lot, there's pieces of there as well. so it's just scattered all the way around. >> a lot of his hanging up in the rafters so in the beans or this for beings, for the roof. >> so it's, it's a just everywhere you look. >> and i understand after you shot this, you then turn south here you're south of sarasota now assessing the damage, there. what are you seeing now? what do you see along the way? >> currently in inglewood. unfortunately, the police have blocked off the road back to englewood beach and there is a temporary flight restriction up, so i can't fly the drone and show what it looks like out there i'm hearing is it's really bad, but i can't provide i want to not seeing any rescue crews go in or any resources you go in. so i don't know what the situation is. there but i am an inglewood and some of the homes that were flooded, you can see in the live shot to have up a lot of debris spread around. these were debris piles left from helene in the same house is
5:01 am
were flooded again last night, when milton came ashore all right. >> brandon climate more glad you are safe. thank you so much for providing these dramatic images. we are getting new information just in a brand new hour of cnn, new central starts now standing by for the first live update of the day from florida's governor ron desantis and the director of fema, which will offer first assessment of what kind of damage hurricane milton brought when it slammed into the state? >> hey, does the sun is coming up now? first responders and are able to get a clear look at the scope of the damage crews on the west coast of florida are conducting water rescues to get people to safety on the east coast of the states, search and rescue teams are sifting through tornado debris. and this just in from the east coast of florida, officials in st. lucie county say at least four people have been killed, four people dead at least after
5:02 am
several tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down. i spoke last hour with the sheriff there who said an entire mobile home park, your entire mobile home community was just flattened. let's go to victor blackwell. he's standing by in orlando this morning and victor, there is a lot of moving parts here as we're starting to get an assessment from areas, parts of the state of what people are dealing with today >> the big headline right now, those water rescues that are happening right now to get people to safety. of course, we've also have that headline of the power outages more than 3 million customers out. i just went not too far from here in the last hour. i've had it and i walked out on for 35 and 535 and i saw that there was a 711 with metal. i tweeted out the photograph and centered in that some wind damage there with metal panels kind of strewn around there. sheriff's officers deputies who are blocking down branches and large branch is not the whole tree here in the lake think
5:03 am
we're in the vista area. we also just saw some video from the orange county fire department. the fire department and fire rescue showing the video of that attempted water rescue about for 40 am here in orange county where the water was up to their chest. they were going into this mobile home community trying to rescue people but those people decided that they wanted to stay so they stayed in their homes. we're going to see more of the reports of localized flooding around orange county because that really is the story for the center part of the state. as it relates to the power outages. we're closing in on 100,000 here in orange county, which is really not a majority of the county serviced. next door in lake county. and in polk county in each of those counties, more than half of the customers are without power. you go west to provide county there's easter prefer county, i should say there's a report of a tornado, one of three
5:04 am
dozen tornadoes along the eastern coast of florida. that's in cocoa beach still waiting for today's from the police. there on the damage caused by that, but yes, as the sun is now up and people are seeing what's around them. and the first responders able to get out with the winds down and the sunup to give him a look, we're going to start to get the full scope of the damage of hurricane milton overnight thank you. >> thank you so much for that. let's go now to clear to st. petersburg rather that's where boris sanchez is standing by. and we've been watching these video coming in from clearwater, which is very close to where you are of water rescues >> kate, extensive water rescues not only in hillsborough county, but in pinellas counties, as we understand it, were here in st. petersburg, just outside tropicana field which sustained enormous damage. the roof of it please. in tatters, i can
5:05 am
report that the neighborhood around it, though, has not seen extensive flooding. so things at least here in the immediate area quite. as bad, but again, it's unclear the extent of the damage from hurricane milton right now. we we're trying to access part of pinellas county that was shut down sheriff's deputies blocking off a bridge. we talked to them about why they explained that the sheriff had actually gotten to some down power lines and had seen that there was a lot of damage in a certain area that was flooded and that is part of the concern that's why these areas are shut down the in seeing dangerous whether it's power lines in water or power lines underneath rubble, or branches that might be teetering on the verge of falling we're seeing as you noted, kate, water rescues right now, especially in eastern hillsborough county. this is very agricultural part a very agricultural part of florida. we have migrant workers there. we understand that a senior citizens facility had to be evacuated. they're looking at two to three feet of
5:06 am
