kasie hunt next. >> it's monday, january 6th, right now on cnn this morning four years ago, january 6th, this capitol was attacked. >> i'm determined to do everything in my power to respect the peaceful transfer of power. >> four years later today, congress readies to certify donald trump as the nation's 47th president. plus, i think at the end of the day, president trump is going to prefer, as he likes to say, one big, beautiful bill. >> and we're going to be dismantling the deep state all along the way. >> setting the stage after securing the speaker's gavel, mike johnson gets the ball rolling on plans to usher in trump's ambitious agenda and a wintry blast. the brutal storm traveling across states from the west to the east that could bury millions of americans with blizzard conditions.
2:02 am
5 a.m. here on the east coast, a live look at saint louis, missouri on this wintry, wintry morning. good morning everyone. i'm kasie hunt, it's wonderful to have you with us. a brutal winter storm impacting much of the country this morning. more than 55 million people under winter weather alerts from the central u.s. to the east coast. more than 1200 flights already canceled this morning, including hundreds of flights in and out of washington, d.c. as this region prepares for up to 16in of snow possible in some parts. our city's mayor already declaring a snow emergency. federal offices in d.c. are closed because of the snow. the closures not set to impact congress, which is getting ready to certify the 2024 election results later today. further west, conditions knocked out power for more than 200,000 customers from missouri to kentucky. >> there are some really bad conditions out here. there's a
2:03 am
lot of snow, significant amount of snow. you can see that about 2 to 3in right now. and it's rapidly coming down getting worse. i'm glad to see there's not many vehicles out here. i hope that stays the trend because you don't want to be out in this time. it's not good. it's better to stay home, allow road workers, cdot people to get the roadways as clear as we can, and let first responders hand those critical calls. >> all right. so everyone should be careful out there. we're trying to track down our meteorologist derek van dam, who's been inundated with some tech gremlins. i don't know if they're weather related or not, but hopefully we'll have him for you in just a couple of minutes. but in the meantime, let's talk politics. sweeping tax cuts, border security, raising the debt limit. just a few of president elect donald trump's priorities to begin his second term. he wants republicans to put everything in what he calls, quote, one big, beautiful bill, end quote. he'd like to see it passed by memorial day. this is, of course, going to be quite the tall order for republicans who
2:04 am
have a razor thin majority in the house. >> there's a lot of merit to that, because we can put it all together. one big up or down vote, which can save the country quite literally, because there are so many elements to it. and it will give us a little bit more time to negotiate that and get it right. >> speaker mike johnson trying to make it sound easy, but senate majority leader john thune knows that this demand is going to be quite a heavy lift. >> we have the same set of objectives. we want to get to the same destination. but i think at times there will be differences in how we get there and understanding the unique aspects of how the senate operates is something that i'm going to have to be able to share and convey to the president and and help him understand, i think what the you know, what the contours are of what we can accomplish here in the senate and what's realistic. >> all right. joining us now, sophia cai, she's political reporter for axios. sophia, good morning. thank you so much for being here. thanks, casey. so this of course, it's it's down in the procedural weeds.
2:05 am
one bill, two bills. but the politics around it are actually pretty significant. it's very unlikely that if they try to split donald trump's agenda into pieces, it could actually pass the house of representatives in those pieces because of just how small a window that the house speaker has to thread here with a majority that he has. what is step one in this process, and how likely is it do you think that donald trump's agenda can actually become law? >> you know, i think it is fairly likely because it is everything that he has promised on the campaign trail. i mean, he said drill, baby, drill tax cuts, and he wants to do the deportations. and what he's going to be doing now is asking congress for the money to do it. i think that how it happens will take a while. and speaker johnson has acknowledged that it may take until april or may to get all of this done. but he's got to write the bill first, and there's going to be a lot of negotiations. and he has acknowledged that he wants
2:06 am
everybody to be heard and to be seen in some of that process, and then they'll have to go to the senate where, you know, there's going to be a majority for that to pass. but even there, because, you know, there's just less room for people with objections to really make themselves feel heard. and so, you know, it might be a quicker process. and trump will want to get his campaign promises fulfilled, but it will really take everyone to come into an agreement. >> yeah. and i mean, i think it's important to underscore part of why we're talking about it this way is that this is designed to get around the filibuster in the senate. right? they can they can if it's a tax bill, basically, they are able to to pass it through with 50, you know, with a majority with 50 votes. and what do you think is the impact of john thune in particular, having a less not quite as deep of a relationship with donald trump as, say, the house speaker, mike johnson, has started to build?
