>> the most public exchange of accusations between kyiv and washington that we've seen yet. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy lashing back at president donald trump after trump falsely accused ukraine of starting the war with russia. in addition to asking president trump and his team to be more truthful, his he's accusing donald trump of parroting russian disinformation. white house and kremlin officials met this week to discuss plans to end the war, but ukraine was not a part of that. cnn's nick paton walsh is joining us now from kyiv. look, this is the first time we're really seeing zelenskyy having some very strong words about the president of the united states. what are you hearing? >> reporter. >> yeah, and look, in truth, zelenskyy is reacting to two
6:03 am
incorrect statements made by president trump yesterday that ukraine essentially started the war. it was russia that invaded in 2022, unprovoked, and that his poll rating is at about 4%. now, you know, ultimately in wartime, many argue here that a leaders poll rating isn't massively of consequence. they have to get on with the job of trying to win a war. but he argued back zelenskyy that actually his poll rating is about 57%. and indeed some of his officials suggested that's even higher than some u.s. presidents currently in the white house. and they've said zelenskyy's team zelenskyy himself, that their work in the two weeks ahead to try and put out polling to suggest that's the case. but it is remarkable to hear the stark words from president zelenskyy today suggesting that hungarian slovakian officials may be behind feeding trump. these are pro-russian officials in europe feeding trump incorrect information. here's what he had to say. >> i believe the united states of america helped putin to come out of years of isolation. i would like trump's team to be
6:04 am
more truthful. all of this definitely doesn't affect ukraine in a positive way. they are letting putin out of isolation. and i think putin and russia are really happy because they are involved in discussions. and yesterday there were signals that they are the victims. that is something new. >> now, he said that this was essentially a definitive disinformation space in which president trump found himself right now. and he went on, when asked by me about security guarantees, given that the united states won't let them join nato or send troops on the ground here, what indeed would work? and he said, listen, we urgently need anti air defense missiles here. patriots to take out the ballistic missiles that tried to hit the capital and around the country on a nightly basis. so a real plea for urgent help civilians dying because of those strikes. but also i think for the first time here in kyiv, seeing president zelenskyy having to confront incorrect
6:05 am
information put out by the white house yesterday and doing that very much head on, what that means for the discussions ahead with trump's ukraine and russia envoy, general keith kellogg, who arrived this morning at a railway station and said he wanted to talk security guarantees but was here primarily to listen. we don't know. i think a lot has happened prior to kellogg's visit already between the u.s. and russia at that summit in riyadh, and there are very nervous minds here in kyiv. >> absolutely. and that includes the people of of ukraine, very concerned about what they are hearing this morning from the president of the united states. nick paton walsh, thank you for your great reporting there. in a very cold ukraine. john. >> all right. with us now is congressman jason crow, a democrat from colorado, on the armed services and intelligence committee. congressman, great to have you here in person. we just heard president zelenskyy say that donald trump, president trump has taken russia out of isolation. he also said directly that president trump lives in a world of disinformation. listen. >> mangione. >> unfortunately, president
6:06 am
trump, i have great respect for him as a leader of a nation that we have great respect for the american people who always support us. unfortunately, lives in this disinformation space. >> what do you think about that, congressman? >> well, donald trump not only lives in a world of russian propaganda and disinformation, but he lives in an era of a world of personal grievance. right? so much of what he does revolves around perceived slights, perceived personal grievances. the problem with that is that when you are dealing with national security, matters of peace and war. literally the security of the european continent and the american people dealing with all of these matters based on personal grievance is extremely dangerous for americans. >> we heard from sergey lavrov, one of the negotiators in saudi arabia, who said, quote, trump, i think is the first western leader to publicly and openly say that the cause of ukrainian conflict was efforts of the previous administration to expand nato. no western leader has actually said that before. so that is already a signal that
6:07 am
