it's friday, november 29th, right now on cnn this morning, thanksgiving threat for democratic lawmakers targeted by bomb threats while celebrating the holiday at home with their families. >> plus the war on women. >> we may have a few people on the top that are woke, and we're going to get rid of them so fast your head's going to explode. >> major retailers scaling back their dei programs to avoid the wrath of the president elect and we will rebuild notre dame even more beautiful cathedral comeback. five years after a fire ravaged notre dame, the iconic jewel is rebuilt and ready to reopen good morning it's 5 a.m. here on the east coast. here's a live look from new york at the
2:02 am
statue of liberty. thanks for joining us. this day after thanksgiving i'm audie cornish in for kasie hunt. it's wonderful to have you with us now we're going to talk about some pretty serious news to start this morning, because multiple democratic members of connecticut's delegation say they were the target of bomb threats it happened yesterday while they were home celebrating with their families law enforcement determined there was no evidence of any bombs and members report their families are safe. one of the threats was made against congressman jim himes. he's the ranking democrat on the house intelligence committee. himes said in a statement, quote, there is no place for political violence in this country, and i hope that we may all continue through the holiday season with peace and civility. yesterday's flurry of incidents well, they come just a day after several of donald trump's administration picks were also targeted with similar threats. former fbi director and cnn contributor andrew
2:03 am
mccabe says he's not surprised by the threats, telling cnn earlier this week that they've become commonplace for individuals in high profile positions it presents the same challenge to law enforcement each time someone engages in it, they probably know 90% sure that these threats as they come in are worthless. >> they are hoax. there's nothing to them but they can't take the risk of not responding on the off chance that one real threat gets through. >> okay, we're going to flesh this out and some other headlines out of washington with bloomberg news, white house reporter josh wingrove and congressional reporter for the hill, michael schnell. so first, i want to start with you, michael. it feels like lately this is kind of a i don't know, the cost of doing business. if you want to be a lawmaker. now, if you are in public life, do you see this as part of just the political atmosphere now? >> i think that's definitely part of it, audie. >> and look over the past several months, years, we have
2:04 am
seen this steady rise in threats against lawmakers. >> u.s. capitol police puts out the statistics for every year. so i'm curious to see what the numbers look like in 2024. >> but we have seen increases in that number in regards to threats against lawmakers. >> and that's led to a flurry of discussion on capitol hill about security for sitting lawmakers. it is a discussion that we have seen. >> i suspect that we will see it crop up again next week when lawmakers return to capitol hill and react to these threats and you know, these bomb threats made not just against the connecticut democrats, but also as you mentioned, some of president-elect trump's picks for his cabinet. i do think part of it is that we're in a very polarized environment right now. the partisanship of politics has reached an all time high in a lot of ways, and we're seeing the residual effects of that, which appears to unfortunately, be these these rising threats against lawmakers. >> one more thing i want to ask you. at one point, there was talk of raising funds to improve security or kind of making more resources
2:05 am
available. did that ever happen? >> yeah there were some different programs that were put in place in some different changes to the rules that were put in place in terms of lawmakers getting access to resources and funds for security. this particularly cropped up after the the the attack on paul pelosi, the husband of former speaker nancy pelosi. that individual of course, went through the legal process prosecuted for that, for that incident. after that we did see some more funds open up for lawmakers on capitol hill. but i suspect that will continue to hear this conversation. and have lawmakers look for more resources and more funds because, again, we are still seeing these flurry of threats. >> josh, i want to move to you and talk also about transition and the sort of transition going on at the white house, what have you learned so far about how the trump team is thinking about ethics? this has come up in terms of some of the conversations with departments,
2:06 am
