the election starts now early voting in georgia kicks off this morning and a few hours. the pivotal state is of course, a tossup in the latest wall street journal poll, kamala harris it's holding a slim 46 to 45 edge among registered voters. they're well within the margin of error. both campaigns, of course, also intensely focused on pennsylvania. that's swing state where 20% of all ad spending is, has been spent since july in dueling rallies last night, donald trump was in the philadelphia suburbs harris out west best in erie, pennsylvania. during her event, harris went after trump playing clips from his recent rallies and attacking his enemy from within. comments that he made recently about political opponents donald trump is increasingly unstable and unhinged that's what he's looking for. he wants to send the military

there appear to be some fusion about what was happening while trump was up there joining us now to talk about the state of the race. >> tia mitchell, washington correspondent for the atlanta journal-constitution. tia, good morning to you. >> the morning. >> so early voting kicks off in georgia. but of course president trump with the impromptu dance party last night as kamala harris really kind of leveled up her attacks against him at an event out in western pennsylvania. what is the state of the race here as voters in georgia can head to the polls starting today. >> well, it's super close in georgia, which i mean, all the candidates are pretty much cycling through once a week donald trump will be in georgia today, both to tape a town hall for cable, but also to hold a big rally to mark the first day of early voting kamala harris is expected in georgia this weekend. many other surrogates throughout the day, throughout the week. so it just shows the importance of georgia among others they're swing states. and i think it shows that the state, like many other swing states, remains too close to
2:05 am
call tia. >> what are your sources telling you about the way this dynamic might play right now? because i will say when i talk to republicans, they feel pretty confident about georgia. they feel more confident about georgia than some of the other states. on the map. if you talk to harris supporters, many of them will reference even north carolina as potentially closer into her column than georgia is. do you agree with that assessment? what do you hear from your sources on the ground? yeah. i think georgia is going to be tough mainly because republicans usually win statewide in georgia. >> the only exceptions in recent history had been of course, president biden in 2020, and our two senators, ossoff and warnock. biden won in 2020 in part because he was on the ballot with us off and warnock and they combine to make a pretty powerful message about not just controlling the white house, but flipping the balance of power in the senate. the difference for kamala harris is she's running on a ticket pretty much by herself. there aren't really any other
2:06 am
high-profile statewide races in georgia on the ballot. so she doesn't have the benefit of that democratic ticket to help pull her or along, which is just going to make it harder for a democrat to win statewide in georgia. >> tia, one of the things we've seen harris do in recent days is tried to up her focus on winning over black especially men, right? so these kind of economic plans, she's been putting out there on small businesses, other things also seeing some of her media strategy, perhaps be designed to appeal to those folks. obviously, the black vote in georgia is incredibly critical for her. how important is that piece of it, of trying to convince more black men to vote for her in georgia? >> yeah, it's a critical piece, but it's just one piece. but i think democrats know that it's very hard to win, especially in close swing states, if your base isn't there to build upon and black voters are the backbone of the democratic party. you meet
2:07 am
black men to show up as well in a state like georgia, just a few percentage points difference in any key demographic could be the right race because we know a state like georgia is going to be really close. i think kamala harris is trying to boost those percentages, trying to nullify some of the criticism that she's hearing from black men. i would say latino men kind of fall in a similar category but the risk for her is that she is perceived as speaking who much just the black men in ways that are procedures alienating other key demographics that she also needs all right. >> tia mitchell for us this morning to thanks for getting us started. i really appreciate it. all right. coming up here on cnn this morning, striking lebanon, quote, without mercy, israel's full throated warning hezbollah plus fema back up and running in north carolina after they were forced to pause due to threats and a group democrats haven't won since 1990 six white women without college degrees. >> what strategists think

2:13 am
according to the red cross that death toll expected to rise as crews comb through the rubble in the meantime, israel is rejecting accusations that its troops deliberately targeted un peacekeepers in southern lebanon. netanyahu saying monday he repeatedly asked the group to get out of harm's way. >> the charge that israel deliberately attacked unifil personnel is completely false. it's exactly the opposite. israel repeatedly asked unifil to get out of harm's way. good repeatedly asked him to temporarily leave the combat zone, which is right next to israel's border with lebanon. in fact, on the day that is began its ground operation thanks to our border with lebanon we asked them specifically, please leave this area so you're not harm their says, israel weighs retaliation against iran, let's bring in max foster in london for more on all of this. >> max. good morning. always wonderful to see you. this, of course, back-and-forth coming
2:14 am
