i respect the man a great deal. [ inaudible question ] >> there was no tension. no tension. >> did you have a great conversation? >> we did. it was business but discussing it like two gentlemen instead of fighting it out either in a physical sense or in the mental sense in a court of public opinion. >> president obama didn't want to drink and dish. no on camera comment from him. just a brief statement thanking profess oor sergeant crowley an pro fersor gates for a friendly conversation. earlier, the president did try to down play the whole thing. >> i notice this is a beer summit. this is not a summit. it is three folks having a drink at the end of the day and hopefully giving people an opportunity to listen to each other. >> and giving the pundits a chance to talk about it all day

tonight's newsmaker, president obama, leader of the free world and tonight host of what was supposed to look like a casual beer, never mind that this happy hour with professor henry lewis gates and sergeant crowley and joe biden was watched around the world and has been talked about for nearly a week before anyone even took a sip. just minutes ago, sergeant crowley said that he and

professor gates will meet again in the future. >> what was the conference? >> it was a positive step in moving forward as opposed to reliving the events of the last couple weeks in an effort to move the city of cambridge and two individuals in this event but the whole country to move beyond this and view this as the basis of a meaningful discussion in the future. >> even if this does mark a turning point for two men in massachusetts, still a lot of broader questions here. will this symbolic gesture really do anything to end the debate over race, racial profiling in this country or at least try to move it forward a little bit? we're going to bring in npr contributor john ridly and former education secretary bill bennett. we've also got some clevelasomem bashir jones joining us. how many times did we hear this described as a teachable moment? so did we learn anything? >> you know, i would hope that

these two gentlemen, professor gates and sergeant crowley probably learned something interactsing with each other. these are two guys that should have known better, i think one reacted poorly, the other overreacted. but where we are now with this beer summit, i know the president doesn't like that, this is unteachable. this is no longer a situation that most people would find them sneflz a similar situation can even relate to. so, no, i hope they mean something. i think this one is off the teachable chart. >> so you think the president mishandled it? >> i don't think the president mishandled it. i think it was a good idea. he got dragged into something that was beyond the white house. i think it was good to say let's sit down. again, as you said at the top of this, campbell this is sort of become a circus for the chattering classes to talk about more than a quiet moment for people to reflect. >> bill, with you were pretty critical of the president going into this. can you see anything that came out of this?

>> who is defending the free world with the president and vice president sitting there? i guess it's the marines, fbi and the police so we're okay. he was stupid, describing their behavior as acting stupidly. now he had to cover the stuff. he had to make this big deal, bring them into the white house so that things would -- >> bill? i think i lost bill's satellite there. all right. we're going to go back to him if we can get it back up to let him finish making his point. let me bring bashir into this. i know your listeners are kr critical of the president. explain. >> i think the issue is that when it comes to african-american issues, president obama kind of stepped back on us. and i think that whether -- fit was wrong, it was wrong. he should speak out against it. and a lot of the listeners were upset. i think we also need to understand that it's bigger than just dr. henry lewis gates and

officer crowley's personal relationship. it's about the bigger issue which is that this type of situation happens allst time. and the fe very fact that president obama had to step back, show that we're not being truthful about the problem. if we're looking for the solution, we have to be truth nall a problem exists. and we're not ready to be truthful. >> john, are expectations of president obama when it comes to race, i mean he is fair. let's be honest. this will be a very different conversation if we were talking about a white president needing this conversation or this discussion. >> i don't think a white president -- i don't think george bush would have been asked about what he thought about the situation. i don't think a white president would have been asked about michael jackson. but he is being dragged into the discussion. dragged into discussion that's are below the white house to begin w i think people really do believe that because president obama is president he can solve all the issues black or white. he can get all of us as americans to get us to a place where we're beyond racism.

he can lift up all black people so people that are bigots don't see us as a monolith imgroup. i can't solve all the problems. he has enough problem selling health care let alone racism. >> what he needs to do, if he needs to address all problems. accident need to overlook the problem that exists in the african-american community. he has to address it. and the very fact he had to say it was unfortunate that he said it shows that we're not where we need to be. >> all right. let me go back to bill bennett. we did get his satellite back and let him finish making his point. bill, are you with us? >> yeah, sure. look, he wasn't dragged into this. he dragged himself kicking and screaming into this. stupid mistake. and so then we have to go through this whole series and now all the rituals and symbols. well, it was a huge mistake. they didn't act stupidly. the only person that acted stupidly is -- >> may i make my statement? >> bill, i want bill to at least make his point. and then we can discuss your

now time tore to night's newsmaker. tonight, it is joe jackson, michael's father back in the headlines after a bombshell interview with newsone.com. listen for yourself. >> let me ask you a question. if you were in michael's life, you would sti would he still be alive today? >> of course. i was told from people, from friends, if i don't goet to michael, he won't be with us long. and i called and i just didn't imagine to see him -- as a matter of fact, i wouldn't go and see him laying up there. i didn't want to remember him like that.

