10:01 am
from according to police that there are multiple injuries that have been reported. >> of course, these situations are developing. >> so there's a lot of scanner traffic right now that we can't confirm what we can confirm from police is that multiple injuries have been reported and that this remains an active and ongoing investigation. police have closed a lot of the roads around the school right now. they're asking people to avoid the area. we just heard we were listening to a mother who has been interviewed by local police. she said that she was able to ascertain that her kids are okay because her sister works at the school. but there are a lot of parents right now who obviously have not been able to get in touch with their children. this is a k through 12 school. we understand that this is a christian school. it was founded in 1978, and it is a very small school, about 200 families from some 56 different churches make up the greater dane county area, where the school resides, including the
10:02 am
metropolitan madison and its surrounding communities. and those are all students that are represented in the student body. it's a very small school, and we are still learning more. this is the second shooting at a christian school in just weeks. there was one in northern california where a five year old and a six year old were shot. those two children did survive, but they have serious injuries very, very serious. still in the hospital, have a long road to recovery. according to the sheriff from the butte county area, that that school shooting happened in early december. so this is the second school shooting at a small christian school in just weeks. boris and brianna, as we learn more, we will bring it to you. >> veronica, please stand by. >> let's bring in retired fbi supervisory agent rob d'amico, along with former boston police commissioner ed davis and cnn senior national security analyst juliette kayyem. also with us. thank you all three for being with us. obviously,
10:03 am
we are awaiting word from police officers. we understand that there's going to be a press conference in about 12 minutes or so. i do wonder, given that this appears to be an active scene. we just saw a set of officers walking in with a k-9 into the building. ed, what do you make of what we're seeing and the fact that we're set to hear from law enforcement shortly? well, it could very well be, boris, that this is an active scene, that they have not caught the person responsible. so it's hard to to to discern just from the initial photographs we're seeing. but when they're going in with canines, they're probably involved in a search inside yeah, certainly you would expect that. >> and editor we are at that point that has become all too familiar where we are waiting to see what has happened here. unfortunately, we know it all too well.
10:04 am
>> that's true. and brianna, there actually, uh, you know, the first job is to evacuate people to make sure that they are attending to anyone who is wounded and to try to get them medical care. um, and then to secure the scene and obviously find the perpetrator. so there's a lot happening in the very early minutes of an incident like this. um, it's hard to get information out. the fact that the police have already scheduled some type of co some idea as to what's going on in a fairly short period of time. but, um, this is all about saving lives at this point. rob, if you could please take us through the stages of what a response like this entails. you have a 28 acre campus, some 400, roughly 400 students, not counting faculty and staff. and you see the large law enforcement presence just outside the campus. what does it look like beyond the
10:05 am
yellow police lines? >> well, in the beginning, you have to secure that, make sure that whoever you think is doing the shooting is neutralized, and then you have to make sure that there's not two. >> if you do neutralize that, um, why they're doing it, they now started doing tactics where emts will actually enter the site while they're still police activity, trying to neutralize the shooter in order to start bringing victims who may be shot out. so they started training emts to actually wear body armor, because in old school shootings, they had to wait a long period of time. and some victims had actually perished during that time. so the training has changed a bit. now that law enforcement will try to neutralize the shooter or pin him down, and emts will actually enter the scene. while it's still somewhat dangerous to start rendering aid to victims and get them out of that that danger area, the fact that they're bringing i can't see the video, but you can
10:06 am
always tell, like if police are entering a building and they're taking very tactical approaches to it, that there's still a threat in the building if they're just walking in with canines, they're not worried about where a gunshot may come from. i think that will tell you that either the shooter is neutralized or in a corner that's not particularly dangerous to where those those police are coming in. so i'd have to see the video. uh, body, you know, body language is going to tell a lot. the fact that they're going to probably do an announcement in a few minutes, i think they have information. i don't think it's an active thing unless they're going to try to get a description out. if someone had gotten out of there to try to get the public to help. >> and i think to your point, what you're describing is just a maybe calmer entrance with the canines. we just saw three officers going in and video from just moments ago here. um rob, take us through this because police officers have told cnn, as they're working to clear the school and they
