hello there, everybody. this is your cnn saturday morning for the 2nd day of october. i'm t.j. homes. we start, those with that deadly flooding that's hit much of the east coast. north carolina pretty much getting the worst of it. one town just about all it is under water. got that four and reynolds wolf standing by for us as well with the forecast. also some new questions this morning about that tragic case of cyber bullying. a rutgers university student commits suicide after his sexual encounter is posted online. but the question some are asking now did the university ignore some red flags? live report on that just minutes away. also a home improvement product that could actually not improve the home coburn the house down. the massive recall ordered for do it yourself books that give out dangerous advice. those details you need to see.

those are coming up. but let's go to this desperate situation. tens of thousands of people all up and down the east coast dealing with this now. flooding from north carolina to new england killed at least eight people, homes, businesses under water. roads are closed. some people have to get out of their homes. high water starting to recede in some areas. that's great. warnings and watches are still in place. flooding triggered by remnants of a tropical storm. that tropical storm nicole and another weather system that interacted with that region. we bring in reynolds wolf who can give you a better explanation. those two systems came together and just sat over north carolina. >> it was a deadly combination of both of those that brought this on. just incredible amounts of rainfall. right now if you look at radar a few tell tale showers off the coast. very heavy. in many spots along parts of north carolina but into new york. absolutely brutal the heavy rainfall. some places in north carolina

came very close to getting up to two feet of rain. much of that has gone which is great news. still the ground absolutely saturated. clean up will begin today as those waters quickly recede. what we can anticipate is for shower activity forming back to the west and south of the great lakes. this area of low pressure and trailing cold front will pull eastward and as they do it will bring rain to parts of cincinnati back to columbus, ohio, cleveland before the day is out. as that front gets very close to the carolinas you might see more cloud cover, maybe a stray shower but not of the magnitude we've had. back out to the west coast mix of suns, clouds, few spots san francisco maybe san jose, you could see a few stray showers. just east of say san diego but for the most part a fairly nice day out there. temperatures across the nation, for the big bowl game today in

dallas, the game between the longhorns and oklahoma sooners 84 degrees expected by kickoff. 57 in chicago. 66 in st. louis and atlanta with 78 degrees. as we wrap things up, this tropical system that brought the rough weather to parts of the carolinas the heavy rainfall is moving out to sea. however we're keeping an eye on two other areas of concern. one here in the center of the atlantic, east of the leeward islands. western caribbean, watching a few stray showers there that there's no reason for major concern but some things keeping a very sharp eye on. the season goes all the way through november 30th. you have to watch tropics especially this time the year. t.j.? >> we appreciate you as always, buddy. talk about the big major flooding we had here in the u.s. look at this in mexico. they still have major flooding situations. disaster declaration now cover about three dozen cities and towns. red cross say up to 100,000 people are affected here.

high weather triggered by weather systems that pounded the country late last month. this morning we're getting word of another audio message that is once again purportedly from al qaeda leader osama bin laden. this would be the second message we've gotten in two days and in this one he's urging muslims to do more to help flood victims in pakistan. cnn has not been able to verify the authenticity of that voice. in pack stone drone attacks have killed 18 people most of them suspected militants. target area is a tribal region near afghanistan. we have more from islamabad. >> reporter: this latest series of drone strikes has left at least a dozen militants dead all of them occurred north of waziristan, which is a stronghold of the taliban and al qaeda. this comes after a month of increased drone strikes by the u.s., way more than we've seen in almost any month in the past. some of these strikes causing a

lot of controversy as well, especially helicopter incursions that have happened by u.s. military helicopters into pakistani territory, one of those incurrings caused the death of three pakistani border soldiers and since then pakistan shut down the main supply route for nato goods headed through pakistan into afghanistan. that route remains shut down and only yesterday one of these convoys was attacked by militant, set on fire of 27 trucks in that convoy, 25 burned out. what's happened since then is that a lot of these convoys which were stationary at the side of the road in many places have been moved into depots to get them away from the road and help improve security. a deadly rail collision in central indonesia to tell you about. the transportation ministry says 34 people were killed when one train rammed into another. at least 36 people were hurt as well.

