5:03 am
for so many people every year those dozens of balloons featuring some of your favorite characters, we'll be watching them as they take to the sky and make their way to the iconic macy's department store on 34th street. our cameras captured those balloons as they came to life last night. this is always such a special thing to do here in new york city. the night before thanksgiving. a little fact for you the first balloon to be featured was felix the cat, the longest running character is america's favorite beagle, snoopy. >> so we have an incredible show planned for you. >> this morning. wet and incredible. >> the great martha stewart is taking some time out of her busy thanksgiving baking schedule to give us her tips on how to bake a pie that your family will talk about until next thanksgiving. >> and then we will head to los angeles and see hgtv home renovation guru drew scott. he weighs in on lighting fixtures, but but also on the true meaning of giving thanks by giving to those in need. this day. on top of that, we're giving you a front row seat to some of the most amazing thanksgiving day parades across
5:04 am
the country. if you do not know what a balloon is yet you soon will. we are live in philadelphia chicago, detroit, and houston. >> we are going to kick things off though right here in new york city. brynn gingras is just a few blocks away from us. she's at the start of the parade. happy thanksgiving, bryn happy thanksgiving, erika and john. >> hey, wait erica, can we take a quick walk down memory lane? do you remember last year when you were coming out to me on the parade route and it wasn't raining and it was beautiful and it was sunny and yes yeah, i do remember that. >> you didn't have an umbrella? yeah no, definitely didn't have an umbrella. >> but you know, it doesn't matter. everyone here is so excited for this parade. and so are we. we are so excited to join you guys. who is excited for this parade see i mean, listen, some of these people you guys, first of all, some of these people are from tampa florida. what are you doing? i don't know what that's about, but we met someone earlier
5:05 am
today. guys from salt lake city they were out here at 430 in the morning with their three children, trying to get the coveted seat along this parade route, and we are so excited for those balloons to fly. it's going to start in about 30 minutes. this parade and there you guys mentioned a few of those balloons. well, we got to check them out last night as well at the balloon inflation. and look we got the biggest balloon, the tallest is going to be minnie mouse. that is featured in this parade. and also spider-man we saw as well. it's going to be exciting a little windy, but those balloons are going to fly right over our heads and it's the most, in my opinion, exciting part of this parade. but we'll stay with you guys you are among the most exciting parts of the parade. >> brandon a fun fact about minnie mouse. this is minnie mouse her first appearance, which i was shocked by. yeah, because mickey, i think at that time, 90 years ago, she's breaking the mouse ceiling. you might say. oh, oh oh, i was saving that one all week. right we're here for hours. but that's the only one i prepared for this morning. i had that one waiting. all right. our thanks to brian let's get to the other end of the parade route omar jimenez is there.
5:06 am
what are you seeing now, omar look, it's minnie mouse's first time. >> it's also my first time. >> equally important. >> i mean, i think that that goes without saying. at this point. we're along the final stretch here so you can see it's empty, right now. but that's going to change in the next few hours. but what's not empty are the folks that are lined up here in the rain. >> how are you feeling? we are right. >> we are right. yeah i told them it's here. >> they're also cold, wet and rainy like all of us. but it's all good. it's all good. everybody is here to have a good time to give thanks. >> they are thankful for the opportunity to see it a lot of people that have come here year after year, and there is so much history when it comes to the thanksgiving day parade. >> it started back on november 27th, 1924, and at that time it wasn't floats. they had real animals that were coming through from the central park zoo. it was first televised in the 40s. it all really began as a way to boost holiday sales. and then it turned into the spectacle that we're seeing now. as you mentioned a little bit earlier, felix the cat was the first float. and then obviously we have seen so many
5:07 am
come after that and look their cold, wet and rainy right now that's not going to change. but the excitement is going to change once we get to the final stretch here. guys it certainly is. >> also, omar, i'd like to wish you a happy belated birthday yesterday it was omar's birthday. so much to be thankful for. >> oh, happy birthday. >> oh, yeah. hey, the parade started on my birthday, 1924 though a little bit earlier see? >> so you were meant to be here this year omar. >> meant to be all right there will be 22 balloons in today's parade. depending on how you count. right. because there are some that are legacy balloons, some that are first time balloons. many are making their debut this morning. as we said this is the first appearance for minnie mouse. i think she's also one of the biggest in this. >> i believe so yes, which is pretty exciting because i like that she's dominating. go minnie also dominating this parade our very own harry anton, harry. >> in some ways you are responsible for thanksgiving
5:08 am
today. how's it going out there i got to tell you, it's raining. >> it's pouring. i know there's some old men snoring, but the bottom line is you can't rain on my parade. i got the hand warmer out. i got my buffalo hat representing my buffalo bills tom, our cameraman can show you. >> we've got people who are coming out so far. >> we're going to get plenty more folks who are coming out. but i will just tell you guys i am so in a thanksgiving. so into parades, so into balloons that a few weeks ago just before election day, i went out to the meadowlands to learn more about the balloons. so let's take a listen 100 years in the making and finally, minnie mouse is going to be in the parade. a big character a big balloon, and a big first appearance for minnie mouse i say it's about time minnie is our tallest balloon in the parade so every year we're looking for ways that we can surprise and delight and bring these big, giant characters to life. one of the interesting things we were just talking about off
5:09 am
