2:01 am
florida slamming into siesta key just south of tampa last night as a category three storm the roof of tropicana field, home to the tampa bay rays baseball team destroyed by milton's high wins, the stadium had just been converted into a massive shelter for first responders in town to help restore power? no reports of injuries from the stadium storm surge. now, a major concern for parts of the gulf coast >> 50 miles south of where milton made landfall, getting up to ten feet of storm surge according to a storm tracker on the ground there, more than 3 million customers are now without power across the state. >> the storm's outer bands spawning a tornado outbreak causing multiple deaths in st. lucie county, 135 if miles away from where milton made landfall
2:02 am
our deputies reported at least visually seeing six tornados on the ground ripping through our county, their northern direction. >> i'm leaving hundreds of homes devastated, completely totaled and unfortunately struck retirement community that it was mainly modular homes where we did have loss of life all right. >> here with us now for continuing team coverage of hurricane milton here on cnn, we have randi kaye in sarasota, florida and meteorologist derek van dam in atlanta. but we're going to start with storm chaser brand and clement, he joins us live from st. petersburg, florida at brandon you have been in the thick of this storm. and as i understand it you were the one who found video, who shot video of what happened at tropicana field brandon, tell us what we're looking at right now and what you we've seen through the night yes. >> so it's as tropicana field, of course this for the race
2:03 am
play. and st. p, the roof was ripped off by the hurricane and it was being used as a shelter for first responders. so what you're looking at is the roof completely shredded? i say maybe about ten to 15% of the roof is even left out there. and of course, its badly damaged as well. but of course you're looking down as the field, you're seeing the field and a bunch of cards as well as the debris from the roof fell down to the field i did not hear of any injuries, but i do know that they had to activate all the first responders out of the building. of course it's not exactly a suitable shelter at this point, but yeah, it's a really big big thing, right? when you drive into st. pete, you mean you see it? lights are still on. they even have a light shows going on inside the changing colors. so it's reflecting off the white roof. somebody you see it from a ways away and it's definitely a scar left by hurricane milton brendan, i walk us through kind
2:04 am
of where you were on through the night. what you've been able to see on the ground, there as you approach this and i'm also interested clearly they thought that this was going to be a safe place for first responders. to shelter. >> how did they make this miscalculation you know, i that's that's really beyond my pay grade. >> there i don't really trust large roofs. first, stadiums, we saw what the superdome, which is a more substantial roof, but typically when you're looking at a possibility of a major hurricane coming in, i'm looking for still concrete reinforced buildings and parking decks and stuff like that. but you know, when when that that type of wind comes in, it's really unpredictable. what can happen? so i don't know what it was, right for it and all that good stuff, but definitely feel like this tactic they she when that entire roof comes off so walk us through. >> i mean, you're absolutely
2:05 am
right. it's it's it's very remarkable. so what else have you seen on the ground or through the storm? i know that the storm surge that was actually reverse storm surge in tampa bay overnight. of course, as the storm hit just just south of tampa bay so jonathan petro mala and myself for all over the state, we were in central florida and polk county of los of the tornadoes were ongoing. and then made our way out to the coast south of sarasota, venice area, saw storm surge down there. >> luckily, we didn't see any of the storms surge that was projected unison double-digit totals mostly what we saw was probably in that 78 foot range, which is still devastating, still floodwater homes, but it's not that catastrophic type storm surge. now, whether or not that happened on barrier islands, i think rapidly till daylight to see and you see what took place up there? he's hurricanes have many different impacts. so you saw the severe weather in the 22 aspects and the central and eastern part of
2:06 am
the state and then we saw the storm surge south of the landfall area where you have the onshore flow. he has a negative surge north of the area. >> we hit the offshore flow and of course you had the high winds. he had flash flooding, storm surge damage from both land. and when we saw some buildings that were damaged from wind and solar purge and of course the flash flooding aspect, we saw far stalled and businesses, homes flooded from that. so it's a big mess all the way around. it definitely impact date with all aspects all right. >> brandon clement for us this morning. brandon, thanks very much for joining us. glad that you are safe. incredible video to see what's happened to tropicana field. thanks very much. >> all right let's head now to randi kaye in sarasota, florida. >> randi. good morning to you. how are things there right now? what have you seen there overnight this storm coverage since 7:00 a.m. yesterday morning. >> so we have seen the ups and downs of this hurricane
