tv   The Inauguration of Donald Trump  CNN  January 20, 2025 8:00am-10:00am PST

8:00 am
government as a result of their wealth. and that's what the president was warning of. i just want to throw out another way of looking at this and the way people on the right are looking at this, as a way of trump celebrating american ingenuity, entrepreneurship, technological dominance because the truth is when it comes to tech companies in the world, american companies are the ones that are dominating the industry. but it is at such a crucial time when the government has to play a role in deciding what this looks like going forward and whether or not there are going to be guardrails on the power. >> there is bill clinton, former president of the united states and former secretary of state hillary clinton, who obviously ran for president in 2016 and lost to donald trump.
8:01 am
symbol, important moment celebrating american democracy. celebrating the peaceful transfer of power. the fact that the former first lady and secretary of state ÷÷hillary clinton is here to attend his inaugural. she was at his first inaugural as well. >> i would -- you are using celebration in a very generic sense. >> there is george w. bush and former first lady laura bush. there's here as well. again, celebration of american democracy and honoring. >> obligation,s. maybe not for them. i think for hillary clinton. >> not talking about a celebration of any man, but a celebration of the idea of america and the democracy. i think that's lara trump and her children. talk about her replacing marco rubio in the senate, but she withdrew her name from
8:02 am
consideration. >> there is barack obama. >> president barack obama. >> flying solo. >> michelle obama not attending today. shes did not attend the carter funeral saying she would prefer not to. >> so, obviously, she said she preferred not to. >> she didn't actually literally÷÷saying. i'm quoting. >> that is her absence which is certainly suggesting. you can still see from a wider shot those tech ceos. one of the things i also want to mention they're not alone. you see on the left lauren sanchez. oh, there's tim cook. not just them, they have their spouses and significant others. these are some prime seats. >> in an environment in which every single seat is accounted for, it really is something that they are in the room for this. i mean, not a lot of people can get seats to this. you've got 535 members of congress guaranteed
8:03 am
seats. everybody else has to earn one and these people, men, all of them, were able to get seats because of their cultivation of relationship with donald trump for the most part, happened after the election. >> i don't think the cab inet nominees have plus ones there. >> we are expecting the supreme court to come in at any moment. you are seeing at the back of the screen with the white coat and black scarf, susie wiles, the incoming chief of staff. kaitlan collins, what are we expecting to hear from president- elect trump as he delivers his inaugural speech? >> reporter: there is taylor greene. the speech is not going to speak highly. i want to know what we are looking at here with jeff bezos talking to the person standing by the ceo of google. that is howard lutnick.
8:04 am
he is the pick to be the commerce secretary. he doesn't have a lot of opposition, so he seems like he'll be confirmed. he will be in charge of imposing trum's tariffs trump's tariffs here.÷÷those are threatening the executives in the back of the room. speaking to why they have these good seats and why they wanted the prime seats, those are the people going to be making huge decisions that affect their ÷÷businesses in a massive way. another person in the room is the ceo of tiktok who is getting an executive order signed by donald trump to save his business in the united states. essentially rebuff bipartisan law and upheld by the supreme court. i also saw senator tom cotton sitting right there in the center of the lawmakers. he is actually in a chair, not up on stage where the cabinet officials are including pete hegseth on the phone.
