there are many newspapers across the united states have decided not to endorse i mean, this is a common refrain. you're hearing we heard the la times, but smaller newspapers doing the same thing. this is also very different than the teamsters deciding not to endorse. they decided not to endorse because they had they had a problem with their members supporting probably a candidate other than who the leadership wanted to support at the end of the day do you trust the news media? and i think to bezos's point here is if our editorial looks so slanted to the left that people will now question the other than non editorial portions of the newspaper and he's making a point, his timing is just off the ship is sailed. >> waking up today thinking, oh, the washington post is less, you know, less inclined towards liberals, democrats. the only thing that's happened is that fewer people are reading his paper. >> democracy dies in a one-party state. and that's what you've got at the washington post's so okay. >> well, i would like to keep i

wish i had seen the clock, but is after seven morning, my fellow anchors will be upset with me and i don't throw to the next show. thanks to you guys for being here. thanks to all of you for joining us i'm kasie hunt. don't go anywhere. cnn news central starts right now day, kamala harris is set to give her closing argument today at the very same site, donald trump held his january 6 rally he and trump's campaign is battling against what could become their unintended closing argument. hundreds of ballots destroyed after ballot boxes go up in flames thanks in two states, rebel authorities now trying to track down who deliberately set these fires at what one official is calling a direct attack on democracy serbian new details in to new civil lawsuits filed against sean combs now accused of
4:02 am
sexually assaulting a making the band contested at attack and year-old boy, i'm john berman with sara sidner and kate bolduan. >> this is cnn new central >> that is all there is until both stark being counted and today, kamala harris is ready to lay out her closing argument and for this one the setting is the message. harris will speak from the ellipse the very spot that donald trump told his supporters on january 6 to fight like hell, setting in motion the attack on the u.s. capitol that followed. >> now, almost for years later, the harris campaign says they expect a crowd of 20,000 people at that same spot. the split-screen entirely intentional. as for donald trump, he's headed to allentown, pennsylvania today, a majority latino city with a sizable puerto rican population noteworthy because his campaign
4:03 am
is struggling to contain the anger sparked by so-called jokes about puerto ricans told by a warmup act at his rally sunday. and last night, he had this new message for his supporters, quote, i'm the opposite of a nazi. let's start with kevin liptak, who's at the ellipse for us this morning. kevin, what are you hearing from the harris campaign about? what's going to happen there today >> the words that they're using to describe this speech are hopeful optimistic not necessarily the words that we were expecting the vice president to use in this speech from the ellipse, i think when we first heard that she was going to deliver her closing arguments speech from here outside the white house on the ellipse, the first image that came to mind was january 6, that dark speech that donald trump delivered on that day before his supporters went to the capitol. but this is not going to be a treaties on democracy. this is not going to be a dissertation necessarily
4:04 am
about the threats that donald trump poses to the american republic. certainly, that will be an aspect of what the vice president speaks about tonight from the ellipse. but aides are envisioning a much broader message from the vice president. they say they want her to contrast the presidency that she would uphold if she were elected compare it to the vision of the presidency that donald trump is espousing on the campaign trail. and the choice of the ellipse is very purposeful. aides really did need to check a few different boxes as they were selecting the venue for this speech. one is able to warn about the threats that donald trump is posing. and certainly we understand why the ellipse would do that. but the other is to try and present this vision of the president that kamala harris would be you know, behind me the ellipse is only about 500 yards from the oval office. that will allow the vice president to detail some of her plans if she were to be elected when it comes to the economy when it comes to
4:05 am
reproductive rights. and so that is kind of the balance that the harris campaign views this speech as striking. and certainly they do believe that this is one of the last moments that she'll have to convince what they called the conflicted voters, people who aren't necessarily sure about donald trump may be turned off by some of what he said hang on the campaign trail, but aren't necessarily convinced about kamala harris as their candidate. this could be the last tentpole moment that she has to convince those voters in the seven battleground states that she's the candidate for them. now we did hear a little bit of a preview of this speech from the candidate herself? yes. yesterday, listen to what she said as i said many times, i'll say tomorrow night in my they chain, if he were elected on day one, he's going to sit the oval office working on his enemies list. on day one. >> i'm elected president. i've exactly which i fully intend to be i will be working on behalf
4:06 am
american people on my team imagine any one speech will be able to convince all of the undecided voters to turn over to kamala harris's camp, but that is certainly the hope that at least some voters who are too tuning in, we'll see the vice president and determined that they will cast their votes for her. now i should say that security is very tight around the ellipse this morning, they've erected a toll unscalable black fence all around the park. the ellipse park. and so certainly security also a big concern as they await these 20,000 supporters that they're expecting on the ellipse tonight kevin, thanks for being there. >> it's good to see you. good reporting. thank you, sir. >> all right. this morning, donald trump will speak at mar-a-lago before heading to pennsylvania but the campaigns still trying to clean up the potential political mess after the racist, vulgar, misogynistic rally in madison square garden his allies worrying that the comments made
4:07 am
at the rally could hurt them in key battleground state ground states such as pennsylvania, where he's heading today, cnn's steve contorno joins me now, steve, what do we expect to hear from trump when he speaks from mar-a-lago today minute schedule addition from donald trump and we are told that the purpose of this is to sort of preempt vice president harris's remarks later today in washington, d.c. >> we saw him do something similar last week when she held her rally in houston, he decided at the last minute to hold a remarks to the press is what they called it in the city of austin. and that's what we are expecting today. there were not necessarily anticipating any questions him taking any questions. so we might not even get him addressing the elephant in the room. what happened at madison square garden. but we do know that there are people behind the scenes within his orbit who are very concerned syringe about what transpired on sunday, mostly because there they think that it might overshadow his campaign's closing message to voters and
4:08 am
there could be potentially political fallout in a key battleground state like pennsylvania, it has a sizable puerto rican population and then there is concern that democrats could mobilize even just a fraction of that support to help vice president harris and hurt donald trump. now, i will say i cover florida politics. democrats have tried this here before. donald trump has had a long record of disparaging puerto rico. you remember the videos of him tossing paper towels to hurricane maria? yes. survivors. they tried to use that to mobilize voters. a puerto rican voters in 2020 and it did not go necessarily as planned. in fact, in the county with the highest puerto rican population donald trump won or excuse me, performed seven points better than he did in 2016. so there's there's a lot of conventional wisdom about how this could hurt donald trump that might not actually come to pass. despite what happened on sunday night. i'm not trump also continues to push back against this rhetoric

