10:02 am
general say the social media platform this harming children's mental health. we're following these major developing stories and many more all coming in right here to cnn news central washington clinton and my colleague and co-host, boris sanchez is live in florida following the very latest on hurricane milton, which is where we begin this hour, we are watching is this powerful category four storm is barreling through the gulf of mexico with florida directly in its sights right now, mass evacuations are underway across the state and we're seeing this long lines, traffic jams, and also many gas stations that are running out of fuel the mayor of tampa says tankers are on their way to refill gas stations in the area and here's a look at milton from space. this storm. it is just huge as you can see here on the
10:03 am
impacts, could be catastrophic with potentially life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds here's how tampa's without any drama to station whatsoever, if you choose to stay and what are those evacuation areas you are going to die. >> but this is something that i have never seen in my life, and i can tell you that anyone who was born and raised in the tampa bay area has never seen anything like this before people need to get out the stark warning boris, you're there in treasure island, which of course is in the tampa bay area. what are folks preparing for there >> it's hard to imagine seeing the state of this community in treasure island a barrier island on the gulf coast of florida. and imagining that anyone could survive what they are about to witness from hurricane milton what you see
10:04 am
here around me is the result of hurricane helene. this is debris from a category four storm that made landfall hundreds of miles from here. and this debris we're talking about mattresses, water heaters, scrap metal, glass it's just out for blocks and blocks and blocks. one of the first things that you notice when you come into treasure island is the smell, because the trash is everywhere and when you're looking at a potential 15 foot storm surge on top of about a foot of water in rainfall plus 125 mile an hour winds. this as one neighbor told me, has the potential to become a countless number of missiles. and it's not just this pile here or further down this block. i want you to look at a scene that we've seen multiple times across pinellas county. there is trash everywhere and this former us pile, nearly 20 feet high is roughly a few hundred yards from the beach. the
10:05 am
beaches actually just behind those buildings over there and on the other side, there's a bay. so you can imagine the water is going to come into this community if the forecast stands as it is and essentially make an enormous mess of things i spoke to one neighbor named matt, who was here for hurricane helene. he said that he had to get out from his first floor apartment. he got into chest high-water. he made it to the second floor and survived. this time he says he's not taking any chances. here's more of what he shared with me we don't know where it's going to hit at might hit here, might hit south, might hit north. and it looks like it's gonna be devastating, particularly for buildings like this, because he's are not hurricane proof buildings still out there. it has been picked up he's going to turn to the missiles are gonna be, they're gonna blow this way below that way we don't know what's going to happen. these things, sorry so yeah, it's not good people around here. they need to get out of here. well someplace else is silly to stick around here it's not worth it
10:06 am
me, i did speak though. >> brianna to a bus driver who's stationed outside of city hall here on treasure island. she's been designated to help evacuated folks that want to get out she says that people here have until 4:00 p.m. two register to evacuated, but so far today, only about 40 hours from that deadline her buses completely empty. nobody has come at this point to evacuate yet. i want to get the latest on the forecast now and see exactly where milton stands. let's go live to elisa raffa, who's in the weather center for us at least aware for is the hurricane now and in terms of strength, what are we seeing? i know there was some speculation that it might be reinvigorated to a category five, i guess the latest word is that it's gonna stay at a strong category four yes, right now, it is teetering on that category five strength. that's got 150 mile per hour winds, 156 miles per hour makes it a category five so again, risk kind of splitting hairs. harris kind of teetering along that border, but that ai is wakening up. it looks clear and symmetrical. so it's still
10:07 am
keeping its intensity and it's strength still effect category four storm 500 miles south and west of tampa bay we still have it waning a little bit in that intention. nice still though, a major hurricane as it makes landfall on the problem with the kind of wobbling that it's doing in the intensity is what that will do is make the storm wider. it's going to doable in size, becoming fat or so it will have a much greater reach for those damaging winds that's why we now have hurricane warnings in effect from coast-to-coast, from the east coast all the way to the atlantic coast. we could see a category two hurricane swiping through orlando. that's helped far wide reaching this thing could have and i was incredibly troubled to see that huge mountain of debris behind you because we're looking at 110 mile per hour winds from tampa down to sarasota, that all of those things behind you will absolutely be projectiles hurricane force winds, going towards the east coast. here's what i'm talking about. the storm again, getting wider, dropped it will storm force winds, taking over much of the peninsula. the hurricane force
