the east coast, a live look at the capitol on this friday morning here in washington, dc. good morning, everyone. i'm kasie hunt. it's wonderful to have you with us. there are just 32 days until election day and more than 1 million ballots have already been submitted. across 30 states with the latest cnn poll of polls showing kamala harris and donald trump, essentially tied both trump and harris campaigns are really narrowing their focus in on the battleground states new this morning, president, former president barak obama will hit the trail for kamala harris, chris crisscrossing swing states throughout the coming weeks. aides telling cnn the former president is concerned about democratic complacency in such a tight race. yesterday, harris appeared alongside prominent republican liz cheney in ripon, wisconsin the birthplace of the republican party i was a trump started spray tanning. i have never voted for a democrat
2:03 am
but this year, i am proudly casting my vote for vice president kamala harris the former wyoming lawmaker, of course, the daughter of former vice president, very conservative vice president dick cheney well liz cheney lost for congress she was terrible. >> liz cheney is a stupid warhawk. all she wants to do is shoot missiles at paypal. i really think it hurts. i think frankly, if kamala i think they hurt each other, i think they are so bad. both of them trump's campaign taking a more untraditional approach on the ground, trying to target irregular voters in areas that his campaign didn't focus on four years ago there are seven battleground states. i actually think we have a chance at winning all seven, but only if we must are asked for the next 32 days all right, joining us now is bloomberg political
2:04 am
editor, laura davidson. >> laura, good morning. wonderful to have you back. >> let's let's talk a little bit about where things stand today. >> we can start with liz cheney here she we knew she had vowed she was going to do whatever she could to make sure that donald trump never gets near the oval office. again, that's kind of her framing on it. they obviously tried to underscore the symbolism by where they held this event going to the birthplace of the republican party in wisconsin. the bottom-line question, how much does it move the needle? >> that's the real question here. >> and you know, liz cheney, dick cheney, her father, has also come out and endorsed harris she has been a trump critic for a long time. >> should we even sat on the january 6 commission she has been very outspoken about his threat to democracy. so it's unclear that she's going to really be able to but, you know, pull away people who are thinking about supporting trump now. but she gives a permission structure to some people who may stay home or just not interested in any voting for trump to vote for harris? >> yeah. >> i mean, the big question again in places and i think
2:05 am
we're going to see our jake tapper reported yesterday that she and some of the other republican women who worst kind of swept up in all this. cassidy hutchinson, alyssa farah griffin, and others are going to go to the collar counties of pennsylvania, right? bucks county, chester county area to try to find those very voters. the nikki haley type voters especially women who need the permission structure that you are talking about. let's talk for a second though. i'm one of the things that of course we saw happen this week was the release of jack smith's new major hundred 56 page filing about january 6, right. in some places, it was cast as an october surprise, but i will say the sources that i have talked to really question whether it's going to matter in the election. stephen collinson, who sort of writes these big picture pieces for us here at cnn. he wrote this new focus on trump's refusal to accept the result of the last election and the january 6 attack on the capitol might seem like a political disaster for the ex-president. >> but it's a mark of trump's success in rewriting history, that this is not necessarily an
2:06 am
election defining issue. >> how do you look at this? >> i think that that's right on the mark. the issues we know that people care about are more of these pocketbook issues. the economy jobs, interest rates as well as things like immigration. and that january 6 isn't factoring into the calculus as much this year was supposed to be the year that trump was spending all year in court dealing with his various myriad legal troubles really, he would just spent a couple of weeks in may. that was a long time ago now and trump's legal problems and both whether it be classified documents or his role in january 6 are not top of mind for people and it's not what polls show people are making decisions on. >> it's like the courthouse campaign that wasn't right. i mean, we were all expecting to be covering that when we were looking at what how this year is going to unfold in the primary season and it just hasn't happened that way also, one of the other noteworthy developments yesterday was the firefighters union major firefighters union basically deciding not to endorse anybody. this follows, of
2:07 am
