here. they know reality show, they live it, reality television every day. and you know they don't hold back. they are going to share secrets. we are dancing with the stars ourselves. some professional dancers critiquing bristol palin's performance and brandy's performance. president barack obama wrapped up his participate in the nato summit. the president said he was pleased with the progress made on several issues including afghanistan. suzanne malveaux is covering the president's trip. >> reporter: after two days of summits president obama outlined a new timetable for the afghan war when u.s. and nato troops will start to come home. the big question is whether or not this plan is realistic. it is the closest thing to an exit strategy president obama could get. >> we agreed early 2011 will

mark a transition to afghan responsibility and adopted a goal of after fan forces taking the lead in 2014. >> reporter: u.s. troops would be focused on training after fan forces. hamid karzai signed the pact expressing optimism. >> we are confident the transition will succeed to the afghan autonomy, leadership and honorship. i found today strong commitment by the international committee. >> i don't foresee isaf troops in a combat role beyond 2014. >> reporter: the agreement is at best a goal. privately there is skepticism that the afghan government will be ready to provides security and services to its people the

nato agreement says for the afghan government corruption remains a central challenge to be addressed. russia's president dmitri m medvedev said they may not be ready. president obama seemed to leave the door open about whether u.s. troops would be fighting if afghanistan after 2014. when asked if he would keep combat troops past the deadline he said -- >> i will always do what is necessary to keep d american people safe. >> reporter: president obama is eager to get u.s. forces out of this unpopular war. nato allies areless patient. >> by the end of next year we have set the goal to have 300,000 afghan soldier and police. >> reporter: several countries

have said their troops will not remain in combat indefinitely. david cameron repeated here that no matter how violent afghanistan is at the end of 20132 2014, the british will end combat operations the next year. the obama administration is under pressure to defeat the taliban and stabilize afghanistan. the president wants to reiterate that -- >> apparently having some trouble with suzanne malveaux's story. checking some of your top stories. pope benedict says in his new book he approves of the use of condoms in certain cases, to prevent the spread of hiv and aids. from a pontiff who publicly said condoms worsened the spread of aids. rescuers are scrambling

trying to figure out how to reach 29 miners trapped in a coal mine. there has been no contact with the miners who were trapped two days ago. most new zealanders, two australians, two brits and one sampb can. it doesn't look like sarah palin will get an endorsement from first lady barbara bush. here is what she said. >> what is your read about sarah palin? >> i sat next to her once. thought she was beautiful. i think she is very happy in alaska. i hope she'll stay there. >> her face says it all. former president george bush and barbara bush on larry king on cnn on monday night 9:00 eastern. it is saturday night so we

thought we would have a little fun around here and not do so much serious stuff. if you have watched tv, listened to the radio, searched the wb a little bit this week you couldn't miss this moment. >> i can now reveal the couple with the lowest combined total of judges scores and viewers votes is brandy and max. >> it is odd because it is one of those moments where everyone was gathering around wondering what is going on. bristol palin staying alive over brandy. she racks up low scores from the judges. sure. it is a tv show but many viewers are getting dead serious. the guy in wisconsin who was so angry about bristol's performance he allegedly shot at his television. maureen o'connor, hello. a reporter, she joins us.

a reporter for gawk ir.com. warren ballellentinbellentine. and karen tenabi is a reporter for politico. this goes beyond popular culture. this goes to politics because sarah palin is always in the audience. they are saying that the tea party is helping bristol palin here. >> it is. it has become political. it is the most popular show on television and people are calling it the best campaign ad on television. 20 million people are tuning into this and seeing sarah palin cheering on her daughter. it is causing a lot of uproar. some people are really mad bristol is still there. other people are trying to push the vote out. vote early, vote often and from as many e-mail addresses. encouraging people to start lots

of e-mail addresses to vote for bristol. there is some controversy. >> let's listen to bristol palin's response and her mom from eonline. >> when people say that oh it is just because of the tea party. i think of all the people out there that hate my mom. why don't we talk about that. why won't that be a topic of conversation. me being sarah palin's daughter they can hate me or love me. i don't care who is voting for us. thank you for voting for us. >> every time during the election anyone criticized sarah palin she would come back just rallying against her haters. a facebook post saying these people are criticizing me, let's show them that is what bristol does. on her facebook on wednesday she said the haters are out to destroy me because of that people rally around her more.

