tv Countdown To Election Day CNN November 4, 2024 3:00am-4:00am PST
3:00 am
>> a new poll shows democrats winning in the hawkeye states. >> the american people want to stop the chaos and end the drama. >> live from new york it is vice president kamala harris following in the footsteps - just a few seconds before 6:00 here on the east coast. a live look at detroit with one day left before election day both campaigns sending their pp hopefuls to this important blue wall state. it is wonderful to have you with us. this is it tomorrow is election day. the first polls will open just 24
3:01 am
hours from right now. your choice could not be more clear in these final days. >> as i travel, i see americans from so-called red states to so-called blue states who are ready to bend the arc of history toward justice. in times of uncertainty, we are reminded weeping may remain through the night but joy will come in the morning. >> having this piece of glass here but i we have over here is the fake news. and, to get me, somebody would have to shoot through the fake news. and i do not mind that so much. i do not mind. we have a lot of cricket people out there. we are
3:02 am
fighting like a son of a gun. they are fighting so hard to steal this thing. the safest border, i should not have left, honestly. cmac here is invoking junior, trump closing with more violent rhetoric raising the specter of reporters being shot and already casting doubt on the election results. he said he should not have left in 2020. part of a broader strategy should be paying attention to the final days of the race. the new york times said quote, former president donald trump and his allies are rolling out a late stage campaign strategy that borrows heavily from the subversive playbook used four years ago. what was that playbook? let's review. cmac look - >> look, all i want to do is this. i just want to find
3:03 am
11,780 votes which is one more than we have. because we won the state. >> he actually lost. trump was pressuring the georgia secretary of state to overturn the will of his estate's voters. when he would not give pressured his own vice president to simply overrule the american people. >> if mike pence does the right thing, we win the election. all vice president hence has to do is send it back to the states to recertify and we become president and you are the happiest people. mike pence will have to come through for us and if he does not, that will be a sad day for our country. >> this was the scene shortly after trump made the remarks of the ellipse january 6. generating that mob relied on
3:04 am
thousands of people leaving the life that the election was stolen from him. in 2024, is a times rights quote esther trump and his most prominent supporters have 22 partisan pulling and betting markets to claim he is headed for a quote question victory as his top surrogate, elon musk recently put it. that helps set the stage for disbelief and outrage among his supporters should he lose. that is when the message behind the scenes too with trump supporters trying to create a sense of inevitability that would raise doubt in a trump loss. in this final hours there are signs that late momentum could be with vice president kamala harris. the final new college poll shows the race to connect in the battlegrounds but found signs that late deciding voters are breaking for harris 55% to 45%. and a highly anticipated i will pull from the des moines
3:05 am
register shock the political world with a three point lead in the ruby red hawkeye state park a seven point swing since the last iowa poll in september. right now, democrats are cautiously optimistic things are breaking their way. >> we have momentum, it is on our side, can you feel it? we have the momentum because our campaign is tapping into the ambition, the aspiration and the dreams of the american people. because we are optimistic and excited about what we can do together. >> election day is tomorrow. joining us to discuss is our cnn political analyst and white house responded for the new york times and the national political reporter of axioms
3:06 am
and the former director of message planning at the biden house and - 2016 presidential campaign. welcome to all of you thank you for being here just when they are. what do you hear? >> i am hearing kamala harris, underdog no more. you heard it in that clip she saying she has the momentum. the trump campaign i can tell you there is more anxiety on the trump side and i have heard in at least a month. morale was low in september when it appeared the harris momentum they did not know when it would end and now they feel little bit on the ropes. i feel both sides, if they were being honest they would be like we do not know what is going to happen. i think what is interesting here is a contrast between these two candidates at this time by that i mean, really are seeing the former president lien on this dark portrayal of the country trying to tap into anger of
3:07 am
voters. anger can be a motivator to get to the polls as well. on the other side you have the vice president with this sort of optimistic positive outlook look at are going to a church yesterday one of the final days for her closing argument. i've been following vice president kamala harris and the democrats more than the former president. specifically with her message as well, i think it is interesting that a different sort of how she taylor's different speeches to address different constituencies that amount to vulnerabilities for her campaign. yesterday you saw her talk about gaza representing arab-americans sort of a vulnerability. you have seen her, former president obama be deployed for latino and black men trying to empathize saying i know that you feel as if the government had neglected you and trying to empathize there. and also we are watching the gender gap in this race as well. >> what are your text threads
3:08 am
saying? do democrats feel the item? i'm trying to find out how much that is changing. >> i think it started last week with the liz cheney comments and the winds are changing. everyone is more cautiously optimistic. no one knows what will happen but i think trump is tapping into the anchor because he knows there are no undecideds but his message will not win with the undecided women in the battleground states. i think that is why the vice president is leaning toward more optimism because she knows there are still people to get out to vote. you have to get these people to the polls to vote and i think the trump campaign realizes the need to turn at their base and she is hoping she can get undecideds. >> here's what we do not know. if this was 2000 or 2004 we would be at 5:00 election day if you only voted in one day.
