efficiency? >> this is not a surprise, this is something elon musk was talking about out on the campaign trail for trump in pennsylvania over the last few weeks. i was at the madison square garden rally where he talked about it. they are calling it is the department of government efficiency. a new federal agency created would have to be approved by congress, there is not a sense that that is happening here but clearly what they are seeking to do is cut costs in federal spending and staffing inside the federal government. i think there are real questions about what that will look like. this says it is being led by elon musk. one question i have had over the last few weeks as we heard them talk about $1 trillion in cuts but when you look at how much money the federal government spent in the last fiscal year it is close to seven trillion dollars. over 5 trillion has gone to healthcare social security, veterans, so
1:08 am
if they are called cutting it trillion dollars they would not be able to without dipping into that. there is a real question on how all of this will work because obviously spending for agencies is approved by congress and the president not by outside groups and we have been told that elon musk is not joining the federal government per se. i still think there's a lot of questions over what this will exactly look like. elon musk has clearly had a lot of influence on the transition as he has been spending a lot of time in florida with trump. >> it is interesting they are calling it the department of government efficiency as if it is like the department of defense or department of interior, it is not going to be like that, it will be these two guys and whoever else. they will not go through any confirmation process are they? >> no, there is no confirmation because there is nothing to be nominated to. it is not an

actual government agency and i will leave it to others to talk about the irony of creating a government agency per se to cut down on government staffing and spending which is the goal here. i think this is a effort that should speak to the amount of influence that outside players will have on what the second trump term will look like when it comes to elon musk in this sense. this is long something he sought to do. trump pledged to cut federal spending when he was in office last time. that did not happen, the deficit went up so this is one of those wait and see what it looks like situations and how it plays out. >> governor christie known was just confirmed for trump's pick for department of homeland security secretary. that is a huge department. that seems surprising. >> i just want to tell you about this, we published this story at 1:00 in the morning last night. i learned she had been picked and trump called ♪♪ stay ahead of your moderate-to-severe eczema. and show off clearer skin and less itch with dupixent, the #1 prescribed biologic by dermatologists and allergists, that helps heal your skin from within. serious allergic reactions can occur that can be severe. tell your doctor about new or worsening eye problems such as eye pain or vision changes including blurred vision, joint aches and pain, her and told her she was his or a parasitic infection. don't change or stop asthma medicines without talking to your doctor. ask your eczema specialist about dupixent. on a all new episode of my podcast about grief is out now.

structure of the department of education or the department of the interior you have to go through all of these steps. like it or not, these two entrepreneurs are going to have to start learning that and following it and it is going to drive them crazy. we will see how much they actually do. there have been a lot of attempts to make the government more efficient, al gore did it. there was something called the grease report back in the reagan administration. it is a lot harder than it seems. >> what you make of the changes? >> i am open-minded about elon musk. i think we waste a significant amount of money in the government and i know there is a lot of criticism about how much should the federal government mimic private business or a publicly traded company, i think we need a little bit of it. we need to streamline. technology could

breaking news tonight, late neutron cabinet picks. he has named elon musk to head up a government cost-cutting office. called the government of government efficiency. we reported at the top of the program that the trump transition team considered a draft negative order to create a board to potentially purge generals from the military, what is your reaction? >> it is eerie and creepy and the thing is, this was a board that was going to be like, we want to get rid of generals that maybe do not have the trust of their troops or something along that line, that would be one thing but what it is actually going to be is basically culture war stuff.
1:23 am
again it is the important to point out there has been cultural stuff in the dod that has been acidic. it has hurt recruitment through there is nothing wrong with saying let's level the playing field and make sure the best people in the right spots because the dod frankly has a history of promoting the wrong people waste on what they do on their school work versus the trust of the troops but this sounds eerie and again it sounds like the focus will be more to make dod more republican instead of just more efficient and that is a huge concern because dod has got to stay a bipartisan agency. when this gets politicized it is dangerous. >> it is interesting, there was reporting in the past about trump being surprised that his generals are not pledging loyalty to him, they are not pledging loyalty to the country, they are pledging loyalty to the constitution, does the prospect of perching generals from the ranks, doesn't send the right message at this point?
1:24 am
>> if you're going to purge people i want to purge people because they are not performing at the levels they need to perform and adam alluded to this. i would not get caught up in the personality test. we have a recruitment issue in our military and we need to address it. i think the military needs to focus on things like and lethality. there is a ton of issues across the globe and some of the cultural issues we have seen introduced in the military have no place. i also agree with that and we do not want politics entering our theory, whether it is republican or democrat is irrelevant. readiness should be at the forefront, durability to do the job and do it well should be at the forefront so if you're going to purge individuals that are not meeting those metrics than i am for that. to make the unknown at this point is the attorney general. talk about the importance of that. >> the attorney general is unique because there is a dual row there. on one hand he or she is part of the cabinet and a advisor to the president. he or she will decide with the president i'll be spending more money to enforce the
1:25 am
border or spend more on fighting organized crime? those are policy issues. it is currently he, he also decides who to prosecute and that is a role that has been very separate from the president. there are in fact rules in effect. they are not laws but there are rules about whether the office of the president can communicate with the justice department about prosecuting individual people. what president trump has said is he wants those two roles to be one role. he wants to be in charge of who gets prosecuted. that is something unprecedented in modern american history. nixon tried to do it but it was one of the reasons he was forced from office. he was trying to politically manipulate who gets prosecuted. who gets taxes audited and that sort of thing. that is the real fear. if the
1:26 am
president-elect takes over the justice department deciding who gets prosecuted in the white house as opposed to the justice department, that would be something very new and scary. >> obviously with elon musk or any business person coming into the government there is always ethics concerns. obviously with the trump family there is. it does seem like elon musk is in a separate category in this administration. >> i think he is in a completely separate category. the conflicts of interest already are legion. he is a government contractor. he provides a enormous amount of things for the government right now so the fact that he will be going in and trying to cut people and departments that regulate him and his businesses is extremely problematic and let's look at his track record. what did he do a x? he guided the organization. it
1:27 am
remains to be seen what he does in the federal bureaucracy but let's not forget, trump came in and all of the republicans around him came in with a promise to basically cut the administrative state and get rid of government. this has been a long-standing goal of republicans and some republicans will say that is what is needed. radical change is a good but a lot of these people do not have the experience to know what they should be cutting or should not be cutting. these are not people with government experience so it begs the question, what are we going to be left with at the end of this? >> we are going to see a purity police everywhere. it is not simply conflicts of interest but who is loyal to the dear leader. >> we have seen by who he is putting in there. >> right and it is a one-way thing. some of these people pledging their fealty today likes many people dead last

years that used to work for them. they are weak leaders beyond that because they do not have experience so they will not be able to push back on things. >> you have been a washington figure for a long time, do you need a lot of experience to run the dod? >> it is a big deal. it is unspeakably large. so very big. you need a lot of different kinds of experiences. i really admire pete's military service but it also would have helped if he knew more about the government bureaucracy or capitol hill or international relations. almost all of these people i am ready to give them a fair shot, i am more worried about this reporting that everybody will be tested for their purity to the dear leader than i am about this nominee or that nominee. >> next the president-elect promised the generally six rioters the possibility of pardons, the question is, will he deliver? we check in with a why it or an grandmother who is convinced that trump will pardon her. my latest episode about grief just out, we will play