as the u.s. fast is sending additional missile defenses to the region. and the wall street journal is reporting this morning that israel has assured the biden administration they're not going to attack or irans nuclear or oil at targets that biden and netanyahu spoke wednesday, it was their first call in more than seven weeks after months of rising tensions between the two men. again, this is the journal, right? think the prime minister said he was planning to target military infrastructure in iran according to us official, us official. and an official familiar with the matter, the retaliatory action would be calibrated to avoid the perception of quote, political interference in the u.s elections and quote, they official familiar with the matter, said signaling that netanyahu is understanding the scope of the israeli strike has the potential to reshape the presidential race. and we are here three weeks out just remarkable the impact that that's having on how this is all playing out. >> yes. it's about escalation for the u.s. isn't taking it to a level where we get all out
2:15 am
war. so obviously the conversations about what, what is a reasonable level of retaliation for israel as the us sees it. so the debates around that, obviously we don't have any insight to exactly what the targets within iran might be, but it's pretty clear that israel was planning to go bigger. but because of the u.s. election and the sensitivities around that, then perhaps there is some sort of agreement there not to go for the most sensitive targets, which would be the nuclear facilities. and the oil facilities as well, because that would completely undermine the iranian economy and obviously sparked a bigger retaliation from iran in return yeah, max, of course the other angle here, we don't want to lose sight of is, of course, the hostages that are still being held in gaza one of the family of hersh, goldberg, polin who of course was killed. they were his parents were on
2:16 am
with anderson cooper last night talking about their own plight, but also the plight of other families like there's let's watch not seen world leaders emerge on a global stage all together and demand that the hostages be let go. >> i really naive once the news emerged, i have tobar ninth, tenth, 11th of 2023, and leave understood the magnitude i was certain that we were going to see a global demand for action and i'm still waiting for it the world failed us of course, max, those families are still waiting. do we have any signs that these talks are at all going to resume or that there is any hope for these people it's the same story that we've had all along you know, we get to a point where we're getting indications that there might be
2:17 am
some sort of deal. >> and then the post shift slightly on one side or the other. the latest we've really got is that hamas is rejecting some of the new proposals. they say it is too in favor of israel to the real sensitive points here. obviously the philadelphi corridor which israel appears wants to keep control of in the future. but also the rafah boarding crossing also, israel just saying it's not agreeing to a full ceasefire. obviously, israel's priority all along has been to get those hostages out. and to take down hamas. and we've got some developments actually today kasie, on the operation against hamas, the united nations suggesting that north gaza has effectively been sealed off altogether by these, by the israelis, the world food programme saying food is being blocked into northern gaza so the operation from the israeli side very much focused on northern gaza we don't have the

2:25 am
but over the eastern parts of the country that we're going to see these valid for tomorrow morning when the hardest parts of this freeze will actually settle in for some of the higher elevations along the appalachian mountains in fact, 60% of the lower 48, roughly 190 million people experiencing temperatures below 40 degrees. that is an incredible step because that's really not something we felt in quite some time were starting our morning at 42 in chicago, freezing mark in bismarck dc, 50 degrees this morning, but it will get cooler from here. and this was interesting to note, these temperatures, the average high for this time of year, feeling like the middle of november, with this daytime high of 57, expected in asheville, of course, a lot of recovery efforts still happening there with temperatures flirting with the freezing mark overnight. very similar type weather pattern across the eastern seaboard. temperatures below average, that's the main story of this weather forecast with cooler dominating the east fire risk over the west central interior. i'm going to leave you with this a once in a lifetime viewing opportunities still through october 26, this

hanging around here the last two or three days. you know what traveling out and going around and went to them? fair and everybody was in such a good humor. i even had one guy with a maga cap asked to take a picture thought maybe there's hope for this country. yeah in a new piece by cnn political analyst ron brownstein, he writes this quote in exit polls dating to 1980, the only democratic presidential nominee who carried even a. >> plurality of white women without a college degree on a national basis was bill clinton in 1996 and this voting bloc could be more important than ever in this election, brownstein writes this quote because these women are especially plentiful in the 34 blue wall states that still constitute harris is most likely path to an electoral college victory michigan, pennsylvania, and wisconsin, to win those states, harris doesn't have to win most of these women democrats almost
2:33 am
never do. but she does need to remain competitive with them of course, we have seen harris has an edge among likely female voters. recent polling shows harris leads trump by nine points among women the trump campaign is aware of it trying to fix it i'm aware of the gender gap. >> i see the polling and everybody else does i also think there's some evidence that we've made some progress in the last few weeks all right joining us now is ron brownstein runs so grateful to have you on the program you're talking about this particular slice of the of women, white women without a college degree and saying that these women are critical to the blue wall states explain a little bit more. and i did think was interesting to hear bill clinton say that as well, right? >> he's someone in a maga hat, said that that he wanted to take his picture with bill clinton. >> he was of course, in many ways, i guess a different kind of democrat, but it kind of shows you how times have changed since the 90s indeed,
2:34 am
