can eat, sleep, go to the bathroom. you stay up for days and days and days at a time without sleep. our record was five and a half days. >> larry: he was a great guy. >> yeah, he was. >> larry: andy, what makes a good fisherman? >> well, i don't know. some say you're born with it. it's just your instincts where you think like a crab almost. seems like phil said, either you're behind -- you're in front of it, in between it or you're doing crabbing. it just gets in your instincts and read the way the crab are moving. there's only 70 of us in the world. >> larry: only 70? keith, do you ever have a feeling like you're killing something that's living? >> no. i mean, the fisherys in alaska are some of the most regulated and well-managed fisherys on the planet. there's well stocked right now. we take a minute portion of the biomass off the ground. at the end of the day, we don't kill them, we just give them to the processors, they kill them.
9:45 pm
>> larry: it's doing well? >> everybody wants a sustainable fishery. i want a fishery for the next generation and thereafter. keith's right, i mean, politically, the fishermen join in. wer with the feds. it's all regulated. we used to take 45% of the mills off the ground now we're taking only 15% of the males off the ground. we're so conservative, it's -- >> 15% of the four-inch males off the ground. >> larry: how do you know the male from the female? >> the female snow crab is about that big. the male snow crab gets to be about this big. the shell itself. >> he started looking. >> larry: an interesting development this season, it involves a personnel switch on two of the boats. back with that drama after this.

9:49 pm
>> i would say we're around the top of the list. the strange thing is, i don't think anybody realized it before they started filming. all the statistics came out. the next thing you know, you've got everybody freaked out. >> larry: now you're scared? >> honestly, yes, the older i get, the more afraid i am. >> we can't lie to our wives about what we're doing. >> larry: toyou told me before e break that you get sea sick. why do you do this? >> to pay the bills. i didn't get sick when i was a younger kid. if i go out and haven't been out on the ocean for two months. if i go out 30, 40-foot seas, a few days out, i throw up lunch out the window, and i'm good to go. >> larry: andy, did you ever come close to, do you think, from buying it? >> yeah. we were throwing some lines out and a line went around my hand and pulled on it, and i threw my glove off like that.
9:50 pm
there's been a couple times like that, i got a line wrapped around my waist and about killed me. jon saved me, cut me out. >> larry: have you ever scared, in dangerous waters? >> boy, even just last year, i captured a pretty immense wave that just about took out my crew. and, you know, i can honestly say, during the moment, i was never scared. i mean, just everything becomes really clear. you're really focused and you just get through it. after you're out of the situation, whether it's big water or big, whatever, then you have a chance to kind of reflect on it. at that point you get a little shaky. but not during the moment. >> larry: do many people who want to be >> larry: do many people owho want to be fishermen not make it. >> absolutely. a lot of guys hear about it and it is an ego thing. you don't got be big to go fishing. you have to have a big heart and want it bad enough. a lot of times they hear about the money.
9:51 pm
that is an incentive. they don't see the other side of the coin. we can go a week or months and not make a dime. >> larry: you come back empty? >> i have come back where we had to pay the boat money, fuel, bait, airplane tickets. >> larry: you are renting the boat? >> i own the boat, but as a crew member, you have to pay the boat. it is not all peaches and creams. >> larry: jonathan, have you ever thought of quitting? >> yeah. this is my 30th season. we were taking saltwater in our fuel, laying on our side, too deep to dump our gear. i came in to offload and saw an airplane coming in and i said i'm getting on that plane. i left my brother -- >> in the ice. >> for two trips. >> larry: you came back? >> yeah. phil harris came two hours after
9:52 pm
me to town and i had to say goodbye to phil. >> larry: simple question, why do you like it? >> it is everything about you, mother nature tests you, it is the ultimate man versus nature. unbelievable. >> larry: when you see -- when they forecast bad weather, do you ever not go out? >> if you are in town, you have the option of not going out. we work so far offshore, when you are 200 miles out there is no running and hiding. you have to batten down the hatches and deal with it. >> larry: how long does it take to get out there. >> it depends where you fish. sometimes you are a few hundred miles from the russian harbor. >> larry: take a long way to get out? >> yeah. maybe two days if you are going to go out that far. it is a ways. >> larry: i would think, jonathan, i saw the fight, you would have to get along because you could throw a guy overboard.
9:53 pm
>> you have a fight in town, but everybody saves each other on the water. >> larry: did you ever want to throw anyone overboard? >> quite a few. >> larry: do you eat crabs, keith? >> absolutely. i have a freezer full of the stuff. people ask do you get sick of it. it is not like we are eating crab every night. >> larry: all of you do? >> any shell fish, man, i like it. >> larry: do you guys like stone crabs? >> yeah. >> larry: they have seasons in florida, stone crab season. >> king crab is still the best. >> larry: how many can you bring in in a haul, on a great day? >> it depends on the size of the boat. keith's boat is bigger than mine. a hundred average, you pull a hundred pots, you can pull in 70,000 pounds. that is $500,000 in one day. >> larry: how long will you be out for? how many pounds can you bring
9:54 pm
back? >> i did 100,000 pounds in 80 hours. >> his boat will hold 400,000. our boat holds 13000,000. his boat holds, what, 170,000? >> larry: you can make a lot of money in two days? >> you can't fill the boat in two days. we'll give it a shot. there were years not long ago when crab stocks were down, where we literally made all our money in 14 fishing days one year. the entire year based on 14 days of fishing. >> all these guys complaining about the economy, they are lucky to have a job. when you are a fisherman, you don't know what is going to happen from one year to the next. >> larry: when we come back, zig and phil switch deck hands. t in. the is line. at your lexus dealer.

we will talk tea party. let's take a look at the two jakes. >> listening to you, josh, you are not his boss for everything. >> i didn't say -- i never told him i was his boss. >> yeah, you did. >> yeah, you did and you know it. he is trying to get another boat on because he is afraid he is going kill you. here's the deal. i need for you to go on the conelia. >> i had a little meeting with siz. we decided to put you on the northwestern and me take jake anderson. >> larry: what was that about, siz? >> i think the kids need to -- we need to take them down a notch. plain and simple. >> larry: and you did? >> well, yeah. the grass isn't always greener. it is a good lesson to learn. >> don't you love the way phil tells it like it is. tells his kid. >> larry: do you see whales.
9:59 pm
>> yeah. >> larry: what do you think about whales in captivity, do you have an opinion on that? >> killer whales, we talked to trainers in san diego and they said they never swim with them. >> last year a killer whale jumped up behind us. >> larry: thanks, guys. congratulations, best ratings every. that is the show "deadliest catch" tuesday on discovery. we close on a sad note for the larry king live, family. miriam walker died on easter sunday. she was 94. miriam walker left a remarkable legacy, four daughters, ten grandchildren, including my goddaughter and her brother and two great grandchildren. miriam walker enjoyed a fulfilling, distinguished life. she was sharp and independent minded and right to the end she