2:07 am
throughout the last the, 24 hours or so we have seen the light rains came through early and then we were here for the heavy winds that heavy rains, the eye passed over us it's and everything got very tranquil. the birds came out, the frogs came out and then everything got bad again when we were on the backside of the eye and then the heavy winds pushing through again. so right now, we seem to be i hate to say it, but in a very calm state, it seems like we are we are through it, but i can tell you there for some evidence of what we went through here, for example, is a piece of a fan blade that was on a fan up above a porch, up above us that came down you can see this fence. this is the fence between the house that we're in and our neighbor. 33 huge pieces of offense came down during these high winds. this peace was wobbling for quite some time, but it did stay it remains standing. but what we don't know the real mystery is
2:08 am
what downtown sara so it looks like because we know that we're only about 20 minutes from siesta key and that's where hurricane milton just made landfall nearby there. and so that's one of the barrier islands. and if the storm surge, which was predicted of nine to 13 feet came over those barrier islands, then pushed into sarasota bay and possibly pushed into downtown sarasota as they were expecting that storm surge which to do, been there could be flooding there. we have had some reports of flash flooding. we have major power outages here. most of the counties in the dark. so hopefully cases you see people did evacuate the heeded the warnings after what they saw happen with hurricane helene. and once daylight comes, we will know what the reality is indeed, we will our randi kaye, thank you. >> you for all of your incredible coverage throughout this. we really appreciate the update the latest update from the national hurricane center just issued moments ago. >> let's get to our meteorologist, derek van dam with the very latest on hurricane milton derek, what did we learn? >> yeah, kasie. so we're
2:09 am
seeing that the a.i of hurricane milton is moving off the space coast. third is a little spin right there. national hurricane center talked about that in the 5:00 a.m. update. but there are still some immediate threats to the east coast of florida particularly across the treasure coast. you can see right now, daytona beach winds, gusting to 83 miles per hour. and on this radar, all you have to do is really just follow the rain bands to see the direction of that wind and because it's coming off shore, because the eye is moving off the eastern coastline of florida. this is where we're getting that onshore component and that is going to push up water from the atlantic. and therefore, national hurricane center has continued the storm surge warning for the treasure coast all the way past the florida georgia border. this is where we have three to five feet of storm surge potential. and we've lowered the numbers here in tampa bay. we saw the reversal reverse storm surge because of the placement of the i just south and siesta key. but there is still some
2:10 am
elevated surge values across extreme southwestern portions of the state. this storm dumped a lot of rain. in fact, you can clearly see it on this radar, estimated rainfall total tampa, orlando, we're talking about two to three months it's of rain fell from the sky and it's not done yet in some locations we still have flash flood warnings for a few different areas included this region here, orlando daytona beach. we're talking about over a million-and-a-half people under a flash flood warning as it stands, st. petersburg got a foot and a half of rain just incredible amounts of precipitation from the system as it continues to pull away, there are 100 and seven mile per hour wind gusts that were reported. some portions of the west coast, but the good news is that this system is going to exit very quickly, but we still have the immediate threats here right along the trail. fisher coast of florida. tornado threats cannot be diminished just yet, we still have the potential for
2:11 am
spin-ups here going forward, kasie. >> all right. derek van dam for us this morning, derek, i'm sure we'll be back with you throughout the next couple of hours. thank you very much for that. and coming up here on cnn this morning, our special coverage of hurricane milton continues including this, a dangerous moment in st. petersburg, florida as a crane collapses into a building amid devastating winds from this storm. in just a few hours, governor ron desantis and fema administrators that are deanne criswell, hold a press conference to give us an update on the damage they with us black people better or worse, a lot of people came away from that debut. >> and it's my turn to talk. i must say tv on the end moments that shaped our culture. sunday at nine on cnn all

without power across florida. let's go live to tampa, florida, bringing archie collins. he's the president and ceo of tampa electric. mr. collins, thank you very much for joining us this morning. just give us an update at the scale of the damage here and what you all are facing at this hour well, good morning, kasie, and thanks for having me on we clearly it's first light here this morning. >> we're trying to take stock of what we're dealing with, but what we do know, it certainly is that we have an unprecedented number of our customers who were without power at last count. i see it's around 590,000 of our 845,000 customers. lots of what we're being told were not able to travel well on the roads yet we're what we're being told is many roads are blocked, impassable with trees down. some of our electoral infrastructure down unfortunately, and it's going to be a busy day to day truss trying to prioritize safety and
