hello again and welcome. it's time to break down the big stories with smart people. today, we are asking with election day almost here, some donald trump supporters worry about his closing message. why is he mending up so much? then, trash talk twists. will the puerto rico insult help or hurt kamala harris's chances. later, lock the clock. the yearly ritual and some on our panel want to stop. the gang is here and ready to go. sit back, relax and let's talk about it. up first with just three days to go until election day, kamala harris and donald trump are locked in a dead heat, according to the latest cnn national poll. as they stormed the swing states, donald trump has been focusing on his mail
7:02 am
maga base and ramping up inflammatory rhetoric with some supporters fearing will turn off women voters. >> she is a radical war hawk . let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. >> reporter: taking aim at a fierce critic, former republican congresswoman purdy >> let's see how she feels about it when the guns are in her face. >> reporter: comparing trump to a dictator and saying that women will not be silenced. >> i will do it whether the women like it or not. i will protect them. >> reporter: appearing with controversial figures popular with young men who often trash talk kamala harris. >> her and her handlers will destroy our country. >> reporter: elon musk pro trump's super pack aired, but then called harris a c word after facing backlash. some of the female supporters fear that his quote bro vote could
7:03 am
backfire. >> it's not fair to get overly masculine. 52% of the electorate are women. women will vote. >> reporter: democrats hope that donald trump's strategy will help put them over the top. >> i think what we have going on is the secret women's vote. >> here with me today is podcaster , journalist and author. president of the manhattan institute and national review contributing editor. new york times journalist and interview podcast host lulu garcia navarro and polster in new york times opinion writer . welcome back, everyone. will it carry trump to victory? >> i think it could make a difference. younger voters have always been a vulnerability for
7:04 am
republicans and donald trump, but there has been a widening gap among young men and i think there has generally been a decline in stigma around backing trump, especially among them, which could make a big difference. >> when you hear the tone that the appeal is taken, hyper masculine and somewhat insulting to women. do you worry about that? >> what i worry about is if you look at democracy, governments are getting shellacked. there is no chance. this is the closest election in modern polling history , which is partly because donald trump has not done with what nikki haley commanded. try to soften edges and bring people into your coalition. he hasn't done that, but he has made significant gains among men. the thing about gender gap is that it has two dimensions. >> can trump went with the "bro vote" and what do you make of the latest comment from trump about liz cheney? >> it's terrible what he said, but i think you trust to do this everyday, so that we are obsessed with the crazy thing.
7:05 am
this is very violent and dangerous. i'm sure that liz cheney is getting more death threats. it's irresponsible, but he doesn't care, because he really is a misogynist part that tells the story. he is comfortable doing things like that and using an excuse like, what i really meant to say was -- what he really meant to say is this , he hates liz cheney. i am a worldwide expert of tech burrows, but i don't think they vote with as much enthusiasm as women and i think it's a huge mistake. i thought nikki haley was on point this week saying that and i think issuing a warning given how many people she got to vote for, he should listen, but he's not. >> what you make of the vote and is it a way to win the selection? >> the bigger problem that republicans will have is around rather than just trump. being the decision to overturn roe v wade. think about this. right
7:06 am
before the election in 2016, the access hollywood tape came out and we're talking about misogyny, bad treatment of women. this was shocking and appalling, yet donald trump didn't when women in the election, but he didn't lose them by massive margins. the pulse we see show him not doing well with women, because the gender gap goes both ways. it feels like he's gambling. he could lose female voters by 10 to 15 points, but if he runs up the score with men in a way that he has not tried to before emma than he can counterbalance that. >> i think it's a huge miscalculation and i think the "bro vote" will not come through for him. women voting at higher numbers than men, especially in a place like pennsylvania. i think it's 12 points over men at this point, so i think the numbers don't lie. the other issue he will be facing is that there really was an impact among latinos with the comment he made about puerto rico being trash.
