donald trump is taking the show on the road with his second inauguration. >> still weeks away. he's headed to france this weekend for the grand reopening of the notre dame cathedral in paris. five years after that horrible fire, president. french president emmanuel macron extended the invitation to this. what is going to be a star studded vip event? and also in what will be trump's first foreign trip since winning the election. macron's invite is also the latest move by foreign leaders especially european powers trying to position themselves as trump's go to european ally if they're making nice on one hand, on the other hand, donald trump is very clearly trying to put them all on notice with his trade war threats, his nato hesitancy, his isolationist tendencies when it comes to ukraine. donald trump isn't waiting to reenter the oval office to jump back into foreign policy. overnight, he laid down another new red line, warning that there will be hell to pay in the middle east if hamas does not release hostages
4:03 am
from gaza before inauguration day. let's start with cnn's steve contorno. he's joining us now tracking all of it for us. steve, what is donald trump saying about this trip yeah, he last night on truthsocial, donald trump announced for the first time that he intends to take up macron's offer to attend the ceremony in paris. >> he said that macron has, quote restored or done a wonderful job ensuring that notre dame has been restored to its full level of glory and even more so, that trumpian flare on on his truth. social posts. there and as you mentioned, this is coming at the at the end of a of a three week stretch where trump has already inserted himself back into foreign policy. to really unparalleled degree, he has threatened canada and mexico with tariffs. he has met with canadian prime minister justin trudeau at mar-a-lago to discuss that threat. he has spoken to the mexican president about closing the border. he has spoken with
4:04 am
ukrainian president zelenskyy. zelenskyy. he has said there would be, quote, hell to pay if hostages in gaza are not released. he has hosted the argentinian president at mar-a-lago and he has threatened 100% tariff on a group of countries, including russia and china, if they start to try to create a currency to rival the u.s. dollar. so just a really unprecedented step back out onto the world stage for donald trump. and now this first foreign trip will really be the icing on the cake. >> and donald trump is also weighing in once again on the sale of u.s. steel, saying he's intending to block it. what's what's going on here exactly? >> another issue that donald trump believes he can fix with tariffs. he wrote on truth social. that thing uh, that sorry through a series of tax incentives and tariffs, we will make u.s. steel strong and great again. and it will happen fast and then he says as
4:05 am
president, he will block the sale of u.s. steel to a japanese company. it is worth noting that joe biden, president joe biden also opposed the sale of of u.s. steel to a foreign country and vice president harris, during the campaign opposed it as well. so there was agreement from both the democratic and republican presidential nominees on this issue, and trump promising to make good on his vow to block the deal once he gets into office kate. >> all right, steve, thank you so much. good to see you, john. >> all right. happening now. well, capitol hill this morning where president elect trump's embattled defense pick, pete hegseth, will meet with at least one republican senator who wants to ask him about a new sexual misconduct allegation today. this, as some republicans seem to be warming to trump's desire to scrap fbi background checks altogether. let's get right to lauren fox, who is in washington for the latest on today's plans and specifically what hegseth has been doing.
4:06 am
>> yeah, i mean hegseth has really been blitzing capitol hill, trying to meet with as many lawmakers as possible as he tries to defend himself against some of these questions about his past actions. >> he has a really important meeting today on capitol hill with representative shelley moore capito. she is a republican woman from west virginia and we asked her last night about what she wanted to hear from hegseth and, you know, she said a lot of these issues, she expects are going to come up, that they're going to have the conversation about them. you know, when lawmakers get out of these meetings, it really depends on sort of how close they are with donald trump whether or not they talk about these meetings. but we heard yesterday from tommy tuberville. he came out and said he had a really strong meeting with pete hegseth. meanwhile, others are also expected to continue meeting with senators as part of their confirmation process, including tulsi gabbard as well as pam bondi are going to be on capitol hill this week, but there's really a mounting question right now that is happening where you have
4:07 am
republicans who are sort of torn about whether or not they need to see these fbi background checks as part of this vetting process. yesterday, i talked with senator susan collins of maine about kash patel whether or not she thought he was a good pick. this is what she said. she said, quote, i don't know, kash patel. i had heard his name, but i don't know his background and i'm going to have to do a lot of work before reaching a decision on him. and she made clear that background checks should be a part of that vetting process then you had senator john thune, the incoming republican leader, saying this, quote my job is to make sure the nominees have a thorough, fair process and ultimately, you know, our members will decide historically, the best place to get this done has been through the fbi. thune said. now, there are others, like senator mike crapo, who is a republican who will lead the finance committee in the new year. he said. it's really up to the president to decide whether or not he needs those fbi checks. but obviously, senators have a lot of questions on some of these
4:08 am
nominees and their backgrounds and as thune said, the fbi background checks are traditionally the process to get that information. the most quickly to lawmakers jon. >> yeah, a lot of lawmakers have relied on it for a very long time. lauren fox thank you very much, kate. >> coming up for us, one of president biden's last international trips overshadowed by his decision to pardon his son. there's new reaction coming in this morning. we'll bring that to you. and also there's new information in this case of the hawaii woman who went missing after her flight landed in los angeles remember, her aunt came on to plead for anyone's help in trying to find her. well, police now say they have evidence that she's now left for mexico. police also say a shoplifter picked the worst possible time to go to work. if you will, when more than a dozen officers were already in the store for a shop with a cop event can't fool myself.