2:07 am
>> i think it means that he has fewer cards to play, and that i think, you know, everything will start with the house. and johnson, you know, is it's johnson who went to mar-a-lago to do a presser with trump. you know, is johnson, who was invited to the football games. and so it will be with johnson first that trump says this is how i want it done. and it kind of leaves the senate to sort of be in the second step of the process for for johnson himself. >> let's let's watch. this was what um, jim banks had to say over the weekend. let's take a look. >> house republicans are unified behind donald trump. the trump agenda, if it's one reconciliation bill, if it's two, if it's ten, we got to we got to get it done. i think i think this week proved that we can do that. >> so of course, a reference to the vote for house speaker, where of course, johnson did manage to do it on on the first ballot. but again, especially
2:08 am
with the timing here, republicans are going to be so short in the house because a couple of them are likely to leave to take posts in the trump administration. >> yeah, i think that's true. and, you know, one of the big things is that in the house, i think johnson will have to give, you know, some bones to the republicans who almost did not vote for him and that they really want to be cutting spending. >> all right, sofia, kai, for us this morning, thank you so much for joining us. i appreciate it. all right. straight ahead here on cnn this morning, elon musk shifts his focus to the global stage, weighing in on the uk's political landscape, calling for the replacement of a trump ally. plus, the device, the new orleans terror suspect used to map out his deadly bourbon street rampage. and just ten days before the inauguration, donald trump set to be sentenced in his new york. hush money cover up case. >> i think new york has demonstrated, frankly, how the justice system ought to operate. no one should be above the law.

premieres january 25th on cnn. >> all right, welcome back. after weighing in on the u.s. election to get donald trump into office. elon musk is now apparently turning his sights to uk politics. in recent days, the world's richest man using his social media platform x to go after british prime minister keir starmer. starmer leads the more liberal labor party in the british government. of course, musk has posted more than 50 times since the new year, calling for starmer's removal from office, even arguing that he should be put in prison. musk is alleging that starmer failed to prosecute child sex abuse cases in the country. musk has also been apparently alienating right wing allies over his calls to free a far right activist in britain. it's putting reform uk party leader and trump ally nigel farage at odds with musk. >> the fact that he supports me politically and supports reform doesn't mean i have to agree
2:14 am
with every single statement he makes on x. and i think you're getting bogged down in this, you know. you know, i will at the inauguration, have a conversation with him on a variety of things. this will no doubt be one of them. i think i've made it perfectly clear that i don't agree with everything he stands for. but i do believe in free speech. i think he's a hero. >> so farage as hero doesn't seem to view him quite the same way. after that bbc interview aired, musk posted this saying, quote, the reform party needs a new leader. farage doesn't have what it takes. joining us now for more is cnn's max foster live for us in london. max. good morning. can you explain to us what exactly is going on here? why musk is so agitated about keir starmer and how nigel farage fits into it? >> well, we have to try and figure a lot of it out. i mean, there's certainly a lot that elon musk has done to unsettle european governments. i mean, others are italy and germany. he's getting very involved in their internal affairs and even accusations that he's
2:15 am
interfering in elections. for example, here in the uk. his issue? he's had a long standing issue with keir starmer, who he says didn't act on child exploitation back in the days when he was head of public prosecutions. and he wants starmer to go. starmer, you know, has to tread carefully here because obviously elon musk has emerged as a gatekeeper to donald trump, who is crucial to starmer's successful success, really, in terms of any sort of foreign policy. so he's trying to juggle that. i think this farage spat is particularly interesting because, you know, the beef here is over. tommy robinson, who is a far right activist currently in a british prison. um, and musk wants him released. farage is not a fan of, um, of this far right leader. many people see him as, and they've fallen out over it in a quite an extraordinary way. i mean, musk is calling for farage to go now and to lose his job. um, and then musk
2:16 am
simply, i mean, farage just isn't standing down. he's really standing up to musk, which is pretty extraordinary. he's saying, i'm not going anywhere. it's a point of principle for me. i don't agree with tommy robinson. i don't want to have anything to do with reform. so he's basically musk is basically falling out with leaders across the board here in the uk. >> yeah, well, and max, isn't this kind of remarkable? in no small part because there were conversations or at least discussions that musk might donate some large sum of money somehow, through his british branch of of the x platform. or there was somebody floating something about him becoming a uk citizen so he could donate in uk elections to farage. i mean, this seems like a very abrupt about face. >> absolutely. i mean, farage and musk are obviously very close to donald trump. and here in the uk, farage is seen as a big link to donald trump for the uk. so that relationship is really important. um, and, you know, musk and farage appear to be getting on really well. you