7:07 am
>> we talk about that in the next segment. one trump actor who is popular with young men is robert kennedy jr. both trump and kennedy talked about kennedy's role. that is if the former president's re-election re-elected. >> the key that donald trump has promised me his control of the public health agencies, which are hhs and cdc , fda, nih and a few others. >> i will let him go wild on health and the food. i will let him go wild on medicines. >> is rfk jr. a good choice ? >> no. i think this is really important, because now what is starting to come into view is what exactly a trump administration might look like and how extreme it might be. there is elon musk thing about letting him run wild on
7:08 am
reforming federal spending and now there is this. listen, he is an anti-boxer. if you don't like vaccines, think about this. polio used to infect, kill 500,000 people a year before there was a vaccine and now it's in the 100s. vaccines are safe and have changed the health prospects of children and people across the world . the idea that we will somehow be throwing that out is crazy. >> i was in the first generation that got the polio vaccine . does trump saying that he's going to elect rfk jr. go wild on medicines and health , is that a good political strategy? >> i wouldn't say that he
7:09 am
would be my first choice, which is an understatement, but in terms of the politics of it, it's kind of strange the way you now have this coalition that used to be thought of as kind of the crunchy left. organic and we don't trust big medicine. we don't trust big industries. there is this movement on the right that used to be thought of as this libertarian raw milk group that is much bigger now as distrust in science and bake anything has gotten to be a bigger deal . there is now a lot of people, including some young women who fall right into the camp that might otherwise be very skeptical of trump and republicans on grounds like dobbs. i am open to someone who will tell me that i don't have to vaccinate my kids or et cetera. i do think that's not an significant piece. >> we are talking about politics and real-life and public health. a big businessman who was one of the co-chairs of the trump transition team went on air this week to basically argue that vaccines cause autism ,
7:10 am
which has been just wildly disproved. >> it was really disturbing to see that on top of it. having rfk jr. in -- the only people measles beth best friend. it's really irresponsible. the other thing and i know it sounds crazy, but trump has a lot of supporters in the pharmaceutical industry and everything else they will push back on rfk jr. from a lot of perspective, it will be an ugly fight if he in fact gets in the job. i don't think he will pass the senate. >> they are talking about him as a health, so he won't have to go through confirmation. >> perhaps, but he won't be able to get anything done. >> final question. election night could be election days or weeks. we could be here for a while before we know who wins the presidential election . what will be your early indicator that you will be
7:11 am
looking at on election night to see whether trump is doing well or not? >> i will be looking at pennsylvania. a county were republicans and democrats used to run evenly and it is suburban philadelphia . it is a place that joe biden began running a little bit more away with. democrats are doing better and it's more college-educated than your place in pennsylvania. if donald trump is losing that by big margins, then it will be a big problem. >> if he's running even? >> he may hold onto more of the white college-educated that some people are expecting. >> everyone is analyzing the smallest change in the polls. some of which could increase good news for kamala harris. is this last-minute momentum real? trust issues. we will dig into the real concerns about claims of fraud before the ballots are even counted . later, going bananas. the artwork on sale for $1 million. you can buy it at a grocery
7:16 am
7:17 am
kamala harris in michigan and wisconsin , but still a dead heat in pennsylvania. her closing message was interrupted by a verbal gaffe from her boss. >> you can't even spell american. >> reporter: jennifer lopez joining kamala harris keeping a focus on a comedian's racist joke during the trump rally. >> it wasn't just puerto ricans offended that day, but it was humanity and anyone of decent character. >> reporter: j-lo joins puerto rican celebrities who have come out for harris since the madison square garment garden moment. >> there is a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean and advocates called puerto rico. >> reporter: the trash talk took a turn when president biden said this in a call with the latino voting group. >> garbage floating out there is his supporters and his demonization is unconscionable.
7:18 am
>> reporter: describing the comedians joke as garbage and not trump supporters. >> i strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for. >> reporter: harris clearly distancing herself from biden for the first time in her campaign hoping that the presidents comment does not undercut her final message of unity. >> unlike donald trump, i don't believe that people who disagree with me are the enemy. >> after seeming to stall for a couple of weeks, do you think kamala harris has regained her moment? >> there is a lot of moment happening and it feels like her speeches are better and she has gotten better at it. as you would and this is a truncated election. doing really well in putting her messages through . there is just no time is the problem. the garbage thing ,
7:19 am
trump appeared and almost fell over getting in and it looked like mr. bill standing in the rear jacket, so i think you took that stuff away and moved away, because everyone was focused on his outfit. >> we will get to that in a moment. reihan salam, do you see any uptick for harris in the closing days? >> the big advantage is that they are now the party of high propensity voters and voters who have already banked their votes in many cases. her case right now is to motivate her base, but also to demotivate potential voters for the other side. if this is a very low turnout election , then she has a much better chance of winning. i think that they feel pretty anxious and have good reason, but i think that if you get people to not turnout at the polls, then she will have a fighting chance. >> her speech and we played a clip of it there on the lips at the same spot that donald trump gave his speech on january 6 before the riot , a huge crowd an estimated 75,000 people. do you think that was effective? >> i think it was effective.