course the teamsters did did something similar. but historically they have endorsed the democratic candidate. they endorsed joe biden in 2020. what does that say about kamala harris and kind of the state of the race? >> this is not a great sign for her support him on weren't working class voters don't know that the firefighters union was the first union to endorse joe biden when he announced that he was running back in 2020 you know, between the teamsters, between this it's not some week signs of that, particularly among white men for the harris campaign, however, will also note that the dock strike was announced. there would be a suspension and the dockworkers will return back to work today the biden administration is really touting that as a success. so you could maybe see reshift in messaging there alright. >> laura davis and starting us off this morning, laura, thank you very much for being here on a friday. i appreciate it all right. >> coming up here on cnn this morning, israel targeting hezbollah leadership in beirut

beirut southern suburbs, the us back lebanese army reap reporting the strikes killed two of their soldiers. 1.2 million lebanese people have now been displaced by the fighting according to the world health organization, at least 28 health care workers in lebanon none have been killed in the past 24 hours. israel also vowing to retaliate against iran for last week's deadly missile attack the state department believes the israeli war cabinet is still trying to decide what to do. president biden says he's hoping to avoid any major escalation middle there's an all out you going to avoid it a lot? >> all alright let's go live to london, bring in cnn's max foster for us. max. good morning to you. this of course, a very tense situation,
2:14 am
although there do seem to be signs here coming out of the white house that there's nothing imminent, right now, as of course, the jewish holidays have started here, the new year, rosh hashanah which is of course, celebrated in israel and the the wall street journal, though, writes that the white house has been really blind hindsight. by a lot of what we've seen here. and they note that president biden hasn't spoken to benjamin netanyahu's since august 21. what does that tell you about the risks here? >> well, a lot has happened since then escalated to extraordinary levels. you couldn't imagine last week in lebanon so benjamin netanyahu is cracking on without consulting with his major partner and you got to look at the language coming from the u.s. you remember kasie, we're
2:15 am
talking about this very clear call from the us and other allies for a ceasefire across the israel, lebanon border that didn't happen. we're now hearing from us officials that israel does have a right two carry out very specific targeting within lebanon. what you're seeing in beirut at the moment. so it seems that whatever the u.s. says israel isn't responding right now. we don't know exactly what the conversations are behind the scenes. for example, maybe israel has been planning something wider if the top two leaders aren't speaking between israel and the u.s. it's a problem and clearly us isn't playing into the decision-making in a way that it might have hoped we heard yesterday, max, you and i talked about it on this show. >> president biden basically say directly that no, he does not think that israel should strike nuclear research sites in iran in retaliation for this, i want to show you what donald trump had to say about that yesterday. and then we'll
2:16 am
talk about on the other side, watch to make the statement, please leave their nuclear alone i would tell you that that's not the right answer. that was the craziest answer because you know what soon they're going to have nuclear weapons? since then you're going to have problems but max, what do i mean, what do you make of that well, you know so many people around the world. he don't sound the complexities which most people don't understand the complexities because it's, is very complicated it's a very logical argument, isn't it? you are concerned about iran using nuclear weapons and you take out the nuclear facilities, but the entire g7 see that as highly provocative and they see an alternative solution presume ultimately to have some sort of negotiation over those nuclear facilities. most diplomats are saying that's a really bad dear donald trump suggesting is very logical. >> i mean, the other potential very damaging target of course, is the oil installations we
2:17 am
should undermine iranian economy, which perhaps is a, is a more effective strategy to undermine the leadership of iran, which is what benjamin netanyahu has been very clear on. >> he says he does the poor persian culture and the people of iran. his issue is with the leadership in iran. >> yeah, i will say max also, when you think about what trump said there what biden has said, there are, there are things that you do behind the scenes and there are words that you use in public. and as you know, as someone who studies optics of this of all sorts of different, of different things that that can really matter, right? what you're doing behind the scenes, what you're saying in public. i thought it was very noteworthy that the biden was out there basically saying no, don't do this on camera. max, always grateful to have you. thank you so much. have a good weekend. >> alright, still to come here after the break, recovery efforts continue in the wake of hurricane helene's devastation. >> and now the storm's aftermath becoming a central focus of the presidential campaign. >> plus, the verdict is in for three former memphis police officers involved in the fatal

2:24 am