10:07 am
have no one in custody, we are awaiting details, of course, but there is an array of possibilities here, which is the understanding that the shooter may be inside and is no longer a threat. um, is inside and is a threat. explain to us whether this that would be still active and ongoing. um, the body language that you were suggesting does make you wonder about perhaps not being inside and the threat or that the shooter could be. off scene. um, take us through these possibilities. >> yeah. so, uh, as you mentioned, that the shooter is what we call neutralized or down hard would be that, uh, you know, he was, uh, shot, and he's not posing a threat. as in handcuffed. it could be, uh, rendering medical assistance to him. >> i'm so sorry. we do have an
10:08 am
update from our veronica miracle. so that you are not going to have to speculate on this. veronica, can you give us the latest that you're learning? >> absolutely. our cnn's shimon prokupecz actually spoke with the madison police chief, and this is on the record here. one suspect is down, several casualties have been reported, and there have been transports to hospitals, including children. one staff member has potentially been killed. they are still conducting secondary searches of the building and vehicles. so that's from the madison police chief. according to our cnn shimon prokupecz. that's the latest. >> veronica, thank you so much for that update. very significant news there. it appears that law enforcement believes that a suspect is down. we understand that there are several folks injured, at least one possibly dead. both children and staff being transported to local hospitals. we've got rob d'amico. if you're still with us. i think that speaks to some of the
10:09 am
scenarios that you were describing and the the demeanor that law enforcement had as we watched them enter the building. i wonder what the process looks like now. >> well, now there i think that the canines are in there again to search things. there's oftentimes the possibility of a shooter dropping homemade explosives and other things, other booby traps. um, they'll probably do that if they do a search warrant when they identify the shooter and have to go search his house for evidence. you always want to look for devices because they know the police are going to come there. so that's probably what the canines are going in to do. um, they want to secure it enough that it is also a crime scene. so as they're the first priority obviously is the victims getting them medically set to be able to be transported. um, and then you have a crime scene that you now have to protect. uh, for those all those things that are going on there. so there's a ton of chaos going on. it looks it
10:10 am
looks really bad, but the people inside have gone through. you do tabletop exercises, you do walkthroughs of these. so people really do understand what their roles are. um, and then you're going to have a central command. and then the big thing is getting it out to the media. uh, one, you want to ensure that the parents understand, um, where to go for the, you know, reunification with their child. um, and then they also have to put out information to, again, tell the public what's going on. that's that's become a big training issue, especially with small police departments. large police departments have an entire pr department and they go to training for it. the smaller ones really need to get that training. so they've been doing that through different programs because getting information out is very important and we're just to update our viewers looking at the scene there in madison, wisconsin from moments ago, there has been a shooting at a christian school. >> abundant life christian
10:11 am
school, which is situated in a very residential area. there. i want to bring in our shimon prokupecz, who just got some reporting from law enforcement officials. shimon, go back over what you've learned here. so, brianna, i've been in communication with the police chief there in madison, wisconsin, chief barnes, and he tells me that they believe at this point that there is a suspect down, that there are several casualties that have been transported to an area hospital. and some of those injured include children. there is also a teacher or a staff member that is injured as well severely injured. that is something that they're still investigating. but that staff member also taken to the hospital and severely injured, they are conducting secondary searches, which is what we obviously always see in these situations where police go back in, they start to search to make sure there are no other suspects, no other gunman on the loose. so that is what we
10:12 am
are seeing develop now. >> they're doing the secondary searches, but obviously still very much ongoing situation. >> we don't know if the gunman was a student or if it was someone outside, but as you've been reporting, the chief said he's expected to brief the media at about 15 after or so in about five minutes or so, we should hear from the chief. but obviously a very, very serious situation under underway here in the madison, wisconsin area. again, several students have been injured. they believe at this time that the gunman has been contained, has been either injured. he's telling me that the suspect is down. and so right now, at this point, they're trying to actually investigate, obviously, exactly what happened. but at this point, they believe they have it contained. >> they're doing secondary searches to make sure there are no other shooters. >> shimon, thank you so much for that update. please stand by and let us know if you hear