2:17 am
know, they were meeting up and there was all this talk that musk was about to throw millions of dollars at farage's reform party. so it appeared to be going that way. i mean, westminster was full of, you know, reports of this money coming towards reform, which would give it huge power in the uk election in a few years time. and everyone's talking about farage becoming the next prime minister. that was linked to the fact that musk was throwing his support behind farage. but suddenly, you know, in one tweet, musk has thrown that all out. i don't know what he's trying to achieve from this, because obviously, um, farage was a big supporter of musk as well. he continues to be. he says he's still a fan, but he just won't compromise on this robinson issue. >> yeah, it's very interesting. and of course, i'm curious what donald trump if if elon musk is talking to donald trump about all this and what impact that might have on all of it. max foster for us this morning. max, always grateful to have you. thank you so much. thanks, casey. all right. coming up next here on cnn this morning, president biden heads to new

2:31 am
what? the house? january 6th select committee later called an effort to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. >> everyone here will soon be marching over to the capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard. and we fight. we fight like hell. and if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore. >> and fight they did. for hours, rioters clashed with capitol police officers. they chased members of congress from their chambers, and they put the certification of joe biden's election victory on hold. eventually, though, the joint session of congress reconvened. trump's own vice president, mike pence, presided over his own electoral defeat. in the four years since the violence of that day, the department of justice has made more than 1500 arrests across almost all 50 states. it's been the largest criminal investigation in justice department history. now, all

those arrests, convictions and guilty pleas could be swept away as donald trump returns to office after downplaying and dismissing the violent events of that day while running for reelection. >> they were there proud. they were there with love in their heart. that was an unbelievable. and it was a beautiful day. >> now the outgoing president is calling on americans to remember what happened on this day four years ago, in a new opinion piece in the washington post, president biden writes this, quote, an unrelenting effort has been underway to rewrite, even erase the history of that day to tell us we didn't see what we all saw with our own eyes. to dismiss concerns about it as some kind of as some kind of partisan obsession. to explain it away as a protest that just got out of hand. that is not what happened. end quote. after calling his predecessor a, quote, threat to democracy, end quote, on the campaign trail, president biden says he now has new hope as he gets ready to

2:34 am
finalized when we see kamala harris announcing a president elect, trump and his running mate jd vance, as the next leaders of the country. and i think we've seen, you know, hakeem jeffries say in his acceptance speech last week when he became the majority or the minority leader again, say that democrats do accept the results of elections and thankfully, that there's no. deniers in their in their group. so we're going to see a lot of those images today on the capitol as they gather to to finalize this election. >> yeah. mariana, i mean, we had before january 6th, 2021, there had been some instances where members of congress might object to a slate of electors from their state that happened back, you know, during some of the back and forth over president george w. bush when his election was certified. do you think there's any chance we'll see that today? >> i think not. i think after what we saw last year, there's a lot of feeling in the capitol right now that this has to be a speedy process that just, you know, conforms to norm and goes back to, you know, the most

recent occasions where it was basically an in and out, you know, they have some pomp, they have some celebration, but most of the time it's just a ceremonial step. and there's a feeling in the capitol that even with the snowstorm, they're going to show up and get it done today in order to let things flow smoothly. >> right. it used to be simply perfunctory. let's talk briefly about what may happen to some of the people who have been convicted or pled guilty to things that they did on january 6th, during the capitol riot. senator john thune was on meet the press this weekend, and he was asked about those pardons. he, of course, was at the capitol on that day on january 6th, 2021. let's watch what he said. >> do you support that pardoning people who attacked police officers who stormed the capitol that day? >> well, i mean, as we've discovered under the biden administration, the pardon authority is a very broad one. i mean, he's he's taken it to a whole new level. that's ultimately going to be a decision that president trump is going to have to make.