flooding in some parts officials in both pinellas county and hillsborough county are urging folks to stay indoors, especially if they see storm damage because right now there is so much going on that they do not want folks to interfere and they do not want folks to put themselves in danger with these rescue operations and with serving further widespread damage of hurricane milton kaye and boris, that's a little bit of what we've been hearing from officials this morning from an official in venice, florida from official in naples, florida, all along the west coast of florida saying they are really getting out there now oh, to get an assessment of the damage that has brought a lot of it on the west coast, as we know, is is from the waters from just being dumped with rayne. >> i think we didn't they say i think it was clearwater st. pete like a foot and a half came down yeah yeah,
5:07 am
absolutely. >> it's something that we had to deal with all night in tampa, the pounding rain tampa got roughly four to six months worth of rain in about a day and you can imagine that for officials trying to get to folks that might be calling for help, that in itself is a challenge on top of that, you have a storm surge that was coming in and further of the wind that knocked over a ton of debris and there was debris leftover from hurricane helene that also created obstacles for officials. as we were getting to this area. now from tampa we saw widespread flooding. fortunately, most of it did not seem to be going into homes that we saw. but of course, these are the areas that we can access right now. not what officials have shut off so if they can get to people that need help yeah. very long day still ahead and we're also standing by to hear from the governor and the head of fema to get kind of give us a bigger overview of what, what the states now facing as milton finally heads away, boris,
5:08 am
thank you so much. really appreciate reporting john, just want be to editorial from some of those pictures you're seeing there. we're seeing water rescues in clearwater, florida some editorial just came in high water has trapped as many as 18 people in one clearwater apartment complex. now, i don't know if that's the one you're looking at right there. alright, these are live pictures right now from clearwater. obviously water rescues in there, the water pretty high. i mean, up to the windshield of that car, so hard for people to get out of that building. certainly the boat is pulled up right in to the building. again, live pictures from clearwater. we do know that that 18 people have been trapped in an apartment building. i don't know if it is the apartment building. you're looking at right there. in the meantime, let's get to isabel rosales, who is in hillsborough county, is well, what are you tell us where you are and what you're seeing? >> john, good morning to you. yeah. we just got here to river view, the southern part of hillsborough county. and i'm going to show you something in
5:09 am
impressive and it's, causing a lot of issues to this community that i'm in right now. so this is a drainage system right here, this water that's ponding off they had so much win. but most importantly, so much rainfall yesterday that it actually broke apart the sediment and look at this created this enormous sinkhole. look at that wow, i can't even tell how deep that is just all the way across this road that i'm told by a deputy hillsborough county deputy is the only way into this community so you can see folks just looking around in all of this. they've been coming up taking pictures. the deputy tells me that they're essentially stuck here they're forced to go around the neighborhood into the backyards of these houses if they want to get around because this is the only way in and out of this community. so clearly, a bad situation for these people. now, earlier today, i was in plant city, that's in the eastern part of hillsborough
5:10 am
county where i was riding along with the hillsborough county sheriff's office and the sheriff chad chronister, as they got to a hotel, the holiday inn, where guests suddenly found themselves overnight, unexpectedly in floodwaters unable to get out something that is not typical of that area of plant city, something that they've never seen before. i spoke to the manager of that holiday and listen just with the hurricane in the water, it just kept rising and i'm i've been here 14 years i've never seen a motional probably know. i always tried to treat this like it's my so, hard sorry howard the customers
5:11 am
here ebon. good. i've had a couple of that word kind of upset, but they at the end of it, they're like they know that there's nothing i can do. it is major so we just had to hold together and make sure everybody was safe and i got most of the guests that were on the first floor to a higher floor. so that everybody was safe. and then i had the couple that stayed here with my mom and i said that we wouldn't down here by ourselves interview, one of the guests there who had mobility issues, a couple actually elizabeth and jack gibbs, they were loaded onto hcs shows amphibious vehicle and taken out of their in two dry land. >> so great rescue there. and of course we did here over on the tampa side for mayor jane castor that the flooding danger is not over here in the past hour, we entered high tide, so she's saying that that will lead to more flooding from the
5:12 am
rivers all over tampa and hillsborough county nice all right. >> elizabeth isabel rosales at that sinkhole right there. i know you've been up all night going from location to location, just seeing some of the damages of the floods aren't enough. the sinkholes now posing a threat as well, and you've just reported also just editorially, there are live rescues happening right now and an assisted living facility in hillsborough county as well, isabel rosales. thank you so much for that. we'll come back to you. stay safe. let's get to meteorologist derek van dam. derek sort of the twin threats we're seeing right now on the west coast of florida, it's the flooding water rescues happening right now on the east coast this is just immense amount of tornado activity yes. >> so right now we've got this 8:00 a.m. update from the national hurricane center and milton is looking like a former shell of himself, right? it is sheared, it is destroyed in many regards, and it's point away from the space coast rather quickly. but of course, the threats still remain and will try and highlight those as best we can. you can see