10:13 am
more. again, we are set to hear from police in just moments in about three minutes for a scheduled press conference. we do have a panel of experts with us and juliette kayyem. i'm curious to get your reaction to what we're hearing here. the suspect apparently down. law enforcement reacting to this situation in a very quick manner. it appears. >> yes. >> and the quick press conference is essential at this stage, just because when you have the family unification issue, you need to get parents back with kids. and then you also need to make sure that other schools in the area are not. unduly impacted. we may get a motive if they do have the suspect, or they do know who the suspect is, why this particular teacher? was it a classroom or was it a why was this particular teacher killed? was it she was leading a classroom that the shooter was in, or was was is this a known suspect? and that will help. it's not it's not ideal, but that will help sort of give
10:14 am
police and of course the community a sense of what happened at this school. of course, we are always in the eye. we're always in the school shooting season, i have to say, and i'm not and not sarcastically. it's been a little while since we've seen this kind of. police activity, and that was probably because they didn't have him originally. but like your other analyst, it you know, the worst is over. we now need to figure out in particular what the motive is. and and who the suspect is. >> and we are watching right now as we are awaiting here in just moments. it's scheduled for 115 east coast time, 1215 madison time. an update from law enforcement there. police say they believe a suspect. the suspect is down, but there are children among the injured in this school shooting at abundant life christian school. and right now, there are a lot of worried parents out there. >> yeah, no question about
10:15 am
that. our one of our affiliates actually caught up with one. and as we await this press conference, we're going to take a quick break and leave you with this witness sound from a parent who rushed to try to find their children. um, i just pulled up here a little bit ago, but my mom, obviously she lives nearby, and she watches my kids, so she did give me a call that she saw a ton of police and, um, obviously my daughter goes here and my nieces and nephews, my sister, um, so she called me on the phone. >> she told me, please remain calm. so i was already trying to mentally prepare, but, um, yeah, after a bit, i was kind of like, okay. and she's like, there is an active shooter at the school. she had like an inside source kind of tell her, and i just bolted out, drove down here. i called my husband and he made his way over here. um, obviously i couldn't get in, but i went around the back to my mom's house and talked
10:16 am
with her. and like i said, my sister is involved with the school, so i was able to get a little bit of an inside take on what was going on. but she did tell me that they were okay. um i can't fool myself. >> it was the most exciting time in the world. >> his life has extremely joyful moments and some really difficult moments. >> you only come across an artist like luther vandross once in a lifetime. >> luther. never too much new year's day on cnn. >> everyone's running to subway for three. all new spicy footlongs. wait, subway did what? that's right. they're bringing the heat with creamy sriracha, jalapenos and all new ghost pepper bread. but hurry! these subs are only here for a limited time. and are you ready for this? >> are you ready for this? are you ready for this new alka-seltzer plus cold or flu? >> fizzy chews. chew fizz. feel better? >> fast. >> no water needed. new alka-seltzer plus fizzy juice. >> this week on chewy. shop. get a $30 gift card to use on

10:21 am
information comes to us from the chief of police there in madison, wisconsin. chief barnes, i was in touch with him as this was happening. and he tells me that they believe that at this point, the suspect is down, that there are children that have been taken to the hospital and have been injured. there is also a staff member of the school that was seriously injured, potentially a fatal injury, but they're still sorting through that. and as you said, we are waiting to hear from the chief. he told me he was expected to speak around 115 1215 local time. i think they're still gathering a lot of the information and as they try to get everything they can together, that's when we should. we should hear from the chief here. but the key here now is that obviously the police here know what they're dealing with. they believe they have the suspect. they believe now that the situation itself is under control. and now what they're doing are secondary searches to make sure there are no other gunmen, no other suspects that they're looking for. but obviously a very
10:22 am
frightening situation here. you have children that have been injured. you have staff members that have been injured, and police are still trying to sort through everything. i asked if the gunman was a student or if it was from somebody, from somebody outside. i have not heard back from the chief yet, so obviously they are still trying to gather everything and i believe they'll have a lot of information for us. once the chief takes to the mikes. but very serious, serious situation here yet again, we are dealing with a school shooting. you know, immediately when i texted with the police chief, that's what he told me. he said, we're dealing with a school shooting here. this is something that i know. this chief has trained for, has dealt with, and it is something that has been on the top of mind for them there in madison, wisconsin, as it is for every police chief across the country. now having to face this threat. and this is something that certainly they have been preparing for, and i hope here soon we will hear