we'll look these women are usually the most republican leaning slice of the female electorate, as you noted, on a national basis, bill clinton is the only democrat since it exit polls since 1980 to carry even a plurality of them they have moved in the opposite direction of college-educated women really in the 21st century as the college educated white women to become more democratic, these women have become more republican but democrats historically casey have run just a few points better among them in the industrial state battlegrounds, particularly michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, the three states that trump i'm knocked out of the blue wall in 2016 and they are a critical voting bloc in those, in those states. >> if i have new projections in the story analyzing census data, that if you look at eligible voters in those states, they are really they are a bigger group than college educated men, college-educated women. people of color, really,
2:35 am
they are the largest group other than the non-college white men. >> and those non-college white men, as you know, are the foundation of the trump coalition. so clearly harris is on track to do better among the college-educated white women in these states, most indications are that post-dobbs in 2022, she can do even better than biden did in 2020. she's trying to get back to where he was among the black women in these states. and that leaves, i think an oncology white women as the critical wildcard that's left in these razor-tight former blue wall states it's a fascinating way to think about it ron, i know you're also interested as well in harris's strategy more broadly probably and trying to appeal to men in addition to women. >> and she did this interview with charlemagne tha god, what what, you mean? >> well, i don't think for all me in the gardens happened yet
2:36 am
that was not today. but was wrong in martin, i think what you did yesterday, right? >> yeah. yeah. >> look women or man, i think the key kind of trade off for harris has been between reassurance and risk. they have focused a lot of their media and messaging on reassuring voters that she is ready to be president. and in particular that she's tough enough to keep them safe on crime. and the border, the price of that is is that in the last few weeks, their message about trump, the potential risks of a second trump term has really been sublimated when you look at that big flurry of podcasts and network and cable media interviews that she did. the univision town hall, the view. howard stern, there wasn't really a clear message about trump. it was more about i have lived your life. i understand your life. i know what to make your life better. i think we see her recalibrating that. i
2:37 am
think very urgently. last night, really striking the way she played the clips of trump talking about the enemy within and threatening to use the military against people he deems as his opponents inside the u.s on the role of martin interview yesterday and i'm sure on charlamagne tha god today, talking more explicitly again about the history of actions by trump that can be viewed as racist with the central park five, his comments about obama trump's retrospective job approval has been steadily rising the reached the high point in that nbc poll on sunday that was higher than at any point during his actual presidency. and i think the message of that is that voters are primarily looking at trump through the lens of what they don't like about biden, particularly inflation and the border and democrats, i think there are a wide variety of democrats who fear that the harris campaign has led the other elements of what electing trump would mean,
2:38 am
kind of recede too much. and i think you're going to see her beginning to emphasize that on many fronts between now and the finish, whether americans really want to go back as she puts it, to all of the other elements that come with electing trump, other than the i thought that eggs might be cheaper at the grocery store ron, what do you think has prompted this shift in strategy for them because i mean, i think when she took over at the top of the ticket, they wanted to make a break from the way biden had been painting this as kind of a dark potential future and instead embrace this kind of joy and the way she was presenting herself. >> is it just the polling? i mean, what do you think is driving it well, first of all, i mean, i think that, you most political professional say it was rational and appropriate for them to focus primarily on introducing her establishing her credentials, laying out more of her vision to the to the public. >> the problem is that that may be only able to take you so far, given that most americans,

particularly most americans across racial lines without a college degree, like the women that we are talking about. we're talking about a moment ago, think that the economy work better for them under trump than under biden. biden's had a lot of economic accomplishments but as we've talked about, inflation has clouded those four clips, those for most, for most people. so if you're simply going to be in a conventional who is, who is better for my bottom line? and that is very hard for harris to win that election. but when voters were actually living through the trump economy, that many now say is better than the biden economy. his approval rating never reached 50%. only president ever and gallup polling ever reach 50%. and the reason for that is as we were saying, it was a lie else that went along with the trump presidency, the division, the chaos the constant conflict and so as you see the trump retrospective job approval rise, i think that's the canary in the coal mine
2:40 am
that all of those elements of the trump i'm presidency that prevented people from endorsing and supporting him in the first place are fading in memory. and i think certainly there are many democrats who think that you simply have to remind more voters about what is fully entailed and look at those non-college white women we were talking about. they tend to think trump is better on security. they tend to think trump is better on the economy, but they are deeply worried about the division and the vehemence the way he is talking about immigrants that is the push and pull on those voters. and i think in many other voters, and that is something that harris i think is clearly signaled last night that she's going to try to activate more between now and the finish line a little bit like bob dole in 1996 wake up america really interesting. >> ron brownstein for us this morning, ron, so grateful to have you come back soon, three weeks ago all right. coming up here after the break with polls showing of course, the election is basically todd i had an