camera there is how much helium goes in really depends on kind of the weather. i don't understand any of this. maybe if i went back to weather camp i get it. but like, how does it exactly work where you sometimes need more helium or less helium? >> so we use a mix of helium and cold air in our balloons to help them fly so a lot of that is based on the lift in each balloon, which is determined by the size of the balloon how many chambers are in the balloon, and helium expands in heat. >> so if it's going to be a warmer day, we might use less helium and more cold air to ensure that the balloon is flying and looking bright on on thanksgiving morning. are you going to so we've got a balloon right in the sky this is like amazing, right? >> this is gabby from gabby's dollhouse. this balloon started production almost eight months ago from initial sketches. then we go into a 3-d render. we pattern out the entire balloon, we build it in studio, and today is our opportunity to fly it in real world conditions. >> we have six new balloons
5:10 am
this year. how do you choose which balloons that are actually going to see the light of day? >> the goal of any macy's thanksgiving day balloon is really about finding those characters that resonate with audiences of all ages. >> i'm here with my dear friend spider-man who swoops his webbing all over the bad guys. we're going to attack crime together. thwip you taught me that when i was going like this. there's a particular. what is that again? so you were telling me it's a thwip, right thwip thwip is the sound effect. >> thwip that spider-man makes when he slings webs yeah. >> so there are some things that you can obviously plan for, but then there are some things that you can't possibly plan for what is perhaps one of the things that has occurred over the years where it's like, wait a minute, what what happened here? >> i think every year there's something that can happen. that's unexpected. but i think one of the great things about this team at macy's studios and the thousands of volunteers that helped make this parade come to life, is that we're
5:11 am
really prepared. we do trainings throughout the year for balloons of course, weather is our biggest contingency and so we have different plans for different wind speeds that happen on the parade morning, and we're prepared for anything that can come our way man down, man down. >> our dear friends are down on the ground. we're learning that practice hopefully will make perfect because it turns out, inflating a balloon and keeping it up into the air ain't so easy for all. so we cut the ribbon and we start the parade. what is it one three, two one. >> let's have a parade. >> three, two one. let's have a parade look the bottom line is, i don't care if it's raining. i've taken the hat off it's just going to be a glorious day regardless of the weather. because when there are balloons and their floats and there's a parade, it's a sunny day. and as my uncle neal once said in
5:12 am
the 1970s, you got to make your own sunshine. so i'm making my own sunshine, my own sunshine today, guys by the way, he's talking about neil sedaka, who really is harry's uncle. >> and i do hesitate to say this, but when you're wearing the bill's hat, the one thing i was thinking, you know, we look like a bills fan. i was like, harry, and don't do this. you know maybe harry should have no shirt on. he should be like, you know, have no shirt. and out there in his skin with a big like t for thanksgiving painted on your chest, like given the naked cowboy a run for his money i will do anything for you. >> john berman and erica hill. we know and anything for ratings. >> that's why we love you harry, and thank you very much all right. >> let's head now to philadelphia polo sandoval fully dressed, is waiting for us from america's longest running thanksgiving day parade. and you are, as i understand it, just a little jump away from the iconic rocky steps at the philadelphia museum of art i see some balloons in the air there, too. polo erica i've been at macy's
5:13 am
for the thanksgiving day parade in new york. >> i've loved every minute of it, but let me tell you, i am definitely feeling the love here in the city of brotherly love. can i get some cheers from the crowd here in philly next to this massive turkey? folks, things are getting ready to get started. i got some people from washington. i got some people from kansas city. i got three sisters back there getting ready to pull the pull. the turkey, and also an invitation to th enough. >> you can come on down. >> we have a 22 pound turkey. we're smoking 105 years. >> this parade's been running a little bit of rain is not about to stop that doesn't stop you at all absolutely not. what are you most excited about today? >> i just love the parade. >> the excitement, the balloons. this is the beginning of the holiday season and you get to spend all this great time with the gobblers. >> the gobblers i love it, turkey people. all right folks, the gobblers enjoy today. stay
5:14 am
dry very quickly. i'll send you off with with this pretty incredible image that's tweety bird right here. you can see a lot of brave souls working to strap tweety down as things get ready to get started. and finally they're ready for this. even taking down the traffic lights as well temporarily to accommodate these massive floats. erica john from philadelphia, let's go back to you that's great. >> i love that you have a new dinner invitation. polo. not surprising polo sandoval probably one of the loveliest people on the planet. >> the gobblers want him over thanksgiving. i got some people in philadelphia today. just shout out to all of you i am thankful for all my people down there today. all right, now to atlanta where people are burning calories ahead of the big meal. that's a good idea. the largest thanksgiving half marathon in the country just underway. that is where we find cnn meteorologist allison chinchar. so how's the weather going to impact today's plans right. >> so it was a close one because when we first got here, it was raining and it rained. really. maybe still about about 30 minutes. right until the race began. but it is dry now
5:15 am
the weather is perfect for running the half marathoners have already been going. they're about to start the five k behind me again. not exactly the warmest, but honestly, this is perfect weather here for this race itself now, one thing to note this isn't the only location, however, that's been looking at rain. if you look at the country, you've got rain showers stretching from georgia all the way up through maine. that includes philadelphia, washington, d.c., and yes, unfortunately, it also includes new york, where the parade is set to begin here shortly. one thing to note the rain is coming in waves, so it's not always going to be heavy you'll get some light portions, then you'll get some heavier portions, but no snow at least this year for the parade that's going to be the only good spot in the parade forecast itself, because it's also going to be a little bit chilly. but we are expecting snow interior portions of the northeast and new england. some spots could pick up as much as a foot of snow before it's all said, and done. guys, back to you all right.