10:23 am
more information from him. do we know anything about the exact timing here and about the response? no, i don't know, because as this was developing, you know, so i would say to you, it was around maybe or so, you know, close to 1:00 that i started texting with him and it took some time to hear from him. so sometime around that point, they already knew that they had the situation contained. so just before 1:00, they realized that the situation was contained, suspect being down usually means that it was someone who a suspect that was shot, whether self-inflicted or by the police. that's usually what that means to me. but i've not been able to get brianna any more information at this point, but it seems like from everything that i communicated with him about, it seems that at least at the very least, they do have the situation under control shimon, please stand by and keep us posted
10:24 am
with the latest. >> i do want to let our viewers know that wisconsin's governor, tony evers, just posted on social media talking about the school shooting, saying, quote, i am closely monitoring the incident at abundant life christian school in madison. we are praying for the kids, educators, and entire abundant life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond, end quote. again, we are set to hear from police just moments from now. a press conference was originally originally scheduled for 1:15 p.m.. i want to go to veronica miracle, who's also been monitoring this story for us. and veronica, you have some information about what makes this school and this campus. actually, here comes the police chief. now let's listen in as we wait for an update from officials. >> usually this is where i start and i say thank you for coming and talk about how important the media is to our community. but the truth is, today is a sad, sad day, not only for madison, but for our entire country. we're yet
10:25 am
another police chief is doing a press conference to speak about violence in our community, specifically in one of the places that's most sacred to me. as someone who loves education and to someone who has children that are in schools. so i'm going to tell you what i know. i'll answer any questions that i can. there'll be a secondary briefing that our pio will let you know about. okay. today around 10:57 a.m., our officers were responding to a call of an active shooter at the abundant life christian school here in madison. when officers arrived, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. we train on this almost quarterly. the last time we trained on this as commanders was approximately two weeks ago. the protocols are simple stop the killing. stop the
10:26 am
dying. find out who's doing this. the officers did that, and they did that adamantly. we had officers from around the county and around the state that came in support of this particular incident. officers located a juvenile who they believe was responsible for this deceased in the building. additionally, the officers began administering life saving efforts to anyone who was wounded and making sure that those persons were transported. what we know is that a total of about seven persons were transported from the scene to area hospitals for treatment. we know that at least three people have lost their lives, including a juvenile person. i don't have any other information about those persons who have lost their lives, and we're not going to release that until we have, of course, spoken with family members and ensuring that they are fully aware of this tragic, tragic scene that occurred today. i
10:27 am
want to thank all of the law enforcement partners and community members that came out to help our friends at the atf. i've gotten calls from our friends at the fbi, the state patrol, the sheriff's office, monona police department, our fire department. it goes on and on and on because this is something that we all prepare for, but we hope we never have to do. as you can see, we have a unification center that was immediately set up where parents and guardians and loved ones and grandparents wanted to get information about their loved ones, and we wanted to make sure that they were unified immediately. so we were doing more than one thing at one time. we're still going through methodically clearing that school, clearing every vehicle and making certain that there is no other threats to this community, which we believe there are none. we
10:28 am
immediately alerted our mayor's office, and i've been on the phone with her and her office constantly. we also alerted madison schools. we put the schools on lockdown, but there is no threat to mmsd schools at this time. but we wanted to make sure that we did our due diligence in this particular case. again, we're still going through collecting evidence, collecting information, making sure that our community is safe from what is a sad day for our community and for our country. and we have to do a little bit better. i don't have all the answers that you want right now, but i will tell you this. we have some of the best officers in the entire country. our detectives are amazing, and we're going to go and work hard and go through this scene so that we can piece together what exactly happened. again, there will be another briefing in about two hours. and if i have additional information, i will certainly let you know what that information is.