10:08 am
winds from coast to coast, that means widespread power outages. and this is the un-survivable part. this is why you're hearing the officials use such grave wording because ten to 15 feet of storm surge, you have to escape that. you have that from tampa down to sarasota storm surge, even still up to ten feet, even as far south as fort myers, the entire close, we'll have that ocean sloshing inland. plus you have the heavy rain coming down from the sky up to a foot possible. so multiple hazards boris number of hazards. >> and as you noted, elisa very, very widespread. i was talking earlier about the debris that we saw from hurricane helene, again, that made landfall hundreds of miles from here. it's not hard to imagine that further south and further north from where this hurricane milton is expected to make landfall. people will be feeling the effects actually want to take you now live to fort myers with cnn's carlos suarez, who has been spending the day there observing preparations carlos, what are
10:09 am
you seeing where you are well, boris, the folks here in fort myers are getting ready for this hurricane. >> we've been here for a good part of the day and business owners are putting up plywood. they are getting ready for what's expected to be some severe flooding to give you a sense of exactly what i'm talking about here. and i almost felt because they're laying out this tarp here. you can see these folks have laid out as much as they can. these bags that they believe can absorb some of this water. and we're told that just two years ago during hurricane ian the water out here, it got to about four feet and with the forecast for the storm surge with this hurricane is expected to be about six to ten feet and so we're looking at more flooding in a storm that is hitting right now to the north of here this place here was actually supposed to open in october of 2024, we're told that they were just weeks away from hopefully opening their doors, but now they're getting ready for the storm the concern as we move throughout the week, of course, is this thing. and one of the reasons why for part of
10:10 am
fort myers to be evacuated in an evacuation zone is because there is a river just the other side of this street. it's called the kaluza hatchie and it goes out into the gulf of mexico and it also goes into lake okeechobee in the central part of florida. as that storm surge moves through, again, anywhere between 16 to ten feet as the six to a foot of rain falls and has all of that wind moves through that river is going to crash, that is going to overflow. and so what you're going to see is all of that water well, rushing to where we are right now. and that is the big concern for the folks in this part of fort myers, boris much for that update. i want to go back to a moment ago when we were describing how difficult it is for community to recover from two major hurricanes so close to each other. and the amount of debris that there is scattered, not only here on treasure island, but across the western coast of florida i'm joined now by dan whelan. he's
10:11 am
the vice president of operations for college honks. you folks help to remove debris and move around the sort of stuff that comes loose after hurricanes. i'm wondering what you make of what we've seen around the community with so many piles like this. and then the potential for that to become a projectile. >> yeah. no, it's been bizarre. i mean, i've been doing this for close to ten years and say nothing like it. we've been go bell the bell ever since helene touchdown and then obviously when milton was forecast to be arrival, i mean, it was just an emergency mode for all of us. so round-the-clock, the greater tampa bay area, we've we've really banded together to do the best we can to prepare for this. but ultimately, there's still a lot left to do and to that point, is there much time to do anything else? >> but evacuated i think that's really it. >> you know, a lot of the orders had been placed as far as based on certain zones where you live. so if you do live in those it's probably in your best
10:12 am
>> city needs that. they need our help. everybody was like, hey, what can i do to help? what have you heard from officials that have been working with college hunks to get stuff out. do they have confidence that enough has been done to move the stuff that needs to be moved. i think we've made a really, really large dance so the city of tampa actually called us over the weekend, was like hey, there's still a lot of stuff still outstanding on from the last hurricane. can you guys
10:13 am