5:16 am
>> meteorologist allison chinchar in atlanta, where it's not raining. i'm waiting for those light waves to come through because so far it's been just the heavy ones of rain. we're in a band right now. >> we've got some of the bands all right, much more ahead as we celebrate thanksgiving in america. >> up next, chef bobby flay will join us to cook up a tasty thanksgiving dish, and later we'll go to atlanta, where rapper t.i. is giving thanks by giving back to the community. we are back in a moment. >> someone else? well, it's eating me up inside but we run our course. >> we pretended we're okay now. >> if we jump together, at least we can swim far away from the wreck with cnn heroes. >> an all star tribute meet and celebrate the honorees. then find out who will be hero of the hero plus a special tribute to michael j fox, cnn heroes, an all star tribute sunday, december 8th at eight on cnn. >> when a tough cop finds you on the go, it would be silly hey, trying to rob a juice pack

5:22 am
hey everybody, it's bobby flay. >> happy thanksgiving! this is my favorite day of the year. i like to say that i wake up hungry on thanksgiving and for good reason, because it's the best food of the year so today i'm going to make a side dish of spice crusted carrots and it has a yogurt sauce with some harissa kind of running through it some roasted beets and some pomegranate. so all those good autumn flavors, things that a little spicy, a little tart, a little sweet. it's perfect for your for your thanksgiving side dish parade because, i mean, let's face it turkey is great. i love having a roasted turkey on thanksgiving. but you know, the side dishes really play the best supportive roles. so let's start let's begin. we're going to start by putting our carrots in the oven. now i have these are kind of fancy carrots. we call them heirloom carrots. they come in different colors. there's purple there's sort of like a yellowish off white one. there's and of course the classic orange. but they're, they're, they're heirloom carrots. so they, they have a
5:23 am
really nice inherent sweetness that carrots do just really, really, really good flavor and they come in different sizes and colors and they're very, very beautiful. so we're going to start by just putting a little bit of oil on top. you can use olive oil if you'd like or even like a lighter oil um a lot of people including myself, are using things like avocado oil these days, which is a lighter oil. really good to cook with. it's got a very low very high smoking point. so it works out nicely. some salt and pepper and we're going to put these in a 350 degree preheated oven for somewhere between 15 to 18 minutes. let's say that um, just because they you know, there's different sizes. so some of them will cook, you know, quicker than others depending on the size okay. so as those are roasting, we're going to move on to our beets. so we have some roasted beets here. these are golden beets. now if you can't find these that's totally fine. you can use the big red beets
5:24 am
as well. just cut them into into smaller pieces. but the carrots and the beets work really, really nicely together but again we're going to bring some extra flavor to those. so i'm going to add some cumin which is um, a really beautiful spice. you'll find cumin in lots of latin cuisines like cuban or mexican spanish cuisine. really, really fantastic. it's it's it's kind of has like a, like an earthy flavor and a little bit really goes a long way. then we want some brightness. we're going to add some fresh parsley to this some salt and pepper and then we're going to add some pomegranate molasses. this is an ingredient that's become very very popular as of late um, a little tart a little sweet. think about it this way. it's pomegranate juice that's reduced all the way down into a sirup, and we call it pomegranate molasses. and we're just going to put a little splash of that in there as well. and then some olive oil and we're just going to mix this together okay. so salt
5:25 am
pepper salt and pepper olive oil a little bit of parsley some cumin and some pomegranate molasses. and then like everything you want to make sure you give it a taste. mhm the sweetness of the beets themselves. tartness of the pomegranate. really nice balance. okay. so now we have the carrots roasting. we have the beets ready to go. we're just going to create these little components that we can put them all together at the end. and now we're going to make some flavored yogurt thick greek yogurt something that i eat every morning for breakfast but also can be used in savory dishes all the time. of course, we're going to add a little bit of parsley and some fresh thyme and then some lemon zest. and the reason why i'm adding the zest is because the zest has tons of flavor. and if you put lemon juice in here, it's going to really thin out the yogurt i want that i want that thick texture to remain, but i
5:26 am
want the lemon flavor and then we're going to take some harissa, which is like a the best way to describe it is like a north african spicy ketchup. it's got lots of like spices in there. and we're going to put the put the harissa into the yogurt but i'm not going to mix it completely. we want it to give it that sort of marbled like look flavor or color and then we're going to take our carrots out of the oven and a little bit of oil in the pan and we're going to crust the carrots with a little spice rub. and then we're going to put the spice rub carrots right in the pan and give it that really nice crust. and then when we come back a little while i'm going to show you how to plate this as well as the rest of my thanksgiving meal so see you soon oh man. >> that looks delicious. you

this parade. even though it's raining, it hasn't stopped a lot of these parade growers from getting here. super early. >> i love the excitement. tell me where you're from and what's your name? >> my name is xantha and we're from saint louis, missouri. >> oh my gosh, welcome to new york city. is this your first time in new york city? no. first time at the parade. this is a bucket list item yes, absolutely. it looks like you have your whole family here. >> our family and our friends from tampa, from tampa so exciting. >> and i love it. you guys all had a little countdown going. you are so ready. >> we've been planning for a long time. >> why was it so important to get you, your family and friends here today? even though it's raining? you're here it's a bucket list. >> i mean, they'll never forget this. will you guys no. >> and you know what? just the rain is going to add to the experience. i know we always say that. and we're like, you know but it'll be true. you're going to be like i said, in the rain for several hours and watch the parade go right past me yes. >> thank you. >> happy thanksgiving guys. i want to get out of your way and.