here in los angeles. she is seen first at a bookstore at the grove, and then she's at a lebron trial event at the nike store. she posted a photo from that event on her instagram account on that day. this again at the grove in central los angeles. and then we hear the last day that she's actually speaking to her family on november 11th. that's when we have some disturbing messages coming from kobayashi, where she says that deep hackers wiped her identity, that she was tricked into giving away all of her funds. this is the last day we hear from her, and now authorities are saying that just the next day she is seen at a greyhound station in los angeles. union station in downtown los angeles, and then takes public transportation down to the san ysidro border. and that's where they say they see the surveillance footage of her crossing over into mexico. i want you to hear the

loss compounded their grief immensely. we are also hearing that the family is disagreeing with the lapd assessment of the situation that she had missed her flight intentionally. they say that they have been kept in the dark about this situation and we spoke with them over the weekend to her sister, who said that she was frustrated with the way that this investigation was conducted. now, kate, we still haven't heard from the family since, and we're hoping to get more details as we hear more. >> absolutely thank you so much for that, julia coming up for us, president-elect donald trump has threatened to impose tariffs as high as 100% on some countries. he's also promised, as you know, mass deportations as soon as he takes office. so far, wall street isn't buying it. we have new reporting on that for you. and strong emotions were seen and heard in a south carolina courtroom for the trial of a drunk driver who killed a bride on her wedding night

4:23 am
will go negative under trump. and that's basically what would have to happen in order for him to keep his promise of deporting millions and millions and millions of undocumented people, the vast majority over 70%, say that immigration will still be above 500,000 per year under trump. for some context, pre-covid the pace was around 1 million per year. so again slower but not nearly as big of a crackdown as trump has promised. why is this well, goldman sachs economists say there's two big reasons. one, because there are legal limits and two, because there are logistical limits to executive action and those limits will likely slow down the pace of deportations. now, this will come as a relief to business owners who warn that deporting millions of people could starve them of workers. i mean undocumented people are a key part of this economy, right? they are cooking meals and
4:24 am
restaurants, building homes and they're picking crops on farms. the usda found that a plurality of crop farm workers in america, 41%, are unauthorized. and experts have warned that if you deport all of these crop workers, they're going to send grocery prices even higher. john, we should note, just because investors are saying that the immigration crackdown isn't going to live up to the hype doesn't mean they're right. but i do think this helps to explain why investors are basically shrugging off all these inflation warnings about the trump agenda they don't believe that mass deportations are going to happen. >> yeah, it's an interesting perspective. it is important as we go forward matt, what are these same types of people saying about elon musk, not elon musk in general, but elon musk's plans to slash government yeah, there's also some skepticism there. >> remember trump has tapped elon musk to lead doge the department of government efficiency and investors are expecting government spending to come down under trump. but again, not to the degree that elon musk has suggested. 42% of
4:25 am
investors actually expect that this musk led commission will only come up with insignificant or very modest spending cuts. contrast that with what elon musk promised in october during that madison square garden rally. take a listen we set up doge yes. >> how much do you think we can rip out of this wasted $6.5 trillion? >> harris, biden budget? >> well, i think we can do at least 2 trillion. >> yeah your money is being wasted. >> and the department of government efficiency is going to fix that we're going to get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook so musk their promised at least $2 trillion. >> that would be massive because the government budget is $6.5 trillion. so you're
4:26 am
talking about around a third. but investors think that's not going to happen. only 10% of investors polled by goldman sachs say that musk's commission will be able to cut more than $400 billion a year. of course, john, the problem is that so much government spending is tied up in areas that you really can't touch, right? you have to pay interest on governments, mountain of debt. you can't touch that. that's almost $1 trillion. you have defense spending. that's nearly $1 trillion. and then there's all those entitlement programs, social security medicaid, medicare that's $3 trillion there. all of this explains why former bush economist glenn hubbard said it's just mathematically impossible to find $2 trillion. so again investors think spending comes down. but probably not to the degree that musk has suggested yeah, we'll have to see what they come up with. >> also, how they explain the accounting, because you can do a lot of tricks in smoking. you can add things and claim things. we'll have to wait and see betty, thank you very much. all right. party girls and non party girls