help? and so we were fortunate enough to be able to answer that call. we've hauled over 100 tons of debris just in the past two days alone. so the streets look a lot better than they did a couple of days before. but again, to your point, there's still a lot but still obviously is left over. that still needs to be done. yeah. for folks that are in communities like that, it is important important, as dan said, to heed the warnings and get out while you still can dan whale and with college monks were very much appreciate the time, thanks for joining us so briana, there is and the important thing for folks to keep in mind, again, is that time that are still in the western part of florida vet are thinking about evacuating, you better make that decision very soon. >> yeah. let's hope some people get on that bus that you were talking about there, boris and a head still to come this, our vice president harris saying that former president trump lacks empathy on a basic level, four for spreading misinformation about the response to hurricane helene will have war on her interview
10:14 am

10:19 am
former president trump for spreading disinformation in the wake of hurricane helene, watch i mean, we're talking about real human beings and their lives and then losing everything free. think the idea that somebody would been playing political games for the sake of himself. but this is so consistent about donald trump. he puts himself before the needs of other, i feared that he really lacks empathy on a very basic level to care about the suffering of other people and then understand the role of a leader it's not to beat people down, it's to lift people up and national politics correspondent, eva mckend is covering the vice president's events today. >> she kept coming back to that refrain that trump is selfish and thinks more about himself than the people he's supposed to be serving. what else stood out to you? well, she used the platform it's audience of women, brianna, to outline a new policy proposal.
10:20 am
>> she has talked for a long time about the sandwich generation. those are adults that have to take care of their kids and their parents at the same time. geez, credibility in this space with organizers here like karen action. so she leaned into this again today, essentially arguing that medicare needs to be expanded in order to meet people's basic needs. so let's listen what i'm proposing is that basically what we will do is allow medicare to cover in home health care. >> and it's about dignity for that individual or mitigates about independence for that individual. i mean, what people are declining skills to some extent. but their dignity has their pride is not decline. they want, they want to stay in their home. they don't want to go somewhere else. plus for the family to send them to a residential care facility to hire somebody. so expensive now, another part of that interview that the former president is seizing on brianna
10:21 am
is when sonny asked her how she would differentiate herself from president biden, how she was different in the moment she said nothing immediately comes to mind. >> now, she later added that she would have a republican in her cabinet and that would be different it was already too late because the former president and his allies are arguing that voting for her would be an extension of president biden's policies. but listen, this is always going to be a persistent challenge for the vice president trying to characterize herself as a change candidate. even though she is in fact in the administration certainly a difficult task. eva mckend. thank you so much for that. let's talk now with cnn senior political commentator and co-host of the view ana navarro. let's talk about that moment that eva was just discussing. this was a key question to answering the interview here it is. >> would you have done something differently than president biden during the past four years there is done a thing that comes to mind in
10:22 am
terms of and i've been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact all right. anna nauta thing comes to mind, does she need a better answer on that question because there are voters who are looking for an alternative to biden rather than a continuation of him >> you very difficult balance to navigate, right. because she's been the vice president joe biden. she's got great loyalty and affection for him, and respect for him they had a very good the administration in terms of achievements. and i think she did come back to later in the show and talked about how she would appoint a republican to the catalog. that to me as a republican, a disgruntled republican who is voting for kamala harris and actively supporting is very important. >> because what i have worked for many, many decades now being american, is that big
10:23 am
problems in america require bipartisan so i think it's important that we not live and govern can an echo chamber where everybody agrees and everybody is a yes man. >> yes, bowman and everybody comes from the same experience so for me, that tells me a lot about this coalition that kamala harris has building where she's got people like liz cheney and dick cheney on the right and people like alexandria ocasio-cortez and bernie sanders because we need a precedent that will represent americans. and i think that's what she's signaling by saying, i will have a republican, something that bill clinton did here's secretary of defense, bill cohen was a republican, did a very fine job you a floridian, asked her about the hurricane response she went back to a refrain that trump is selfish, which by the way, she also said when she was discussing in the border when