5:36 am
>> the first sign that this parade is ready to go. and it's actually so exciting when those guys go by because turkey tom, the turkey is on his way. guys, you are in for a treat in all of this. crowds who've been here for hours in the rain are in for a treat as well. guys it's so cool to watch the police roll by there to see tom turkey. >> what you're looking at right now is minnie mouse just up the street from the start of the parade. as we said, this is the first appearance in the parade for minnie mouse, so we can see some of the some of the clowns and people getting ready to walk down and get things started. but if you're still there, are you seeing things move by you yet all right. brant is engulfed in the revelry of the parade, but that's understandable because it's all getting started right now. >> people so excited and it was pretty cool as we just saw the nypd roll past us. john berman and i had huge grins on our faces. it's very cool. it's great to see on tv. it's pretty
5:37 am
cool to be here on the street as well. >> oh, there's tom, that's a live picture of tom, the turkey, the official start of the macy's thanksgiving day parade it will all get going in seconds right by us. and then it won't stop for hours and hours. >> my friends on sesame street here, they are. we're going to see them in just a minute, too you're looking at live pictures right now when you say your friends on sesame street. >> erica, you actually have been working with them for years in different ways now, and the way they do things just amazing. >> oscar even he's smiling. i mean, you know, it's a good day when you can get oscar the grouch to smile just a little bit. it was a wave. i think that counts. oh, we see a minion. >> that's fantastic. minion. the minion there. one of the floats, obviously and tom, the turkey. actually, i'm sorry, the balloons. we have to issue a cnn correction. the minion. the minion is a balloon, tom. the turkey, though very much a float, he is very much a float. >> a self-propelled float. his wings move as you see there. and he is how we know that
5:38 am
things are really getting started. kicks off this parade and reminds us why we're all here. not to eat him. to give thanks, to give thanks to him at least for the duration of the parade i can't speak to what happens after the parade the giant floats. >> they may need a giant turkey. that's all i can say. >> it could happen could happen. this is birdman. have you ever been to the parade before i you know, i have to be completely honest we've come. >> when my boys were really young, we tried to see different parts of it. and when we first moved to the city, we tried to take our family to parts of it. i never have been this close to the action, nor have i. >> so my family went a couple of times, but i was always working we would take our boys to see the balloons being inflated the night before. they would do that around the natural history museum just up the street from us. it's a really magical way to spend the night before thanksgiving. then we'd have pizza, not turkey, but i've never been this close. it's great. it really is magical. >> you can feel the energy here. and one thing i will point out, we have maybe mentioned a few times it's raining and you can tell by the ridiculous hat i'm wearing and trying to keep the rain off my
5:39 am
face that it's raining but the good news is, it's not that windy. and that, of course, is a big deal because it means that the balloons can fly. the wind isn't so strong. that will affect anything. people are just going to be a little damp as they watch the balloons and the floats in all the good cheer, and i think that's all manageable it's also for so many people. >> as we just saw, brin was speaking with a woman from saint louis. she was saying, this is a bucket list item for so many people that's what it is. rain is not going to dampen their holiday. this is, for many people once in a lifetime opportunity to see this parade up close to see a minion, ronald mcdonald, go by and it's getting a little loud behind us. i see, i see tom, you know, thanksgiving is all about coming together. >> and if a minion and ronald mcdonald can operate that close to each other, you know, we can all come together right where we're standing. we see one of the first marching bands go by and we see tom, the turkey himself is actually i can reach out and touch tom the turkey almost. >> look at that. there he is. hi, tom tom is waving his wing
5:40 am
at us. >> he is. >> he just looked at you. berman i saw him wink. >> i'm waving back to tom right there. oh, that was cool that was great stuff. >> we're only just getting started. we did that just ahead here. an act of gratitude for those who have paved the way. we're going to take you to see how rapper t.i. is giving back to senior citizens on this thanksgiving. also, aaron french of lost kitchen joining us live to whip up a little crispy onion potato pie. i am getting really hungry. >> that sounds so good cnn heroes on all star tribute meet and celebrate the honorees. >> then find out who will be hero of the year plus a special tribute to michael j. fox, cnn

for me, once i first had fried turkey. that was a game changer. another tradition that we have is that i always have our pumpkin latte candles from uncommon james comey. i'm all about ambiance and i want people when they first walk in my house to just have those incredible smells. between the food happening in the kitchen and the candles going, i have the candles in every room in my house, including the bathroom, i just i love setting that mood and those candles are crucial for that this year i'm just extra thankful for health, for my children's health. i have three kids, so i know how lucky we are that everyone is very healthy. myself included room is very important. >> we smell great right here at the macy's thanksgiving day parade. you're looking live in philadelphia now that is tweety bird in the philadelphia thanksgiving day parade. philadelphia is the oldest