so many locations over the southwest, we always focus in on phoenix, but it's just because we've got this never-ending broken record of records being broken. i don't know how else to say that, right. ten consecutive days of daily high temperatures broken just this month and we've had the hottest high temperatures this month of the month of october. so just millions of people impacted by this excessive heat warnings and heat advisory for much of the southwestern portions of california, the interior of nevada to arizona. this is a heat risk map from the national oceanic atmospheric administration. see those purples, those shades of red, especially in those low elevation valleys that's where some of the most intense heat is expected, and that is either major to extreme, of course, that means that vulnerable populations, the youngest and our most elderly can be impacted by this excessive heat. so we're not seeing any relief that's going to continue. that's really the story going forward for the southwest, the east coast, looking fantastic this weekend hurricane helene recovery efforts will stay dry. so
2:25 am
hopefully we can get out of the water levels too ten years to come down in some of those rivers. tropical atlantic though, we are just rocking and rolling, it seems like the peak of the hurricane season season, even though we've passed that, we've got major hurricane kurt, not a threat to land, but i do want to focus on what's happening across the gulf of mexico we've seen an increase now from the national hurricane center, regardless of if this gets name that doesn't matter, it will bring a lot of rain, the potential for flooding across south florida. the last thing they need after all brynn, they got from helene last week, kasie can d all right. >> derek van dam for us this morning, derek, thank you so much. see you next hour. >> still ahead here on cnn this morning, the world watches to see what happens next in the middle east as israel weighs their response to iran's massive ballistic missile attack plus in the wake of hurricane helene's destruction, the response and recovery run into the middle up campaign politics we are here for the long haul. this is the worst response in the history of hurricane

campaign issue. during a tour of damage in georgia, kamala harris striking a tone of unity and it underscoring the federal response, including the deployment of active-duty troops we are here for the long haul there is the work that we have done together that was the immediate response. >> well, preparation for and then the immediate response after. but there's a lot of work that's going to need to happen over the coming days, weeks, and months georgia's republican governor brian kemp was not with harris, the sitting vice president during her visit but he will be with donald trump today in the former president's second trip to the state this week in the wake of the storm trump has been claiming without evidence that the biden administration is withholding aid from states including georgia in north carolina, state's that are much closer in polling since kamala harris entered the race they saw the fema money just like they stole it from a bank. so they could give it to their illegal immigrants. that they

want to have vote for them this season, you know, they're trying to get them on the voters. we cannot let that the happen the white house pushing back against his allegations, they released a statement that reads this quote, this is false. the disaster relief fund is specifically appropriated by congress to prepare for respond to recover from and mitigate impacts of natural disasters is completely separate from other grant programs administered by fema for the department of homeland security? joining me now to talk more about this, kevin frey, washington correspondent for spectrum news, new york, one. kevin, good morning. wonderful to see you. let's let's talk about these disaster at politics because the optics of this and it campaign season can be very significant. if you remember back to chris christie and barak obama, the wake of superstorm from sandy really got under the skin of romney aides to see those pictures. now, brian kemp not appearing with the sitting vice president. what does it say to you about the state of the state of things and how do you think this ultimately cuts in the election, right? >> so i mean, look for kamalaharris, this is both a
2:33 am
difficulty and also an opportunity for her because she can play this presidential role of but above politics and also be the consoler in chief, taking on one of these presidential responsibilities where you're actually outreaching to folks, making them feel better in their time of crisis. the same time it has given rise to a new ally line of attack, even if it's not based in fact for the trump campaign and trump is able to appear with brian kemp with other folks to show that he is making inroads with parts of the party that quite frankly were quite critical of him, just within the last few years. >> yeah the central challenge here too. i mean as this response goes on there potentially is some risk, i think for democrats about all of the people that are still missing in the mountains of north carolina. >> how much of a challenge is that potentially for harris considering she is the sitting vice president, right. >> and we i believe it is now the second deadliest hurricane
2:34 am