10:24 am
she was talking about january 6, this idea that trump puts himself before the people he's supposed to serve. >> do you think that that message is more salient with some key voters than arguing that trump is a threat to democracy moment we are right where we within the next day there's going to be a monster hurricane hitting my state of florida we are like an check what is happening. and these attacks on feel like i've lived in florida 40 i have gone through countless hurricanes. >> any emergency and cloyds the thing i most want is to see the federal, state, the federal state and local governments working together to help invoking need this thing that donald trump is doing is putting a target on the backs of fema workers, the men and women who have left their homes
10:25 am
lester comfort to go help other people to go rescue, force to go find quartiles often in perilous condition, and they are being attacked because donald trump has chosen to use it as a political issue and is lying i mean by that fema has having to take up precious time and resources to fight misinformation from a former president. >> this is the first time in my life that this happens. and i think she is right to call it out as selfish and as ridiculous. >> it is dangerous there are people who are actually be me this lies. he is spewing in the midst of this crisis, grace from helene and prices that we have facing us with hurricane milton thank you, anna. thank you so much really appreciate you being with us. ana navarro. thanks thank you. >> brianna and right now, it is the race to clear debris is the
10:26 am
race to flee florida ahead of hurricane milton's landfall, you're looking here at live pictures from treasure island where boris sanchez will be brought i'm casting live for us from in just a moment here. >> stay with cnn our breaking news coverage continues after this break my kids it's like your generation has evolved past traditional political symbols. and there's room for everyone. >> yeah tend to exaggerate go ahead just call them yourself thank you for calling out. now, this is how can i help you do you really have medicare plans that covered dental, vision and hearing? yes. all three plus we have plans that include a monthly allowance for certain over-the-counter products really see their craig but
10:27 am
what's all this is going to cost me? >> we know things can add up quickly that's why etna has medicare advantage plans with as zero-dollar monthly plan premium and zero-dollar preventive screenings oh, i like that then i think you'll like our strong network of doctors and you can manage it all in our mobile app on our website. >> i told you, let me walk you through your plan options and find the one that's right for you. that'd be great. >> thank you don't wait. >> call 1877. >> edna 08 to find an aetna medicare advantage plan that meets your unique leave. and let's make healthier happen together. >> now, what was this about me exaggerating the best part of any of those renovations shows is always a transformation. they show you at the end i'm brian gary here with brian price from renewal by anderson and he's going to show us some of their transformations. >> hey, brian, let me ask you if you remodeled your kitchen, would you choose the same styles you had? no same can go for your windows and doors for example, you're standing here doing the dishes and these girls totally block your view
10:28 am
with our window style. you can easily see the whole backyard. >> the black israeli, nice to okay, here's a question i get all the time. what makes renewal by anderson different? >> well, we do offer something that a lot of other window companies and contractors don't. and that's amazing financing options. a lot of times you can upgrade your windows and doors and not pay anything for an entire year. >> and, do a lot of people finance. >> it makes the job even more affordable. so most of our customers findings, how did your window material compared to biden such windows are really low end, which means they don't always last. our composite fiber material is two times stronger than vinyl, so it's warranted the last decades. >> okay, let's shift gears let's talk about doors. >> sure. this customer wanted a door with a lot more style. >> our doors beautiful provides enhanced security and is designed to be whether tight wow, it really changes the whole look how does somebody get a price? >> i'll just call him, make an appointment where the replacement window division of anderson. so we don't have to be high pressure you'll get an

10:31 am
within the cone were hurricane milton is expected to make landfall as a very powerful storm. they're anticipating wins upwards of 125 miles an hour here and if you look behind me, this is a huge part of the concern. this is what governor ron desantis has been talking about since hurricane helene swept through this area, a couple of weeks ago, there are piles and piles of trash them there's debris that could very easily become dangerous a barbecue, you have what appears to be a dishwasher. there are pieces of glass buckets, plastic, shreds of would. there are people's personal keepsakes. i found this photo on the ground just a moment ago. there were children's toys all of this very quickly becomes dangerous and a death trap for folks that are on this ireland, which has essentially one way in and one way out. and when you pair this with about 15 feet of storm surge plus a foot a foot, nearly a foot of rainfall on top of that with