2:47 am
>> i'm interested to know where you think things stand in georgia as early they voting opens there in terms of, you have launched an effort to try to convince many of your fellow georgians that donald trump would be an unacceptable person to send back to the oval office. >> what are you hearing from your friends, from your neighbors, especially as we see these national polls tightening the way that suggests that trump is in position potentially to win this election, or at least is likely to his harris is yeah, no doubt this is going to be a close election. i think obviously we've all predicted that and i'm certain to see that come out. >> voter intensity in the urban areas is going to be strong. and in the rural areas, i think this is going to come down to the suburbs. and what type of intensity do they show up and vote where i'm sitting here today is about two miles as the crow flies, where donald trump is gonna be later today for his town hall there's a lot of attention being paid in look, i think what hi here is this whisper caucus of republicans,
2:48 am
lifelong republicans like myself, that are just sick and tired of making excuses for donald trump. if they decide to just simply make a point and not vote for donald i'll trump at the top of the ballot. then there's a high likelihood that donald trump probably wins if they end up showing up and voting for harris against the grain i think there's a strong chance that she wins in for me, that heartburn and feels like it's loud enough now that i think harris ends up winning this race. >> jeff, can i ask you just your evaluation of how harris is doing on the trail? we have seen her kind of shift tactics here. strategy in recent days where she is now taking on trump more aggressively, more directly. i mean, she went so far yesterday as to put his remarks about the enemy within and the way he talked about the national guard and the military on a screen at her own rally to point out to the people there in pennsylvania what he was
2:49 am
saying, this is different from the presenting herself at campaign events before you're also seeing it in their paid advertising, the ads against trump are getting tougher. they're less, it's less about her biography and more about criticizing him what's your evaluation? what do you think of these messages that she's trying out? what's breaking through in your view well, certainly she's made it easier for folks like me to get behind her. >> i mean, she's done all the fundraising. she performed well in the debate. she consolidated support in her own party almost overnight so a lot of those checkmarks made it easy for somebody like me to swim upstream as a republican and support a democrat. i do think she has to take it to donald trump. i think she has to remind people that this guy is willing to lie, cheat, and steal to stay in power. that's exactly what he did in 2020 he he's he's reckless, he's dangerous and i continue to remind my friends that are sitting there going to cash. it's. just so hard to think
2:50 am
about voting for a democrat for the first time. i remind them that we may disagree on policies with kamala harris, and certainly i disagree on a number of those policies, but we will never disagree on the policy of democracy. we will never go to bed at night, worried about where she stands on democracy if she's the president for four years and donald trump, i can't say that. i do think it's important for her to remind people of how reckless this guy is and look, you have to look no further than his further cabinet members is general's that surrounded them. these are folks that were behind the curtain with him that watch to make those reckless decisions and they're not willing to put their stamp behind them. that says a lot jeff, briefly before i let you go, i want to ask you about these comments that bill clinton made on the trail yesterday, where he referenced the death of laken riley, the nursing student who was allegedly who was killed and her alleged killer an undocumented immigrant from venezuela. >> let's watch her. clinton said the case of jordan
2:51 am
properly vetted, that probably having enough babies to keep our population so we need to do work so of course, the trump campaign seized on this immediately because he said, you know, if this person had been bedded, this wouldn't have happened. what's your view of what clinton said here? >> yeah there's a, lot going on there. i'm not certain i understood what point he was trying to make, but i will tell you this immigration is an american problem. we can, we can politicize this. all we want and blamed democrats and blame republicans. but the end of the day, if we want to fix the problem, we all need to get in the same room fix the problem we've got to talk about how we make the border more secure, how we set of rules and regulations that stops bad people from coming
2:52 am
in. and then we need to have a broader discussion about immigration in general, 16 million undocumented folks, some are embedded deeply into our army and our communities, and some are just outright threats. we need to be willing to be adults. didn't sit in a room and have that conversation. i hope kamala harris is able to do that as president all right. >> geoff duncan for us this morning, sir. always grateful to have you on the show. i hope to see you again soon have a great day, kasie. thanks. >> all right. i'm now for sports, the yankees and the mets both moved one step closer to a possible subway series. >> after winds yesterday coy wire has this morning's bleacher report. coy. good morning kasie starting to feel like 2000 all over again. >> i was the only time we had a yankees met series. and each of them getting impressive wins last night, taylor swift, travis kelce on hand in the bronx, ohio boy, travis, a big guardians fan, but he didn't like what he saw last night. third inning, juan soto bada being bought up. boom a towering glass off alex cobb to put the yangzi ahead. and then his slugger from another