3:09 am
the open question, is it better to have met him and we can have a go for now? is it the 29th of october 50 million people voted ready. 75 million people yesterday 85 the end of the day today. how do you quantify that? when is it yes? we will have a lot of answers i think at this time next week on what that is. can we talk about the iowa poll? let's bring up the track record and seltzer has in iowa. she has had a very good track record, the last time she was wrong was in 2004. she was just kind of narrowly wrong. you can see the numbers now the one she has for harris and trump it is within the margin of error. we were talking about this onset. i am not talking to anyone that thinks kamala harris will be in iowa. >> is not about iowa at all it
3:10 am
is about what it says about white women and the surrounding midwestern states. if the biggest voting block in this country is not blackman or whiteman got the biggest voting block is white women. if there is a significant shift even a small shift among white women in this country toward kamala harris in relation to the dobbs decision and put off by donald trump she could win this election pretty completely. >> i think it is also the 65 and older block and how she's doing with - voters and i think we need to pay attention to kansas, brassica and those results are coming in and how wide the gaps are. >> is one thing when returns start to come in there will be states and places we know the outcome at the top line we will get interesting information about the way these groups are moving.
3:14 am
3:15 am
3:16 am
by the way, the polls are just as corrupt as some of the writers back there. they can make them seeing they can make them seeing. i got a pull i am 10 points up in iowa when i my enemies just puts out a pull, i am three down. >> new reports - in the usually reliable ready state. the former president has won handily twice before. sources tell cnn the former president is fuming and his advisers are trying to reassure him by claiming the poll is not accurate. it has only been wrong once back in 2004. that pull and seltzer's record -
3:17 am
write this. a shocking iowa poll means somebody is going to be wrong . either ann seltzer and the new york times for the rest of the polling industry. what do you think about this? this has been my biggest question. the polls seem to be showing the same thing pet race. this seltzer pole is an outlier. someone will be wrong about it. what do you think is underneath the hood here? >> we talked about this. number one seltzer, i give her credit for putting this out she does not necessarily have to ethically is the right thing to do. watch the actions of the campaign if it was jd vance or tim walz going there i would think it could be real but number two seltzer is a little different unlike most posters
3:18 am
she finds geographic representation she does not stop until she gets kind of the appropriate number from every geographic. in the past it is good. think about trends. 2014 she was able to get on that first but in the era where people are not responding to polls is much except for if for lack of a better term a progressive super fan it can skew the polls and there are things democracy being 50% as opposed to the economy. it makes me think this is a little off. >> we were talking earlier about what this says about women especially older white women in the midwest. i think my big picture question about the polling and what we are seeing, because they can only pull the last election. this is the first presidential election since roe v. wade fell. i think
3:19 am
there are potential extractors we do not necessarily know about. you see something like that in there? >> i also see it as a referendum on donald trump remember the vice president has spent a significant amount of time in iowa. she did spend a significant time there. she could be benefiting from some of that. these people know her and have spent time with her and will still vote for her. >> i think it is really pick your own polling adventure. you can say that they underrated donald trump in 2016. the cobra pandemic screwed up polling in 2020. you could also say that the new york times noted that the gap of between republican white voters and democratic white voters in terms of response rate was as big as
3:20 am
they had seen since 2020. it is possible republicans do not trust them when they say they are with the new york times and they are still undercounting the polls you can make a convincing argument either way. >> i do not think there is many that think that vice president kamala harris has a chance of winning iowa but the trend you could pull out on her campaign is her message on reproductive rights is pushing people out and all the amazing people including in rural areas and specifically women as well.