equipment the support, uh and the, the focus that they deserve when they're out there fighting for our country that is motivating stuff. and so i just hope that more americans can hear about his vision for the military and to restore us to the greatest fighting force in the in the world. >> i want to talk about the house of representatives, if i can, for a moment. and the democrats who are running that caucus or want to, shall we say, going forward, the leadership team is in place with hakeem jeffries and katherine clark from massachusetts. but the chairs of the committees, there seems to be some infighting right now on judiciary. jamie raskin, who i guess is what 61 is trying to push out. jerry nadler, the current ranking member who is in his late 70s. i think we have pictures of these two fine men. we can show you what they look like. but what does this tell you about what's happening inside the democratic party in the house and what the need is
4:41 am
for maybe a younger batch of leaders there it's it's interesting that you think 61 is a new, younger batch of leadership. >> but i guess to me that feels very young all of a sudden right? so i think that, you know, i think that this is showing that the democrats are, are taking note of what happened in the election and realizing that maybe we need to have a new way forward and a new, different direction. i think that comes with a new, younger leadership. i was hoping that maybe 60 wasn't the new, younger leadership that we could go, you know, maybe into our 50s that might be might be helpful here. but i do think that democrats are taking note of what the country and what the electorate said on election day, and that is that they need to move towards the middle they need to be more moderate. they need to be a little bit more forward leaning. and so i think that maybe new, younger leadership might be more beneficial for us. i don't know if judiciary is the right place for it. i'm not exactly, you know i don't know the ins and outs of the judiciary committee on the house side. but i do think that the democrats are taking note and that you will see new leadership not only in the house but in the senate and also with the consultant class, with some of the you know, down ballot races that are going to be run for the midterms.
4:42 am
>> we'll talk a little bit more, though, when we talk about jamie raskin i know you don't want to get too deep into judiciary but the fact that he's 61, you don't think they're going far enough right now, or do you think they're not taking this as seriously as they need to? the message that the country was sending i think the democrats are still in the rebuilding phase. >> and it's sort of taking stock and looking internally. it's only been a couple of weeks since the election, so we will see how it moves forward. um, you know going forward. but i do think it is a positive sign that other people would like to take over leadership post and i think that is a good thing for the democratic party. >> may would you rather have jerry nadler or jamie raskin running or the democratic party and the judiciary committee as the ranking member i giving me quite the choice here, but i guess in judiciary is a pretty partisan place. >> they like to, you know, pick all the hot topics of the day and try and make viral clips and it seems like, you know, maybe jamie raskin will be able to make that viral clip. but i think that what the american people want is less
4:43 am
partisanship less trying to divide our country and more just letting the government work for us and when i see jamie raskin, i see somebody who was heavily involved in the russiagate lie someone who was part of both impeachments, someone who was heavily involved in the january 6th committee. and so it doesn't appear i mean, these are things that were very partisan that that did highly charge our country. and instead of that, what about somebody who actually speaks to the middle? what about somebody who really wants to build bridges and unify our country? that does not seem to be jamie raskin. so i will take neither as as my option picking option c. >> all right. well, megan hayes thank you very much for being with us. kate. >> i don't remember you giving an option i didn't, i didn't, but sometimes people go off script, you know? you know let's move on. the lake effect snow that has hammered some parts of the united states for days is beginning to ease today. some good news there. but the great lakes region is going to continue to see some
4:44 am
very dangerous winter weather as snow totals in some areas are approaching six feet, meteorologist derek van dam is tracking all of this for us. derek is more snow on the way yeah, we're going to have to keep the shovels out for those favored areas downwind of lake ontario, lake michigan lake erie, those lake effect snow belt areas. >> and this is what happens when we get too much snow too quickly. some of these trucks got stuck on railroad tracks, and unfortunately there was a collision between this truck and that passing railroad car. fortunately, the driver was able to get out unscathed. no injuries, but that just shows you the depth of the snow that's in some locations over five feet, approaching six feet, and some very localized areas. but here's the current situation current radar again, a few scattered snow showers right along i-90 this is impacting downwind locations. that's eastern portions of lake erie but also notice this into southwestern michigan. this is an area that caused some pileups on interstate 94 yesterday. and i want you to see that little curlicue within the snow band there that is