7:20 am
what she is trying to do is showcase herself in the last few days while everyone is paying attention to her . everyone is focused on the election. people are actually voting , so it is this show up election where she is trying to get people to show up for her. i think the puerto rico thing was a big moment, because quite frankly, latinos and puerto ricans do not like it if you trash their island. they take it very seriously and took it to heart. when you bring together bad bunny and the archbishop of san juan and j-lo , this is a very big cross-section of puerto rican society condemning something and you know you have a problem. >> let's dig down on that, because president biden is not doing harris any favors but she hasn't campaigned with him for weeks. the other day, he called for locking trump up for quickly adding , politically lock them up. after the garbage remark , trump did a photo op
7:21 am
in garbage truck. >> that's deplorable. this is deplorable for hillary and i think this is works worse actually. for joe biden to make that statement it's a degrees. >> how big a burden is bite them? >> he is now women's burden. this is a typical thing where women has to clean up over a man's mess but in this case, kamala harris is cleaning it up. he is -- cleaning up over president biden's mess. he needs to stay in the office and be quiet. i don't know if anyone really believes that he was saying that or that he has shown contempt for the people who support donald trump. >> the people who are voting for donald trump. >> sure. >> as a race motivator, this is the work material.
7:22 am
>> let her finish. >> i am on all of the stupid text message fundraising email lists for both parties. i will tell you that the number of things that i have gotten that have been like, joe biden thinks you are garbage. this is the message being pumped into the bloodstream of the maga movement to make sure there is not a single donald trump leaning voter in america. >> which is more damaging? the joke about puerto rico being a floating island of garbage and how that hurts trump or president biden's remark about the supporters being garbage, whether the apostrophe is there or not and how that hurts harris. >> it heard in different ways. i think the garbage comments are in extra base motivator. >> they feel that already. i think the comments are damaging specifically because trump's whole theory about how he will win this time is because he is doing better . he is doing better with black men and this undercuts that massively.
7:23 am
>> i don't think biden matters at all. he is still here and trump always manages to make a mess of it and wonders to the garbage truck, which is a weird visual. he's wearing orange and another weird visual. everything is visual. >> i understand, but i don't think people are paying attention to him, but i think they are paying attention to trump. let me finish. he stalls on the way there, then says crazy things. he just sucks up all oxygen. >> i think basically you have a lot of voters who believe that there is a certain sense coming from the left and the idea that we are elevating a warm-up act hotel rancid jokes and have been doing it for years. i think that might have been a bad call. the president of the united states was actually for four years been denouncing his political opponents and talking about ultra maga and fascism when referring to people who oppose his agenda. this is absolutely routine background noise and this garbage remark
7:24 am
is something that actually does remind people of it. >> you try to make literally every --. >> every hour trump makes another offensive a mark remark, because one, he is adult. you don't mind him being, but --. >> something that reveals the truth. >> you heard trump say that general mark millie should actually be shot for treason . you have had him now make these other comments about liz cheney invoking warfare. >> we got it. >> i don't understand how president biden misspeaking is equal to that. >> does it actually reflect something real and persistent? does it reflect the sentiment real is and persistent? when he's going out more hogs , this is a sentiment and that's why of course he's going to get some pushback from it for war hogs. when joe biden is describing people as garbage
7:25 am
for taking a pause , then that will be something that people will pay attention to. >> we are running town out of time in this segment. i asked for your bellwether for trump. what is your bellwether for harrah's? what will be your early indicator on a long election night that things are going well or not? >> it's not in a battleground state, but a state that used to be a battleground where there is a very large and rapidly growing latino population particularly puerto rican and it's a place that obama won by almost a 2-1 margin when he first ran and republicans have been closing the gap there. it's a place where harris can actually hold more obama -like numbers and maybe there marks really did make a difference. >> the garbage remarks? we will see. more than 100 election later lawsuits already filed in some could get to the supreme court. can donald trump count on the conservative majority there? statue scandal. we will break down the big reveal that
7:30 am
7:31 am
>> donald trump seizing on reports about suspicious voter registration forms and not pallets in a pennsylvania county. state election officials quickly dismissed the claims while also asking for patients in pushing against distortion of what's going on. >> lancaster did what any other county would do, which is to investigate and make sure that potentially fraud registration applications are not processed. >> since july, more than 100 election lawsuits have been filed by groups associated with both political parties in more than half of states. >> it is hard to wrap your head around how this year has already been and we have not yet even hit election day. >> add to that armies of poll watchers from both harris and trump campaign trains to monitor voting sites and flag any issues that they think are
7:32 am
suspicious, which leads us to wonder, is trust in the election already gone? >> there is a lot of deep distrust . one of the biggest problems is that a lot of our election systems are incredibly integrated. if you look at the contrast between florida and california, for example, one state where you have a reliable solid count on the night of election versus california were literally in 2022 it took until after thanksgiving for a solid reliable account. these are things that faith in the election system, whether you are blue or red state and there is a lot we need to do to ensure that the voter rolls are up-to-date and people can get reliable results fast. >> there has been polling on this. 66% of voters are at least somewhat confident that the 2024 election will be conducted fairly. there is a big gap in the electorate. 87% of harris voters feel that way, but only 44% of trump supporters. how seriously has
7:33 am
confidence in the election already been undermined? >> he has been force-feeding them lies the whole time . if you keep telling people whether the press is bad or elections are bad, you start to believe it and mix things up. he lost suits and lost every single one. back in 2020 where he repeats it and they believe it over time, which is why you see the numbers. we are not being force-fed all of this. >> what is your biggest worry about election integrity this time? >> we are not in a global respiratory pandemic. the longer it takes and the more time there is for mischief and by mischief i mean the things that we had from the ballot box being burned out on the west coast. >> it wasn't one, but three.