nope. i wanted to remember him by the dancing on stage. >> he was your boy. >> my son. >> your son's legacy is first your legacy. but whenever you say -- what does that mean -- what does the legacy of the jacksons, what does it mean to be a jackson? >> to me, to be a jackson is a jackson lien. my father care mid the name. you know, we were the only one this had an a-model ford. we were in the -- '28 or something. our forge was a professor at school. and we were the only family that had a car. everybody else had those horses and mules pulling wagons. we had an a-model ford. they called him professor

jackson. >> so many stories, so many things. but the other day michael may have had another child. omar is his name. everyone is like he was sitting right there next to rebbie. and then everyone is trying to connect dots. did you know that was michael's other son? >> yes. i knew he had another son, yes, i did. >> he looks like a jackson. >> oh, yes. he looks like a jackson. he acts like a jackson. he can dance like a jackson. this boy is a fantastic dancer. as a matter of fact, he teaches dancing. yes. >> so maybe set future of the king. >> i don't know. i can't say that yet. until i see it happen. >> so just who is omar bonnie?

we saw the norwegian rapper in the front row. he was it issing there with the family. as a child, he traveled with jackson. court records show that he was living at neverland in 2003. that is when the estate was raded during jackson's child molestation case. but none of that, of course, proved that he is michael's secret son. now he has been quoted denying it. we called his agent for reaction today. we didn't get a reply. so should we believe joe jackson when he's been estranged from his son for years? now it's a question for the man whoint viewed joe, chief content officer for newsone joining us. also james walker who knows the jackson family. and he's with us as well. he's been with us a lot. smokey, i mean you know. this joe jackson has been marginalized from the family for the most part. why should we believe anything he says? >> you know, it's been hard to believe joe jackson because he's been on the red carpet. he's been vacate of sound bites. but the man i met when i went in to have a conversation -- we had a two hour conversation.

the question about him was my very last one. after a long oral history we had together where he exposed many things and very honest with me about his whole life story. and there is no reason to not believe joe jackson. he is not crazy. he is not inarticulate. he is a smart, very caring man. the man i met was a father. the man i met was a father who is grieving and who is hurting from the loss of his son. and that was a side of him that i didn't expect to have him reveal to me in our interview. but it was apparent on his face that he was someone who should be believed. and he paused for a moment before he answered the question and he looked. and there was a trust in him that i had. he said, you know, yes this is the truth. this is michael's son. >> all right. so if it's true, why didn't it come out before? why haven't we heard anybody from the family say anything about this before? >> you know, that's a good question. i think ultimately if there is a dna test, that will be the judge and jury on this right? but you're talking about a family that's been at the pinnacle of the public eye for over 20 years.

joe jackson has been their manager and their father in everything for 40 years. the amount of attention this boy would have received if he ever admitted this beforehand. there is a reason you live in os low, norway. it's to not be -- >> he is still denying it, by the way. >> he is still denying it. in fact, it's not implausible that he would. i mean for him to jump into this fray now add midst all of the drama and children and wills will be a hugely courageous move for him to make. i think the family is about privacy. joe jackson is a very, very guarded individual. we know the whole family has been and it does not surprise me that something that happened many, many years ago is now only coming alive. >> james, i just wanted to get your take on it. because as i said, you do know the family. what do you think about this? >> he is doing a great job in journalism. i think he's clearly telling the truth. i think the reason it was kept

so low profile, we knew about his music circles. but i think due to the public image of michael jackson and what they were trying to project as a family of record labels and international global star, you couldn't -- >> why not? there is a lot of other stuff out there. that was really going to hurt his reputation? >> i think the thought was damage control. i think the thought was we're trying to promote you as this -- in this beginning, wholesome, clean cut, all american guy. and you have a kid -- i believe he said norwegian. so clearly there was -- i hate to say it, a cover-up. i think joe jackson when he looked in smokey's eyes, he clearly said, yeah, he's my grandson. he talks like a jackson, walks like a jackson. i see no reason for him to lie. but the thing i do see is someone needs to tell him to shut up now. >> i think that has to come out of this. >> i do think we also have to end on this very clear fact which is the young man is