continuous thanksgiving parade in america tweety, of course, from sylvester and tweety, part of the warner family. let's keep it in the family. >> i love keeping it so. tweety is basically our cousin we see ronald mcdonald back here in new york city making his way down to us here, coming down central park west, right along the park. it is so fun as each float, as each balloon gets a little bit closer. when we start to hear the crowd really get excited and start to cheer. >> ronald first made his appearance in this parade in 1987, so he's been at it a while. but i would say he aged well. i mean there's no gray in that red hair no, and i don't think he colors it either. >> i'm pretty sure it's natural. >> all right now you're on camera, just so you know, people can see your hat. >> also, natural don't i don't color this at all my wings sort of flap a little bit but yeah. there you go. >> just so people know, we are wearing this festive hat where eric, of course, wearing a thanksgiving hat, where this comes from cnn's thanksgiving. i'm sorry, 4th of july in america special. that's when i first wore it. but i figured, you know

5:50 am
the day i was born and raised was one of the pioneers of hip hop in the south. how important is he to the atlanta? well, look, man, native born and raised in atlanta and always keeps his heart and feet planted right here in the city doing good work like this. he's giving away food today. this is the king of the south, man. a very generous brother, one that's very good at what he does in business and music and in supporting communities tell us about the example that he sets for the city. yeah, he sets a great example think about it. he and i are from this neighborhood and so the young people that want to be him, they also know that that means that comes with generosity that comes with business acumen, that comes with family, that comes with gratitude they see, i want to be t.i. and also have influence and to be able to be a good contributor to the community, you can do it, get you something in your hand, help pass that song. come on now, get to work. get to work i got you young dro you're

6:02 am
they were smiling the whole time. this is bluey's chasing red balloon. >> as you can see it's 52ft tall and on the ground. i don't know if we have a shot of it. there was also a balloon vehicle, which is? >> it's a balloon and a vehicle. so it's a balloon on top of a vehicle that propels the balloon down the street, as opposed to, as you see here, the helium inflated balloons. so there are all those balloon handlers who walk the balloons. the length of the parade route. >> so just be warned. if you ever see a balloon driving down the street, it is a balloon. >> it's a balloon. all right which sounds like popsicle, but it's balloon we are live here in new york city. >> we can see the parade firsthand here. we've got a great seat for it. you can see right over our shoulders right now. it is blue you know, there are people from australia last night. he's like, it's like the dead. you know, they travel with bluey and wherever he goes, they go. so there are people with gary tuchman watching bluey being blown up from australia. so excited to see him. so we're here
6:03 am
watching the parade live and we're going to go to houston, which begins its parade later this hour. >> we do want to start this hour's coverage, though. we're going to head to the city of brotherly love. philadelphia's thanksgiving day parade. that's where we find our polo sandoval. this is the 105th annual parade. philly's is the oldest thanksgiving day parade in the country. polo erica, this is a parade that started it all 105 years ago. >> and a little bit of rain is not going to change all that. like the rain. this parade does come in waves. just a couple of minutes of silence before yet another band comes around the bend here. joining us live right on the benjamin parkway, benjamin franklin parkway. you see a drill team that is now taking aim straight down this iconic parkway where you're seeing again despite that rain, these folks turning out a lot of these folks have had an opportunity to speak to a lot of parents, a lot of grandparents hoping to catch a glimpse of their children. let's check out some of the crowds here with you. you have some new friends from south south new jersey there, and
6:04 am
plenty of folks that are lining this parade route. 1.4 miles of color on this gloomy day and this is something that again has continued already for for decades. so this is a little bit of rain is not going to change things. when you hear from some of the folks in the crowd spoke to some people from indiana, they're here to see their son jack marching in this parade. so this really just speaks to the excitement a lot of people have reason to be thankful, even for the rain. amid a pretty nasty drought. so there is a little bit of thanks there. but in terms of what we're seeing, again, a lot of smiles as i stand out here. erica john soaked to the turkey bone. it is not raining on anybody's parade. all of this ending straight down the parkway on the iconic rocky steps. that's where some of the folks are going to be seeing performances. the rest of the day. as we send things from the city of brotherly love back to the big apple all right, polo, appreciate it. >> thank you. >> and it is the end of the philadelphia parade. they run up the steps and they all shout
6:05 am
adrian at once. it's how that parade ends. just saying. all right. we just saw blue go by here in new york. let's get out to chicago for the 90th annual chicago thanksgiving day parade. it just began. and whitney wild is right in the middle of it. i understand that that teddy, the turkey balloon, leads the charge there. what else are you watching for oh, we have dozens of performances this morning, guys and what makes this parade so special is that there are so many cultural performances. >> chicago is such a multicultural city. and so with this parade aims to do is really give you an idea of the flavor of chicago the very different flavors as you said, this is the 90th anniversary. this is a very big day here for the chicago thanksgiving parade. it takes more than a thousand volunteers to put this parade on and it takes at least a year and a half to plant. so they're on 18 month cycles to get this parade off. today. they're expecting 475,000 spectators. you're seeing quite a few of them right over my shoulder here, filling in.