5:13 am
hurricane warnings remain along the space coast stretching as far north as the northern portions of the atlantic florida coastline. in fact, that we are getting gusts to 58 miles per hour right now in daytona beach. so that is still dangerous conditions as the outer rain bands of the backside of milton continued to wrap in from the atlantic coastline. this produced a prolific amount of rain, right here specifically, you can see it on this radar estimate that's where over ten inches of rain has fallen and we heard from isabel, it's great reporting about the water rescues that are taking place in hillsborough. hillsborough county and then into the clearwater area right now, clearwater beach soft 14 inches st petersburg, 18 inches. there was nine inches of that rain and st. petersburg that fell in a three hour period. so you can imagine just how much ponding and flooding that cause. so here it is the eye of the storm still pulling away from the space coast. but it's wrapping in that rainfall. so there are still active flashflood warnings in place in and around
5:14 am
daytona beach and would that onshore push three to five feet? storm surge still an issue for our coastal communities before this system said and done and pulls completely away. these are the record or rather the storm surge totals the highest totals that we saw venice beach, just a little over five feet fort myers, 5.2 who? seven feet and into naples, roughly, just over five feet. and of course that's not as high as what ian brought in 2022, but still a significant amount of surge that will obviously leaf some homes and businesses with water damage this morning wind gusts over 100 miles per hour, right where the storm made landfall. again, just near siesta key and this was knocked down over 3 million customers across the state of florida without power right now. and we know that these approaching hurricanes are prolific tornado makers. >> while this was just one example of one of the tornadoes that dropped from the sky. >> and this is on the east coast of florida. so this is coming out of the palm beach
5:15 am
county region and that is a significant destructive tornado. you can see it lighting up the sky, breaking down transformers this is incredible. john, there were an the record number of tornado warnings that were issued in one day's time across the state of florida yesterday. that was just one of them. you can and see the others from previous hurricanes as well. >> looking was just one after the other, after the other yesterday afternoon and well into the evening. derek van dam. thank you very much. and again, looking at these at these live pictures and he's just water rescues people, driving down the streets in boats. derek van dam. thank you and you can see and you can see how high that water rate you could see was reaching the top of those cars there and our cop the bridge of hurricane milton continues. >> we are standing by to get an update from florida's governor as well as the fema administrator the first update that will get from them and since hurricane milton finally started moving offshore, as there's now with first light, dealing with this we'll be right back

that's why mark farrell is endorsing prop d. because we need to tackle our drug and homelessness crisis just like mark did as our interim mayor. mark farrell endorsing prop d, to bring the changes we need for the city we love. and asked questions like, what does a comedy show doing on cnn that's too much i want donald. >> now, can you slice that i got news for you saturday at nine on cnn all right. breaking news, we are just now getting reports of fatalities in st. lucie county that is in the eastern part of the state with us now is th yesterday is tornadoes that rolled through are county crews
5:21 am
still out today doing additional damage assessment and rescue and recovery in some neighborhoods that we had at least two confirmed tornadoes touched down yesterday between four and 6:00 there have been reports, as many as a dozen tornadoes, but we'll need to wait for confirmation on the national weather service on that. and the next day or two. but we know within about a two-hour period, we had over 900 calls to our emergency operation center or regarding the tornado activity that was happening the fatalities for now recorded, did they come from one specific place or were they spread out i don't have any details. >> i do know at least more than one were from one neighborhood, but we're still getting all those details as we speak. >> kate was my colleague, kate baldwin speaking to the sheriff you said that there was a mobile home park that was flattened. do you have information on that yeah. we
5:22 am
had crews in there last night after the tornadoes rolled through, we had a window until about 10:30, 11:00 will go for we knew the tropics, four storm winds were going to come in from the gulf so we had crews in there getting those residents that may have been displaced into temporary shelter, those that needed medical assistance, and getting them to hospital facilities. and there were some fatalities in that neighborhood? yes. >> what are you hearing this morning now that the crews are out again or you still getting calls, are people trapped not that i've heard this morning, but again we've only been it had daylight now for about an hour-and-a-half or so, but cruise crews have been out the main focus is getting the roads cleared in getting power restored and getting those that need shelter into shelter we did have two general population shelter setup as earlier in the week that we're overwhelmed before the 20 was impacted our area.