breaking news in the michael jackson case tonight. search warrants served on his doctor in las vegas shows that investigators are looking for evidence to support a manslaughter charge. and they referred to jackson as, "an addict." meanwhile, the coroner has delayed the autopsy report. as we told you earlier, there is now a deal in place also for the custody of the jackson children. >> custody agreement has been reached between jackson's mother and the mother of his children,

debbie rowe. >> under this new custody deal, michael jackson's kids will live with their grandmother and debbie rowe will get visitation but she won't ask for custody. >> for more on that agreement that's been reached on the customer dif michael jackson's children and money apparently not -- repeat, not an issue. >> and joining me now with the very latest from los angeles, randy kay. we also have jim ray, correspondent for "inside edition" and james walker joining us as well. randy, let me start with you. i know you have brand new information to share about the searches carried out at conrad murray's offices. what can you tell us? >> campbell, as you know, the searches were carried out earlier this week. one at his home in las vegas. the other at his clinic in las vegas. and the search warrants were filed today. i can tell that you according to the search warrant, detectives were looking for evidence "demonstrating crimes of excessive prescribing and prescribing to an addict" plus, "evidence of manslaughter."

the addict, they seem to be referring to in this case is michael jackson. something else that is key here, that it shows that according to the search warrant, they are looking for records related to the order, delivery and storage of propofol. the powerful sedative that authorities believe killed michael jackson. what they take? they took hard drive images. they took one hard drive. paperwork records from two cell phones and the doctor's iphone. they were looking for medical history, billing records, nursing records, anything to help them relate michael jackson and his 19 aliases which are listed in this search warrant, to the doctors and the drugs that may have helped contribute to his death. >> and randy, also we had been hearing that they were investigating a number of doctors. but you have a source telling that you they really are focusing on conrad murray, right? >> right. we have one federal law enforcement official telling us, "dr. murray is the only one they're looking at." we know that other doctors and

records have been subpoenaed. but clearly he seems to be the focus of this investigation. we know from a source telling cnn that he gave michael jackson that prpofil within 24 hours of his death. that is the drug that authorities believe killed michael jackson. that's writ stands right now. we will tell you that we spoke with his lawyers office and they are telling us still that he is a witness and has not been named a suspect. >> and, jim, you actually think that dr. murray's attorney is expecting an arrest. what makes you that i? >> well, because dr. murray's attorney said he does not expect an imminent arrest due to the fact that the autopsy reports been delayed. the use of the word imminent implies that an arrest is coming. and when the federal agent says or the federal investigators say that dr. murray is the only person they're looking at, i suspect they're talking about with respect to the manslaughter investigation. i don't think it means that other doctors are off the hook. when randy talks about excessive

prescribing and prescribing to an addict, those are both felonies here in california. as we saw in the anna nicole case, there could be separate drug charges even if there's no homicide or manslaughter charges. so, again, you could be talking about two separate tracks here. >> right. a goint. there randy, back to the other big news of the day, this custody deal, obviously. reached between catherine jackson and debbie rowe. walk us through the terms and what we know. >> well, we know that michael jackson named his mother katherine jackson as the guardian of his three children. there was some question whether or not debbie rowe, his ex-wife, would try to seek full custody of the two children she delivered with michael jackson. those are the two oldest children. now we're getting word today that there is an agreement on the table between both parties. katherine jackson will retain custody of the three children. they will all remain together. and debbie rowe will have visitation rights. the timing and frequency is still to be determined. they plan to meet a child

psychologist. but again campbell, as you mentioned, no money was exchanged. at least that's what we're being told. we know that debbie row hechlt a divorce agreement with michael jackson of $8.5 million. i'm told that is all the money that she will be receiving from the estate. that will is no extra money involved as part of this custody deal. >> jams, what do you think? >> i think they had to resolve it with debbie rowe because these kids essentially are going continue to hart $800 million. you look at the $2 billion estate and 40% from the trust and 40% to the kids and 40% from katherine. they didn't say she would never receive money. we're going to work on joint custody and have visitation. you have to wonder if they told debbie rowe, if you do x for the next x number of years, however much time, then you will see some benefit from this situation financially. so you wonder today if this was just a public pr move as we prepare for monday's hearing. that is the big fight.

there are new developments in the case of erin andrews this is that reporter for espn. for the last several weeks she has been dealing with the aftermath of a peeping tom who used a hidden camera to secretly video andrews in her hotel room nude. the tape was posted online and now ate pears that andrews is targeted at her home by paparazzi. listen to the 911 call she made.