6:06 am
because this parade is set to really begin in earnest in just a couple minutes. we spoke with the parade's managing director. he's been working parades for decades. here's what he had to say about why this parade is so special and so much does happen and our parade looks and feels like the city of chicago and in my opinion, represents what the nation looks and feels like as well. >> it's cultural groups sharing their traditions with us in celebration of thanksgiving. >> this is the 90th anniversary of the parade. what is this moment like for you today? you know, i'm actually honored to be part of this event for so long i feel like it's a stewardship that i have an obligation and responsibility to make sure that this is a great event for the people of the city of chicago and the people watching at home across the nation you guys, there's another parade, another performance happening right now, right this minute we are going to introduce you to some of these performers later today. so we'll check back in with you in a few guys back to you all right. >> looking forward to it.
6:07 am
>> that is so cool one of the things that's so nice about today is everyone's smiling, right? everyone in the crowd smiling. all of our friends from cnn smiling. it's nice to get to do something like this every once in a while. we have bourbon, and i have very much been looking forward to this thanksgiving for that for that exact reason. >> this is fun, and it's bringing everyone together. it's a great day. >> yeah, i don't think the heavy rain is going to come down for a while either i think it's going to be fine let's get right out to brynn gingras who's not too far from us watching some of these bands go by. bryn yeah that's right. >> you know what, john? i'm so happy you mentioned that. >> because i want to give like, a little shout out to all these people that are walking in the parade. >> the balloon handlers, the bands the clowns, the people that are walking all these streets in stilts. >> i mean, like you said, they are all smiling and i absolutely love the fact that this rain is not dampening their spirits, as we have been saying. so a little shout out to those guys, but also a shout out to all these people in the

crowd who are braving the weather. tell me where you're from. what's your name? happy thanksgiving my name is sawyer. >> my fiancee's name is kimberly. we're from orange county, california. we've been here since probably 4 a.m., 415. >> and that's why you have a front row seat to the best parade ever. tell me what are you excited? so far, we've seen a lot of good things go by. what are you most excited about? how are you enjoying it? >> so i'm excited personally for spider-man, since i've been watching that as a kid. >> or stewie, if stewie comes to family guy, my family will know i'm obsessed with family guy i love it. >> you've done your research on this parade. you have your eye out. you know we're going to get you a good picture with spider-man. i am going to promise you that. >> spongebob that is coming up spongebob is coming down. >> that's right. all right, well, enjoy the rest of the parade, guys. it's also it's so exciting. like they just said, spongebob is making its way down. and then after that i can see down this avenue and its dora the explorer. and then i think it might be smokey the bear. so we got some good
6:09 am
floats coming our way. guys we sure do. >> spongebob there. i believe gary is on his back, you know? >> fun fact spongebob the first ever square balloon in the macy's thanksgiving day parade. >> i love a fun fact. >> yeah, been studying for weeks to bone up on that kind of information. all right, let's get out to harry enten, who is on the parade route. hello, harry oh shalom, my dear friend. >> mr. berman. look, we got a marching band. we've got a marching band coming down the street, and we've got crowds lined up and down here on central park south. if you aren't into parades, well, get in the mood, because i'm in the parades and you should be too look, it's been raining all morning that's no big surprise but i want to just point out historically, we've had much worse weather on thanksgiving. right. it's not freezing cold. i brought my anemometer with me, my homemade anemometer, because i of course went to
6:10 am
weather camp back in the day. and i can tell you right now it's 46.7 degrees on the street. it didn't even reach the 30s back in 2018. we don't have snow like we had back in 1989, when four inches of snow fell. we don't have gusty winds. i'm looking at the anemometer right now. >> it's zero miles per hour, so it's not like the early 70s when we had a day when the winds were gusting upwards of 63mph. >> so the bottom line is this if you are not in a parade this is the type of thing that should get you in a parade, because it's just so fantastic. we've had all those great balloons, those giant balloons. many came by, which was great. we have the marching band that's just leaving us now, and i think in the distance i see my dear favorite ronald mcdonald coming down the street. i love ronald i love the ronald mcdonald playhouse. i just love it all guys the
6:11 am
bottom line is this i have never been to a parade before this day, but on this particular day i am part of the thanksgiving day parade here in new york city. i am just ecstatic to be here. and right now the wind is now blowing at four miles per hour, but it ain't blowing me away. that's all i can say. back to you two lovely people good to know. >> learn learn some fun facts about harry. this is his first ever parade. i find that surprising and weather camp and homemade anemometer. >> i think the only thing nerdier here could have said is if he had a, you know, crafted his own lightsaber at home. >> i think he's saving that for the next hour. >> yes there, dora the explorer. i love right there. >> dora dora. dora. >> no, no please keep going. >> my older son loved dora back in the day. an all new though dora for 2020 for her sidekick boots. also back. back after 15 years. >> there's a little break and she doesn't go anywhere without her map or her backpack. you

