sometimes great challenge is right under your nose people were watching and then our world changed. >> tv on the edge sunday at nine on cnn to many projects and insane deadlines sink most renovation the project is three months passed the deadline, but this is when allison is that her bets? i love i'm just in windy city rehab, all knew tuesday night at 8:00 on hgtv rescues in florida as the totality of destruction from hurricane milton comes to light search the rescue missions underway after multiple tornadoes ripped through the state, four deaths have been confirmed with fears that that number could rise. and the candidates are back so on the trail. former president barak
6:02 am
obama joins vice president harris in pittsburgh. as reports emerge of new jitters from the democratic side sarah sidner is out today. i'm john berman with kate baldwin this is cnn new central and now search and rescue crews working to find people in the debris debris left behind by several confirmed tornadoes nose in florida at least four people have been confirmed to be killed, and that is what is happening on the eastern coast of florida, along the western coast of florida, where hurricane milton first made landfall, water rescues. >> we've been watching them happen all throughout the morning now, hurricane milton is heading off offshore, which also now means the work to fully assess the damage left behind is getting underway. officials are right now urging
6:03 am
people still to stay put and stay safe if they are safe, especially totally of course, they say they need people off the roads right now. so first responders can get out there clear roads and do these assessments to kind of get get a true view of the scope of what they're up against now, moments ago, florida's governor ron desantis gave this update we will better understand the extent of the damage as the day progresses and you have people that are out there assessing damage right now, first responders have been working all through the night to help people who were in distress and what we can say is the storm was significant, but thankfully this wasn't not the worst-case scenario let's get right to cnn's boris sanchez. >> he's in st. petersburg for us thankfully, not the worst-case scenario that is wonderful news to hear the predictions were so dire heading into this and also good news that people, many people we've been told by from official to official that they heeded the warnings and most
6:04 am
people got to got to safer ground. what's the latest from st. petersburg, boris >> kate, not the worst-case scenario, but an ugly scenario nevertheless, this is tropicana field. behind me, this is the home of the tampa bay rays. and as you can see, the roof of this baseball stadium was torn up. it is in tatters right now and that's significant in part because this was one of the base of emergency operations for the response two hurricane milton they had emergency personnel stationed there. they had resources there as well and now it is a wide open baseball park, immediate area around it appears to be okay. >> but that's not all of pinellas? >> county. we tried to access a part of the county that was cut off by sheriff's deputies earlier today. there was a bridge that was shut down. they essentially told us that they were concerned about down power lines in the area. and obviously we've not yet seen the barrier islands on the gulf coast. how well those are faring after the powerful storm
6:05 am
surge and the immense rainfall from hurricane milton keep in mind many of those islands were suffering after hurricane helene helene, and so officials are warning folks to stay indoors because there are so many unseen dangers that are possible. we heard governor ron desantis mentioned in the potential for downed power lines bacteria in standing water. and of course, the potential for there to be teetering debris that could come down from trees are from structures at any moment they want folks to stay inside as rescue operations are underway. as you pointed out, kate, a number of water rescues this morning including in hillsborough county that is just east of here. specifically, eastern hillsborough county, there was an assisted living facility that had to be evacuated due at a number of senior citizens that were there getting pulled out by law enforcement. there was two to three feet of standing water. this is an agricultural area. it's a bit more rural than you'll find here in st. petersburg. beyond that, it is still hard to get a full scope of the damage when
6:06 am
you hear that there are fatalities across the state in port st. lucie as a result of tornado damage not worst-case scenario, kate, but an ugly scenario for the state of florida. nevertheless, absolutely. >> and alice county, hillsborough county. so the counts are mentioning also the hardest it's hit in terms of power outages. that's still going to be a big, big problem for everyone today, boris. thank you so much. let's go now to fort myers, florida. that is where carlos suarez has been standing by for us, carlos what are you seeing that's not carlos there's carlos carlos what he is in the k to fort myers, florida this morning is waking up to some damage brought on by at least two tornadoes that we believe touchdown here in lee county. we are in a neighborhood just south of downtown fort myers where we spent all of yesterday and we saw some of the three to four feet of flooding there. this home here behind me, we believe is one of the homes in this neighborhood that was hit
6:07 am
by this tornado, the folks out here telling me that the wind yesterday really picked up at one point in the afternoon and that when they looked outside of their window, all they could see was but they thought was a tornado. you can see a good part of this roof is gone. it's a little bit difficult to make to see inside the actual house, but we did see someone walking in earlier today. you can see some of the debris that covers the front yard of this house here. this belongs to some sort of business, so it's not even from this area. and then if we go across it's a street. i'll show you a one other house here because the guy that owns this house, he was on the roof just a few minutes ago, taking a look at the damage to his house, he said, look, we put up all this plywood yesterday, all in an effort to try to protect our house and the water and the rain. all of that damaged by this tornado and so you can see what the folks out here are dealing with this morning. kate, i cannot hear you right now, so that's the situation from here. in fort myers. i