3:25 am
developing now, election becomes whether, the southern plains bracing for severe storms. this is expected over the weekend at least five tornadoes touched down two categorized at ef-3. >> that is a minimum of 136 miles per hour winds. that left the damage you see behind me that - trying to make sense of the destruction that struck overnight adding to the danger.
3:26 am
some of the greatest important items is getting desperate because of the polling centers and voting centers with big election day happening tomorrow. no rest for the weary another round of severe weather possible in and around oklahoma city you saw the damage from and to the east. highlighting some of the strongest storm potentials for the afternoon and evening even though there have been a few tornado worn storms there are no active warnings but there are severe storm warnings to the west of, city. there is a strong upper-level environment that is fueling these thunderstorms as a cold front marches east into the day tomorrow. this is a cold front ahead of it, record warmth. there is the weather that will impact the place - places like chicago. try and generally warm for tuesday.
3:27 am
democrats hoping to keep georgia blue after flipping the state in 2020. here is your look at the latest cnn poll. trump leads harris by two points in georgia within the margin of error. we are standing by live at when it county voter registration center in lawrenceville, georgia. good morning. trump made of course so many false accusations about georgia election workers in 2020. we saw so much high-profile activity so many quite frankly lives disrupted. how has the state prepared for what he 24? but they are very well prepared and if you believe georgia
3:28 am
elections officials these are some of the most secure in the country. there are plenty of people do not believe what they hear. over the weekend secretary of state brad raffensperger, a republican is on 60 minutes talking about the deep mistrust between magda loyalists and how difficult it has been to stop the flow of election misinformation. >> they said they were 66,000 underage voters there were zero then they said they were 2400 nonregistered voters they were zero. i work for the people of georgia i respond and work for the voters of georgia. my job is to run a fair, honest, accurate election. >> reporter: we saw the efforts of disinformation pop up last week. a video circulating online reporting to be a vacation migrant who said he arrived in the country six months ago and had already cast a vote for kamala harris and was on his way to do so again.
3:29 am
that was knocked down by elections officials but you can already see the video seemed to take off with a life of its own. elections officials continue to push forward the message these elections are safe and secure. you remember last time this race was extremely tight and it is shaping up to be tight again. for an election decided by about 12,000 votes last time it could be similar this time as well. still to come, the election of course comes down to a handful of states, we will talk to democratic congresswoman chrissy houlihan about what she sees on the ground in her home state.