10:32 am
nowhere for the water to go. it is an extremely dangerous situation and we're seeing scenes much like this all around the west coast of florida. actually want to go live to paul murphy, who's an anna-maria island for us, and paula, you are hearing from a local official who said to you that it seems like hurricane milton because of all this trash was already here >> we're seeing what looks like hurricane milton damage. >> it's not this is all from hurricane helene. the storm surge here, the police chief bill tokyo juror told me he if the police chief and homes beach, he said they measured it at 400 feet on the main road just behind my photojournalist, john general these were seeing that same scenes that you're seeing in treasure island. there are piles and piles of trash all around this island and talking with tik tok choke adjourn. he is saying they're not going to be able to clean up everything. this is going some of this is going to come up and it's going to be projectile and what is not going to be a projectile that surge is going to take it over anna maria island and push it
10:33 am
further into manatee county. now, over here you are seeing what residents and businesses are leaving they're they've tried to board up as much as they can in a short amount of time that they've had but they have gone from a recovery to preparation mode so quick, it is a head-spin and you're just seeing as we've gone through anna maria island, there's another truck just laden with trash. these are it is a 24/7 operation the chief to kajak told us that they're going to try and do as much as they can until tomorrow. and he had a message is the same message we're hearing for people from leaders across the state. if you stay, they cannot get you. they were able to do some water rescues and helene that will not happen with milton once the winds, which are forecasted to start here at tropical storm force gusts. once they start tomorrow that around 8:00 am he expects that by noon. they're not going to be able they're going to have to evacuate the island themselves so starting
10:34 am
at noon tomorrow, if you're here, there will not be helped coming for you you are on your own and he's made that very clear. it's that same message we're hearing from it from officials. write your name, right. you are a number, right? someone else's number, your date of birth on you because when they come looking for you, they want to no. who to contact because you decided to stay >> paul, that is a somber message that we are hearing from folks. paul murphy live for us on anna maria island. we appreciate the update. there is a tragic irony to seeing people's personal snl belongings now, potentially becoming a bigger part of the problem compounded by yet another huge storm that's headed this way when hurricane helene, the outer bands of it swept through here it was a category four, were expecting that hurricane milton will pack a similar punch as it gets closer to the coast and makes landfall.
10:35 am
>> and the enormous problem for folks here on treasure island is that it's surrounded by water. >> so if you go past that home right there, there's a bay and the water is already seeming at a pretty high level once the rain starts coming down, once you get the storm surge and the when there is no doubt that this area is going to get flooded, the other issue here is that when you go the other direction, this is a very thin strip of land just over there is the actual beach. and obviously the waves are going to creep in. folks in this area. many, many of them have already left. i've spoken to some folks that seem hesitant to leave. they should be aware at this point because officials have repeated it that the cutoff for treasure island is 7:00 p.m. tonight. and i do want to leave you with one quick note. there is something tragic. again about people's personal belongings coming up and being part of what potentially becomes dangerous about this hurricane there's a child's keepsakes, other there is a child's keepsakes here, scattered in the trash. a kid
10:36 am
named angel, who apparently when the principals honorable a few years ago, there were photos of him and his mother what i assume is his mother and his family. and it's tragic to see that this enormous pile will soon be into neighborhoods. it'll be into people's homes, and it'll make this storm even more dangerous than it already is. well, of course, keep monitoring the situation and we'll bring you the very latest as we get it from here. preserve ireland, and across the coast of florida as we take a live look at images from a drone of what the scene looks like. stay with cnn, we'll be right back and as questions like, what does a comedy show doing on cnn slice that by got news for you saturday at nine on cnn. if you're a veteran, i wonder home, they need money for your family called new day usa to