5:23 am
>> but we know that shelters are placed a last resort you're supposed to run from the water and hide from the wind, but went with these tornadoes. sometimes you don't have a lot of warning. >> you really don't. and that's the thing with this tornado. there were days of warning particularly about the storm surge and the west coast in particular, was on high alert, but much of the peninsula had been told there could be damaged. i mean, how ready? he where you for this be with with tornadoes. >> you don't get that warning with hurricanes we can track and make predictions on storm surge and wind speeds, but we've seen some severe 20 just out of summer thunderstorms they can spin about a nowhere and from palm beach county all the way up in any river county that happened yesterday in what is the most important thing for residents to know this morning? >> what do you want people in st. lucie county to be doing?
5:24 am
>> statehood if you can. does now's not the time to go out and sightsee there'll be plenty of video and photo available for people to look on social media. right now, we need to make sure that we're getting the roads clear. we are getting the power restored and helping residents get back to normal all right. >> eric gill, obviously communications spokesman for st. lucie county, confirming for deaths. there. we are sorry for your loss and we know it will be a very busy day for you. thank you so much for your time, sir. >> thank you kate and john, you guys may make a great point with eric gill. >> there as you can you track a hurricane for days and days. you can't track when a tornado is going to pop up and that just happened. what happened to all those people in st. lucie must have been terrifying last night. just terrifying. >> we're also looking here. these are live pictures from clearwater, florida, live water rescues happening there. as many as 18 people trapped in an apartment building due to this severe flooding. our live coverage of hurricane milton

small businesses everyone. let's get let's get back to our live coverage of hurricane milton. and all of the damage that occurred. hurricane has broad we have live water rescues that have been happening this morning and continue at this hour. you see this? isn't clearwater. this is in clearwater, florida. this is on the west coast of florida and that is where we find on the west coast of florida, boris sanchez, who's standing by, whom you mean you you you lived through it and reporting on it all throughout the day and night for us, boris and behind you is some of the evidence of just how strong
5:30 am
hurricane milton milton was and the wins that it brought yeah, absolutely. >> some fearsome winds coming into florida's gulf coast. kate, this is tropicana field is one of the centers of the community here in st. petersburg. and as you can see behind me the roof is in tatters. it's been completely shorn by the win and that's notable in part because this is one of the basis of emergency operations in response to hurricane milton, you had emergency personnel sheltering there. you had resources gathered there and you can see how impactful this hurricane was something you may also be able to see behind me, is that there is a pretty decent amount of traffic for this hour, especially after storm we were able to look in the immediate neighborhood of tropicana park and it seemed as though at least in the immediate area there wasn't much flooding, there wasn't much damage to structures, so right now, it looks like the roof got the worst of it at tropicana part.