he understands our position. >> well, if we have vladimir putin and sergey lavrov agreeing with donald trump or saying that he understands them, there's a couple of things going on there. number one, vladimir putin and sergey lavrov are war criminals. they are liars. and they are the ones that started this war. and they are never to be trusted. like we've known putin for a long time. he's been on the scene for decades. we know that he lies. we know that he's aggressive. we know that he can never be trusted. and he breaks promises over and over and over again. so donald trump thinks that he can placate them, that he can try to make some deal that actually isn't backed by security guarantees and power. he is lying to himself. >> based on the statements that we've heard from lavrov, from putin, from president trump. if i just played those two in a vacuum, whose side would you say that president trump is on? >> well, i mean, clearly, you have to think that donald trump is moving towards the russians, right? there's a long history, actually, of donald trump saying things to to appease vladimir
6:08 am
putin, echoing russian propaganda. he is surrounded by people in his administration that echo russian propaganda. you have tucker carlson, whose people are in every facet of the trump administration, his supporters, even his family members. and tucker carlson literally went to russia to sit down with vladimir putin into disseminate his propaganda. so it's very dangerous for us. and that's why the american people need to understand what's going on with their national security right now, and that ukraine is not ukraine is not a charity case for us. we're just not doing this out of the goodness of our heart. we support ukraine because u.s. national security and our economy rely on it. >> where are your republican colleagues this morning who were very much supportive of president zelenskyy and ukraine when russia invaded almost three years ago, have traditionally been very hard on russia. and before that, the soviet union. >> well, i just got back from
6:09 am
the munich security conference, which is the world's largest international security conference, and i went on a bipartisan congressional delegation with dozens of members of congress, republicans and democrats. i spent a lot of time we fly over there together. we go out to dinner together, and they will voice to me privately that they are deeply concerned with this rhetoric, deeply concerned with the approach of the trump administration, how they have sidelined ukraine and these negotiations, and the message that sends. but unfortunately, it's private, right. we need them to come out in public. we need courage. we need them to push back. unfortunately, i'm not holding my breath here because i have learned in my time in congress not to expect courage from so many of these republicans. >> you're a veteran. you know, you've served if you were a ukrainian soldier right now on the front lines, trying to push russia out of your country, how would you feel if the president of the united states, who had been supportive, a president, had been supportive of their efforts, just said that that you started the war? >> yeah. well, i mean, i have been to war. i know what it's like to be in those foxholes.
6:10 am
the loneliness, the desperation. and i don't need to actually guess what those ukrainians on the front lines are thinking. i talk to them, i know them, i'm friends with them and their families. they they are in despair right now in so many ways. they're not stopping fighting. don't get me wrong, right. they feel lonely. they feel abandoned by their friends and their allies because of the rhetoric coming out of the trump administration. but one thing i've also learned about the ukrainian people is they don't stop, right? they are tough as nails, they are courageous, they are brave, and they're not going to stop. >> they fight like hell. all right, congressman jason crow, nice to see you in person. appreciate you being here. kate. >> now to the brand new power play. likely teeing up another legal fight. president trump in a new executive order is now trying to exert new control over independent government agencies. agencies that were created by congress to not come under a president's thumb. these are agencies like the sec, the fcc, the ftc, alphabet soup, but
6:11 am
independent, all focused on protecting consumers tasked with things like regulating wall street, regulating communications, radio, tv, cable, also tasked with protecting consumers. the white house now wants to require these agencies to submit proposed regulation changes for white house review first, to make sure it's all in line with the president's policies and priorities. cnn's alayna treene has more from the white house for us. what is the latest right now on how they see this rolling out? now? >> well, kate, i mean, just to also give the big picture here with this sweeping executive order that we saw the president sign yesterday. i mean, this is just the latest example, really, of both president donald trump himself, but also many of his close allies within the white house and the trump administration more broadly, to try and centralize the power of the white house and really push the boundaries for the power of the executive branch. this has long been a goal not only of the presidents. we saw him do this