news out of the middle east. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says his military has quote eliminated the successor to the late hezbollah leader hassan nasrallah. and this is coming israel's fight with hezbollah only appears to be intensifying israel says more than 100 rockets were fired at haifa, which is in the north of israel, during a one-hour barrage today that's an attack that happened, is israel is expanding its ground incursion into southern lebanon and stepping up its renewed assault in northern gaza. in the meantime, us officials are telling cnn that the biden administration is no longer pushing to revive a ceasefire deal between israel and hezbollah. they say it's instead focused on trying to shape and limit israeli operations in lebanon and against iran, rather than halting hostilities outright. let's talk about this now. with cnn military analyst and retired army lieutenant general mark hertling general first
10:42 am
off, what is the effect of taking out nasrallah successor after taking him out? >> well, the killing of the successor a line of succession, the israelis did not know that that was part of a strike that. they conducted last week until just a few days ago when they when they found out that safi out, al-din was also killed in a strike but when you see the amount of leaders ship that israel has killed in lebanon, it just shows how they're trying to make the has hezbollah operation dysfunctional and to eliminate and to decapitate the leadership change. they feel is one way to complement their kinetic strikes against ground targets and the amount of missiles that are coming from northern lebanon. it's a sporting move, brianna, but whenever you can eliminate the leadership of an organization, it helps in causing chaos in
10:43 am
your enemies so we do have some new video in that has been reported about which is video of israeli forces hoisting a flag there on a, above a village in southern lebanon. >> and israel is also expanding its operations into southwestern lebanon sending the first reserve division of the idf to operate there. what does that signal to you? >> if first of all, they are pushing more forces into southern lebanon. i've been on in that area a couple of years ago. brianna, it is the high ground. there is great observation into northern israel from that location inside of lebanon that what that is what makes the rocket launchers because in the missile, missiles fired from that area and even the anti-tank direct fire missiles from those areas become so effective against the citizens of northern israel. so putting that flag up there as you just saw in that film, is an indicator that hey, from
10:44 am
israel, hey, we've taken the high ground. they can no longer absorb our actions. we have eliminated did the enemy from this space. but as you reported just a minute ago, there's still firing hundreds of rockets at haifa, which is less than 100 kilometers from that border. so there is still action by the hezbollah forces and now they're claiming they want a peace fire of peace peace fire operation, but they're asking the lebanese government to do that for them at the same time, they continue to fire these rockets and missiles. they fired 200 of them yesterday. they fired 100 of them just this morning. >> so what does that mean when you have the a top hezbollah official publicly endorsing ceasefire efforts? by lebanon's president. does that does israel look at that and say that there you know, escalate to de-escalate strategy may be working. how do you see it? >> no, i don't think so. and let me restate ceasefire. i'm sorry, i was stumbling over those words before.
10:45 am
>> if you kind of made sense yeah, it does. >> but the interesting piece is the u.s. government saying they're no longer going to push israel for a ceasefire in this area that they know that they have to conduct operations it's because they had been harassed by fire from southern lebanon for so long and you know, frankly, i think president biden has determined he can't talk netanyahu out of this action. it is an opportunity for them to squash the hezbollah operation after they've done the same thing to hamas, the enemy on their borders and i also think we certainly still have to be concerned with what israel may do to iran, what they have also started to do to the houthis in yemen, and what they might even do to some of the forces of that are representing the proxy forces refereeing iran inside of syria. it is now basic please five or six front war, which is just going to continue the way it is for awhile. >> all right, general. thank

>> we just got an update on the status of hurricane milton from federal officials in it appears the storm is now strengthening only two miles an hour from category five wins. it remains a very strong category four hurricane barreling toward the west coast of florida, want to take you live to the weather center to break down this latest alert from officials with cnn's elisa raffa alyssa, walk us through the details of this update. >> it is showing us that it is still keeping its intensity. i mean, when you're talking about 155 miles per hour, like you mentioned, you're splitting hairs at that point, you are at a high-end category four low-end category five takes 157 for it to be a category five. so kind of like that saying, you know, half a dozen or six, you know, you're kind of splitting hairs at that point when you look at the satellite, you can see that this ai has really opened up its incredibly symmetrical classic. it's getting a little