3:34 am
legendary actor and harris supporter robert de niro making a surprise appearance at a philadelphia eagles tailgate yesterday. he spoke about reproductive rights and healthcare before a crowd of fans whose those probably will decide the election. in 2020 joe biden won pennsylvania by about 81,000 votes. that is over just almost 70,000 people who attended that very eagles game sunday once again, the
3:35 am
presidential election could come down to the small handful of pennsylvania voters. >> this will be very close and trump definitely has a connection with the voters in pennsylvania and that is why it will be close. >> joining us now someone who was there at the tailgate with de niro. democratic congresswoman chrissy houlihan of pennsylvania. good morning, how was the game, i think we won? >> good morning importantly i was not at the game i was actually knocking doors. >> you were not at the tailgate i am sorry. >> roberta did actually win. >> that is all that matters, let's be clear. that morning. full disclosure i grew up in the district who now represent. my high school was in is in your district. as someone who knows the area well, i think my biggest question for you is what you are hearing and seeing
3:36 am
from women on the ground. both women who voted for nikki haley in the republican primaries and also perhaps, we've been talking a lot this morning about the iowa poll. not necessarily about what it says about who will win iowa but what it said about rural older white women. i wonder what you made of that and what you picked up in pennsylvania on these questions. >> the energy is off the charts here in pennsylvania. in the suburban parts of pennsylvania and the rural parts. to your point, the sixth congressional district where i serve is a combination of rural, urban and suburban. i had the opportunity all weekend long to visit the various different parts and pieces of our community and the days he has them for kamala harris is off the chain i guess i would have to say. the number of people showing up to knock on doors, phone calls are in the hundreds. i think we knocked on 90,000 doors just in our district alone and something like 800,000 across
3:37 am
the entire commonwealth to your other question about the energy amongst women particularly rural women, i was in a community down in the canon area sort of southern chester county near the border of delaware. all the men in the audience and all older women. i think the atmosphere there is one of, i think they have called it nauseous optimism. i think they're hopeful there will be a change and that change will be a positive one with kamala harris in the white house and donald trump will not return. >> do you feel as though, i mean the trump campaign has been kind of putting out and pushing trying to set an expectation of winning. and also of course their candidate has been raising doubts about the process along with that. what was your reaction when he was on the campaign trail over the weekend saying he should not have left? and then he of
3:38 am
course, made comments about reporters potentially being in the line of fire at future rallies? what is your response? be mac that is truly nauseating and bone chilling. this is an indication of where he to be successful and return to the white house, this is the kind of administration he would undoubtedly run. the idea he is frankly doing nothing but intimidating and casting dispersion and doubt amongst the electorate i think is pretty insidious. i think that is one of the contrasts you see on the ground in pennsylvania. you see enthusiasm, hope and happiness on the one hand and sort of dark, backward -looking vision on the other hand with a lot of punitive conversation and threatening talk. >> i take your point on that, john fetterman, senator fetterman in the interview kind
3:39 am
of acknowledged, despite all of what you just laid out that donald trump seems to have a connection with voters in pennsylvania. why? >> i think there is still a feeling amongst some of the electric desperate electorate that they have been forgotten. they are looking for someone who sees them in a way they feel is not around in the environment. i feel frustrated because i feel as though somehow, all of us have not been able to break through and communicate that decent and good things happening under democratic control with a mechanic white house. and all of the really amazing things that happened as a consequence of the biden administration and hopefully the harris administration. you stand on a street corner and you watch people pull lead pipes at our communities because they have been there for more than 40 years while they have been hurting our children and families because of the biden administration and hopefully
3:40 am
future harris administration, the pipes are being illuminated, people are safer and as a result there are jobs being created on that corner. i think there is a disconnect we are still struggling with to try to communicate what the democratic platform is about and about the harmfulness of the republican platform. >> you laid it out right there, these tensions, these questions and of course, we are finally going to get some answers from the voters who always get the last say tomorrow. grateful to have you, thank you for being here. let's turn to the scott donald trump telling nbc news he is tempted to be okay with the plan of rfk to get rid of fluoride in drinking water. over the weekend kennedy tweeted the trump administration would advise all u.s. water systems to remove flooring from public water on day one. the cdc recommends fluoride is a cost-effective way to improve oral health.