6:12 am
during his first administration, but also several of his allies, including people like russell vought, the director of the office of management and budget, who actually, with this executive order is going to have a sweeping and supervising authority over some of these agencies. but just to get into your exact question about what exactly this order is doing, it's essentially trying to bring in independent agencies, agencies that we should be clear that congress decades ago established to be separate from direct white house control. it would essentially bring these independent regulatory agencies underneath white house control. as you mentioned, you said a lot of these are agencies that do regulations as it relates to trade, the economy, communications, including the federal trade commission, the federal communications commission, the securities and exchange commission, all things, again, that have traditionally operated independently from the executive branch. now, to get to my point about how all of this is really going back to, you know, donald trump's efforts to
6:13 am
really give more power, expand the power of the executive branch. we kind of heard him, you know, suggest some of this while signing this executive order yesterday. take a listen to how he put it. >> don't forget, i got elected on the basis of making our government stronger and smaller because we have millions of people that obviously they're paying millions of people that shouldn't be paid. >> now, kate, also, just to get into some of the nitty gritty of this order, you mentioned some of this, but it requires that independent agencies submit their proposed regulations to the white house, specifically to ensure, in part, that this aligns with the president's overall agenda. it's similar to what we've seen with other executive orders, really, the president trying to reshape the workforce and the government in his image. one other quick thing as well is that this is very likely to face big legal challenges, potentially even the supreme court, like with other orders as well, that have faced
6:14 am
legal pushback. this actually might be a fight that the trump administration wants to be at the supreme court, so they could ultimately try and change the laws around this and give him more power than presidents and his predecessors had previously had. kate. >> elena, thank you very much. sara. >> all right. ahead. republicans in both the house and senate are determined to pass the president's agenda, but their competing plans headed for a potential showdown. and a federal judge gives doge the green light, delivering a blow to democrats efforts to block federal data from elon musk's team. plus, pope francis said to be in good spirits as he remains in the hospital battling pneumonia in both lungs. an update on the pope's health is ahead. >> our thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives were tragically taken. the dots all start to connect together. >> somebody did this purposely to these people.

we're not sure if we're going to get a decision on that today. but certainly we're going to hear a lot more details come out in a court of law. from what we have seen spill out in the public. sarah. >> and you never know if more resignations are on the way. there are at least a dozen people surrounding the mayor and the mayor's office who have resigned over all this. kara scannell, thank you so much. it will be an interesting day in court. john. >> all right. new this morning clashes on capitol hill. has republican senate and republican house lawmakers work on competing strategies to advance president trump's agenda through congress. with the senate maybe moving first and more quickly, let's get to lauren fox, who is on capitol hill for the very latest on this. so where do things stand? >> yeah, let. >> me set the stage up here on capitol hill. >> right now in. >> the house of representatives. they are on a week long recess. >> before the break, they were. >> able to pass out of their committee. a budget resolution that. >> gives a blueprint, really a guide for. >> what they could do through a
6:23 am
process. in the united states senate that would allow them. to advance trump's agenda. now, the. >> house wants. >> to move forward. >> with one big bill. essentially. >> what they would. >> include is a roadmap. >> to include tax. >> reform and a renewal. >> of those 2017. >> tax cuts that. >> expire at the end of. >> the year. they also want to raise the debt ceiling for two years, as well as provide more money for the border and defense, and give a roadmap to billions of dollars in cuts in the senate. they are going a very different route. they are in town this week, and we heard last night they are already trying to advance their own bill on the floor. this is another budget resolution that is very different than the one that the house passed out of committee with the senate wants to do, is they essentially want to just create these two different bills. they want to deal with tax later. so their budget blueprint provides really an outline for them to just deal with immigration at this moment.