2:17 am
open things up here in our community in a situation like this, understanding of what your infrastructure is, what is job one, once you are able to get out on the roads job one this morning is really it's really about public safety supporting the search and rescue teams that are out and about trying to navigate the streets and confirm that everybody has come through come through the storm. okay? >> and really, you know, and then beginning damage assessment really getting out too. and laying eyes on all of our transmission lines are substations and working out from there too shy to assess how many customers can we restore as quickly as we can with the resources that we've brought into the state to assist with this sir how does this compare to previous disasters that you've worked on in this role
2:18 am
we were we were certainly grateful that milton made landfall just to our south, which meant we didn't we didn't experience or we don't believe we have experienced this significant storm surge that we did experience in the bay during helene that said the eyewall did travel right across hillsborough county and that is a game changer. >> these were the strongest wins that we believe have been experienced in hillsborough county in as long as anyone can remember the damage out there, i think is going to be significantly more than our customers have experienced in their lifetimes and for me and you know, in my 34, 34 year career, this was certainly the biggest hurricane that i've had to deal with personally remarkable. so what can folks out there, what do you have to say to them in terms of what they should expect over the next 24, 48 hours, how long
2:19 am
should they be prepared to be >> the show the i think the first message i'd want to give to everyone is no one. >> nobody needs to be going outside today to try to you know, sort of do inspections of anything, just let first responders and let teco power crews do their job that, you know, there are so many hazards out outside right now that we would just ask residents to shelter shelter in place it's too early to determine exactly how long it will take to get the bulk of our customers back. >> our customers should we are so committed to what we do? we recognize the important of power to our community to the economy for this, for this restoration, we have brought in over 6,000 utility workers that is almost double the resources
2:20 am
that we have ever brought in for a previous hurricane. so we are well staffed with the resources that we require, but it is going to take some patients from our customers. but i want our customers to know we are committed to working 24/7 to get as many customers as we can restore it as quickly as possible. >> and we won't stop until every customer has been restored. alright archie collins, the president and ceo of tampa electric. you've got so much in front of you. thank you very much for taking some time with us this morning. i really appreciate it thank you. all right. our breaking news coverage of hurricane milton continues after the break as this major storm causes more than two dozen tornadoes, including this one, senior florida's east coast the st. lucie sheriff county sheriff says that multiple people have died

2:26 am
or so we've been seeing the flashes of greenish blue blue lights in the sky, which typically means that a transformer has blown. so that number likely will continue to increase. but i'll give you a look of just here. this is the buenavista lake point of vista area here in orlando. were right in this hotel zone near the disney parks. so you see some tree branches down nothing major on this road. it's also good that we haven't seen a lot of traffic here as well. speaking to traffic and cars getting back on the road, the orlando police there fire rescue orange county sheriff's office as well. they are now back on the roads, are responding to calls. they were off the roads when the winds were at there throng this tour few hours overnight, orange county, he says that they have received dozens of calls about flooding trees down, at least one call about a roof that collapsed here in orange

counties. so there'll be heading out to that as well. there was a lot of preparation for the storm though expecting if there would be the flooding, like what we saw with ian two years ago with lake davis overflowing and a lot of the creeks and basins and retention ponds that are all over this part of florida the city opened up thousands of parking spaces in the city owned garages, so people could put their cars there to get away from the rising water and falling trees more than 3,500 people took advantage of that. but it's not until the sun comes up. there will get the first look for ourselves at just how bad the damage is. but we know that the authorities, local first responders, are heading out now to respond to some of those calls they got over night all right. >> victor blackwell for us will be with you throughout the next couple of hours. thank you very much for being there for us. our breaking news coverage, tracking hurricane milton just hours into the major storms march across florida tropicana fields roof. this is the home