6:08 am
know we've been reporting all morning long about the impact of this hurricane outside of the gulf coast of florida, the west coast of florida, a particularly when we were talking about now these tornadoes. i mean, we had at least four that were confirmed. we know one out in the western part of broward county, another one up in clearest in which is right where lake okeechobee is. and then again, these two other tornadoes that the folks out here are pretty certain is what caused all of this damage. >> kate carlos. thank you very much, john. >> just for the record, i can hear you. fine. >> thank you very much as always, the mellifluous sounds of kafle that in my ear, right? so the very latest is that four people have been confirmed dead from the tornadoes. >> governor desantis suggested that number could rise as we get more information, cnn meteorologist derek van dam is with us now. derek, what are you learning? >> well, listen, i think it's something for people in south florida when they make a decision whether or not to
6:09 am
evacuate, especially when you're on the east coast of a gulf coast landing hurricane, whether or not it's something that you need to do. well, here is proof that you should, and the reason is that these landfalling hurricanes are prolific tornado producers even well in advance. and far away from where the landfall point will actually take place. and here's one such example usually these are brief spin up tornadoes. they cause minor damage, but sometimes very very rarely they'll create more significant damage where carlos was reporting from, for instance and this particular tornado that i just showed you a moment ago, which is on the eastern side of the state in palm beach county but this is incredible because this approaching hurricane actually forced the national weather service to issue 100 126 tornado warnings in a single day. that is a record for the number of tornado warnings set for the state of florida. and so we tie this together with landfalling hurricane haynes and we look back at the most tornado warnings ever issued by the national weather service in
6:10 am
the state of florida, 2017. guess what? that's irma 2024. that's helene from two weeks ago setting in at third place. fourth place, 2022, you guessed it. that's hurricane ian with 40 47 tornado reports. so really saying something that this storm created such a wide swath of tornadoes over the southern portions of the state and knocked out power along with a wind from the hurricane to over 3 million customers. that'll take days if not weeks, to reconnect it electricity and guess what, we're still experiencing tropical storm force winds along the space coast, a tone of beach gusting to over 50 miles per hour. there's a reason why we're also seeing these live swift-water and high-water rescues at the moment, john is because a two to three months worth of rain fell across the central part of the state. i mean, just follow that pink line right there from tampa to orlando it's slicing through the central parts of florida. that's where the most rain fell from the sky. and in fact, this was a one in 1,000 year event for st. petersburg where we had over three times the monthly average rainfall in
6:11 am
just three hours in total, they received over a foot and a half half of rain. so incredible to see there just expired flash flood warnings along the east coast. and there are still concerns about surge and the flow of the water moving out of the bays and inlets here along the he's coast? >> yeah. one of the things governor desantis said is that the water level on some of the rivers will continue to rise over the next few days. people need to be very, very careful. derek van dam. thank you so much for that. and we are getting new images in the very latest on these water rescues that are still taking place, stay with black people for better or worse lot of. >> people came away from that big you when it's my turn to talk, almost say tv on the edge, moments that shaped our culture sunday at nine on cnn that moment when you walk in the office and people are wearing the same year, you feel a sense of connectedness and belonging right away in our shirts from costuming help bring us together. we make it

live on tbs alright, let's get back to fort myers, florida. we've reconnected with the mayor there. mayor. thank you so much. apologize for the technical glitches these days. talk to me about what your biggest concern is right now for the city after you all lived through last night power back on getting businesses open making sure people have access to gas and food and there were tornadoes that were reported in for myers connected with you know, coming from hurricane milton. any injuries reported? >> none that have been made aware of no. reported deaths, no reported injuries at this time so thankful because it seems a very different story out in st. lucie county, the
6:23 am
governor, you'd mentioned the power outages. governor desantis gave an update and across the state, there's more than 3 million people without power fort myers is definitely, as you mentioned, you've got a power outage. power outage that you guys really need to figure out today how many people, how much of the city is without power and do you think you'll be able to get the power back on today or like how damage was it? >> we've have about 18,000 people without power we have not gotten a report back from florida power and light as to the extensiveness of the damage what was it like for you, for your team, for the residents? what did you all experience from hurricane milton >> the word of the day here is thankful because we expected this storm to be much worse than ian when it came to water.