3:41 am
trump has said if he wins tomorrow he will bring kennedy on to work on health issues. >> we do not know what i'm going to do i spoke to the president about it yesterday and he asked me what i wanted and i said we are developing a proposal now. i want to be in the white house and he has assured me i am going to have that. i want to be in the position i am most effective and the chronic disease academic - epidemic and i am confident if i wanted to be the hhs secretary the president would like to make that happen. >> he would fight to make this man, rfk junior is hhs secretary. let's rewind the tape. let's remember all of the things we have learned about or relearned about rfk junior in this election cycle. >> the woman in front of me hit a bear and killed it. a young bear. so, i pulled over and i
3:42 am
picked up the bear and put them in the back of my van because i was going to skin the bear. >> ever since i wrote the article about me - have not been the same. i would never do something like that. on the national marine fisheries institute saying they were investigating me for collecting a whale specimen 20 years ago. >> have you killed any whales in your lifetime? >> no. >> maybe a brain worm eight that part of my memory. the bear, the dog the whale the brain worm. now he's going to get to you know, take the fluoride out of the water if he wants to. my issue with the clip from fox news no one is looking for rfk no one cares what he has to say and he does not matter. start talking about the top of the ticket unless the top of the ticket will win
3:43 am
you will not get anything. that's my issue probably one of the things we agree on for the last week of surrogates probably need to take a back seat. too many circuits causing more headaches than not. >> i have to say if donald trump does win i'm looking forward to the senate confirmation hearing of rfk junior as hhs secretary. i would also say donald trump, part of the reason rfk junior i can tell you was wary of endorsing donald trump was because he did not totally trust him. clearly what has been going on is trump has been saying making thomases about what his role will be and rfk junior is going on tv and saying donald trump said this. >> i do think provides a window into what a potential trump administration could look like and his cabinet. that is important for voters to hear that somebody who has made health claims that have been debunked whether it be about linking vaccines to autism. again debunked by health
3:44 am
3:49 am
desperation is the worst cologne. i would like to remind everyone that biden - by 80,000 votes and we are going to be back in the same situation. >> pennsylvania senator john fetterman slamming donald trump about his repeated claims about voter fraud in pennsylvania where 1.8 million people have voted early. both kamala harris and donald trump set to spend their final day in the battleground commonwealth in the hopes of running over those waiting until tomorrow to vote. four pennsylvanians who have been bombarded by political text messages and emails for months they are ready for it to be over. >> i feel like it has been going on for ever the endless text messaging and emails and then now it is upon us, i have already voted. >> joining us is the former adviser to george w. bush, john
3:50 am
mccain and the creator of paramount's's the circus. we can confirm one of our producers has a 16 area code. i am glad i no longer have a 610 area code. it is so much to deal with. you spend time in pennsylvania in the last couple of days and you are particularly speaking to puerto rican voters. did you pick up? >> reporter: i'm on the ground in philadelphia and have been for most of the week and will be through the election. i think you had really unique insights last week when we were talking about the garbage thing and puerto rico. it really got my attention so we looked into it a little more. i want to tell you you were right. first of all every puerto rican in pennsylvania has heard about the garbage,. they all know about it. they are all upset about it. again, you were right. there is a real pride
3:51 am
thing in puerto rico and there's nothing more that trump could've done to offend puerto ricans and to describe their country as garbage. and i will tell you we talked to a trump voter previously was no voting for harris in addition to the other voters were there who are harris voters are on fire. when other insight i want to mention about the seltzer poll. i think there is a huge, i think a big story will be a grandma gap. the thing that caught my attention was the numbers, the polling with women over 65. harris is winning that number by 35 points. to put that in context, when biden - trump won in 2016 he won women over 65 by nine and biden won
3:52 am
them 13. she is winning by 22 more points than biden won in 2020. that is a huge number and again, let's say seltzer is half wrong and she has a great record i know her too. i think the way she looks forward and not backward is a unique way of looking at it that does not model out of 2020. i have said all along this will be nothing like 2020. i have a feeling it will be substantial. you heard it here first. it will fit on the banner won't it? fascinating about, we talk to, on the show eddie moran the mayor of reading, pennsylvania he is puerto rican a majority latino city. he reflected what you are saying a lot of people who maybe they were not even paying attention to the election maybe they were kind of interested in trump but this crossed their phones and they got angry and all of a sudden there are more puerto ricans coming off the couch which it