6:24 am
and defense, they are not dealing with the debt ceiling. they are not trying to get into tax reform in this package. instead, this is just a budget resolution to get them sort of the bare minimum, get trump the money that he wants to have in this moment. and they say that this is the best way forward, because they're starting to believe that perhaps the house won't have the votes, given the narrow majority to pass their blueprint. we should remind people at home that republicans control the house. republicans control the senate, but they have two very different views of what trump needs in this moment. so the senate, we expect, will move forward with this budget resolution in upcoming days, will likely pass it by the end of the week. then they will have to do the hard work of trying to pass what is known in the united states senate. and i apologize for using the word a reconciliation bill, which essentially just gives them the ability to pass legislation with a simple majority threshold in the united states senate, rather than a 60 vote threshold, which,
6:25 am
of course, would require democratic votes. they'll be able to do this with just republican votes, john. and that's the most important thing here. >> yeah, it is complicated, but simply right now it's easy to say the senate and the house, the republicans not on the same page. and when it comes to control in the house, the question is, is it a capital c control or a small c control? we'll see if they have either. lauren fox great to see you. terrific explanation kate. >> coming up for us, a new legal battle over doge tax and business groups now suing to block the doge team from gaining access to sensitive irs data. and asap rocky is a free man. the emotional reaction inside court and the moment he learned the verdict. >> not guilty. >> it's the news. >> welcome back. >> but it's also kind of not the news. >> we don't fact check him. >> we don't care, man. why tell the information on this show so terrible? >> have i got news for you

6:31 am
all of these cases where they're being asked to curtail what doge is up to. and judge chutkan, she did preside over donald trump's criminal case that is now dismissed related to the 2020 election, but she's a pretty experienced judge on the federal court in d.c., and she and two of her other colleagues on that same bench, they keep saying that they can't actually step in right now to stop doge because there just isn't enough evidence and enough understanding of what doge is doing to show that people are being harmed. so in this case, the judge, chutkan, said she was not going to grant a temporary restraining order against doge yesterday. what she was looking at was a challenge from a number of democratic state attorneys general, and they wanted her to do a broad curtailing of doj's work. they wanted her to tell doge step out of personnel decisions at agencies, and also don't get in to any software
6:32 am
systems at a whole slew of federal agencies, including the department of education, health and human services, the department of energy and judge chutkan, she said. there's just not enough here at this time for her to know that there's imminent, irreparable harm and to meet the legal standard for her to tell doge, stop it. so that is where a lot of these cases are right now, as the judges are looking on what to do with doge on a temporary basis as these cases move forward to the meatier legal arguments about elon musk and the ability he has to do things in the federal government right now, the judges have to be hands off because they just don't find that the law says they can get involved at this point. kate. >> at this point, let's see. it's good to see you, caitlin. thank you so much for tracking it, sara. >> all right. thank you. kate. the next target for elon musk and doge the irs. they're looking to gain access to the

>> it's protected by the privacy act. >> it's protected. >> by, you know, tax tax act. following watergate. and it's illegal. so it's it's why we joined democracy forward in this in this lawsuit. >> who normally has access to this information. i mean, we're talking about tax information here. so it's everything from where you live, how much you make, how many children you have, who you are married to, and the list goes on. >> absolutely. >> so what what doge is looking for, and this is kind of the private data mining. operation associated with elon musk is access to bank statements, income statements, social security information for small businesses, for individual taxpaying americans. and it's totally unprecedented. there are folks who have worked at the irs for many, many years, department heads that don't even have this level of access to data. so it's something that we need to to end immediately to make sure
6:35 am
that the trust in this key institution doesn't erode anymore. >> what do you think the doge guys are doing and are going to do with the data that worries you enough to to join this lawsuit? >> well, you know, so, so much of the trump administration and mr. musk have talked about the need to drain the swamp. but this move is stocking the swamp with more alligators. this is a man with a history of self-dealing. so you can imagine that with access to the tax information of his competitors, access to the to the financial information of political rivals that he would likely use that information against folks. so it's not my space to speculate, but we can we can certainly look at the track record of the folks that are making these decisions. and for what? what what can come from having this sort of
6:36 am
unprecedented access to data? >> do you have any sense of what employees at the irs are being told at this point when it comes to to doge and what their what their plans are? >> no. as the leader of main street alliance national network of 30,000 plus small business owners, i focused on the testimony and the feedback of our small business owners and entrepreneurs across the country. and what we're hearing from them is that, you know, americans don't agree on a lot of things, but we all agree on the need to protect our data, and we don't like these incursions into into our privacy. so this isn't just a left right democrat republican thing. this is a matter of one unstable billionaire having access to the private financial information of every single american and small business owner. there's a reason why no other american ceo has this level of access to other business's financial information. it's mad. >> and certainly he has a lot of business with the u.s.