6:24 am
but we're very thankful that it wasn't. we experienced a lot of wind, as we mentioned, the two tornadoes, we got some flooding along the river and the area. >> but again we're bouncing back. that's great to hear mayor. thank you very much for coming on, john. >> all right. i want to get right to cnn's isabel rosales, who i believe is that an assisted living center where it's a bit of a dynamic situation right now is isabel what are you seeing? >> go hey, john? yeah, good good morning to you, john. you saw the act of rescues over happening over in plant city. now, we have moved on to a different part of hillsborough county by the university of south florida and mike can just look at this and incredible amount of flooding. just from all the rainfall and a nearby lake over here i have never seen this by the university plaza area. and i used to live here for many years as we were
6:25 am
zooming in, you can see cars that are flooded out you can see he the police officers who have taped off a huge, huge section of this road. and i can also tell you that in that direction, john, there's an assisted living facility where hillsborough county sheriff's office tells me that they are conducting active rescue operations right now. they have over 100 people in there that are trapped and they need to get them out and you're talking about some people who need to use wheelchairs, some people who because they're so sick or elderly, you know, they're red, bedridden so complex medical issues where they need the help of hcl. so deputies to get them out of there. and how are they doing that? in floodwaters like this through amphibious vehicles. so sharp is what they call them this vehicle that's able to get into these floodwaters with deflate able tires and literally flipped in this and then come back onto dry land and the tires reinflaming to
6:26 am
get them out of there. so you are looking at just a stunning, impressive site here at the university plaza area of hillsborough county you can tell from the people over here on the left, if we can pan over this way, it's drawing crowds people who have never seen this, taking pictures coming out here, getting close to the water as hcl so is conducting activeperations right now, john is we're going to stay with you for a little bit because these are remarkable images that we are seeing now in hillsborough and this water that is there is this the rain are these rivers have overflowed how did it all get there? where can it go everything, the impressive amount of rainfall that was unrelentless overnight from milton, there's also a lake in that direction and retention ponds that filled up from all of that rainfall and then drew it out here and then there was
6:27 am
also high tide. >> we heard tampa mayor jane castor warning that we're not out of the woods yet when it comes to flooding the tide, swelling the rivers and causing flash flooding, causing flooding issues, period where it can be dangerous situation. and we're witnessing this right now. i know that they have been throughout the morning checking in deputies checking in on course to them, have been flooded out to make sure there's nobody in need give their health, but we know again, that assisted living facility over 100 people that do need their help right now. >> all right. at the other end of this water and assisted living facility, people need to be taken out of his will if he could have the camera pushing again, so we can take a look at some of these vehicles that are stuck there now, what we don't know is if they were there all along and the water just rose on park cars or as often happens during storms and after storms people go out and try to drive through things. but one thing i think that is clear as a bell right now and that looks
6:28 am
like what maybe happened here, because these cars aren't positioned in a way that it looks like the drivers had a choice there just again, describe how widespread this is and what you've seen among in regards to flooded vehicles windy right now what caught sheriff chad chronister by surprise as i was talking to him this month this morning was how many areas of hillsborough county his county that would normally never dream of seeing this flood people woke up and we're suddenly blind-sided by this flooding. that's what he told me. i don't believe that this is an area that we're normally experienced, something of this nature when i was over and plant city folks who are stuck at a holiday in over there. they told me they woke up and suddenly they were sloshing their feet on the ground floor there are of the hotel so they weren't
6:29 am
expecting that these were people who did everything, right? they were not in evacuation zone a or b. they were further inland, never anticipating the flooding to reach them and suddenly they have found themselves in this situation now, with these cars, i i'm with you, john don't know what led to the situation if suddenly they saw the waters rise and they didn't listen to that old, you know, saying of turn around, don't drown what happened here with these cars? i don't know. i'm supposed to meet with sheriff chad chronister here shortly he were anticipating doing the right along here as they're conducting these active rescue operations and hopefully getting more details as to how we got to this point here in the university area i didn't even see that sedan parked underneath that bank of america sign there. there's barely the roof of a car sticking out there. you can get a sense of just how deep the water is. isabel rosales, you and your team have been running all
6:30 am