5:31 am
but obviously this is one area of st. petersburg, doesn't highlight what's happening across pinellas county and neighboring hillsborough county as well. we tried to access an area of pinellas county earlier today that's been shut off the sheriff's deputies had closed the bridge leading into an area where we understand that there had been some downed power lines extensive flooding as well. we know that santa is let's go let's go and jump over now to governor ron desantis is giving his first live update of the day. my administrator deanne criswell, florida state guard director mark theme, me. and major general john haas from the florida national guard around 8:30 last night, milton hurricane milton made landfall near siesta key in sarasota county. it moved quickly across central florida overnight producing significant if it can flooding and damaging winds near its path. the storm did bring much destruction and damage. tornadoes ravaged parts of the east coast of the state. flooding occurred on the west
5:32 am
and east coast and strong winds lashed the state, especially in pinellas, hillsborough, manatee, and sarasota counties over the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall totals upwards of ten to 15 inches has been observed across much of the tampa bay area in nature coast and spreading eastward along north of i4 corridor towards sanford inches of rainfall. were observed in pinellas and coastal hillsborough county's five to ten inches of rainfall has been observed further northward towards gainesville along eastern portions of the i4 corridor and south of the western i4 corridor towards sarasota several rivers reached major flood stage and major flooding continues along portions of the hillsborough river, st. johns river, and little wakulla river water levels are forecast to continue rising along northeast and west-central florida rivers and waterways with many forecasts to remain within or reach moderate to flood stage over the next day or so we had over
5:33 am
80,000 people that were into shelters over night as the storm hit the state we will better understand the extent of the damage as the day progresses. and you have people that are out there assessing damage right now, first responders have been working all through the night hi to help people who were in distress. and what we can say is the storm was significant, but thankfully this was not the worst-case scenario. the storm did weaken before landfall and the storm surge, as initially reported, has not been as significant overall as what was observed for hurricane helene, right now, it looks like sarasota county had the most significant storm surge likely somewhere between eight to ten feet. and remember with helene, we had 15 to 20 feet up in taylor county rescue missions have been underway throughout the night stage search and rescue teams, reportedly 48
5:34 am
individuals have been rescued as of 0630 national guard search and rescue teams have worked overnight and successfully executed rescues of families and pets on the west coast. and from the destruction of the tornadoes in east, in the central and eastern parts of florida, the guard continues to work into the morning and have 31 rescue aircraft operational and hundreds of rescuers engaged in over 125 active missions in 26 different counties. over 6,500 soldiers are deployed throughout the state florida fish and wildlife commission has made land and water rescues and pinellas, hillsborough, and pasco county of the state guard has also been engaged in search and rescue, assisting with floodwater evacuations, as well as damage assessments. there are currently 3.1 million accounts without power our there have been 635,000 restorations since hurricane milton hit florida. the areas that have the most significant
5:35 am
outages as of this morning or hillsborough 75% out party, 97% out manatee, 82% out pinellas, 68 percent out, and sarasota, 75% out. of course, there are 50,000 plus linemen that have been pre-staged a lot of what they'll do this morning is likely assess the damage and then began restoration operations very quickly. and we appreciate everybody that's in that fight because that's very important for a lot of people. cut and toss have begun at first light by the florida department of transportation, 328 cruise are active in the field with over 350 pieces of heavy equipment and trucks hundred and 50 bridge inspectors were dispatched. it first light and have begun performing inspections to open bridges across the impact areas as i put in my executive order residents have a right to be back into their homes as soon as the roadways are deemed safe
5:36 am
and tampa, the gandy bridge and howard franklin bridge have been inspected, cleared, and are open and inspections of the sunshine skyway bridge are under way there is debris on the sunshine skyway as well as the courtney campbell. but once that debris is clear, we anticipate those bridges opening later this morning. other bridges are being opened as soon as the state inspections are completed, the tampa airport is repairing minimal damage and should be open. no later than tomorrow. sea ports are waiting, coast guard channel surveys to reopen water side. but as of now, our initial assessments is they will likely be able to resume operations very he quickly. we still have a lot of school closures for today. i think floridians should just keep in contact with local officials about what that's going to be. i would imagine a lot of the schools that were not necessarily in the direct path of the storm will be open tomorrow. it may take a few more days for some of them
5:37 am
places that were harder hit. >> now, as you survey damage and clean up please be cautious of hazards. >> we have post-storm fatalities, almost every storm, and a lot of these fatalities are avoidable. so please be cautious of down power lines don't touch them, don't remove tree debris that may be entangled with downed power lines, standing water can conceal down power lines and other hazards. so please be mindful and never walk through storm waters standing storm waters can also carry a bacteria that can lead to fatal infections. this type of infection was responsible for a fatality following hurricane helene. so please avoid wading through standing water, please use proper ladder safety please use proper generator safety. do not operate the generator inside your home. it must be outside a safe distance from

days. but i think everybody responded very quickly, proud of everybody's hard work. we've got more work to do, but we will we will absolutely get through this. okay. kevin guthrie governor. >> thank you for your leadership time and time again i know you in the state emergency response team will lead the charge as we respond to recover for from the storm hurricane milton officially made landfall. as you heard the governor say, the impacts from the storm are still being felt across north and east central florida, even right now, is that last banding train of rain starts to move off shore please, especially if you're in the areas if you're in those areas of northeast florida, the east race coast space coast. please make sure you're sheltering in place until official determinant is safe for you to leave in the first 72 hours after a storm, there was a parallel effort to search secure, and stabilize the area.