7:34 am
one in oregon and two in washington state. >> what do you do if 1000 ballots go up in flames and you have a state that is closest in florida was in year 2000. add to that, then generative ai were people can do all sorts of mischief that sets new fires online. >> it's violent. >> very concerned. >> i'm very concerned that not it will be administered improperly, but we are in a tough place on trust that could be easily exploited. >> that is violence, which is what's happening to the election workers who are getting threats and everything else. it's a little bit more serious. this is the plot of succession, just so you know. a couple of seasons ago, it was the same thing. it was the burning of ballots. >> i don't know. is there anything that keeps you up at night in terms of concern of whether or not this will be a fair election? >> what is interesting is the flipside. what you see on the left is a lot of concern that donald trump will try and steal the election as he did in 2020.
7:35 am
there is a lot of theories about what he was talking about when he said he concocted a secret with the head and republican speaker of the house and has not been clarified what he meant by that. there is a lot of writing and theories about what it means. frankly, everyone is prepared for the election to be very litigious. the question is, will it be violent? that is the fear of the left and right. >> that is the supreme court being drawn into election disputes. this week, the conservative majority allowed virginia to keep noncitizens from voting. even though by law, the activity must stop 90 days before an election. kenneth count on the supreme court, which has three justices that he appointed? can he count on the court to side with them?
7:36 am
>> i don't know. i don't want to speculate, because i don't want to feed into what has become a very moment for the supreme court . if the supreme court gets involved the selection and tries to tip the scales one way or another, then half of this country sees it as illegitimate and i think it will do serious damage not just to the court, but the core of our democracy. we are in a dangerous situation if the court at this point after everything that has happened tries to get involved in the selection in the way you are suggesting. >> again, there is polling on this. 44% of voters say that they trust the supreme court a great deal or a moderate amount to make the right decision about the 2024 election , which is not voting confidence. 61% of trump supporters feel that way and only 31% of harris supporters do. is lulu's concern about the court of how it's perceived and goes up to
7:37 am
the court challenging various results . is the concern about the court legitimate? >> we do have a track record , which is pretty consistently taking stance against former president trump, so we have reason to believe that they are fair-minded , thoughtful and balanced. there has been a campaign to undermine faith in the supreme court for some time and it has been very active and measures to remake the court and i think that's a legitimate concern. i just want to say that there is a lot of concern about noncitizen voting. trust and faith in elections is important . the appearance of things to be --. give me one moment. >> there is a law that you can't be purging voter rolls 90 days before, because they don't give people recourse. as it turned out, some that they purge in fact were citizens and there were clerical errors. we
7:38 am
all agree that we don't want noncitizens voting, but there is a question to whether or not you should be doing it. >> me, there was a case in which you had a noncitizen. we had a noncitizen who voted and their boat was tabulated, then basically said, i want to request my ballot back. now we are going to prosecute you , because the person requested the ballot back and normally we do not request. lulu, please. i would like to explain. >> there is no proof. >> we have to leave it there, but i think we have our answer, which is that there is concern about the court. usually, sleep is a good thing, so why do states try to keep you from getting it? let's split it. the head scratching art sale that is driving some people bananas.