4:45 am
actually known as a vortex. so the difference between the wind over the lake and the wind over the land is causing that snow band kind of spiral in on itself. so all in all these snowfall totals, they're impressive. they've been record breaking daily snowfall totals for some locations but this is incredible. look at this coastline northwestern new york 65in of snow. that's nearly as tall as this. meteorologist so how much snow is still to come? just a few inches. again, those favored areas with lake effect snow bands. but look what happens as i advance this map into thursday and friday. we've got what is called an alberta clipper that is approaching alberta clipper named because of where it forms the province of alberta and canada, but a clipper because it moves very quickly across the great lakes. and you'll see that system as it traverses the great lakes from thursday into friday so what's going to happen? it's going to pick up the wind it is also going to drop temperatures. and it's also going to help bring in another round of lake enhanced snowfall. this system will be moving too quick. the winds will be too fast for this
4:46 am
snowfall event to be as impressive as what we saw last week, but still something to keep in mind dangerous low visibilities dangerous driving conditions, and some of those areas. check out these temperatures. there it is, chicago to cincinnati, new york city to dc. you're next friday. that's when you see temperatures bottom out where we are heading into winter. >> friends real quick. and your use of impressive. we need to discuss this afterwards impressive snow level. yes a lot, but i'd like to pretend i'm not impressed when it's that painful. i mean how what needs to be ten feet to be more impressive for this men thanks so much, derek. john. >> and then we'll have to be talking about multiples of derek van dam in terms of the height of the snowfall. this multiple derek van dams all right. this morning as soon as closing arguments wrap up, jury deliberations set to begin in the manslaughter trial of daniel penny who held a homeless man in a fatal chokehold who was accused of holding a homeless man in a fatal chokehold in our new york city subway. and this morning, the russian national, who flew as a stowaway on a flight from new york to paris, is set to

manslaughter trial of daniel penny. >> prosecutors are expected to wrap up their case today. and after that, his fate lies in the hands of the jury. penn is charged in the fatal chokehold death of jordan neely in an incident on a new york city subway train last year. if he is convicted on the second degree manslaughter charge, he could face up to 15 years in prison. now, in court yesterday, the defense wrapped their closing arguments, saying in part arguing that daniel penny put his own life at risk to protect other riders, also telling the jury that prosecutors this coming from the defense prosecutors are scapegoating this man here. the only guy who is brave enough to stand up when he was needed. the government wasn't there. the police weren't there when the people needed help danny was. and when he was the one who needed help, no one was there. joining us right now, trial and defense attorney misty marris and and the prosecution is now going to be picking up with their with their arguments, closing arguments today. but let's
4:53 am
stick on what we heard from the defense team yesterday. you heard that scapegoating argument that is part of their closing argument. they also made another argument. in closing, i want to read you a quote from it. misty that basically that penny's actions were justified because he was acting to protect other people. here's, here's what they told the jury. daniel penny was the one who moved to protect them why? because he had something the others didn't. something unique to him. his training. because danny acted to save those people. and there's no dispute that when danny acted, he didn't know whether jordan neely was armed. add it all together, misty. what do you make of the defense's closing argument well, so the defense was focused on exactly what they needed to be. >> so part of the defense is that it's a self-defense argument not just self-defense. for daniel penny self-defense of the others on that train. and part of that argument has to reflect what we know is going to be on that jury verdict sheet. first, was there an imminent threat? so the defense pointed to others on the train who had said that
4:54 am
they were fearful. then was penny's response justified? and proportionate to that threat and that's why we hear the defense talking about the fact that daniel penny stepped in when there was nobody else to do so and that his actions were justified because he did not know whether or not neely was going to get back up and go back on the offensive. now, couple that with another point that the defense pointed out that neely's death is the product of a broken system. that's a quote from the closing arguments. and they loop that back into the testimony because the final defense witness was a court clerk who referenced that. neely. there was actually an open bench warrant for his arrest. so essentially, the defense is arguing almost that the city, the city of new york really failed neely and that penny was there when the city of new york was not there when nobody was there to protect those other writers. so that's where the defense was focused, because that's the standard of the self-defense statute.