where you have to kind of sign a pledge to say, we're going to follow this rule or that rule. what can you tell us hey, there good morning, and thank you for having me and apologies for being at a hotel room in palm beach. >> this is the life of following trump right now. so, i mean, that's a bit of a flex, but i appreciate that. well, i wouldn't go that far. i wouldn't go that far anyway. but yes these those ethics agreements were finally signed between the transition and the biden administration. there have been a lot of consternation about whether and how those would come through. there's still some questions and doubt hanging over the process. trump has largely rejected a lot of the conventional transition resources or the playbook. you might call it that. previous transitions have had, and we're sort of in uncharted territory a little bit on how this is all going to shake out. uh, you know it's just kind of hanging in the air one thing that we do know is that going forward, there will be more of this formal sharing that hadn't been
2:07 am
allowed to happen in the previous few weeks which the administration had sort of been sending alarm bells about and so maybe that will continue to have sort of a more smooth process. and we'll see in the meantime, also, trump is continuing to sort of roll out his announcements and nominations here we had a flurry of them before the holiday from here in palm beach. some, uh sort of, you know, tear into the next tier after he sort of rounded out his cabinet, we saw, for instance national economic council director a u.s. trade representative pick. and so we're going to continue to see that trickle out here, moving into the sort of deputy secretary level as well, in the coming week or two. >> i can't help but get back to the name. people are so focused on which is elon musk he's been talking on the campaign trail, of course, about his department of government efficiency that he would kind of co-chair with vivek ramaswamy. here's what he was saying on the campaign trail we set up doge. >> yes. how much do you think
2:08 am
we can rip out of this wasted $6.5 trillion? harris, biden budget? >> well, i think we can do at least 2 trillion. >> yeah uh, josh, can you talk a little bit about i don't know how easy that might be because we're hearing it's more complicated than people might think it's a huge number. it's a huge number. and if it got anywhere near that, it would fundamentally reshape the american government. one thing that musk has talked about is deleting entire agencies, like for instance, this week, the consumer financial protection bureau just sort of getting rid of it altogether. but even if they did things like that, they would still have to go a lot farther in direct payments, direct transfers, medicaid and medicare, potentially social security potentially to get to that kind of number if in fact, they are still seeking that kind of number. but musk continues to have tremendous access to the president. he's
2:09 am
consistently, you know, hanging around mar-a-lago, showing up in photos. he's really influential person in trump's orbit right now he's not the only one. we had a surprise visit by mark zuckerberg, the meta executive, and other prominent american billionaire who was spotted at mar-a-lago the day before thanksgiving uh, for meetings there, had dinner with trump. and so he continues to sort of have direct access to some of these major figures. and we'll see where musk's influence goes. but we're you talk about i talked about uncharted territory in my last answer. i mean, this is just almost a symbiotic sort of, uh relationship staff level type of relationship between the president elect and mr. musk, who, of course, through his businesses has many ties with government connections with government and with spacex. for instance so this is just a quite the setup. as you can see where we're going. i don't even know how to describe it beyond that, truly. but they are preparing the preparing the cut for sure josh wingrove thank

2:16 am
it's actually going to continue being rebuilt until 2030, audie, and it gives you an idea of the scale of the task. >> now, i'm standing at the back of the cathedral. now, you can still see there's so much scaffolding on it right. what's extraordinary is to consider that you played that moment when the french president had some had suggested in a slightly foolhardy way, suggested that it would take five years. it took them two years just to secure the structure. that's how fragile it had been after the fire of 2019. you'll remember those flames coming out of the top. the spire collapsing, the crowds gasping, the fears about one of the towers and whether they would hold at all. this had been an extremely damaging fire that raged for many hours before firefighters were able to bring it back under control, so the fear had been even in the months, and the couple of years that had followed the fire, whether the structure would hold either in part or entirely. so the first thing was to consolidate it to large wooden belts were put around the flying buttresses the nave,
2:17 am
and then the reconstruction proper could start when they were sure that the structure itself would hold. and what you're seeing today with that visit by the french president, this is his seventh but ultimate visited the construction site ahead of the grand opening that will take place next week. audie, this is an opportunity for parisians, but also the world to have a look at what that restoration has brought inside. and the images are quite extraordinary. it had been for anyone who can remember it before, five years ago, quite dark inside no longer there is. it is much cleaner, of course, than it was. and what they did, having taken the original decision that they would rebuild it exactly as it was, rather than try something new it took 2000 men and women over those five years to get in there with extraordinarily specialized skills gilders, woodworkers stonemasons to get in there and restore that intricacy to the details of notre dame. within that very vast scale, that it's famous for. it is, of course, the world's most famous gothic