7:43 am
once again, it's time to get the yay or nay on big talkers. up first, don't forget to fall back tonight. once again, at 2:00 a.m., clocks roll back one hour to standard time, which means you will get an extra hour of sleep. not everyone likes the switch. at least 30 states have considered passing laws to keep daylight savings time
7:44 am
year-round. arizona and hawaii stay on standard time . in congress, florida republican senator introduces a bill every year to get rid of standard time across the country , but it never goes anywhere. are you yay or nay on daylight savings? >> i'm yay on keeping things as they are. back in the 1970s, there was an experiment of rolling back and switching the clock. basically, it was a disaster and it caused all sorts of productivity mishaps. let's not mess with something that is working just fine. let's stick with it. >> how do you feel about having to get up at 2:00 in the morning? i never understood. getting up at 2:00 to put your clock back . >> i agree. it's ridiculous and confusing. i will get up early . >> there are electric clocks that do this automatically now. >> is a dad joke and it's a tradition that i make a stupid
7:45 am
joke. my family finds it as entertaining as you do. >> will get to an apple watch. next, the statue everyone is talking about. this week, the miami heat unveiled a statue of the legendary player, which shows celebrating a victory and fans immediately got heated. most pointed the statue space, which they say looks nothing like their beloved star. instead, many say that it looks like actor lawrence fishburn in the movie the matrix. tnt's charles barkley gave his take. >> unit an ugly statue, then that is what it would look like. >> it is so bad. >> he doesn't seem bothered causing it calling it an artistic version. are you yay or nay as a resident of miami on the statue?'s are first of all, yay on the statue, because
7:46 am
we got to love the heat, but secondly absolutely yeah, because everything is an artistic interpretation and that was the artist interpretation. it was lovely. >> this isn't the first time this has happened. check out this airport of cristiano ronaldo , which was so reviled by his fans that they had to replace it with this new one. where are you on dwayne wade's likeness? >> why are we as a society so that it statues these days? maybe we need to make art great again. i may nay on this. the statue is bad. put me down with charles barkley. art lovers are going bananas over a viral work of art , which is just a banana duct taped to a wall. seriously, folks. it was sold for $100,000 in 2019 and it's
7:47 am
back up for sale and it's expected to for as much as $1.5 million . the bidder with the most appealing offer will go home with a banana , roll of duct tape and instructions on how to install the arch. yay or nay on the one million-dollar banana? >> this is very connected to my views. i'm so reactionary on this. make art beautiful again. also, how do they keep it from rotting ? as a parent of a toddler, we have bananas in the household that do not stay good. >> that's a very good question and i happen to have the answer. the banana has to be replaced every two or three days, because they rot. the artwork has been eaten twice in museums. one offender explained that he was hungry. are you buying the banana? >> no. it's just silly. i don't even know what to say.
7:48 am
7:53 am
>> the commonwealth fund founded in 1918 is a nonpartisan charity and it came out with a series of studies on gun violence deaths in the u.s. and comparing them the countries around the world. you would be not surprised to note thatis pretty shocking that the overall rate of firearms deaths in mississippi was nearly twice that of haiti . mississippi, louisiana and alabama had higher death rates than mexico , which brings me to the conclusion that donald trump is talking about these immigrants coming to the country and bringing crime, but actually the crime here is already worse than someplace as they are coming from. >> you are focused on one of the biggest factors in politics, which we didn't talk about so far, money. >> if you look at kamala harris's principal campaign committee, it is raised over three times as much as donald
7:54 am
trump's. if you look at the battleground house races, democrats are outspending republicans by more than 2 to 1. if republicans hold their own and if they manage to win , that will raise questions about the utility of this cash. another thing i will add it is more efficacious. you can get about three or four times as much airtime if you are a candidate buying the ads your self then if it is a super pack. this is a massive unprecedented advantage and republicans are thinking hard about how to address it. >> tech companies had a spectacular quarter, including snapchat and read it. what is striking is how a lot of it was related to ai investments and the nursing upsurge in growth and everything through it. that said, you have yet to see the benefits on revenue and they are spending enormous amounts of money to try to win $30-$40 billion for meta-, for example
7:55 am
and it is on. >> where will we see the big moneymaker? >> we don't know. they are making the investments ahead of knowing. apple introduced apple intelligence and we will see if it's useful. underwhelming report so far, but we will have to see. they are making these investments. >> bring us home. >> we know that donald trump has been making a big play for young male voters on podcasts . the kamala harris campaign struck back this weekend the second gentleman appeared on my favorite podcast, the fantasy football show and he talked about how he has been in the league since i believe 1989 and talked about drafting his team. now, i feel targeted by the campaign, because she likes going to present all of my hobbies. it's leading me to believe that i might be the last undecided voter. >> you are telling me that you listen to the fantasy football