4:55 am
>> i see the prosecution again, closing continues with closing today. yesterday is part of it. they did concede that there was initial reason for penny to restrain neely, but then continuing with the argument that he took it too far, continuing the chokehold even after a reasonable person could see that the threat was over. what do you think of the prosecution's case and what they want to leave with the jury now so this was always going to be where the prosecution was focused, right from the get go. >> even the opening statements. kate the prosecutors had to concede that the initial restraint of neely was justified. and that's because there were many others on the train who said they were fearful it's a reasonable person. standard so if others were fearful, it's reasonable that penny would ultimately step in. but the issue is whether or not it was justified to hold neely down for that almost six minute time period,
4:56 am
and prosecutors focused on the fact that in less than a minute, the train pulled into the next station. most of the people got off the train. so basically, the threat at that point was over and that holding down neely for the remainder of that time was actually a failure on penny's part to recognize neely's humanity and that he needed protection as well. so that was a large part of the prosecution's argument, because the standard is reckless disregard for human life. now, the prosecutors pointed to daniel penny's interrogation video, which, by the way he was there voluntarily. so, so he spoke to police voluntarily, and he called neely a crackhead multiple times. so prosecutors are painting the picture that yes, daniel penny may have been justified at the get go, but at some point his conduct turned criminal. and the next part of this case it's going to be a large focus today. it's going to be the medical aspect, the medical examiner's determination that neely was killed by penny's chokehold and
4:57 am
his chokehold alone. no other causes. >> yeah. as the defense was trying to bring the other causes in into their case as well. misty, thank you so much for putting it all together. let's see what happens today and how quickly this then gets to the jury. really appreciate it, john this morning a south carolina woman who struck and killed a bride on her wedding night while driving drunk is beginning a 25 year prison sentence through tears, the bride's family, including her father, gave emotional statements in court for the rest of my life, i'm going to hate you and when i arrive in hell and you come there, i'll open the door for you all right. >> with us now, cnn's ryan young. ryan, you've been covering this. what's the latest there? >> yeah. >> john, this was hard to watch. >> we watched for over 45 minutes as this family walked up there to talk about the loss of a loved one, samantha miller, who was lost after this wedding that took place back in april of 2023. but as you can

therapy right now but as you can understand, this has been a toll on this family. as we watched over and over now jamie lee komoroski. she got 25 years. she got the maximum sentence. court was supposed to start today. she also looked at the judge and the family and she gave a tearful apology in court yesterday as well this is the worst decision i have ever made in my life and it has affected the lives of so many first and foremost, i want to address all the victims of the accident i caused they have truly and deeply sorry. >> i have john a pretty powerful moment when she turns to that family she looks at them. >> but obviously you heard the father say he's going to be waiting for the gates of hell to open the door for. you can understand that raw emotion. there's been a long time since we've seen a case this powerful in terms of what they were expressing in court yesterday. now it moves on. she faces 25 years getting that

maximum sentence. >> john ryan young, what a tragedy. thank you so much for that all right. food news. this morning. the distribution of raw milk products from the brand raw farm has been suspended in california after the bird flu virus was found in milk samples. health officials say the milk that was tested was not released to the to the stores. excuse me. so this morning, shoplifting gone bad or wrong or just plain stupid? this happened during an event for actual police officers. a literal shop with a cop event for kids. someone chose that moment to try to steal stuff we were able to see on video the suspect as he was concealing merchandise, and then he began making his way towards the exit. >> as we approached from different directions, he tried to escape out the back of the store where he was apprehended so police say the suspect was surrounded by 15 officers. >> they say he had