10:52 am
bit of that looked like it had yesterday. so this is why we were expecting the intensity to pick up a little bit. it's still has the possibility of teetering you know, getting to that category five strength. but again, it's basically there were two miles per hour away when you're talking about 150 mile per hour hurricane you know, what's two miles per hour, right. so just incredible to see it keeping its intensity in these very warm ocean waters in the gulf of mexico that we know traps more heat because of climate change. when you look at the track, we haven't gotten too many updates here. we're still expecting it to kind of teeter in the intensity more, it starts to get into some dry air in some of that wind energy, but still looking at a major hurricane, even a weakening storm firm 155 miles per hour is going to be an incredibly strong and destructive one that we continue to watch for florida. boris elisa raffa live from the weather center. >> thank you so much for that brianna, obviously, this is a
10:53 am
community that's been weathered by hurricane helene just about two weeks ago and now it is staring at the massive power of hers again, milton, we're going to be hearing from local officials as well as residents in the area a little bit later this afternoon. so we definitely want you to stay tuned for that. but if you are listening and if you are within the cone of impact from hurricane milton and you're planning to stay. you have to question the wisdom of that decision right now, brianna yeah. >> boris, it is staggering looking at the debris behind you, what they've already dealt with, and it's going to cause a lot of difficulty ahead, right? i mean, that's what so many officials are worried about. >> no yeah, absolutely. they've they've put out the word that at a certain point there's only so much emergency services can do so if you find yourself in the middle of the storm stranded in need of a rescue team they're simply not going to be there so if you have the opportunity to get out to go to a place that's outside the cone, to go to a safer location. now is the time to do
10:54 am
just that you don't have to go far, but you do have to go soon boris, thanks for that. >> and as if tiktok didn't have enough legal problems, the company is now facing a lawsuit filed by 14 attorneys general across the u.s. there are accusing the app of harming the mental health of young people and addicting them to their platform. the suits take issue with tiktok over things like endless scrolling challenge videos that encouraged risky behavior, so-called beauty filters that distort appearances and late night the push notifications cnn's clare duffy is with us now. clare tiktok has already trying to fend off an outright ban by the federal government. now they're facing this. >> yeah, brianna, they are facing legal pressure from lots of size. they are fighting against that potential us ban. they're fighting a lawsuit recently filed by the u.s. department of justice over children's privacy he alleged children's privacy violations, as well as other state actions related to children's privacy. and many of these claims
10:55 am
includes similar allegations that we're seeing from these attorneys general today taking issue with things like you said that endlessly scrolling feed where they say teens just keep scrolling to see what the next video is going to be or these tim tiktok challenge videos, these viral trends were teens will try to replicate videos created by others and sometimes engaged in dangerous behavior like riding on the outside of the subway. that's called subway surfing. and brianna, we know that there was one teen who died earlier this year from subway surfing and this lawsuit claims that his mother found videos promoting this don't on his tiktok feeds. so lots of issues with various parts of the company's business here, tiktok, of course, is pushing back on these claims a statement from a spokesperson today said that the company strongly disagrees with these claims, many of which we believe to be inaccurate and misleading. we are proud of and remain deeply committed to the work we've done to protect teens and we will continue to update and improve our product. and some of those features. it's rolled out include things like a screen time limit and
10:56 am
parental oversight tools. but these attorneys general say those things are not enough, brianna, they may be facing some financial penalties if the suit succeed yes, they are seeking financial penalties here, including requiring tiktok to potentially pay back revenue at earned from ads shown to teenagers they're also seeking to have tiktok changed some of its business practices here. and in fact, in new york, the governor actually recently signed a law that would require tiktok to make changes like only showing content in chronological order. but if these lawsuits are successful, we could see those measures carried out across a number of states. >> alright, clare duffy, thank you for that report ahead on cnn news central, we have the latest on hurricane milton millions of floridians are in its path and official schools are pleading with people in the evacuation zone to heed their warnings to leave while they still can. we'll have the new forecast will also have new video from a hurricane hunter after a quick break