3:53 am
sounds like you picked that up too. >> absolutely. the other thing i did not realize that really surprised me, 7% of voters in pennsylvania are puerto rican. in a race that could be decided by a margin of one or 2%, 7% of the population who are all on fire because of this issue. that could change the outcome of this election just among the reagan's in pennsylvania i think is incredible. >> it has been a subject of text messages among the puerto ricans of my family which is part of what sparked this for me. >> you had it right a week ago. >> let's talk briefly as we wrap up, the iowa poll. what do you think? i have not spoken to anyone the panel seems to agree we cannot really find anyone that actually thinks that harris will win iowa. maybe ann seltzer will be correct but if it is true trump will win
3:54 am
there, how do you explain what she is finding? >> again, let's say she is half right, she has been the most reliable i have worked with in my career. just, if directionally she is correct and drop wins iowa by a lot less than we thought, that is huge consequences for the actual swing states. if seltzer is half right about iowa i think harris could win all seven swing states. i'm getting in it harris will blow the doors off and it will be because of women and the granny gap. spivak this is our last monday of course before the election. hopefully a week from today we will have a lot more information but what is your final prediction? you gave us a little bit of that but still, who do you think will win and when we know? >> i think we have overcome located this by a lot. i think
3:55 am
this is the first post dobbs election. i think more women will vote there is an enthusiasm gap is like 10 points and the granny gap at it all up simple math harris blows the doors off and will win big. >> you heard it here first, luck the next 24 hours. saturday night live fans saw double this weekend. our what do we always say? keep, la - great any chance you are registered in pennsylvania? >> i am not. our it was worth a shot. - >> it was worth a shot. she is joining a long list of candidates who have appeared on the show during their campaigns. >> you dressed as yourself? our
3:56 am
hillary i have nothing to hide i enjoy being myself. >> of course trump ended up getting equal time from mbc after the fcc raised rules about this. how did she do? >> even the fact that she made a fun of her own laugh. voters like people that are self-deprecating especially in politicians. mayor rudolph is fantastic i think that skid was great. i also like that what is that name skid. that should not
3:57 am
be overlooked even though that entire skid was about him being overlooked. >> not only does he look exactly like tim walz, his name is tim. >> my name is still tim i exist, i am a senator representing virginia. >> of course you are. >> we are going to get points for self-deprecating. >> i thought it was pretty
3:58 am
good. that tim scott joke in there that was funny. tim kaine was close to being close to the vice president now he is running again for re-election to the senate race. whoever loses will either go back to the senate back to the governor's mansion. >> one other thing that stood out from me part of the closing message here in the last 24 to 48 hours however many hours we are from the polls closing tonight. this is an ad that will ferrell for kamala harris. >> this election will be one of the closest in history. your vote will make a difference, that means you gary oh, i am just one person. no, shut up, gary. last time only a few thousand votes kept trump at about this and this time we will hold you personally
3:59 am
responsible, gary. our what you think? that was pretty funny and much improved they did something like a man in the street thing that was kind of weird that was actually funny, pretty good. our it reminds me of what trump have been saying he is like you have to get him off the couch. >> look, we have a minute here we are one day out from the election. what are you watching for in the next 24 hours? >> we have talked about gender gap. i was just in pennsylvania following president joe biden we often say that democrats and even president biden and vice president harris had the union vote. i saw there was a break between leadership and rank and file. the rank and file still divided, the union vote is incredibly pivotal particularly
4:00 am
in the battleground states. will be divided when you talk about the entire workforce? >> north carolina and georgia count fast and early we will know those results first i think will be indicative of if we will have a long night or short. >> is a brick for harris it will be short if they stick with trump it will be long. >> i am watching the gender gap in the red states to see how this might >> the bucks county turnout a smaller version to us the philadelphia turnout the african american vote is still low it has been in the south, that could be a good sign for drop >> bucks county the one that may have better science for trump then say chester or montgomery. here we go, tomorrow is election day. thank you for being here you for joining us.