10:29 am
again, around 10:57 a.m., officers responded to an active shooter. they responded for our protocol. they found the person who they believe was responsible, who was down, deceased. we know that it's juvenile we know that there are other persons who have lost their lives. we know that we've transported about seven people after giving them life saving measures. it's important to notice, too, that about three miles from here is our training center. today, our special event team medics were in training and so they got to practice in real time. they left the training center immediately and came down here and doing in real time what they were actually practicing for. and that's why training is so important and making sure that we can provide the best possible training and the best possible response for our community members. i'm asking
10:30 am
everyone to send your heart, your heartfelt wishes and prayers and thoughts yet again to a community, but this time it's my community. uh, dylan? >> yeah. >> who can we start over here with? questions? >> chief, you mentioned you're a father. you're the police chief here in madison. >> what emotions are you feeling right now after going through all that? >> to be honest with you, i'm feeling a little dismayed now. i'm so close to christmas. um. every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever. and these types of trauma don't just go away. and we need to figure out and try to piece together what exactly happened. right now, my heart is heavy for my community. my heart is heavy for madison, and we have to come together as a community and figure out what happened here and make sure that it doesn't happen in any other place. that should be a refuge for students in our community right there. >> what sort of gun related
10:31 am
policies, if any, were in place at the school? and did the school have metal detectors? >> i'm not aware that the school had metal detectors, nor should schools have metal detectors. it's a school. it's a safe space. so i don't know. again, it is a private christian school. it is not under the the authority of msd's. and that is something that we'll have to look into. >> chief of the of the of the of the seven victims. how many are students? how many are teachers? >> we're not going to give. i'm not going to give any information about who? the student, who the victims are, whether they're students, staff or parents, because we need to make sure that we can notify people. i think that's the most important thing. before we go any further. >> but police. but police didn't. they never fired their weapons. that is correct. correct. >> i don't i don't i don't know if it's a male or a female, but the police department did not fire their weapons. thank you. >> scott, are there three fatalities you mentioned, including the suspected shooter? >> that's correct. yes, sir. that's correct. >> are the seven that was transported? >> are the three fatalities within that? seven are addition
10:32 am
to that? >> yes. within that seven? yes. thank you. >> was the shooter a student at the school? >> we believe the the shooter was a student at the school? yes. >> what can you tell us about the status of the other transports? >> we know that they range from minor minor injuries to life threatening. i know that's a huge. you know, spectrum, but that's what we know now. and so we need everyone again to send your thoughts and your prayers out to them. one thing i do know is that we have some of the best medical care in the country here in madison, and so we we hope that everyone will recover. but at this time we don't know. >> so we did just get an update from our command post five deceased at this time, five injured. >> so a total of ten. a total of ten. >> again this is this is a a ever evolving situation. um, you know, just just hearing that. what does that make you think? how does that make you feel that we have to do a better job in our community on a monday? right. so close to christmas that we're updating
10:33 am
victims. and so there's a lot of work that has to be done, and we're committed to doing that work. we just ask for your patience. i think the most important part is the. reunification. again, that we spoke about making sure that those persons who were in the schools, whether they staff, whether they're staff, students or what have you are reunified. and we have done that again, i want to say thank you to all our partners again, our friends are here from the atf. they're going to help us. i heard the question about the gun. i don't know yet, which is why we have a great partnership with the with the atf that will help us determine the origin of this gun and where it happened. so i'm going to i'm going to leave it at that and we will have another press conference. stephanie has the location. >> we're doing 230 at fire station 14 in their community room. 230, fire station 14. >> can you confirm the five who are dead? >> does that include the shooter? >> that does include wood. yes. >> students, teachers, a mix. >> yeah. >> again. again, we're not
10:34 am
going to talk about about that until we notify all the families that may be involved. again, this is again. again. this is an ever, ever evolving situation and we're trying to figure it out. what did you say, ma'am? >> school has been cleared. are all the students out of the school? >> the school has been through a secondary clearing. we're doing another one now with the help of bomb dogs, just in case we want to clear vehicles and things of that nature. so we're going to take our time and we're going to go through we're going to do everything that we can. so thank you very much and we'll see you soon. thank you. >> fire station 14. >> today. there are many families there in madison, wisconsin, who are having the worst day of their lives just before the holidays, after the latest school shooting here in america. as you heard, the police chief there saying this today is a sad, sad day. he said, for madison, for the country, as another police chief is doing a press conference in a place that's supposed to be sacred, a school there, he said five people. and that was updated in the middle