2:18 am
cathedral, and built, as you mentioned, over 900 years ago. now restored to its former glory. and these are some of the first images of the inside of that cathedral so carefully lovingly restored. and again many had thought that it simply couldn't be done. audie, one last thing i'd like to point out is the amount of money that was raised for this restoration project. 340,000 individual donors from 150 different countries managed to raise nearly $900 million. and i think that speaks to the place that this cathedral has in the hearts of so many around the world. audie notre dame cathedral. >> melissa bell thank you so much. it's incredible to see now, still to come on cnn this morning, tech companies are now on notice following australia's passage of landmark legislation banning social media for kids under the age of 16. plus trump's win prompting some companies to roll back diversity initiatives

begin to shift over the next 12 to 24 hours, could be looking at some pretty substantial snow amounts. so you've got a lot of these winter weather alerts in place just for that very reason, especially this green, the teal color that you see here, those are lake effect specific snow warnings indicating just how much snow is expected to fall. you see some of these dark pink colors here where you could be looking at more than 2 to 3ft total of snow. now, granted that's going to be a very narrow path for some of these areas because it has to line up just right with lake effect snow. but yes, for the communities that are in it, they are going to be very hard hit. as for the rest of the country today, especially if you are traveling by the air, we're not expecting too many issues whatsoever. most of these airports expected to have pretty much everything on time, at least from a weather standpoint. but after today, you are really going to start to see the bottom dropping out in terms of temperatures especially for the eastern half of the country but even southeast, where we've got some freeze alerts in place for as areas even as far south as

reevaluating programs that assist minority owned suppliers, and is winding down its center for racial equity, a nonprofit. walmart has set up to address racism in society. this is a big deal because corporations seem to be going in this direction in addition to walmart, major american companies like lowe's, ford harley-davidson and john deere are scaling back their dei programs and their support for pride marches and lgbtq events. many companies had embraced dei following the murder of george floyd and the black lives matter protests in 2020. >> i think the pendulum might have swung fair a fair bit towards dei after the george floyd situation and i think it started to swing back. >> one possible reason for that president elect donald trump repeatedly blasting dei on the campaign trail. we're not going to be woke. and trump nominating cabinet members like defense secretary nominee pete hegseth, who has said woke

2:35 am
affect a major american corporation last year, after bud light featured a transgender actress and influencer in a promotion, conservatives called for a boycott of the brand and musician kid rock posted a video of himself shooting at a stack of bud light cases. >> i thought that the bud light effort was really very problematic because it was seen as a deep insult to their base, even though it was not intended that way. >> by most accounts, the activist robby starbuck is nowhere near finished with his campaign against dei initiatives. according to usa today. starbucks says he's preparing a new list of companies to target for the holiday season, declaring that his side is now winning the battle of public opinion on this issue. brian todd, cnn washington. >> okay we're going to talk a little bit more about this with cheyenne daniels. race and politics reporter for the hill. so cheyenne, i want to talk to you first about this rollback. yes, we're looking at walmart. brian was talking
2:36 am
about several other companies. are they pulling back from what was called esg? right. environmental, social and governance kind of umbrella of values that corporations were leaning into. are they done with all of that or just the stuff being boycotted? >> you know, it's really interesting what we're seeing is them saying, you know we're no longer going to engage in phrasing of things such as lgbtq wording. we're no longer going to engage in, as you see with walmart saying, we want to try to find ways to give, not necessarily preference, but ensure that we're opening the doors to those who maybe have been historically left out, such as predominantly black and brown. and whether that's employees or their suppliers. so we're not hearing just yet anything else, but really that focus on on what you would consider people of color and perhaps the lgbtq community. >> now, as we were talking about earlier, obviously corporations leaned super hard into issues of diversity after the death of george floyd. probably more than anyone even asked for with the black