every person on this show is a star. they have fan bases that will vote a million times if they can. the tea party is an organization that came together specifically to vote for people, to have a message and relay a message. thus, if they are good at getting out a vote for a candidate they are good at getting out a vote for a reality star. they could argue they are more successful with bristol. >> there is a strong popular movement behind sarah palin at the moment and she's receiving a lot of support from the tea party. it's entirely possible some of those people are behind bristol for political reasons. warren? >> they are behind her for political reasons. it is almost comical. it is "dancing with the stars." bristol palin is not an actor or star. she is the daughter of sarah palin. if you don't believe this is political, why is sarah palin there every show.

did you see the other dancers' face? the professional dancers face they had their mouths wide open. i could take one of the atlanta housewives and beat bristol palin. she can't dance. >> we're going to ask the atlanta housewives. it is about talent or is it a popularity contest? i know brandy went on an urban radio blitz, urban, which means black, radio show to drum up support. brandy is drumming up african-american support what is the difference between bristol palin -- >> it is no difference, don. we have to look at the demographics. urban america is not watching "dancing with the stars" the way the tea party and and we have to prove them wrong like the tea party when it comes to bristol pal

time now for the news on cnn. a look at some of your top stories. a manhunt is underway for a gunman who shot a park ranger in utah. the ranger was shot three times and is now in critical

condition. he was gunned down friday night after confronting the suspect in a parking lot outside of a park trail. nato will stay in afghanistan long term beyond 2014. president barack obama who is attending the nato summit in lisbon, portugal says the ha handover will begin next july. nato has a security force of about 40,000 troops from 48 countries. president barack obama says he understands a growing protest against full body scans and patdowns at airports but the enhanced security measures are necessary for your safety. the president says tsa has been under intense pressure to tighten pressure after the underwear bombing on christmas day last year. he says these measures are most effective. for the first time in 40

years they played football inside the ivy covered walls at chicago's wrigley field. wrigley, of course, is home for the chicago cubs. i think it is a beautiful stadium. it needs repair, but it looks great. it has not hosted a game since 1971. northwestern and illinois played there. one end zone was flush against a wall that prompted officials to run all offensive plays toward the other end zone. by the way illinois won 48-27. man, we covered this story extensively. remember the drama, the 233 chilean miners? they are living it up right now hollywood style. the invincible group got celebrity treatment touring l.a. this weekend. the miners and their rescuers are in town to attend the cnn heroes tribute as special

guests. the resilient spirit and spirit of cnn heroes. gary tuchman who covered their harrowing rescue joins us from l.a. gary, i understand you have been watching. were you dancing with the dancers here? >> reporter: i was dancing in the studio in los angeles, don. i hope you invite me back in atlanta. that is a perfect place for dances. >> you have been traveling with these guys when they got off the plane. do people treat them like stars? >> reporter: with all due respect to your previous guest, the ultimate dramatic reality show was last month when the miners came out of the mine. they are huge celebrities. they have been touring southern california. we went on a double decker bus to tour hollywood. they started singing and dancing

on the bus. we were outside grauman's chinese theater. we were five minutes away from cher. all the paparazzi was there for cher but looked up on the bus and said those look like the chill kbliners. they didn't know what to do, point toward cher, point toward the miners. >> i know you are a serious news guy but in hollywood it is the paps. not the paparazzi. >> reporter: oh. i have to get the lingo right. the pats. >> paps. >> we left hollywood, this is important, and went to universal studios. we went on this ride. this is more serious. amazing 3-d realistic thing where dinosaurs and king kong come to your tram. it was dark and the car started shaking back and forth. i wanted to see what the

reaction was. a couple of them said here we go again. they were joking. i asked did you have flashbacks? they said, no. we had a great time. >> if more it was the first time outside of chile. it would have been interesting to witness their reaction seeing america. >> for most of the miners, they all brought family members with them. their second time on an airplane. they had to fly from near where the mine was to santiago. for many this was their second plane ride, flew nine hours to atlanta, connected in atlanta and flew to los angeles. they are having a time of their life. they are absolutely great people. >> give them our his and hellos. gary, are you a dancer? are you a good dancer? >> reporter: no.

superheroes. >> we are seeing kids who are anxious, predepressed and cheat their way through high school and they're arriving at college unprepared to do the work at the college level. >> what's interesting to me about the film is hearing some of the suggested ways in which schools can be improved. some having to do with less or no homework on certain days. >> let's see what the research says around home work and do what's right developmentally. we need to move away from a one size fits all approach. for me the solution is bringing communities together to have a dialogue. >> reporter: since the film was released in september, there's been discussions. >> it takes time and commitment to do those, but i can't think