both trains were headed for jakarta. rutgers university planning a moment of silence before today's football game to honor tyler clementi, the 18-year-old student jumped off a bridge after a video of a sexual encounter with another male was online. stephanie elam has the latest. good morning to you. what do we know now? we're trying to figure out timelines of how this all went down and try to piece together exactly what happened. >> reporter: it's so tragic, t.j., to think about at 18 feeling like there's no other way out other than to just take your own life. what exactly did tyler feel, what dethink? that's the mystery here. we found some posts on the internet that appear to be from tyler. we don't know for sure they are from him. the person post is upseptember

his roommate taped him. he said he contacted his r.a. and two university officials above him, we've asked the university about this and they said they can't comment on it because of federal privacy laws that protect college students. we don't know exactly what transpired. we asked the university if they could characterize how they handled the situation and did they handle it well. here's what the university spokesperson told us. i have spoken to virtually every principle involved in this matter and they have attempted to handle this matter to the best of their ability. that leaves us with a lot of questions. university president says he plans to reach out to the leaders of the community to see if twlas that they can work together so that students don't feel like they are isolated in situations like this. >> a lot of questions we all have but i assume, i guess one of the questions that the investigators, everybody is looking into this, we all have questions. >> reporter: oh, yeah everyone is asking so many things. they are in the mid.

an investigation now. they are not telling us exactly what they are or are not finding. they do say they are considering bias charges against the two students they charged in the case but haven't made a determination on that yet. you got two 18-year-olds. these two students actually knew each other from high school and just randomly ended up living on the same floor in college is what we're understanding. these two who are dealing with this now. >> we're hearing anything else now from tyler's family? >> reporter: we've gotten a couple of statements out from them. there was another one that came out yesterday. obviously, they are still very much in the grieving process and haven't spoken to the media. but they have put out messages through their lawyer. here's one we saw yesterday. quote, we understand our family's personal tragedies present important legal issues for the country as well as for us. regardless of our legal outcomes our hope is that our family's personal tragedy will serve as call for compassion, empathy and

but, paul, it appears nobody wants to be there with you. i'm not talking about the empty room, i'm talking about congress high tailing it out of there and the president's chief of staff is gets out of there too. i'm not going to take it personally. lawmakers are gone through election day. and, yeah, big news yesterday at the white house. the president announcing that rahm emanuel, his chief of staff since he took office back early last year. he's leaving. where is he going? heading back to chicago. he'll be doing a listening tour. the idea is we think he'll announce for mayor there. of course the long time mayor, mayor daly announcing earlier this fall he would not run for re-election. november 22nd he has to get those signatures out to get on the ballot and then of course next february is the democratic primary. it will be a crowded field. who takes over for rahm emanuel? deputy chief of staff pete rouse. he knows barack obama very well.

t.j.? >> we're just about a month away now from the mid-terms. everyone predicting republicans would take back the house. a little tighter in the senate. a lot of people including the president been blaming republicans for putting the country in the mess he says we're in now. but americans who do they think can actually fix the mess now? >> i got some answer. you got the questions i got tans. seriously the economy the number one issue has been for a long time. brand new poll. we asked who do you blame for getting us in this economic mess. who is more responsible. you can see more people 41% say republicans in congress more responsible, 35% democrats. but check the next board out. that's who got us into it. which party will do a better job getting us out of that. increasing or fixing the economic problems. even though more people people

take a look at the stories that are making headlines. president obama duelling apologize to his counter part in guatemala after recent leadership unearthed evidence suggests the united states carried out illicit disease studies on guatemalans. to indonesia where 34 people are dead 36 hurt after two trains collided early today. one train was stationary as the second slammed it from behind. both trains were bound to the indonesia capital of jakarta.

cause the crash is being looked at now. new jersey now with the president of rutgers university says he'll reach out to the school's gay community as it deals with the high-profile suicide. freshman tyler clementi jumped off a bridge after his sexual encounter with a man who was secretly video-taped and posted online by clementi's roommate. they plan a moment of silence prior to today's football game. a series of supersides by teenage boys after being taunted or bullied that has a lot of parents concerned. how can you protect your child or even find out if your child might be bullied. josh is here with some resources, important information because sometimes kids are afraid to come forward. they don't want to say i'm being picked on. >> a lot of parents don't realize their kids are bullying other kids. i'll show you some resources online that can help you find out if your child might be bullied, look for some accuse out there.