8:05 am
senator tom cotton has broken p with trump on the tiktok executive order.÷÷if they can't divest, they should not be able to be used in the united states. he is a rare republican and some democrats have changed their tune on this, jake. it speaks to the different dynamics all at play in the ÷÷rotunda you are seeing here. all waiting on trump to give this speech and also see what he will do once he has powers of the presidency again. >> we see there elise stefanik. she is the nominee to be the ambassador to the united nations. kristi noem, governor of south carolina, nominated to the department of homeland security. i don't sense any of the nominees are in
8:06 am
trouble with the norm names nomination. marco rubio will be confirmed today, but pete hegseth for the secretary of defense, tulsi gabbard for director of national intelligence, robert f. kennedy jr., to the department of health and human services. i don't know that there aren't those for confirmation. here is the u.s. supreme court led by chief justice john roberts. second there was brett kavanaugh. they're not in order of seniority, obviously, because ÷÷brett kavanaugh. we have a former supreme court justice breyer at the end there. brett kavanaugh is second there because he will be administering the oath of office to vice president- elect jd vance. you see sonia sotomayor and gorsuch and amy
8:07 am
coney barrett ÷÷and bringing up the former justice breyer. >> as you were saying earlier, it might not be true that none of them are in jeopardy. matt gaetz had to withdrawal his nomination for attorney general. we have to see hearings for rfk jr. that will come up at some point. kash patel as well. there are some folks who are fairly controversial, but donald trump has kept republicans in line on most of the nominations and there's even the prospect that rfk jr. could get one or two democratic votes despite his advocacy of vaccine or anti- vaccine messages. some of which are just patently false, but this is the dynamic of the new washington and i think democrats now in the minority, they can't really do anything about. >> i would also caution it's not entirely a done deal
8:08 am
that tulsi gabbard is going to get confirmed. i'm saying that because the reporting from republican senators >> yeah. >> tulsi gabbard, of course, was once a democrat. so, there's some tension there, i think inherently in what she said and done in the past. >> we have been reporting and what i have been hearing and you guys as well, is concern based on private meetings about her readiness to be director of national intelligence. but yet, look, again, what we're looking at is what will ultimately likely be donald trump's cabinet and the people who are going to -- >> right. it's possible a couple might not make it through. i have yet to see evidence that will happen, but it is possible a couple might not make it through. as a general rule, we do expect them overwhelmingly to be confirmed. i think the secretary -- >> they're sitting -- i'm
8:09 am
sorry to interrupt. some of the tech giants and their spouses are sitting in front of members of the cabinet. they have better seats than people who are going to actually serve in donald trump's administration. knowing how much he pays attention to details, i can't imagine the president- elect wasn't involved in that. there's his adult children. >> the adult children of ÷÷president- elect trump. ivanka, don junior, tiffany, eric and baron. baron was 10 in 2017. he is now a college freshman at new york university. >> tiffany. >> looks so much like his dad. >> he's very tall. tiffany is expecting. she just recently got married. president-elect trump appointed her father-in- law to an official position. with donald trump, it
8:10 am
already has become clear that the cabinet is important, but more important are the people inside of the white house and perhaps more important still are the people outside of the government entirely. we are just looking at elon musk there who has donald trump's ear. trump is a business person first and foremost. he incredibly values the opinion, the esteem of wealthy business titans. those voices are going to be very important. that's why i'm not surprised to see them sitting where they are because in trump's world, there's the government and then ÷÷the almost kitchen cabinet of sorts of people on the outside who are going to be around him on speed dial. the recipients of text messages and things constantly over the next four years. when we talk about this stuff, ÷÷you can't just focus on people who have official titles when it comes to donald trump. >> very well. we have been making the point the tech ceos are not
8:11 am
just in donald trump's construct. geniuses. we don't have that many to honor and support our geniuses. they are not just business people with tens of billions of dollars of value, they're individuals who control the flow of information throughout the world which also includes the flow of information that can be dangerous such as information that might cite a riot. sometimes false information that results in the deaths of individuals. i'm talking about worldwide now. that's the challenge for this information age. how does one avoid censorship while also maintaining a healthy attitude toward facts and truth? that's a real balancing act and how these tech ceos meet that is the challenge of our age. >> can i offer one other thing? this
8:12 am
is going to be an economy that is shaped by artificial intelligence. all of those people are involved÷÷in that. when we talk about that, we're ÷÷talking about american jobs and we're talking about what the economy looks like. who is going to be able to work? what kinds of jobs are they able to have? these are pivotal decisions that these people are going to be making as they -- as they develop this technology. so, they have an enormous amount of power. it will affect the lives of every single person even if you never touch a social media platform in your life. >> here are the in laws of the trump children. you see ara trump. you see the am bassadorship. kaitlan collins, tell us what you are seeing from emancipation hall. >> reporter: jake, remarkable to see the family dynamics. jared kushner had a huge role in the trump first