5:42 am
as search and rescue missions continue in response to milton, please do not go out and visit the impacted areas you will be inhibiting first responders by doing so. right now, we need those roadways clear for electrical crews fire crews, ems crews, urban search and rescue crews. we have 20 something urban search and rescue teams that will move into the area and do a door-by-door search, even though as you heard, the governor say this was not the worst-case scenario we still had damage and we're going to need to get out there and go door-to-door and make sure that everyone is ok. so please stay off the road. listen to your local authorities for updates on when it is safe to go outside. and when did it safe for you to return to your homes? i know a lot of people evacuated and we appreciate that do not be in a hurry check in with your local emergency management agency or local sheriff's offices to see if there are posting anything on if it's safe to return home. please make sure you do that. again as the governor said, we're going to open up roads
5:43 am
and bridges so that you can do so. but there may be extenuating circumstances in the neighborhood level. so please make sure you're checking before you come back home. major flooding continues along the hillsborough st. john's and little uocava rivers. want to take just a moment and just talk about there is going to be another phase to this particular incident. and that is very similar to hurricane ian. we have a lot of rain that has fallen over the central portion of florida. the st. johns river basin that comes down into seminole county portions of bravar, portions of volusia county, and on up the st. johns river. those headwaters have experienced a lot of rainfall that river takes about 45 days to completely flush itself out to the the atlantic ocean. so what we're gonna be seeing versus impacts down in the seminole county and surrounding county area and then you'll see that move up into malacca. we laka and then on up into st. john's flagler clay duvall
5:44 am
counties. so that's going to be a long-term effort. when it comes to making sure that people are monitoring the situation on the st. johns river as well as the ones that i've mentioned hillsborough and the little lacava some roadways are flooded, which is not a safe situation for anyone, please do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwaters accidents due to floodwaters are 100% preventable. all you gotta do is turn around if you sheltered in place or when you return to your home and you're looking at the damages around your home right now? do one thing for us. take out your phone, take some pictures inside and outside. all four sides of the house every room inside the house. what are things that you should be documenting? make sure you're documenting just the physical damages, but then also since this was a flooding event, we want to make sure that you capture those, what we call high watermarks on your home do that inside and outside for a point of reference when you're on the outside of the
5:45 am
home, make sure you get the door knob of the outdoor house. that'll give us a reference, a pointer reference on how high that water got if you're on the inside, make sure you have like an electrical socket or a light switch or again, a door handle? on the inside of your home in the picture so that we can get some type of reference as to how high that water is coming up process, please ensure you're wearing the appropriate safety year. do not attempt to clean up hazardous debris or down power lines as a governor has said, report, all of that to your local authorities. do not cut any lines again, we do not need florida man in florida woman out there cutting random lines as they go, you don't know what is a cable line. you don't know what it was electrical line and probably more importantly these days is you don't know what is a fiber optic line? most of our 911 lines run across fiber optic we do not want anybody cutting lines. let the professionals come in here and identify what it is before it's cut remember, again, some roads are
5:46 am
still dangerous due to flooding debris, and potential down lines do not risk it. let our crews get out there and get everything back up and running for assistance after the storm caused state assistance information line again, that's information only when 8034 to three by 57 help is available in english, spanish, and haitian creole florida disaster.org slash updates for information on the web and then of course, follows on at, i'm sorry follow us at fll sert on x and instagram and facebook at fdem. that is the most trusted and fastest source that we have. we have several people helping us out on posting on social media. so that is going to be the best place in the fastest place to get stuff from us. thank you, governor desantis, again, as together, we will overcome the storm and thank you, governor desantis and listening in right now to the first the update of
5:47 am
the day kind of as the storm has moved out into the atlantic. first update from governor ron desantis and he i think that the biggest headline and we can tick through them because it's important. he did say thankfully the worst-case scenario did not occur, know. and that's important for everyone to know, which is, which is lucky. >> it did not go up into tampa bay. you do not see storm surge of 15 feet, but there is still very much a risk today and that was the other thrust of his news conference. rivers will still flood and rise in some cases, power lines are down all over the state. he is urging residents to listen to their local officials in many cases, stay at home today. so first responders can do their work. we do know there have been at least four fatalities recorded from the tornadoes on the east it's coast in that number may very well rise and power outages. power seems to be a real problem today and will continue. he had mentioned there's more than 3 million people still without power hillsborough county, hardy