10:35 am
of his press conference. it went from 3 to 5 killed. seven people, had been transported to hospitals, and some of those have unfortunately died. and he's not able to say if it's students, faculty, if it's a mix, because they're still in the process of notification of families. >> you could hear the frustration in the voice of police chief sean barnes there, as he was describing this as a sad day, talking about how they were actually medics who were training just three miles down the street from here for this exact scenario, who were called in to respond to it. he says that at about 10:57 a.m. local time in madison, police responded to an active shooter call with multiple gunshot victims when they arrived and began doing a search of the premises. they found a juvenile deceased believed to be responsible for the shooting, the police chief there also clarifying that the shooter was believed to be a student, though he would not provide any further details about who exactly the student was, what

grade or age they may have been. again, five people deceased, five injured and currently receiving treatment at local hospitals. we have a panel of experts with us along with our reporters. let's first go to cnn's shimon prokupecz, because, shimon, you were texting in the last hour or so with chief barnes, and you heard him there describing this as a tragedy. i wonder what the next stage of the investigation is, as we are set to hear from police in roughly two hours. >> well, sadly, like chief barnes said, you know, i've unfortunately had to cover many school shootings in my career and this is just horrific. and i think the next steps is going to be with this community and how to deal with what they are about to face. you know, the media and the many questions that the families are going to have. and i've gotten to know chief barnes because i just did a story with him recently. and, you know, he himself was an educator, and he takes this very seriously. he's one of those police chiefs who wears
10:37 am
his emotions on his sleeve and he's very forward thinking kind of police chief. and that's why we're seeing him do this press conference so quickly. he believes in the right to information and putting stuff out there. and no doubt for him in this community, obviously this is going to be a very, very, very difficult time. you're dealing with a student who is the alleged suspect here, a juvenile who opened fire on classmates, on teachers. and now, obviously for the community, there's going to be many, many questions of why and how. and that's something that chief barnes and his team there is going to work on figuring out. and we'll hear again in the next couple of hours from the chief again. but you can hear from the chief. i mean, just today there were medics that were in training with how to deal with this, and they left the training to go to the scene. this is something that
10:38 am
the chief said his team just trained for just a couple of weeks ago. they are constantly training for this, that potentially this could happen we go again. this has happened in his community. so we have five dead, including the gunman. it appears at this point that the injury is self-inflicted. the police did not open fire. they found the suspected gunman as they were going into the school immediately. when they got to the school, they saw victims. they saw students and teachers with gunshot wounds. and then they took action. and as the chief said, they started giving treatment. you heard the chief there talk about what they trained for. that is you go towards the gunfire, you stop the dying, you stop the killing. and that's what the chief said happened here. they went towards the victims. they went to clear the rooms. they went to get the victims out of the rooms to get them to the
10:39 am
hospital. some sadly died on their way to the hospital or while at the hospital. but now is going to be the big question of why and how and what they can do to try and help this community as they try to heal. now in madison, wisconsin. so as i said, the suspect believed to be a student, a juvenile also killed here. four other victims. and we have yet to learn the breakdown of how many were students? how many were teachers? we know that at least one of them is potentially a teacher, because that's what the chief told me. they believe that a teacher was fatally wounded as well. so now we wait to hear more, obviously, and we wait to deal with another community yet again. having to deal with such a tragedy. yeah. as you said, everyone is a victim here. this school is k through 12 little kids, big kids, all of them kids. and this is what these almost 400
10:40 am
children right before their holiday break have encountered today there in madison, wisconsin. and we should note it was just about 90 minutes ago that police were responding to this. so they are very much in the throes of notifying parents. shimon. yeah. and the other thing we have to remember, you know what this you know, so many other parents now who have suffered through this, you know, like where in uvalde, every time there's a school shooting, you hear from these parents, it brings back those horrific memories for them. like in connecticut. so yes, everyone who has been through this, and i think what the chief said there was so right, everyone is a victim. and yet again, as he said, this happens again. and that is also kind of what such a always such a tragedy in all of this, that it doesn't only right, just affect this one community. this is going to affect so many, so many people. and here we go.