>> welcome back. >> have i got news for you? news saturday on cnn. >> this morning, the vatican says that pope francis had what they call a peaceful night. there have been prayers all around the world as he has been hospitalized. for what the vatican now says is double pneumonia. primary care physician and public health specialist doctor matthew is with us now. doc, thanks so much for being with us by called a double pneumonia. but bilateral pneumonia. how does that change things? >> well. >> that. >> actually makes conditions. >> worse, john. in an elderly. >> person like. >> the pope who is. >> close. to 90 years. >> of age, we know that. >> part of his lung was. >> removed as a young kid. he already has had multiple. bouts of bronchitis. >> just having. >> pneumonia in one lobe is tough enough, much less to think. >> about his entire both. lungs infected. >> that puts him at high. risk of, you know, fatality. >> to be honest, he needs to be watched.
6:43 am
>> very closely. one minute the patient is fine and. >> the next minute the patient is. >> rolled into the icu. so we have to be very careful with the pope. >> so the vatican keeps using the phrase complex clinical picture. is that medical terminology or public relations speak? >> yeah, i think it's. >> it's really more public relations talk in the medical setting. we're not going to necessarily. >> say a complex. >> polymicrobial. what that really means is that the pope not only. >> has perhaps. >> a viral infection, he has a bacterial infection as well. and in very few patients, john, if you are extremely immunocompromised, you can also get a fungal infection. and i think also what a lot of viewers are confused about is the vatican says he has a complex medical condition, but he's sitting and, you know, reading the newspaper and he's in good spirits. to me as a physician, that is extremely good news because we're always taught in
6:44 am
medical school. john, don't focus on the labs. look at the patient. how's the patient breathing? what's his oxygen level and blood pressure? >> you brought up the fact that he's in good spirits reading the newspaper. they also said he had breakfast. the fact that he's eating, does that indicate he's not intubated? if intubation is even something you do use to treat pneumonia. >> yeah, 100% in the elderly. just like i said, they can take a turn for the worse so quickly. in fact, 30 to 50% of patients in the icu setting are usually patients that are elderly, immunocompromised. and most of those patients about 50% or higher will have a double pneumonia. so this is really not unexpected in the pope. once again, his condition can be very volatile. it can it can really go from hour to hour in terms of how he's doing and and how he's faring. >> how do you treat double pneumonia, how you treat any pneumonia, but particularly double pneumonia? >> yeah. so it depends on
6:45 am
exactly what the organism is for most adults, like like you and i, john, if we get pneumonia, we would have what's called a community acquired pneumonia. and that's usually a bacterial pneumonia. but in the case of the pope, i'm thinking perhaps initially when he had bronchitis, he probably had the flu or a viral illness that lowered his immune system. and now he has a virus and possibly a, you know, a bacteria as well. so you would use antibacterials antibiotics. perhaps you will need oxygen and also steroids for inflammation of the lungs. >> so we are to a certain extent speculating on a lot of this because we are getting limited information, very controlled information, i should say, from the vatican. what questions? if you could get the answer to any question right now just by asking, what would you ask? >> i think the first question i would ask would be, how is the pope doing? what's his oxygen level? how active is he? because a lot of times in medical school, you know, you want to paint the picture of what the
6:46 am
patient looks like when they walk in the room a good number of times in the hospital or at work, i will look at a patient's age and look at their conditions, maybe their white count. and i'm walking in thinking this patient is sick. but if the patient is sitting upright and saying, hey, doctor matthew, i'm feeling good, that is almost always a good sign. but if i had to ask one question, it would be how alert is the pope? is he moving around? is he asking for food? >> these are all good questions. i had double pneumonia once, knocked me on my, and i was nowhere near 88. this is a serious thing. doctor matthew, thank you so much for being with us this morning, sarah. >> all right. thank you. john. all right. ahead. why sean combs is blaming racism for how prosecutors are charging him and what he wants a judge to do about that. that story and more ahead. >> the lead with jake tapper today at 4:00 on cnn. >> pick me, me, me. >> you're still paying for that one.

