed right now is largely the most republican area in the state, but asheville is a democratic stronghold. and i'll tell you that long john silver's that you showed my brother's family lives about 30 miles from there. i have a cousin, kory, who i just found out last night, late last night as brian jason city is finally okay. we couldn't hear for hours. and this is what our days and this is what families in western north carolina, parts of eastern tennessee and georgia are going through as well. and their lack of services, lack of water, lack of infrastructure, all of that is going to have a huge impact. and i would say to donald trump and his campaign be really careful, they're not usually careful about politicizing this for two reasons. one, you could experience a backlash as we're seeing when brian kemp says no, actually none of that's true,

but to state officials in north carolina felt shortchanged in the response from the federal government in hurricane matthew that happened under donald trump's watch. so this could boomerang on him if he's not careful and kendra, let's talk now, transition to talking about the vp debate tonight. >> setting expectations ahead of any debate as a full-time job for campaigns for sure, we've all seen that and maybe some of us on screaming to have taken part in that in years past i want to play for you what the trump campaign is saying about today versus donald trump saying about today himself debates. i want to repeat that. tim walz is very good in debates, really good he's been a politician for nearly 20 years. he'll be very well prepared for tomorrow night. >> he's going up against a moron a total more on how she picked him as unbelievable not on the same page on this for sure. kendra, this does what
4:41 am
we'll look at the end of the day. tim walz came out and said his own expectations, right during the interview process when he was going through it and when vp harris was deciding who to choose, he said to her zero point blank, i'm a really bad debater. he's repeated that along the way. he did it on your network when he did the interview with dana bash. and so he set his own expectations. but look, this is so ironic to begin with, because trump is out there to begin with playing footsie. he he's playing this game of he hasn't even agreed to whether or not he's going to do a second debate. i think part of this is he likes the attention it gets him. he likes that it's all on him and whether or not he should do a second debate and it's frankly not what the voters care about at the end of the day. they care about the issues they care about the policies that the various campaigns are putting forward. >> doug, your choice, choose your own adventure. do you want to do these all in one or do you want to separate them? debate pros and cons strengths and weaknesses. tim walz and
4:42 am
j.d. vance, who do you want to go first? >> well, i'll do tim i'll do tim walz first because look he he's unknown, but he does have this folksy charm. i think that's a strength people, people wreck positively to that. but then when you peel the onion, not very deep, you see whopper after whopper, what was his military rank? well, he doesn't really know what what was going on with ivf and his family while he didn't describe that accurate? currently was he in china for tiananmen square? well, it turns out he wasn't even though he said he was. and that's where i think j.d. vance is going to be relentless and that's when a j.d. vance's strengths on tim walz today, tim walz whoppers what, about then what's its strength for vance is relentlessness. what is his weakness gonen well, it's exactly what tim walz is going to use when he goes after vance and that's going to be on the weirdness we're going to hear about childless cat ladies and so forth. >> and kate, i think one of the interesting things for me is i read that tim walz has been holed up in it in a camp doing to bet debate prep at a place called camp. they're calling it camp north star. and that was
4:43 am
the name of the camp in i think john berman's favorite bill murray movie meatballs, where bill murray gave a speech that said, it just doesn't matter. it just doesn't matter how big that goes. because well excellent ultimately, this race is about donald trump versus kamala harris, right track versus wrong track. the undercard of the heavyweight fight is always forgotten well, relentlessness and weirdness and meet boldness, just pure goodness. it's really good to see you guys. thanks for coming on thanks, sir. thank you. >> sara john berman loves this meatballs there's a lot there. >> sara, to unpack all right. >> let me compose myself. all right. here we go happening today abortion medication will now be designated as a controlled dangerous substance in the state of louisiana, making it a crime to have the drugs without a prescription. mifepristone and misoprostol will now be designated as a schedule for drug like ambien

faqs that one major health system and louisiana has sent out to its health care providers and they do confirm this is going to be stored and locked cabinets and we heard from the department of health the director in new orleans, who told us that her colleagues have been running drills to see how long it takes to get from the emergency bedside in a situation like this to the locked cabinet, obtain the misoprostol and bring it back. and she said that adds minutes to this process which may not sound like a lot, but when somebody is in that emergency situation, that can be very devastating these drugs are also used to treat miscarriages, to manage miscarriages, mifepristone and misoprostol are used in the same way they're used for medication abortion to be able to control a miscarriage. there's fear that pharmacists and doctors won't feel comfortable dispensing are prescribing these medications for that purpose. another thing that changes guys is along with the way these medications are stored, is that now they need to be entered into what's known as a prescription drug management program. that is something for controlled

substances particularly put in place for the opioid epidemic to be able to track how these medications are being used. and that was designed to avoid the risk of overdose and over prescribing. but now these drugs are going to be on that list for people who use them for things like miscarriage. and that's something that's really scaring folks in louisiana two guys, people worried about their privacy as well. >> meg tirrell. thank you so much. appreciate that joke. >> all right. breaking overnight, israel has launched a ground incursion into lebanon. we've got new reporting on what this means and how the white house is responding this morning, and how much would you pay to see your favorite band and concert coldplay fans are in an uproar this morning as tickets went on sale for up to $11,000 hello not judging but coldplay wait is over. tim walz and j.d. vance in their first and only