>> for more on this, we have kelly banks, host of floodtv.com and also a former colleague of erin andrews who also out in los angeles cnn legal analyst lisa bloom joining us as well. and kelly, let me just ask you first. i know you used to work with erin. obviously this can't be easy. how is she doing? >> i, you know, erin has not spoken to the media. i can only imagine she feels like a prisoner in her own home.

the media who put her on this pedestal and loved her and adored her has now locked her in her house. she has to be frustrated because she can't talk and mortified, terrified. she doesn't know who filmed her. she won't know if it's someone she knows. she can't look anyone in the eye until they figure out who did this to her. >> lisa, you know, first you secretly taped in her hotel and now she has this whole paparazzi outside her door. but go back to the bottom line on this. what happened at the hotel, it is actually illegal if, i understood what you had said earlier, for people to watch this tape of her, any tape taken without the person knowing about it, is that right? will you explain that to us? >> to buy -- it's illegal to buy something that you know is stolen. if you're buying -- if you're downloading something and paying for it, yes, that's the same thing as buying a stolen car. i'm not saying it's illegal simply to watch something if it

flashes across your television screen. but like, erin andrews is a victim here of some sick peeping tom who probably drilled a hole through a hotel room. why is she a prisoner in her own home? why, for example, does she not have some private security hired by her network and another part of that case? she indicates she does have private security. i don't know who is paying for it. but they're not with her at the time. it hasn't gone viral. of course they're tl are going to be paparazzi looking for her. why is she alone in her home. left to call a stranger on 911? that 1 outrageous. >> this isn't only happening to celebrities, either. it's real people, every day people can be victims of this. you look at these internet stalking situations. they're posting stuff and they take of women in public bathrooms, et cetera. are the laws on this lisa, keeping up with what is actually happening out there? >> i don't think that they are.

point of the year today. chief business correspondent sshgts market coming back for good. what's going on? >> i'm back. this time i told you this i warned you. one day i will be back here with good news. and, in fact, i am. things are getting better. let me tell you a little before i tell you about what is going on, let me tell but garden variety bear market. bear markets are when markets go 20% or more from their top. now if you look at the last ten bear markets, the average drop is 35%. it's been over 14 months. that's the average of the last 10 bear markets. take a look at this bear market that we're in right now. we hit our peak in october 2007. 17 months and we're down 57%. some people would say that means, boy, things are really bad. some others will say this market has dropped so hard over so long that when it comes back it's going to be strong and we're starting to see. that let's take a look at where we are now. we have had a market that --

let's go back all the way to november 5th, that's the day after president obama was elected president of the united states. there was a drop, by the way, that day. the market was at 9,139. some 2,000 points lower than it was even two months earlier when lehman brothers failed. take a look at this market. it's been jagged. it went all the way down to 6,547. this is the dow i'm talking about. this is march 9th. that's a day that will go down in hist rich. a 40% drop of the top of the nashgt october 2007. now look what happened since march 9 of 2009. it has gone up. it hasn't been entirely steady but it's gone up. we are now 40% higher than we were on march 9th. we're up to 9,954. what are we doing with our money? that's the question. campbell, i'm hearing it all over the place. >> ali, what should people be doing? what should people be doing with their money right now? >> we can't prognosticate.

but if you think -- if you think the market is going up more than it's already gone, the 40% that it's already gone, remember, over the last ten bear markets, the following five years have resulted in almost a 200% gain. so if you think it's going up further, if you're a believer in the market, then you need to reinvest or invest your money now. if you don't know for sure where things are going, then you should do what most americans should do, you should dollar cost average which means every week or two weeks or every pay period put in a fixed amount of money, $100, $200, don't worry about where the market is. and if you're one of those people who doubts this and there are people around who say this is false this rally is false, it's going to go down again. then what you do you is invest in something called market neutral funds or bear market funds. they're actually funds you can invest in which bet against the market. but the bottom line is, this is an active dynamic market and economy. you need to be involved. >>