2:33 am
everyone. i'm kasie hunt. it's wonderful to have you with us breaking this morning. hurricane milton unleashing on florida officials eagerly awaiting daylight to see what milton has done to their state. the storm making landfall as a category three hurricane on florida's gulf coast last night. millions now without power as damaging winds and severe rain pummeled the state. the powerful storm dumping more than 18 inches of rain on st. petersburg or more than one in 1,000 year rainfall in that area? and ripping the roof off of the tampa bay rays baseball stadium in punta gorda, florida, a storm surge flooding the city, storm chaser, aaron jayjack standing in the downtown area as water poured in above sea level the surge is probably about seven, right
2:34 am
water dozens of tornadoes also touching down in the state, including along the state's at atlantic coast in st. lucie county, the sheriff says a tornado outbreak has caused multiple deaths let's go live now to sarasota, florida with jamie carson, the director of communications for sarasota county jamie, thank you very much for being with us. >> this morning. i just want to start simply with your message to residents here as daylight approaches. >> kasie, you were talking about how vital that daylight is. we want our community to know that our tactical first in teams are out there in the community right now, assessing our major arteries our roadways, our major infrastructure we're asking our community to please stay put. we know that there are dangerous. we know they're down power lines what were
2:35 am
300,000 of our community members are without power right now so if you're in our community, if you're in sarasota county and you're waking up, stay where you are know that sarasota county, our first responders our local law enforcement, the florida florida army national guard, were out there. we're checking on things and we're going to give you the green light for right now for your safety craftsman it please stay put were you at all taken by surprise in terms of where this hit? >> because clearly, sarasota seems to have been at the center of all of this as it hit a little bit farther south of tampa bay than was initially expected. >> sarasota county >> so we have plans >> i think we may be losing jamie carson there. jamie carson was the director of communications is the director of communications for sarasota

county. and of course, you were just looking at live pictures of sarasota, the flooding there pretty remarkable and actually she may be back with us now. jamie, can you hear us on getting jamie carson back. instead, we're gonna go to our isabel rosales, who we find in tampa, florida, where she weathered the storm overnight, is about what are you seeing there? >> i mean, to me know hey, guys trying to get some light here. hello. okay. so we're at the holiday inn here in plant city off the vie for that has come right with me right here taken on a couple of feet of water, just gets deeper and that direction. so i'm here with the hillsborough county sheriff's office. they're responding to this call of people that have been trapped inside of the hotel. we can see they're amphibious vehicle right here. and some of the people that
2:37 am
they have just gotten out of this hotel and they're going to bring them to dry land. come with me this way was i'm here is the hotel full of water here on the first floor? there are still some customer and staff members here awaiting their turn. to get out of here, but the damage from the floodwaters is extensive and let me tell you, i lived in the tampa bay area for many years. >> this is extremely unusual to see this sort of water inland in plant city on the eastern part of hillsborough county. >> this is something i have never seen. this is something some of the folks that i spoke with here i have never seen they were taken by nice surprise once the water started rushing into the hotel and suddenly they found themselves trapped. so hcl is working a lot of these water rescues as we speak, we know that they suspended services, just pass 11 last night because the conditions were too dangerous while now it's a full flurry of activity to get people in dicey situations like this back into safety and i've got the sheriff right here. sheriff, is
2:38 am
it okay to talk with you chad chronister of hillsborough county sheriff's office. sheriff. what? what can you tell us about what's happening with these rescue operation? >> yeah, were three of them fabius vehicles are staged throughout the county and they're in full operation at assisted living for saudi up on the north end here at the hotel, you have some elderly folks that struggle was some them to some dry land, get them some medical attention these are people who didn't heed the warning this is these are individuals and areas where we've never seen flooding, never seen flooding and the you go from no flooding. the three feet away? water up over your knees? >> i can imagine how frightening it was for everybody here. yeah and specifically the assisted living facility, another separate operation happening right now in the northern part of the county that's where the university of south tampa, another place you would never imagine to see flooding like this. >> that's a more complex situation because you have people dealing with medical complications. what can you tell me about what's happening there? >> yeah. that's it takes a little more retreat judge.