very risky choice, will see if that pays off but this is gonna tell us a lot week from now the campaign says she's going to talk about the agenda, the middle-class agenda.'s going to talk about the economy. but again, when the picture is what the picture is what's the, what is the message that, that takes from it? let us see together, it's good to see you. sir. >> all right. thank you. kate new rules take effect today to force airlines to refund. and you automatically, if if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed, no more jumping through hoops are waiting for weeks to get your money back. cnn's pete muntean is with us now so, how long do airlines have to return money to passengers? and this is this is huge for a lot of the traveling public, including the two of us you get the money back nearly immediately, sara, which is gigantic, especially for those of us who fly all the time. >> and also huge with the holiday travel rush on the horizon, hard to believe that we are 30 he days until thanksgiving. change is music to the ears of consumer advocates also transportation

secretary pete buttigieg, who originally announced this back in april, known officially as the automatic refund provision. the department of transportation says this is now fully in effect as of just yesterday. here's what it means if your flight gets canceled or signal if again lee delayed more on that in a second, the airline must give you your money back automatically. this is big because airlines have long offered vouchers or credits for you to use on a later flight. so this is an essence, a cash refund, little bit of fine print here though, if the airline read books, you want a different flight, you must not accept that rebook gang or any other compensation the airline offers you. bottom-line, choose not to fly, you get your money back. the big change here is that there's also defined what is a significant delay if you're on a domestic flight that's going to be three hours late and international flight more than six hours like you now qualify for a full refund. the big question that he asked at the top, how fast will you get your money back? really depends on how you pay the requirements says the airline must refund

you within seven business days. >> if you paid with a credit card, 20 calendar days, if you use another form of payment and the pushback on this initially came from the airlines who said this would be overly complicated for them to implement, but transportation can secretary pete buttigieg and announcing this in a post on x, said passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them without headaches or haggling, he really put airlines on notice back in july telling them to make it super clear to passengers one, they are entitled to a refund. >> this has really blowing up on social media and on tiktok. so many people are happy to hear this, who have been caught up in the cancellations and delays that were really big in 2021 and 2020 but the good news here is that airlines are doing much better. the cancellation rate about 1% of all flights pete muntean, it is good news for a lot of travelers. they hate having to negotiate when they are frustrated their fight isn't taking off. alright, appreciate you. john.