can see it right there. there's the backpack. love it. all right. chef and author aaron french found a passion for cooking early in life. and today she is the proud owner of the acclaimed lost kitchen restaurant in freedom, maine. she also has a hit tv show also named the lost kitchen streaming on max. watch this i love the way your brain works. >> first avocado i've ever picked this is about to get crazy up here new orleans never been there before. >> i can't wait. welcome to houston we're going to idaho. >> holy moly. >> you have to hit california arizona. kentucky. >> welcome to oregon. we did it! >> this is incredible. my intention here is just to soak in as much as i can in this off season and go home
6:13 am
and feel ready to roll and it is great to have aaron french with us now here to help us make a special treat for the thanksgiving table. >> aaron, welcome. happy thanksgiving it's so great to have you with us hi. >> good morning happy thanksgiving what are you making all right. so we are making a crispy potato and shallot pie. so if you haven't started your thanksgiving prep it's not too late. you can still make this pie. and we're starting with mashed potatoes and if you haven't made your potatoes yet we've got a couple of tricks to tell you how to make great mashed potatoes. first thing is, use a food mill because you're using potatoes right now that were grown in the summer in the fall, they're going to be a little starchier and this is going to keep them from getting really kind of, you know, gluey, which is not what you want on thanksgiving day. um the second trick is going to be steeping cream. you can get so much flavor in this. and i just brought the cream to a slight boil and then put in some thyme and some bay leaf
6:14 am
and then we're going to put in so much butter that it's obscene, but you can get away with it this time of year, right. or any time of year. i'm not sure. but we're going to get away with it today for sure. so lots of butter lots of the steeped cream for so, so much flavor and then we have these gorgeous potatoes so the first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to put the potatoes down in a layer here in a pie dish. and this is going to be our baked pie. and we're going to work on the center, which is kind of the fun part of this pie so we have shallots that we're cooking nice and slow. and we want them to get nice and caramelized. add a little butter, let them do their thing and in the meantime i'm going to cook some grapes because grapes are going to be like this really kind of fun filling in the center of it all, a little bit different than cranberries. and why not? so grapes, just a saute. you don't want to totally cook them down. you want them to be just
6:15 am
nice and tender and still hold their shape a bit of fresh thyme, lots of fresh garlic and then really nice flavor of some fresh orange zest. so you want to get that all in the pan. saute that up. and it's just like making the kitchen smell so delicious right now. so they really just need a couple of seconds in there just to kind of make them pop. and then we start making the full pie. so we've got those beautiful shallots that are nice and caramelized now we're going to just top them on top of those mashed potatoes. with all that flavor then we're going to add on those beautiful grapes and then we put the top layer on which is the potato. and we're just going to finish that off. we're going to make this really really pretty on top. and we're going to pop it in the oven. we're going to let it cook for about 25 minutes or so, just until the edges are nice and bubbly and then about five minutes before this pie
6:16 am
comes out of the oven, i'm going to top it with some of those crispy shallots that we all know and love. and that's going to make that kind of like crispy, delicious topping so we've got all of this flavor it'll be nice and comforting and then the crispy shallots on the top. we'll pop it in the oven. we'll get it ready. and then in 25 minutes we're going to have the perfect dish. this is also really good the day after thanksgiving. if you want to put turkey in it and use your leftovers and it's really also great to bring to a friends house like i'm going to friendsgiving. this is what i'm bringing because i can just pop it in the oven there. it'll be bubbly it'll be toasty and delicious oh, i can't wait! >> erin. we love that. we're going to check back in with you at the end of the show to see how it turns out. i think i'd like to go to that friendsgiving with you though. >> oh my god, that looks so good in the dish of butter. she had me at the dish of butter. no amount is too much on thanksgiving for that. i think we have some live pictures to show you from philadelphia right now. we've been watching the parade down there the longest. the oldest thanksgiving parade and there

7:11 am
this thanksgiving? >> my thing is, don't ever give up on yourself. i'm going to say it on national tv right now. i have obsessive compulsive disorder depression, anxiety. i got you know, i knew that since i was a young person and young person saying that in my late teenage years and i have tremendous sisters that always stood by me, older sisters that gave me the courage to go out, go seek help and not feel so crazy and out of place. and once you realize that you don't feel so intimidated anymore. and i was bullied as a kid and stuff like that. but you can change that into a positive and that's what i'm thankful for also, is the people in my life who have done that for me all right. >> john vincent, you have a beautiful voice a beautiful story. we're so glad to have you. this morning. thank you so much for being with us happy thanksgiving everybody, john. thank you. all right john, erika, back to you guys all right. >> that was great whitney. really appreciate it. thank you. things really kicking off. getting going in houston i think we got a little live music down there. >> let's listen in houston

7:14 am