2:39 am
>> certainly have to handle a fragile situation with the utmost care karen, a lot more care. we have almost 100 residents up their net, certainly going to be a more prolonged rescue operation. >> any message you want to give too folks out there that there, are stuck stuck and were blind-sided. again, in these areas that they've never seen conditions like this before. >> just hang tight, shelter. i know you're uncomfortable almost 600,000 people in our county without power will come to you as quick as we can and any idea how many of these calls you have right now, right now, these are the two big facilities. we have but another rehabilitative facility, we have a hotel here and then up on the north end. but again, out east and up north, we've never experienced this type of flooding, so i'm sure short was quite frightening for these folks who thought they were they were safe, they were sheltering in place and now faced with having flooding and not knowing what was going to stop again, you can see the relief. my my hardest certainly full of content knowing that

2:47 am
are here behind me at some point. this morning is at different points. they look like they're about to snap. that's how strong these winds are. the real concern now is this a flash flooding because of the rainfall, the multiple days in a row that this area has experienced rain, it hasn't stopped yet, still coming down. there is a flash flood warning in this area. i did talk with the emergency management division. they tell me that the first responders here, they're really waiting until the sun comes up to assess the damage of this area. so right now, it's just a sit and wait and see what happens. but we have seen some trees come and go. we've seen what appear to be electrical outlets, a transformer first blow, you see the power is still here behind me downtown, right now, obviously not the case for some 3 million plus customers of this point, kasie alright brian abel, for us this morning in orlando, brian, thank you very much for that report. stay safe out there.
2:48 am
>> let's now go live to punta gorda, florida, where we find charlotte county sheriff bill primal. >> i sheriff. thank you so much for being with us this morning. we of course, have seen we've been looking at some of the video, a storm chaser who was in punta gorda which is in charlotte county, and the damage there, the flooding levels pretty astonishing. what do you know at this hour about how bad things are there assess the situation. >> i have one of my helicopters up right now, basically find the whole coast of the county the city of point of gorda tends to go underwater during a heavy rainstorm. so we knew that was going to be flooded and it took on a tremendous amount of water when helene came through so we knew that was going to be one of our areas of concentration. but also my understanding from reports back from my deputies is that our west county area, englewood took it pretty hard that we have a lot of flooding out there. and our barrier islands and the beach down there have all taken on a lot of flooding we've seen a lot of
2:49 am
buildings that have been damaged, but overall the surge wasn't as great as it was predicted to be. so i'm very happy on that. >> grateful indeed. so, sir, what is your message to folks at this hour, especially in those areas that are a little bit farther west, do you have more people there who perhaps expected to be able to safely shelter in place? >> well, it appears that a lot of our residents did heed the warning and they left and went to shelters or left town altogether. but we do have several that we know of that stayed back our sar teams are starting to hit those areas. so we can see who's out there and who might need some assistance but what i want to put out to all the residents is please don't go out yet. it's still dark out there. we don't have an entire assessment of that the situation and the damage, so we don't need you to get in the way of our first responders
2:50 am
and we don't need you to put yourself in danger, so just stay put if you're if you're stuck in your house, we'll get to you sir, are isabel rosales was just talking a few moments ago with a hillsborough county sheriff and they had identified a couple of spots where they had a number of people, a hotel and assisted living facility. >> are there any places in your county at this hour where you're aware that you have to do a higher number of rescues down on the minnesota key area, we were told that several residents did stay back. >> so we're not really sure the exact number. i also know on our barrier islands, we had a handful of people that elected to stay out there so those are some of the areas we're going to be concentrating on. and then of course, within the city of punta gorda, that is underwater like it normally is. so we're going to be going door to door in those areas. >> sir how did the recent hit from helene affect your planning for this one? and how