6:52 am
courtroom reaction, and we could hear some of it. what can you tell us about what happened there? >> absolutely. >> and that was really. >> a stunning. moment from. >> the courtroom. sarah, as you saw there. asap rocky, quite literally jumping through the pews into the arms of his superstar partner, rihanna. not something that you typically see in. >> a courtroom. >> you're not supposed. >> to jump through the gallery there, but you can certainly. understand why the rapper. >> is so excited. >> and so relieved because sarah, he was facing up to 24 years behind. >> bars if he. >> was convicted. now, asap rocky, he had. >> been facing. >> two charges. >> that stemmed from. an altercation in 2021. >> in hollywood between him and his former. >> friend named a$ap relli. >> a$ap relli was alleging that rocky shot him. you saw photos during the trial that his knuckles were grazed and a little bit bloody, but rocky's. defense said no, it was actually
6:53 am
a prop gun and that he carries regularly with him for security, and he was acting out in self-defense. so obviously the jury siding with rocky and his defense and fully acquitting him. >> it's the first time i've heard someone use a prop gun for security, but all those interesting details. all right, let's move on to another case that has certainly caught the public's attention. we're seeing an update in the case of that blake lively versus actor and director justin baldoni. what are the new allegations that are being brought in that case? >> so sarah, overnight and when i say overnight, quite literally just before the clock struck midnight, which was a deadline that the judge overseeing this case had set for blake lively to file her amended complaint. so she filed a amended complaint that is 141 pages long. she added 48 pages to her initial complaint that she first filed back in december. now, for those who have not been following this case, even though it is the most
6:54 am
trending case happening in pop culture for really the past two months, back in december, blake lively filed a suit and she alleged that she was sexually harassed on the set of the film. it ends with us by the director and her costar, justin baldoni. but that's not all, she says. she wasn't only subjected to sexual harassment, but then that she was subject to career retaliation and baldoni's team smeared her behind the scenes in the press. now, in this updated, amended filing, the big bombshell here, according to blake lively, is that there were other women on the set who were also made to feel uncomfortable by baldoni's alleged behavior. blake lively claims in this new updated complaint that another female costar who is unnamed in this complaint that she actually reported this behavior to sony, which was the distributor behind this film. now i have reached
6:55 am
out to baldoni's team. we have not heard back, but again, this development coming overnight and you know, it was late and it's still early on the west coast where his attorneys are based. but you see there that they say that he did not hold himself accountable after this was reported, and instead that he used a louder voice. it goes on to say to silence blake lively and anyone else who may have spoken up. >> and i know you reached out. they have also been warned by the judge that this should not be played out in the media, and almost that they there might be some sort of of response by the judge if they speak to members of the media. now let's move on to the sean combs case. there is a new move by him and his team to dismiss these allegations. very serious ones indeed. what do you know? there? >> yes, very serious allegations, as we know. combs is facing three federal charges. his criminal trial is expected to begin this may. and last night, his team filing a motion to dismiss one of those charges,
6:56 am
which is transportation to engage in prostitution. now get this, sarah, the reasoning is combs defense claims that he has been subjected to a racist prosecution. now, this is not the first time that they have alluded to this. actually, last year in an interview with tmz, they said that this whole case is about trying to take down a black man. but i want to read you just a quick part from the new filing last night. it says, quote, mr. combs has been singled out because he is a powerful black man. he is being prosecuted for conduct that regularly goes unpunished. sarah. >> all right. elizabeth wagmeister, thank you so much for that reporting. appreciate it. >> ooh, exhausting. >> a lot of information there at the end. >> yeah. >> true. thank you so much for joining. >> we're not touching it. >> okay. >> cnn news central cnn newsroom is up next. >> we are living with afib, and over half a million of us have left blood thinners behind for life. we've cut our stroke risk