2:36 am
>> and of course, we've heard that he does want to. president-elect trump does want to pardon some of these people within hours of taking office. he has said, how far do we expect president elect trump to go with this? >> yes. i mean, honestly, from speaking to experts and speaking also to to republicans, just catching this vibe, they do. he has the power. it seems like they are using the pardons that president biden had for his son to kind of excuse, you know, democrats to kind of throw it that way. i wouldn't be surprised if he goes through with it. but the thing republicans in the capitol are really refusing to engage with this topic, as you saw in there. he's just sending it over to president trump. i think it is part of the strategy. you know, say we're in the future. we are no longer talking about the past. we want to move over. we want to move past this. even though the own president elect is not doing so. so i don't expect to see a lot of republican pushback against that because they are leaning back on what you know, that their excuse or their reasoning being that president biden went so far as using the

pardons himself in the way that he did with his son. >> all right. mariana alfaro for us this morning. mariana, thanks very much for your time. i appreciate it. all right. now, this this week, donald trump will be sentenced in his new york hush money cover up case. and then in two weeks, he'll take office as the next president of the united states. the judge in the case has already said the president elect won't face legal penalties for his conviction, but that hasn't stopped trump from railing against him. trump on social media writing this about the judge overseeing the case, quote, merchan has so little respect for the constitution that he is keeping in place an illegal gag order on me, your president and president elect, just so i cannot expose his and his family's disqualifying and illegal conflicts. i'm the only political opponent in american history not allowed to defend myself. a despicable first amendment violation. but cnn political analyst maggie haberman points out that trump is facing a different reality from when he was going through the trial. he's not facing a reelection campaign. >> he has been elected to a
2:38 am
second term. >> constitutionally, that's all he can serve. so the political benefit to him in, you know, showing up in court and fighting for himself is maybe less than it would be otherwise. that having been said, he's very angry about these cases and that hasn't changed. >> he's very angry about this case in particular. >> all right. joining us now, cnn legal analyst, criminal defense attorney joey jackson. joey, good morning. always wonderful to see you. so what do we expect here? i mean, is this definitely going ahead? are there any other options for trump to get this delayed. and does he have to show up? >> good morning to you casey. so the reality is, is that he doesn't have to show up because the judge has indicated that it can be virtual. having said that, there's of course the possibility he won't even show up for that in terms of whether or not it moves forward, i think his team will continue to press and delay, to attempt to get this sentencing postponed, removed, et cetera. although i think ultimately,
2:39 am
casey, it's better for him to have the sentence in place. this way he can pursue his appeals while in office and get some measure of finality to this entire process. >> so what is the the real kind of implication here? what do you think that the judge is doing? because he's basically saying, okay, you're not going to have to serve any time. you're not going to have to really pay any penalty, but you are going to remain like this conviction is going to remain in force, right? >> absolutely. so there were a couple of decisions the judge could have made. a few, in fact. the first thing would have been to hold this in abeyance until after the president has served his term. the second thing the judge could have done was just simply discontinue the proceedings, not imposing sentence or otherwise dealing with it at all. the third thing is, what we're seeing is that the judge moving forward. and i think if you look at the judge's decision in terms of what the judge is doing, the judge is following the law from a legal perspective, like it or dislike it, just objectively speaking, it's the proper call. why?
2:40 am
number one, the judge has indicated that he wants to respect the jury's verdict. a jury of 12 have has decided back in may of 2024, the president was guilty. the judge said that he wants to honor that. number two, there's nothing in place for presidential elect immunity, right? when you're president, you get immunity. when you're president elect, you don't. number three, there's really only this portion casey left of the process. what portion? that sentencing. and so any issues in terms of the physical capacity of him, you know, in impairing his ability to serve, his mental ability to serve, all he has left is sentencing. and so, therefore, the judge said, let's go. final point. and that is in terms of the interest of justice, the judge saying there's no basis in which to dismiss it in the interest of justice, considering a multitude of factors, including the nature of respect for the criminal process and what it might do. and so, from a legal perspective, the judge seems to be on very solid ground. that having been said it, of course,
2:41 am
that is the judge's decision will be appealed through multiple levels of appeal. and let's see where the court, the higher courts, end up on it. i think, though, from a read of the decision, it comports with the law. it doesn't seem to be, you know, nonobjective or political. it seems to be a legal decision that has a firm basis in fact and well rooted in law. >> all right. joey jackson for us this morning, sir. always grateful for your perspective. thanks for being here. >> thanks, casey. >> all right. still ahead here on cnn this morning, the playoff picture officially set for the nfl. we'll show you which teams are now left standing as they fight for a super bowl title. and the suspect in the new year's day new orleans attack turned to technology to plan out his rampage. the device that he began using months before the tragedy. >> kobe, the making of a