5:48 am
county, manatee county, pinellas county, sarasota county. that's where most of the outages are centered and focus right now, but that's going to be, that's part of the long-term recovery is they need to get out there and the damage. he also didn't say if getting a full read on the extent of the damage. they don't have it yet know. and that's going to continue to them? >> no, we don't know just yet what we do know. is there a water rescues happening in the western part of the state in those flooded areas in the eastern part of the state, we are seeing damage from tornadoes are cameras are just reaching some of these sites. stay with us from springfield, ohio, where haitian immigrants face hate in this city. >> they've called home if all of the haitians here, we're gone. what do you think happens to springfield? >> the whole story with anderson cooper sunday at 8:00 on cnn, that box, there were

news for you are pretty odd about what are the kinds we could run on the news before then would never happen if i got news for you saturday at nine on cnn again, ap and stream next day on max got new video in just a short time ago of from orange county, florida. this is a central part of florida near orlando. crews out checking homes, checking in with people affected by the flooding and you can see there just working through the water, walking through the water, it's about waste deep as you can see right there this is the west, the central part of the state, and we just also heard a live update from the governor who was talking about sarasota saying that sarasota county actually was the portion of the state the part of the state that was hardest hit when it comes to storm surge, sarasota but county saw eight to ten feet of storm surge that they were dealing with, as he said
5:54 am
though, that was less than what was the worst-case scenario that was feared, which is very good news this morning, still, they've got a lot to deal with today, especially power outages. the governor saying that three quarters of sarasota county is without power this morning. let's go there, joining us right now is sandra tapfumaneyi, the sarasota county emergency management chief. chief. thank you so much for coming in. give me the latest of what you're most focused on. a concern about in sarasota county right now yeah. >> well, thanks so much for having us on so right now, we have crews out assessing and first responders are clearing the calls that we're on hold last night. we had roughly 300 calls, rescue calls from various different municipalities of people that while the storm was passing, that they couldn't get to you? so they're doing that. so one of our biggest concerns right now, we can't access litto key and longboat key because the little ringling bridge that gets you over to there has some
5:55 am
damage to it. so we're working on that to be able to get out to check on some of the folks that we know had stayed. we had about a couple of hundred at least that we knew for sure on longboat key so yes we are. i heard you talk about that storm surge as we are grateful that we didn't get that higher prediction, but we did still get somewhere between seven to eight feet, which is more than we got a hurricane helene just two weeks ago. so then a very active hurricane season here. this is the third hurricane we've had since august yeah exhausted from the hurricane season is probably a vast understatement for you guys chief, you mentioned the keys out there. have you been able to get you've met not been able to get there, but have you been able to get in, tom? i've been in contact with them to check and how people are doing no, we haven't actually really it's just residents that we know we're over that way who just didn't want to evacuate. >> so all of the municipal mountain municipalities and the longboat key team from the town evacuated to our eoc here, the
5:56 am
county eoc and we know we had a lot of vacuum we have to for litto. >> so now it's just trying to reach the residents that stayed out there. we have been able to access siesta key experienced a great deal of flooding with that surge, but it is starting to subside yes. >> real quick. would you say that sarasota counties in the clear at this point well, we've been asking for residents to just stay put for right now we know that we're we're clear in terms of experiencing any additional impacts from the hurricane, although we are going to monitor the myakka river for additional flooding later this week as the rain starts to make its way down through the waterflow to get back to the golf. >> but other than that, as far as storm surge and wind, we're clear, but now we've got a lot of trees down power lines down. it's still dangerous out there, so we're asking for residents just to stay put. we know a lot of people evacuated, which we appreciate, but we just need some time to clear everything. so that it's safe for them. the return? >> absolutely. thank you so much for joining us. good luck today. our live coverage continues of the aftermath of