10:41 am
you know, yet again, for the for families who have suffered through this gun violence, school shootings and to have just these small kids that were sitting in their classrooms, walking their halls for this community, it's going to be a very, very, very, very difficult time. >> yeah. as the police chief said, everyone there is a victim also noting that he is a father with kids in school. we just got very significant information. five people killed at the abundant life christian school in madison, wisconsin, including the shooter in this apparent school shooting dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. we have plenty more news to bring you. please stay tuned to cnn. we're going to take a quick break. we leave you with sound from a local resident in that area heard. >> well, what i heard was ambulance. >> ambulance squad car, fire engine. and i thought they were
10:42 am
on 51, but i heard i went to the internet and looked up the scanners and the scanner said they were doing triage at city church parking lot. and i went, oh, what's going on at church? because this is where i go to church. and my kids went to school here at alcs. so i came down and i never saw so many squad cars. i didn't know there were that many squad cars in madison as they came to support the kids. >> we saw a few guys with long guns. >> they went in the school with a dog and then later on, a little later on, i saw groups of kids coming out of the school in groups, into the church sanctuary, probably as they were in lockdown and clearing the building and slowly taking out the kids bit by bit by bit i want to be the greatest player that i could possibly become harvey.

10:48 am
the juvenile was a student at the school, but there were several people transported to hospitals. some of them have unfortunately died. but again, what police are now saying four killed. >> yeah, four killed and the shooter as well. and the shooter as well. >> five total. >> yeah. at this k through 12 school, a private christian school, one that had roughly 390 students enrolled there. this was the monday before christmas break. at the end of the week, they were set to go on christmas break, something that police chief sean barnes mentioned in his comments. how some of the families in this community are going to have to endure a holiday season without their loved ones, without children, perhaps also without adults in their lives. as we noted, it's believed that at least one staff member was shot and killed during this incident. we have a panel of experts with us, ed davis and juliette kayyem have been standing by. and juliette, first, i want to go to you. just given what we've heard
10:49 am
from the police chief there, pointing out that there are five deceased, five injured, but that he cannot get into the details of who those folks may be, in part because families have to be notified that they've lost their next of kin. i do wonder what the process is like to identify a suspect in this situation, one that we should note in which officers discovered this juvenile, already deceased when they arrived on the scene. >> yeah. and just to just to take just a brief moment, because i think sometimes we can forget this just how absolutely jarring it was to have the police chief be told the number had increased in real time. i think we say numbers like three four. and you just saw his face realize like, you know. yeah, two more had passed away in the period of our press conference. and i, having done this a million, unfortunately, too many times, that was just so jarring to me. and you saw just how important it was for this police chief
10:50 am
who should be commended for this getting out there early, at least on the broader details about about that the assailant was essentially downed and that the school was deemed safe. for now, the family unification is is also practiced. we're we that's part of school shooting protocols. they know now who who is dead and those families are likely already know. now this is just going to be a matter of of of of making sure that they've processed the information. and i think in the press conference in about 90 minutes, uh, who not maybe we won't learn names, but we'll definitely learn the ages. if this assailant was, um, if the killer was a member of the school, which we believe he's likely over 13 at least. who was he? was their suspicions about him. and, of course, as part of this dialog, now we look to the parents. where was
10:51 am