2:37 am
squares and all these things with their hr departments. so is there a sense that they're responding to politics, or are they also just as corporations getting frustrated with the management of these issues? because we heard a lot about being mad at employees and things like that, who are bringing this up? >> yeah, it's interesting because as you pointed out, i think some of it folks were like, we didn't ask for that, right? and then there were some concerns, you know, is this all performative? what are you actually going to do to indicate that you want to see changes in in our society, in our culture? and now that seems to be stepping back right and a lot of it folks are saying has to do with, particularly after we saw the supreme court's decision on affirmative action with concerns over what does that mean for corporate america? how do we then get to be able to say things like, we want to make sure we are prioritizing candidates of different, diverse backgrounds without somehow overstepping. now, what the supreme court has decided. so there's a lot of confusion that i'm hearing from sources that i've talked to where they're saying corporations just don't know what is. and isn't allowed

anymore, and they don't want to risk potential lawsuits frank larose. >> so it's a perfect storm of things. we mentioned starbucks. there's also christopher rufo in florida and of course, ron desantis spent all of his primary trying to be the anti-woke candidate. but it sounds like you have this conservative movement happening at the same time that corporations are skittish. >> yes, exactly. and i think especially some of the corporations that we've seen, when you think about something, a corporation like harley-davidson, you think about lowe's and they're saying we're trying to give our consumer base what they want. we're trying to make sure they don't want to lose their customers at the end of the day. right and so when when you're seeing so much backlash or pushback from conservative consumers who are saying, i won't shop here anymore. that's a fine line to walk. i think as a corporation, to say, do we risk losing those customers or do we try to move forward and see what happens? >> well, cheyenne daniels i know we're going to hear about this more as elon musk is involved with the government and vivek ramaswamy, they've talked a lot about this, but i

look at him oh man try there was obviously a fight between a guy and a girl over a over a barbie doll and the girl sucked the guy in the face just to get the barbie okay, that is a look back at some black friday chaos from about a decade ago. >> thanksgiving 2014. and it's the sort of image that traditionally we think of when it comes to black friday shoppers busting through the doors, fighting crowds, sometimes each other basically to get a deal at the start of the holiday shopping season now, of course, today things are very different. the new york times recently asked shoppers about what they thought of this day now and quote many lamented that it no longer felt like a unique shopping event and that sales often continued into the
2:45 am
new year. others suggested supporting small businesses rather than big box retailers, whether they offered sales or not, or avoiding shopping altogether in participating in buy nothing day now, this day and weekend is still huge for retailers according to the national retail federation, more than 183 million people are expected to start their shopping during this five day weekend. and of course a bunch of them will start today. you know another sign of the changing habits only about 65% of black friday shoppers are even planning to go in person. joining me now to talk about the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season is claire tassin, retail and e-commerce analyst at retail and e-commerce analyst at morning consult. claire good morning. >> good morning. >> so obviously we alluded to this towards the end. there's cyber monday there's small business saturday there's buy nothing day obviously people got burnt out over time. so
2:46 am
what does this spending actually look like now we still see an enormous amount of consumer spending over the next few days. >> overall, the holiday season we're predicting to see about a 3.5% spending increase over last year. >> and a lot of that spending will be concentrated around what we call the big five. so starting today, over the next five days, from black friday to cyber monday, now you made a good point. retailers have sort of been stretching the boundaries of what black friday really means. i've seen black friday promotional language as early as october, so what? it's really a signal to consumers that these are some of the best deals that will be on offer. but it's no longer just one day. >> is it also partly because, i mean, we've been talking about affordability, right? during the election year, you have retailers engaging in what they call dynamic pricing. i mean, what does a sale even mean? and do people actually feel like they're getting a deal? sure.