ground operation that they have launched, that this is going to be targeted raids in southern lebanon going after hezbollah targets. now what we understand from three security sources, one with the nations peacekeeping forces unit fell and two, senior lebanese security sources, they're telling us that israel has not yet launched a full scale invasion into southern lebanon. they're describing this as sporadic raids across the border, but no israeli boots remain on the ground there's no presence of israeli forces. they're only coming in conducting these rates and going back according to the sources. but we also do know from the lebanese state news agency as well as residents in the border region in the south is that there's been intense artillery shelling and airstrikes began last night and his continued into today. residents in the south
4:55 am
describing a terrifying situation with people trapped in their homes. some people in the corridors of their homes away from windows, calling the lebanese army to evacuate them. but the army has not been able to do so. and we've reached out to the lebanese military about this, but we haven't heard back. but what we do know right before the israelis announced this operation the lebanese he's military did redeploying its troops from observation posts on the border into back into towns and villages, into military barracks. is there and has well, laura is continuing to carry out attacks against israel, launching rocket strikes. they say that they are targeting the israeli the military and in the last couple of hours, sara, we've heard from the israeli military warning the residents of 27 villages in the south to evacuate immediately some of these areas being there are being told to move to an area
4:56 am
for some of these villages, it's 30 miles into lebanon. this is only going to exacerbate great. what is a dire humanitarian situation with up to 1 million people already displaced just in the past ten days or so jomana karadsheh. >> thank you so much. and also giving us a vantage point of almost the entirety of beirut where people are fearful this morning. thank you so much. appreciate it, john. >> or it was me now is retired brigadier general steve anderson and former marine corps captain and contributor to the atlantic. elliot ackerman. gentleman, this is a map of the region right here. you can see israel and you can see lebanon there. i want to push it and to southern lebanon here, i'm going to show you where the border is between israel and lebanon golan is right there all the operations that we know of these raids are happening in this region here between the border and the litani river in some places, it's like two miles, barely two miles in some places is as much as 20 miles general well, first to you, what can israel accomplish by conducting these
4:57 am
cross border raids into this relatively small region well, thanks john. >> it's great to be with you this morning and it's great to be on with mr. akerman as well. his retinue. great article here in the atlantic that everybody needs to read, but look what they're trying to do is they're trying to exploit success. i mean, it had some tremendous success taken out hezbollah leadership recently here with all the attacks, the walkie-talkie attacks, and of course taken out in his rallies. >> and so they're trying to destroy all the launching sites all the military facilities. >> and apparently at a significant tunnel network that is in that region. i've been there a couple of times. it's very mountainous, very difficult. so they're trying to knock out operationally those bilcher facilities, but they're also trying to pressure iran internally they're week, they've been hit hard. the russians or the israelis have shown that they can penetrate the leadership in iran. and so these folks are very nervous. so they're sending a very clear message to
4:58 am
iran. hey, you guys need to back off and stop supporting all your proxies. are we going to come after you next. >> and elliott the general here did a nice job of promoting your article, which is terrific and there's a lot going on in it. one aspect of it though, is you stressed the military need to try to defeat hezbollah iran at the same time. but in terms of defeating are crushing hezbollah. does this go far enough in your mind mean, israel is already taken some really significant steps to strategically degrading hezbollah's leadership. >> and i think what we're seeing right now is just a new phase of a multipronged operation. and those incursions are really going to deny has the capability of a rocket launch sites that they've had into northern israel. and he denied and the ability to launch any incursions inside of israel so we're going to have to see how this plays out in the days ahead. but israel is
4:59 am
engaged right now in a multi-front war. and it's fighting to win and while we have you on this subject, and i'll put the whole region up so people can see you have iran over here, israel and lebanon right here, elliot, in your article, you make the case that the united states has an interest here and should make decisions somewhat differently than they did in ukraine. >> explain starting to see more clearly as you know, there is a multi-theater war going on here and there is an axis of powers that exist in the world of rod, russia, north korea. >> all of whom wish the united states and liberal western democracies around the world. hill, i just returned from ukraine about ten days ago. one of the great challenges that our ukrainian allies are facing on the battlefield. there are shaheed drones manufactured in iran and sent to russia. so our ally, our allies, are fighting these enemies. and i think we
5:00 am
as a nation, it's in our best interests to support our allies so that they can win those fights. so they aren't fights that the united states finds itself emission. i think the incrementalism that we've seen in which there's a perpetual calls for ceasefires are constantly putting the brakes on our allies. it doesn't serve our allies well, but ultimately, it doesn't serve the united states well walz's these conflicts to prepare to perpetuate and not be one in general, we've got about 30 seconds left. >> you were talking about the missile range, trying to cut off hezbollah's ability to strike inside israel. this map shows the various ranges of the weapons that hezbollah seems to have now, i mean, can you cut off their ability to launch at this point? if you only go into the south of they need to do is they need to take out a ballistic missile capability that got the extended range throughout israel. >> now last week, they fired a ballistic missile. so that's one of the immediate operational intense of this attack into so