where the parents aware, were they ignored or did they help facilitate this in ways that we've seen in other schools, giving them access to guns? that's the narrative of how these go, these sort of all too familiar incidents, um, uh, in the last, you know, couple decades. >> yeah, certainly there will be a lot of questions about that. and i do want to bring in ed davis, former boston police commissioner. ed, we heard from chief barnes there talking about how they had already done their secondary searches. take us through. but they're not done. obviously, they're still collecting information and evidence. take us through what that looks like at this point in time and why that's so important well, you're dealing with a person who has committed a horrendous act, and you don't know what other things that they were planning or they had in mind for you. >> so you have to meticulously go through that, that area where the person has been to determine whether or not there
10:52 am
are any secondary devices, any ammunition has been stored or other guns have been stored in other places. i mean, this is a really intense search process. and then once the area is secured and all the victims have been removed, you really have to secure the crime scene. and that can be a multiple day process. in the marathon case, it was almost seven days of of securing evidence and recovering things. uh, in an internal scene like this, it will probably be a couple of days, but they they really have to build a case on this. not for prosecution. unless, as juliette said, there's some other person somehow involved in the, in the in the providing of the firearms. but but mostly to just to make sure that we understand this thing right from the beginning to the end. um, we're trying really hard to figure out where the points
10:53 am
of intervention are in situations like this, how you can stop it before it actually goes off, and to understand that, you really need to methodically put together precisely every bit of knowledge that you can glean from the scene from the background of the shooter, what the online profile is, all of those investigative steps that you use in a regular case will apply here, so that we understand what happened and juliet, a part of that also goes to a question that inevitably, everyone linked to this shooting, the entire community will repeatedly ask themselves moving forward. and that is why why something like this ultimately took place. help us understand what investigators actually go through the process of going in to gathering information to determine a motive in a shooting like this this is a christian school. >> it's a religious school. it's a place of of worship and education. the two the two areas where we would once, where we once hoped were safe
10:54 am
spaces are not so. so you know, what kind of motivation might have been related to that? it's just it's undeniable that that is going to be even though he was a student, that's going to be part of of this question. what was his relationship to the school had he been kicked out of the school? was he suspended often? was that related to the schools? um, the fact that it was not a public school so had more flexibility. they are going to want to look at that. it's and um, and to determine another way that they'll look at it is sort of what kind of clues was was he giving both in the classroom and outside the classroom? again, those will come relatively quickly. we have seen almost in all of these cases. by tomorrow we will start to hear a narrative that he he was having issues or his family was having issues or or there were suspicions about him. that generally is the case. people don't. especially juveniles don't just wake up one day. there's a there's a
10:55 am
story behind what they did. uh, in terms of this kind of shooting. so i think because it's relatively limited now, it's not like an outsider coming into a christian school. it's it's most likely an insider. it the narrative will be able to be formed through interviews, social media, if he was on it, other students who may have known what his behavior is like and whether there was a triggering event like why today, the school's likely out of session by friday. like most schools, because of the because of the holiday. and you know, it's a it's a christian school and it's christmas week. and and we also have to respect and understand the, the you know, the sort of layering of all of these things. shimon was talking about previous victims of school shooting in this instance, a place of faith as well as a school is going to have it's going to have ripple
10:56 am
effects throughout the entire community. >> yeah, it sure will. um, juliet, thank you so much. we are going to get in a quick break just to update our viewers what we are following here four killed at a school shooting in madison, wisconsin at a k through 12 christian school. abundant life christian school there in madison, wisconsin. the shooter, who was believed to be the shooter, found deceased a juvenile believed to be a student at the school. we are getting new information. we will bring it to you when we come back news night with abby phillip tonight at 10:00 eastern on cnn. >> best part of the party. snooping in the bathroom. ooh! party! fell. not listening to your dentist. make the sonicare switch for a champ. be gentle. be effective. >> be you. i love you