2:47 am
>> so we have seen across the year retailers trying to pull customers back into their doors by reducing prices on their merchandise store wide that's been a really important to consumers this year for obvious reasons so these big offers and discounts should be some of the deepest discounts that we see this year. and that is still really attractive to consumers. but what i think is really interesting and important to remember is that when i look at who's actually shopping on black friday and who's making some of these impulse purchases, it does tend to be wealthier people who are able to sort of let the retailers tell them what to buy, rather than those who have to watch their budgets more closely, who are actually less likely to shop today to be able to take advantage of these deals. >> what about debt? what are people willing to go into debt for when it comes to holiday season yeah. >> so in a recent survey at morning consult, we saw that 20% of consumers said they planned to take on debt that's
2:48 am
most of that is they said would be able to be paid off within 1 or 2 billing cycles. a few did say that they would plan to stretch it out longer than that. so that is part of how people will stretch their cash flow over the next couple of months to pay back the credit card bills that they'll incur. we also, of course, see the increasing importance of buy now, pay later loans that are so common in the retail industry now to help people stretch their dollars further. and those often don't have interest associated with the payments and with where credit card interest rates are right now that can be a really attractive option as long as consumers are sure that they can pay them off on time. >> do you have any other sense of what kind of trends are basically people are responding to when it comes to their budget or where they when it comes to this kind of spending? >> sure so we generally see that people want to preserve their holiday spending, especially when it comes to gifts and celebrations. having friends and family over, you know, making all of your favorite holiday food and beverages. so that tends to be where people are really
2:49 am
prioritizing their spending and that doesn't have to be particularly expensive. that's where consumers also rated those items as pretty high on the affordability scale in some of our survey work. so what we find is that people still want to spend money this holiday season because they want to preserve those traditions. they want to be generous with their friends and family, and they just they want to enjoy this special feeling this time of year i can understand that, claire tassin, thank you so much thank you. >> we're going to turn now to sports of course, on a thanksgiving filled with football. the night ended with a dominant performance by the green bay packers and a win over the miami dolphins. cnn's sports anchor amanda davis joins me now with this morning's bleacher report. >> good morning, audie. i mean, is it fair to say dolphins don't really do very well in the cold? the temperature at kickoff in green bay was 27 degrees in miami. looked like fish out of water all night. i know we're talking about mammals and dolphins. anyway, packers wide receiver jayden

reed was red hot, scoring two touchdowns in the first half as green bay jumped out to a 24 to 3 lead whilst their defense got after miami quarterback tua tagovailoa sacking him five times. tua finished with over 350 yards passing and two touchdowns, but most of that came too little, too late as green bay takes it 30 points to 17. meanwhile, for the first time since last december, the dallas cowboys have won a game at home. check out the play by demarvin overshown in the second quarter, tipping the ball to himself and taking it back. the other way for his first career touchdown. a happy thanksgiving for him and running back rico dowdle had a stellar day rushing for a career best 112 yards and a touchdown in the third to put the cowboys up by 17. they went on to win 27 points to 20. the detroit lions hadn't won a
2:51 am
thanksgiving game since 2016. what a way for them to do it after something of a mind boggling end to their game against the chicago bears. chicago was trailing by three points with 36 seconds to go. when caleb williams gets sacked on second down at detroit's 41 yard line, putting them out of range for a field goal 32 seconds left and taking the bears have a time out but coach matt eberflus doesn't use it. then, rolling ahead when the ball is finally snapped, there are just six seconds on the clock. williams throws up a prayer. it falls harmlessly to the ground with zeros on the clock detroit escaped 23 to 20 to improve to a league best 11 and one for chicago. more head scratching and heartbreak. six straight losses now, four of those by three points or less. afterwards, the coach defended his decision. >> it is over. >> so to me it's a i think we handled it the right way. i do believe that, you know, he's