celebrities are creating messages and posting them online. swinl len one is ellen degeneres. several have committed suicide in the past month. here's a piece of what ellen said. >> these kids needed us. we have an obligation to change this. there are messages every where that validate this bullying and taunting and we have to make it stop. we can't let intolerance and ignorance take another kids' life. i want anyone out there who feels different and alone to know i know how you feel. and there is help out there. you can find support in your community. if you need somebody to talk to or get involved there's some great organizations listed on our website. things will get easier, people's minds will change and you should -- you should be alive to

the floodwaters starting to recede. the situation is still pretty dire. north carolina to new england flooding has killed eight people, homes, businesses under water. roads are closed. you see from the pictures here people had to be rescued from their homes by boat. those are streets. only way to get down them is by boat. this was all triggered by remnants of a tropical storm, nicole. remember her? triggered by another weather system. those two things got together and just dumped water on top of north carolina and other parts of the east coast. reynolds wolf keeping an eye on this thing for us today. it may have stopped raining but, man, there's going some recovery that you talk about days, weeks, maybe even months down the road. >> you have to think about the ground is saturated, so much stuff, the clean up begins. a lot of houses and furniture

that has to be thrown out. all the stuff that can't be replaced. there are eight people that are no longer with us. the families will be suffering for a lifetime. sad times there. what we have today will be a little bit better in terms of the weather. that is some good news. if you take a look at some of the rainfall totals, almost two feet of rainfall in wilmington, north carolina. just staggering stuff. most of the rainfall centered in parts of the northeast and great lakes. ohio valley scattered showers, all this is going to be lifting up towards northeast. trail end of that front may move through the carolinas. more cloud cover a rain drop or two but nothing of the same magnitude. dry across the mid-section. out west showers possible for central and southern california but not the heavy rainfall. in terms of your temperatures, a string of 60s from boston southward to new york, 71 in our nation's capital, 65 in kansas city, 95 in las vegas, 80 in los angeles. that's a quick wrap on your forecast, t.j. let's pitch it back to you.

36 minutes past thundershower. live picture here from d.c. they are just getting going for another rally. we've seen rallies and a lot of coverage of some rallies in washington. this is billed one nation rally kick off this afternoon. it is billed as the antidote to the tea party. those words coming to us from the naacp president who was talking about this and one of the many groups helping to organize this. it's called one nation but it's promoting better education, free economic opportunities ahead of the mid-term elections. speakers will include ben jealous, reverend al sharpton and several hundred groups helping to sponsor this event. one person who is there, a

blogger. he's been on a cross country trip blogging across america about some of the hot button political issues. i asked him why he thought it was important for in the home at the rally. >> i'm part of 400 groups being here. we're here to bring people together, to talk about the issues that are of concern right now in the country. i think when you look at what's been going on not just in the past eight years but the last couple of years there's a little bit of frustration, i think there's a need to move beyond divisive politics. that sort of brought all these organizations together. i see a ton of people from t naacp is one of 400 groups. their hope is people on the hill, our representatives will notice that we have concerns and we have something to say and that we want them to refocus on what's going on in the country. >> you said upset about what happened. you also mentioned what's been happening the past couple of years. is this rally meant to send a

message directly to president obama that some of you all, you maybe in particular not happy with what you've been seeing the past couple of years? >> i'm not going to say me in particular. i do think there are people that are just concerned would probably be the right word. other people are frustrated. for me it's an opportunity to say hey we still -- there's still things that need to be done. i think two years is a short amount of time. i'll give the administration a little bit of credit. i think they did a lot of great things. but i think the administration knows themselves there's still work to be done. i think this is geared more towards the hill, though, not necessarily the administration. that's my personal feeling. >> that's your personal feeling. is there a feeling as well that this rally needs to in some way compete with, at least match or maybe outdo what we saw several weeks ago when glenn beck had a huge rally there or with some of the huge tea party rallies. >> should have seen that question coming.

now the focus is getting to happy. we sit down face to face -- getting to happy. so she still revisits the p protagonist in her book, "waiting to exhale." she learns her husband is gay. she finally said, you know what? she got tired of being angry. it was exhausting being angry. so she began to reflect on her life. i just want to be happy again. i deserve to be happy. that's what precipitated getting to happy. she talks about what's similar in her life. she's got some wonderful advice for anybody and everyone who gets to a point in their life no matter what your age bracket where you suddenly start to forget who you are, what makes you tick, what makes you happy and how do you grab hold of that