incidents since hurricane katrina, correct me if i'm wrong there, and we all remember the devastating impact that that had on george bush's legacy in the immediate aftermath of that in terms of people questioning his ability to lead through such a crisis. as we continue to see these communities that are cut off in north carolina and other parts of the country, particularly in these key battleground states. let's not forget that that could pose all sorts of difficulties for her as she tries to, you know, outreach these sunbelt states and just the logistics of the communities to have people voting in communities facing the kind of damage that we're seeing on the screen right now, that's going to be another piece of this as we kind of hurdle frankly towards election day, correct. >> kevin, i want to ask you about another story that it broke yesterday, which is congressman mike lawler. >> you of course covered the new york delegation from here in washington. he is in a swing district. there was this photograph that has surfaced. it was obtained by the new york times of him using make-up to darken his face. he was on cnn
2:35 am
last night and he did apologize for it. he tried to explain himself. let's watch what he said 18 years ago but i certainly with wisdom and age understand that that is not something i would do today and certainly understand why people would be upset or offended by it. and for that, i'm sorry. but for me, there was no ill intent. there was no effort to malign or make fun of or disparage black americans. it was really an effort to pay homage to somebody who was a musical idle for me how is this story in his apology going to play in this race? >> i mean, the language i found interesting was this idea of intense. where's the line drawn between homage and offensive given the history of blackface this is a district that is incredibly critical for
2:36 am
democrats though, folks that i've spoken to in new york see this is probably the most difficult one for them to flip, or at least one of the most difficult ones for them to flip within the constellation of competitors they've seats across new york. you are seeing obviously democrats are kind of getting their act together after 2022 when they lost all these seats across new york and their seemingly like, oh, we have all this oppo research there's maybe we should start dumping it in these last couple of key weeks in the lead up to the election day for congressman hakeem jeffries, who wants to become speaker, hakeem jeffries. all of these districts in his backyard are critical to his pathway to getting that so whether or not how this plays, even if it's just a razor thin edge, could be critical in this district and keep in mind the guy that he's running against is a black man. >> yet tell us a little bit more about the dynamics of that race. who is his opponent, and what's the makeup of the district in terms of people who may be affected by this right. >> so his opponent is former congressman mondaire jones, who
2:37 am
was in congress for one term ultimately, during the redistricting shuffle of a few years ago, ended up in manhattan in a different district in new york, and then decided to come back to the hudson valley to run in this district again after he lost his bid for the manhattan seat so lawler has been basically painting him as kind of going wherever he wants to try to get the political edge be trying and manhattan trying that in the hudson valley. how can we trust him mondaire jones is trying to basically paints lawler as being a trump sycophant, even if he is a moderate, that he would be willing to vote along with him. there are thousands of african american hurricane voters in this district. so how this might play with them is going to be one of the big questions. >> yeah so kevin, big picture mean we've obviously we hear trump talk a lot about new york. >> he's campaigned in new york at certain points unclear how much that is connected to some of his court cases. >> york. >> but when you are kind of
2:38 am
looking at this campaign every day, ai, are you seeing anything in these house races on the ground there that gives you a sense of how this race may play in swing states that we think are actually going to move for trump so i want to emphasize that new york is not going to turn red in the presidential cycle. let's make that plain and clear. >> however, the word battleground has been tossed around involving new york and his democrats have argued to me it as a battleground when it comes to the congressional districts when joe biden was a top, the tickets democrats behind the scenes would argue to me that he's not polling as well as they were in these congressional districts commonly, harris is ultimately somewhat flip that dynamic and they've seen like we have seen across the country, this galvanizing effect of people getting excited. >> the question is, will it be enough to tilt the edge 2020 the top of the ticket? governor kathy hochul, did not perform all that well against the republican opponent within a single-digit margin if kamala harris can push it back into double-digits, perhaps there could be a down-ballot effect that's really interesting. >> i was talking to one member of the new york delegation not

