this is happening in fairbanks, alaska. we have our entire team, part of the best political team, candy crowley in washington, she will guide us through this event. criswell ch is our all-platform journalist there on the ground. she is saying this is a farewell. some are saying, hey, it is possibly an indication of what is to come. hello, everyone. i'm don lemon. let's get to it. candy crowley standing by. the stage is set. sarah palin is there. what do you think? >> i think we are not going to learn a lot about the overarching question here and that is is he going to get back into elected politics. i think we won't know that answer for a year or 18 months. i think she is a better politician than a lot of people give sarah palin credit for being. i think she understands how to
7:01 pm
play the options. i think that is what she is doing right now. >> for folks who are saying this is the end of her politically her stepping down. i wouldn't bet the farm on it. she is very popular. some people like the renegade, what was the term she used, rogue? >> i think she said renegade. >> i remember barracuda. >> she was a self-professed maverick. she and john mccain were two mavericks. >> right. exactly. you're right. let me tell you something, not to just assume this would be an easy road if she wanted to run for president because her poll numbers are way down even among republicans. there are huge doubts whether she understands complex issues. abc/"washington post" poll 57% people think she doesn't understand complex issues. she did not help herself by quitting a job with 18 months left to go, an elected job.
7:02 pm
but i've seen so many turn arounds, i mean, just go back to john mccain when we all sort of wrote him off and the next thing you know he is the nominee. it is tough to write people off. >> candy, can you stick around. i want to get to the person on the ground. sarah palin about to take the stage in fairbanks. chris welch is at pioneer park. >> the audience is quiet. the invocation is taking place. looking at the program on the rundown. the national anthem, honor guard and palin will have her address. >> while they are doing the invocation and anthem we will come back to you. do we have candy? candy, we'll get back to chris. we should be respectful and not
7:03 pm
break in. candy, finish your thought. >> never fails the anchor comes to you with a national anthem or a prayer. >> thanks, candy. >> welcome aboard, chris. yeah. i really think it is hard to look at someone and say they are done, richard nixon, john mccain. it is a tough road. the road she is headed down, i'm going to help other politicians. i'm going to raise money. she's going to write a book. so she is going to audiences that really like her. she's going to give speeches. those are high-paying with someone with her profile. all of those things people do along the road to becoming a contender for their party's ticket. you certainly could read it that way. it is a great way to raise money
7:04 pm
and a great way to make money. >> absolutely. >> you are writing a book. it could be when your time is there it is your time. she is hot right now as a politician. she can make a lot of money making speeches. her book is going to make her a lot of money. and that may be enough for her. >> just to give an idea of what is going on, there you see the honor guard walking in. i want to tell you what you are seeing, the music is from ft. wainright. this is a processional. the invocation is happening. there is the honor guard and they will have the national anthem and then the farewell address coming up just moments away. we have our candy crowley

in the end, she can certainly try to run for president. there are a lot of people who want to on the republican side in the next couple of years. she has a wide open field and there is a place for her in it. it is a tough go. there needs to be rehabilitation so far in the entire country and inside the republican party. the conservative core, the evangelicals, she is hugely popular. i went to indiana for a pro-life, those were anti-abortion, dinner and fund-raiser. she was a speaker there and she just wowed the crowd. they loved her. she has a strong base in the conservative core. >> the republicans are looking for a leader, someone to put out

and the current administration say they are aware of sarah palin and she is not on their radar. 2012 is a long way off. how much are they paying attention to what sarah palin will do or say next? >> i'm sure they have more than a passing interest. i do believe they have a lot more on their plate. listen, the best way president obama can run in 2012 is do his job now. those are the ones helping him who said we are not paying attention. i think that is true. i'm sure they are aware of it and nothing but a passing interest. >> he has the foot in the door and the best way to take care of it. chris welch is standing by.

alaskans with strength of character advancing our state. i remember on that december day, we took the oath to uphold our state constitution and it was written right here in fairbanks by very wise pioneers. we shared the vision for government that they ground in that document. our founders wrote, all political power is inherent in the people. all government originates with the people, it's founded upon their will only and it is instituted for the good of the people as a whole. their remarkably succinct words guided us in all of our efforts in serving you and putting you first. we have done our best to fulfill promises on alaska day when i first asked for the honor of serving you. remember then our state so desired and so deserved ethics reform. we promised it and now it is the law.

ironically, it needs additional reform to stop blatant abuse from partisan operatives. i hope the lawmakers will continue that reform. we promised you that you would finally see a fair return on your alaskan own natural resources. so we built a new oil and gas appraisal system, an equitable formula to issue in competition and transparency and protection for alaskans and the producers. as incentivizes new exploration and it is the exploration that is our future. it opens oil basins and ensures the people will never be taken advantage of again. don't forget, alaskans, you are the resource owners per our constitution. last year when oil prices

and we have come so far in just 50 years. we are no longer a frontier outpost on the periphery of the world's greatest nation, now as a contributor and securer of america, we can attain our destiny in the promise of our motto, north to the future. the pressing issue of our time is energy independence because there is an inherent link between energy and security and energy and prosperity. alaska will lead with energy. we will prove you can be both pro-development and pro-environment because no one loves their clean air and their land and their wildlife and their water more than an alaskan. we will protect it.
7:29 pm
yes, america must look north to the future for security, for energy independence and for our strategic location on the globe. alaska is the gatekeeper of the continent. so we are here today at a changing of the guard. now, people who know me and they know how much i love this state, some still are choosing not to hear why i made the decision to chart a new course to advance the state. and it should be so obvious to you. it is because i love alaska this much, sir, that i feel it is my duty to avoid the unproductive, typical politics as usual lame duck session in one's last year
7:30 pm
in office. how does that benefit you? with this decision now i will be able to fight even harder for you, for what is right and for truth. and i have never felt you need a title to do all that. so as we all move forward together let's vow to keep championing alaska, to advocate responsible development and smaller government and freedom. when i took the oath to serve you i promised, remember, i promised to steadfastly and doggedly guard the interest of this great state like a grizzly guards her cubs. i will keep that vow wherever the road may lead.