a foot of snow before the day is done. today, across the rest of the country, one of the other concerns is going to be the temperatures dropping. not too bad for today, but the bottom really drops out once we get into friday and especially saturday and sunday across the eastern half of the country, as those temperatures begin to drop back to maybe more, what we would feel like in december in january, rather than in november. but again, the rest of the country, if you live in the central us guys or you live in the west, much nicer travel conditions if you've got some last minute or even some local travel to do for the holiday, you should be in much better shape than those folks a little bit closer to the east coast is right there. >> all right meteorologist allison chinchar, we appreciate it. and i love the turkey earrings. by the way, one of my cousins just texted me. >> she loves earrings. we've been hearing from people around the country about the turkey earrings all right thanksgiving in america it is fully underway. we are on the parade route in new york. you can see some of the bands going by

7:25 am
individuals that are part of the rodeo. now this is wendy louis armstrong and her brother vernon. now when i read your bios, i was so moved by the contributions that your father has given to the livestock show and rodeo. i am so sorry about his passing. and i wanted to ask you how special is it for you to be here, to be a part of the rodeo and to, in essence, follow in your father's footsteps? >> well i will tell you, the rodeo is a family affair. and taking on the realms of my dad and the work that he did was definitely important to me and my family. my brother also decided that he wanted to be a part of the committee, and a lot of my family is a part of the committee. it is 35,000 volunteers and i would say a good number of us are family volunteers because we believe that the rodeo is a big part of the city of houston, and we want to give back to our community. so it's all about the rodeo. and i will say, my
7:26 am
dad probably didn't think i was going to make it this far in the rodeo, so i'm very blessed and lucky to be a part of this amazing organization and all the things that we do for our great city. >> one of the other things that stands out about the houston livestock show and rodeo is how much it gives back to education. now, vernon, you can tell us about that. you received a scholarship. millions of dollars have been given to students. tell us about how special that is and how it changed your life of course. >> so the rodeo is houston livestock show and rodeo is a really good foundation for the community and for me. and it says they help pay it forward and giving me the opportunity to actuallfor education. and so my family wouldn't have any financial burden. so i lost my father when i was 16 years old. and i have a twin brother here. my older sister. so the rodeo has done a really good job to making sure my life and my family life, and as well as the whole community is all involved financially. thank you so much for sharing that. >> and i think we can all relate to being around the thanksgiving day, having a meal and some of those chairs being empty because our loved ones

7:41 am
they were one of the first performers today. you got out here at 4:00 in the morning. tell us a little bit about your performance today what did you guys perform and what does it mean? >> so our region was performed from the state of veracruz. we wanted to showcase a little bit of the mexico's culture with the vibrancy of the costumes, the tradition and the footwork that entails it. and we wanted to portray a familiar performance with a very well known song, which is la bamba and it's something that encompasses the whole world. it's a very world recognized song, and we wanted to portray it here today, to share it with all the other cultures. >> how long did it take you guys to perform that dance, learn that dance, and to be prepared for today's parade? >> so we usually prepare about six months in advance for the thanksgiving parade and so our performance today was prepared about six, seven months in advance. we have a teacher who helped us and collaborated with us from the state of veracruz she's actually from jalapa, veracruz, and she was able to collaborate with us to perform today's events. >> what makes the chicago parade so special is all of the

different cultures that are represented today. what does it mean for you to be able to be here and represent that vibrant mexican culture? this morning? >> for me, it's a very proud moment. i grew up in chicago in the hermosa neighborhood and logan square and to be able to be part of this tradition just makes it even even better. and not only that, i'm able to share the culture with everybody that's here. we see a lot of latino hispanic participants now and also a lot of visitors and a lot of people from out of state, and we want to share our culture that has been embedded. it has been a big part of chicago's life as well. >> sonia you had how many dancers today yeah. walk me through again. just your organization. how many dancers you guys had out here. >> we had 28 dancers performing today yes. >> and they're from all backgrounds. all different. different experience levels, right? yes. >> they're all from different backgrounds. most of them are residents from the from chicago and the surrounding suburbs and all of them are students. so we wanted to showcase this and give the opportunity to all of our students. we have middle aged high school and college

age students here for people who are not from chicago. >> what do you what what do you want them to know about the vibrant mexican culture here in the city of chicago is a part of cultures, and i think the the vibrancy is demonstrated even more with all the culture that we have, not only in our food, but our traditions and the folklore that we're able to to show here in chicago encompasses all of that with not only hispanic traditions, but also all of the other cultures that reside here. >> we have a lot of neighborhoods, um, we have little village. we have chinatown. um, we have ukrainian village, and we have a lot of that represented a lot of that culture represented in chicago. and i think it's what makes up chicago and the beautiful culture that surrounds all of it. >> claudia gutierrez, thank you so much. it is such a pleasure to meet you. thank you so much. >> thank you for having us. >> okay. all right. thank you. you too. you guys, again, that is just one of the many amazing performers we're bringing you more of those performers later today. but for now, john and