hezbollah to settle itself in these places in the future, the severe blows against hezbollah in all areas in beirut in the beqaa valley in south lebanon will continue on. >> the southern suburbs of lebanon's capital, beirut, pounded overnight by israeli airstrikes says two of its soldiers were killed. israel is still considering how it will retaliate against iran for last week's deadly missile attack. it's not clear how much influence, if any, the u.s. will have on their decision look there are a sovereign country. they do make their own decisions we talk with them at a number of different levels about what we believe is in their interests, what we believe is in the interests the region will continue to do that. but ultimately it's up for them as it is for any sovereign country to make their own decisions right? >> new this morning, iran supreme leader, taking the rare step of personally leading friday prayers in tehran in his remarks, vowing, quote, israel will never defeat hamas and

hezbollah and promising that iran will attack israel well, again, quote, if needs be colonel cedric leighton joins us now he's cnn military analyst, former us air force intelligence officer, colonel. good morning. it's good to see you. you heard matt miller there. he's the state department spokesman. he says israel is a sovereign nation. they make their own decisions. is that a veiled way of saying that israel is not listening to the u.s. it's anymore good morning, kasie. >> yes, i think in this case, it probably is. of course it is absolutely true that is really as it's already nation but in the past, we've been able to dissuade israel from mounting attacks against iran directly. they're were indications back in a few decades ago that the israelis wanted to go and attack the is the iranian nuclear facilities. i even, even as late as late 2009 to 2010, area so there have been
2:46 am
places where the u.s. has exercise i asked a great deal of sway over the israelis and dissuaded them from doing operations like that, from conducting operations like that but in this particular moment in, at this particular moment in time, there have been several instances. the operations in gaza or prime example, where the u.s. has wanted to curtail what israelis were doing in terms of the ferocity of their attacks. and the israelis have not listened does it seem to you that the israelis may be prepared to strike iranian nuclear facilities here. i mean, we've heard several hawkish, mostly former israeli officials coming on the air here at cnn. and quite frankly, an urging the current leadership two to take advantage of what they are arguing as an opportunity. obviously, president biden came out and said pretty directly that he doesn't. he said no, he doesn't think that that's what israel should do, where where do you think this is headed next in that regard?
2:47 am
>> well, what will probably happen, kasie is that will go with the israelis will go with a tactic where they'll go in and take out economic targets and military targets and not necessarily go after the harder of the iranian nuclear program. that actually is a difficult target just from a technical standpoint, because the iranians have harden the facilities, the nuclear facilities, and they actually do things like study how strong it can make concrete in their universities. so they've had a lot of time to harden their facilities, a lot of time if things very difficult. but iran is not invulnerable. so for the most part, the israelis will probably seek to, i've heard them economically that is attacking for example, oil terminals such as the major oil terminal around charg island. and those are the kinds of things that could happen. and probably the most likely, although i do think that this will be a much more severe
2:48 am
response than the one the israelis mounted backing in april when they basically took out one facility in s near s fan. >> this is something that will be beyond the symbolic and will actually have some teeth to it. colonel, do you see this escalating out of control? president biden also was said yesterday, we played him a little bit earlier in the program saying that he thinks there's still possibly a way to avert a wider war. do you agree with that assessment or do you think this is on track to really >> well, i think we're kind of at a fork in the road. kasie, i think president biden, right? that there is a very good possibility that this can de-escalate at some point of note yesterday, the president of iran, the new president, if iran was in qatar talking to the emir of qatar, qatar is the granddaughter law huge, if you will, between iran and the rest of the world. and that indicates to me that there is some movement, diplomatic front
2:49 am
where the iranians are trying to de-escalate from their point of view. of course, the israelis are very angry at what happened to them, both from hamas and from hezbollah. and do they are the very least going to pursue those targets in both gaza and lebanon. as far as iran is concerned, because of the latest attack, they believe that they have to do nothing against that. there will be i think there will be some degree of conflicts still coming if it blows out of proportion, that could very well be the case. but i think there is definitely the possibility for an off-ramp after the israelis respond to what the range is due to that right. >> and of course this all taking place against the backdrop of a unprecedented historic presidential campaign that is entering its final days and undoubtedly something that israeli officials certainly are extraordinarily aware of as they but make their various decisions here. colonel cedric leighton, always grateful to have you on the program, sir. thank you very much for being here you bet kasie, always good