4:50 am
endorses a policy that would really truly implement international law, truly implemented us law and stop the flow of weapons to netanyahu before his mass killing campaigns, killing babies to the tune of over 16,000 babies. then we would come out and publicly endorsing that would mean we would mobilize people here in the state of michigan and elsewhere. and what we did in the uncommitted campaign here in michigan in february within 1.5 million voter context and drove out 101,000 voters to vote for peace and against for democratic voters. what we were saying is empower us to do that were to run that kind of mobilization campaign here in michigan. i was astounded that the harris campaign told us in no uncertain terms that they do not want the endorsement of the uncommitted movement. i was surprised by that, and i hope that when we look back on this moment, we don't look back at that specific vision by the harris campaign and think, wow, it's unfortunate that they left those votes on the table, but i think we need a reckoning in our country why it is that democratic leaders would rather appease the apac pro-war lobby in our country instead of sine

4:54 am
below $3 a gallon for the first time in 3.5 years. now, this is a big deal because a lot of people we'll view gas prices as sort of a real-time barometer into the cost of living. and remember, it was just two years ago when the most visible part of the inflation crisis was gasoline prices spiking above $5 a gallon for the first time ever. i mean, this was a nightmare for consumers and it was a disaster politically for the biden/harris administration, even though a lot of it was caused by russia's invasion of ukraine. but us officials had to scramble to release the emergency oil to try to put out the fire thankfully, we are a long way from that right now, gas prices are much lower than they were at that point. and look, battleground voters, right now, they are experiencing much cheaper gas in the world for 12 months ago, including in nevada 79 cheaper arizona, $0.78 pennsylvania, wisconsin. and listen, we know kate that many americans are voting with their wallets in

mind, the economy is consistently the number one issue and falling gas prices are a very visible sign of significant progress when it comes to the cost of living. >> what is driving the prices down well, some of this is seasonal, right? >> i mean, when summer ends, we see gas prices come down because demand is lower, demands also lower right now in china. so that's a factor. supply is pretty strong because the u.s. is producing more oil than any country in history. but there's also the situation in the middle east, which is not as bad as feared, just a few weeks ago, yesterday, we saw oil prices crashed by 6%, worst day for oil in a year. and that came after israel attacked iran over the weekend. >> yeah, this israel, iran middle east, it is normally you'd expect that to spike prices, but that didn't happen because iranian energy facilities and nuclear facilities were unscathed. >> and so that was a big sigh of relief for everyone in the

4:58 am
amazing reporting on this in omar, you can explain what we're seeing here and why. >> so this is an incident that may have flown under the radar for a lot of people. but what you should know is that this ended in for now former corrections officers charged with second-degree murder and at least ten people who are no longer employed with the missouri department of corrections as a result of this incident. so this is a video we got exclusively in shows what may have been the final breaths of that missouri inmate oh, fell more junior while he was heavily restrained. and as a prison employee stood just outside. so what you're seeing on your screen there, this is at the jefferson city correctional center, right at that moment. this is after the county prosecutor told us a thumb or junior was pepper sprayed during a sweep for contraband and he's officers essentially, you're adding restraints to him so you're now seeing him. wheeled out. his legs are restrained. he's got things over his face as well. through what some have said, wear were masks that an inmate, a former inmate, who spoke to us, who said he witnessed it,
4:59 am
said that it restricted his breathing and he was yelling. i can't and breathe. this video does not have any audio and then the second part of the video, he's wheeled into essentially what's known as a dry cell and he's really just left there after this and he is still as you watch this video, he is still heavily train from his feet down. he has headgear over his face. he has a mask over his face as well than the door closes and essentially, we're not going to play the whole thing, but while well, he is in there, you see it points he's moving back and forth. and then nothing and then that is the less lasting image that you see. an a guard, an employee does eventually come and check right there and goes and signals for other help. but it was over 30 minutes pass from when he was first wheeled in there too, when help finally arrives, they checked for vitals, but essentially did not did not seem like they were able to do so successfully. he was declared dead that day. and as i mentioned for for now, former corrections officers charged with murderers as a
5:00 am
result, they pleaded not guilty. >> so what happens next? they pleaded guilty. >> so they plead not guilty, not guilty at this point. right now. so that investigation goes forward at this point, but also now the family is filing civil litigation against these former officers, but also against the state, the head of the state corrections as well, saying that this was someone who is responsible for a culture of this. and i want to read a quick statement from the attorney here, andrew m. stroke, who said that the graphic video shows the justified in brutal murder of both fell more of 38-year-old black man by correctional officers and highlights the complete disregard for the sanctity of life deliberate indifference in failure to provide him emergency medical care to othello, the department of corrections told me they don't comment on pending litigation, but we do expect to hear more from the civil attorneys on this as the criminal no proceedings. go ahead. and i should mention there was a fifth former corrections officer that was charged in this. those charges don't exist anymore. the county prosecutor wouldn't elaborate saying there are other cases pending and he left it at that this iscu