2:51 am
do you think it's affected? what's happened from the storm? because obviously this is really a one-two punch yeah. >> now, i don't know if helene was a blessing or not, but when helene came through, helene flooded some areas that we have never seen flooding before. it actually we had more than 2000 homes that received major damage or destroyed during helene so we knew those areas that were affected by helene. we're going to be at least two twofold affected by milton so we have, we planned accordingly and also based on the surge protections we had our maps all laid out so we knew where we were going to send our sgt teams and what our plan of attack was. we also know that that has to be a fluid plan. so as our air unit reports back to us as to what areas were hardest hit, we may have to adjust and go in there first all right. >> charlotte county sheriff bill per ml. i know you have a long few days here ahead of you. we wish our best to you
2:52 am
and to those that you are working to protect. thank you very much for your time this morning. >> let's go now to cnn's, of course, victor blackwell, who is on the ground in orlando. >> victor. good morning to you once again what is the latest where you are in orlando as this storm starts to move across florida yeah. >> i mean, right now, we've got just very light wind and rain. i can't promise that's what it's going to look like by the end of this live shot because that's how quickly that combination of the wind and rain changes here we just checked in with power outages that number continuing to grow now nearing 90,000 here in orange county several tens of thousands and osceola county where kissimmee is straight south of us and our hotel where we are and we're in a hotel zone here right near disney. there's an interesting combination of the people who have come here. you've got some
2:53 am
people who are we're hoping to evacuate before the storm. i spoke with a family friend and the uk, that they came here to the parks. but unfortunately, because if milton, they shut down the parks or early wednesday afternoon and then you have people who've evacuated to this hotel, the lights are starting to come on in the room combs as they wake up, they can't use the television's here at last, check the signal was out, but they're going to try to go through social media and check back on their homes and their businesses on the southwest coast. we are waiting for an update from the orange county and orlando authorities there back on the rows. now, as you can see at this moment, the winds have calmed down to their responding to some of those calls. likely there'll be checking the greenwood neighborhood first, which is likely to win. there's a lot of rain to flood we've got an update from the orlando international airport on rainfall here. they've had about four and a third inches
2:54 am
of rain since this started with more than three and a quarter yesterday, which is a single day record. for that meter there at the airport. still two to three inches of rain to come today. so they could get close to that record on the second day of milton's impact here. so again, as you're probably hearing from our correspondents all over this part of florida and certainly on the southwest portion that they're waiting for the sun to come up there, waiting to get that first look for themselves at some of the damage we're certainly doing that here in central florida as well. >> as of course, we've heard from a number of local officials this morning that they're seeing more damage in the western portions of their counties in places that normally wouldn't necessarily have expected this kind of flooding as of course this for st. petersburg who was once in a thousand-year rain event, even though the storm surge was not as bad as it may have been
2:55 am
predicted, victor blackwell very grateful to have you. we'll check in with you again shortly straight ahead here on cnn this morning, our coverage of hurricane milton continues including destruction in tampa after the city was slammed with wind gusts up to 100 miles an hour we are expecting a press conference from officials in tampa in the next hour, we're going to bring you that live pizza everyday. >> unlimited topics. >> but does the budget even exist for that, ethan? >> why are we not talking about the fact that my opponent has coatings remarkable unexpected moments of inspiration around every corner. and through every window quiet mornings in the sun with four-dose to new world and fine dining with yeah your