around the state in the tampa bay area. thank you so much for your hard work. will let you get back to reporting there to link with the hillsborough county sheriff and tell us what you can about these rescues that are happening sort of on the other end of this water, you're seeing right there. so isabel, to you and your team, we appreciate it again, we are getting the very latest information new pictures that you just saw of these with kaitlan collins tonight at nine okay. >> everyone, our mission is to provide complete balanced nutrition or strike that energy ensure with 27 vitamins and minerals, nutrients for immune health and ensure complete with 30 grams of protein you founded your kayak company because you love the ocean not spreadsheets you need to hire. i need indeed indeed you do. are matching platform lets you spend less time searching and more time connecting with candidates visit indeed.com slash higher,

6:35 am
the very latest on the aftermath of hurricane milton and the destruction left behind joining us right now, is the fema administrator, deanne criswell well, thank you so much, administrator for coming on and you guys have a lot on your plate today. >> what is your assessment of how hurricane of hurricane milton's impact and damage in florida? >> yeah. kate, i've had an opportunity to talk with the governor today, as well as his team and then give the president an update on what we're seeing. and i think what we know for sure is we avoided that worst-case scenario that we were planning for. but the fact that they prepared for the worst really made sure that they were able to respond to the impacts that they that they have experienced. and the biggest ones right now are the tornadoes that have been reported across the state. i think the last number i had was 38 confirmed tornadoes. and the biggest storm surge was
6:36 am
certainly in a sarasota area, but not but as much as the catastrophic storm surge that they were predicting, but still a significant amount, they're out right now doing assessments, the status, and we've prepositioned resources to be able to come in and help the state with whatever they need. >> some of that prepositioning know when you say that some of the pre-positioning kind of just in general for first responders was at tropicana field. this the tampa bay rays, the home of the tampa bay rays. that's the stadium there and the roof was just ripped off as we saw that was one of the effects in st. petersburg, making it impossible for first responders and all who are going to stage there to do that. what do you do? what do you do with all of that now? and it did that impact staging and response? >> yeah. from what i understand from the state as that as a typical location that they do stage resources to support response but they also know what the wind level is that it's rated for. and when the
6:37 am
storm shifted and they saw the increased winds that were going to go over that they just move them to some of their other staging areas around the area for you no impact to the response here for the first responders. and i think the most important thing is they recognize that it was in that path that was going to exceed what it was rated four and they moved all of those responders to safety. yeah, i got them got them out of that danger. so what does it mean now? for fema and your recovery efforts when you're talking now as milton moves offshore, that you now are dealing with the aftermath and the impacts and destruction from two major hurricanes in two weeks now, if you had a moment to kind of take an assessment of what this is going to mean for fema resources in the long term. now that you see what milton has done the fact that the worst-case scenario was not realized lead here in florida, it means that
6:38 am
there's math doesn't mean that there's not going to be impacted and resources needed, not to the level that perhaps sweets wouldn't have needed. >> we've done multiple catastrophic events like this in the past. that's why we have a layered approach to our staffing and we plan for this. and so we had moved resources from some of our non-life-threatening open operations to be able to support what was going to potentially be needed here and milton. and now we're going to continue to work with the state to help me not just the hurricane helene response and recovery efforts, but now milton, we already had 1,000 people in the state supporting the lean as well as the other disasters ii and i daily that they had the previous year's. and so we'll see if we need to bring anything in addition to what we already had to support. now what they're seeing from milton and last time we spoke earlier in the week, we were talking about one of the things that fema has been forced to fight against is misinformation with regard to false rumors being spread and that had to do
6:39 am
with hurricane helene in the impacts of that it's early on, but are you do you are your teams are seeing that level of misinformation continued to spread with regard to any difference with the after with the impacts of hurricane milton, like what is what would you say is kind of the status report of your the battle you all have been needing to wage against this misinformation from hurricane helene we'd had such great support from governors and congressional members, local leaders, really helping to push back on that formation. and we did see a decrease even though there was still, some voices out there that we're still trying to spread these lies, which is really unfortunate and just a distraction to our ability to support the state and locals with what they're doing i have not had any reports yet of any increase in misinformation as a result from milton i. do have a
6:40 am
team that watches this closely and if we find that we need to get out there and be proactive in our messaging to help dispel these rumors will certainly do that fema administrator deanne criswell. >> thank you very much. good luck today and we'll far beyond when it comes to fema. thank you so much. >> john. yeah. >> i mean, she's in it for sure. sure. alright. this morning, both donald trump and vice president kamala harris back in the campaign trail, trump headed to michigan where the polls show the race, basically tie. harris goes to arizona and nevada just as tight in the polling there and. it. all comes as former president barak obama heads to pittsburgh as some internal jitters begin leaking out from some democrats seen as alayna treene in detroit, eva mckend is in washington. alayna, first to you, what are we going to see from trump today? >> well, john, we're going to see donald trump here in detroit and just a couple of hours. oh, excuse me. i'm getting a little feedback. he's going to be a couple of hours speaking to the detroit economic club at 1:00 p.m. now,
6:41 am
this visit comes as recent polling from quinnipiac university shows that the race in the blue wall state. that means here in michigan, but also pennsylvania wisconsin really tightening those polls are three of them actually from quinnipiac showed that snl actually harris says lead and pennsylvania has been trimmed. her donald trumps or excuse me, her lead and michigan has essentially been erased and was constant remains very close. now, we know that donald trump won these states in 2016. he lost them in 2020. and i know that the trump campaign is really making and all out push here in michigan, but also pennsylvania and wisconsin as we look ahead to november now for what he's going to talk about today when i talked to donald trump's advisers, they say a, that essentially it's really going to mirror that economic speech he delivered to the economic club of new york last month. that means talking about wanting to lower the corporate tax rate right? even further, wanting to slash
6:42 am
regulations. we also know he has vowed to set up a government efficiency agency that he said elon musk has agreed to lead all of those themes are expected to be talked about when he comes to the state shortly. now, another thing i just want to point out about the detroit economic club is that every single president going back to richard nixon, nixon has given a speech here with the exception i should say, of joe biden, though there is still time. we know that donald trump delivered a speech to the detroit economic club in the lead up to 2016, just before his win in the state. that's part of why he's coming here today as well. his team is calling it full circle moment, but again, i cannot emphasize enough the importance of michigan at, for the trump campaign as they look ahead to november, especially because when i talked to his advisers there's they really say out of all the blue wall states, this is the one they feel the most confident about and just one other thing i want to talk about is that yesterday, donald trump was in pennsylvania, another blue while state and we did hear him continue to escalate his attacks on the
6:43 am
biden administration, but specifically kamala harris, with regard to the federal response to her i mean, milton, but also to the most recent hurricane hurricane helene, he continued to really peddle false claims that the biden administration is not doing enough to help these people. he argued falsely that helicopters were not going to rescue people on the roofs of their home. all of this as really the trump campaign is politicizing this federal response. and of course, we know that a lot of local officials on the ground are trying to do what they can to combat some of this misinformation john almost universally pushing back against that misinformation, alayna treene in detroit, eva mckend in washington. i might have had that reversed. i apologize for that eva barack obama headed to pittsburgh today. what's the plan there? >> so john, what we're seeing from democrats is a divide and conquer strategy with harris campaigning out west with a town hall in vegas, a rally in arizona. this evening and
6:44 am
democrats looking to former president barak obama really to boost the energy and engagement among the base in pittsburgh and what this tells us is the campaign pain is at this stage where they are deploying their most powerful surrogates obama typically sent into great effect in the closing weeks of democratic campaigns. what we're seeing from harris is her trying to recreate the multiracial coalition that helped president biden win in 2020. she's not quite there yet. it's important to keep in mind, john and a lot of places voting has already started. so obama and other surrogates, they can essentially encourage voters if they can to vote right away. in fact, last week when we were on the trail with the vice president in flint, michigan, she told voters not to wait if they received their absentee valid to go ahead and turn them in. john. >> yeah. i mean, that is something the obama campaigns in 08 and 12 really revolutionize getting people to go to events and vote. then not weighted. it's a way to
6:45 am
actually turn out the vote literally in the moment even mckend. thank you so much or thanks to alayna as well. and we are standing by as we are watching these water rescues in florida will bring you the very latest on cnn is to keep it from happening medical and pharmacy data with behavioral health data to identify members in need of care predicting and treating behavioral health issues quickly while lowering costs for planned sponsors and members that's wonder, made

6:54 am
