5:00 am
good morning. it is friday, august 5. this is your "a.m. wakeup call." i'm ali velshi joining you live from new york. tgif -- a new day. tg -- it's not thursday. yesterday the dow posted the steepest one-day drop since the financial crisis three years ago, 503 points. it left a thud all ending the week in the day for losses. european futures opening lower.
5:01 am
investors turn shares, gold, commoditie commodities, oil, everything into cash. all of the selling erased the whole year's market gains for all three major indices in the united states, snowballed up to the closing bell. this is a recap of thursday in 30 seconds starting with the opening bell. a little clock in the upper right of your screen so you can follow the time line. take a look. >> watching stocks drop right now. the dow down 72. >> a breath-taking plunge on wall street. >> watching the fall of the u.s. markets. >> from big banks to happen apple to google, every single one is lower. >> people are taking their money out of the stock market, out of gold, out of oil. >> 370 points, plunging here as we are an hour away from the closing bell. >> all of the dow 30 blue chip stocks are down today.
5:02 am
>> this is me, ali velshi, cnn's business correspondent talking to you now. a lot of the problem yesterday, italy's debt, the european central bank buying up bonds to prop up the euro and some other activity in japan to prop up the yen. today the u.s. could own the so-called x factor that could influence the markets. the monthly jobs roar from the labor market. the highly ap 'tis pated jobs report will be released at 8:30 a.m. eastern time. these are the jobs added and lost over the last 12 months. these have improved nicely as you can see for a while. look what happened in may. it fell off of a cliff. in 3 1/2 hours, we expect to learn that the u.s. economy added 70,000 and 80,000 last july. net new jobs minus jobs lost. if that's true, it's bad news. if fewer jobs were added, that's really bad news. the unemployment rate is 9.2%.
5:03 am
all of it raised the dipper. "the new york times" thinks it could be happening. it feels a topic on "ac 360" last night. this was said about it. >> let me be clear, right now we need to focus on making sure we don't have a double dip recession. >> we're frail and i think there's a real danger of a double dip recession. >> before we move on, let's put what happened on thursday in perspective. not going to break out in a rendition of "don't worry be happy," but listen, it's the ninth biggest point loss on thursday. but percentage drops, it was the 116th worse, that's not very historic, is it?
5:04 am
more history -- steep vallese and peaks but followed by sure and steady recoveries. let's give ben stein the last word. >> it's a points drop, not a percentage drop. we had a fantastic recovery for the lows. may be having a double-dip recession. so far things are not that terrible. >> the nasdaq, dow, and s&p were down yesterday. these are the stock futures for today. the nasdaq is down. the dow is down. this stuff changes a lot. we'll keep you posted on it. global markets for you all night for a clue as to what's going to hatch when markets open. live team coverage, knee know dos santos is in london. andrew stevens is in hong kong. the markets closed lower, they
5:05 am
open lower. may have had momentum in the day. tell us what you know. >> if you look at where the market closed, the momentum was working against the asian markets. there was a link to the u.s. economy. asia is the exporting capital of the world, taiwan, china, all of these markets taking a hit. hong kong on the back of -- let's see what happens in china takes those hits. so you do have the fundamental issue, this linkage with the u.s. so, we're seeing a selloff across the board. australia is interesting because it's where they're going. that's a big fault because it's a commodity index. everybody is saying the commodity prices will awaken because of the weak global economy and you can't discount what's going on in europe
5:06 am
either. it finds itself paying the price for issues which are not of its making but certainly cannot escape. >> yesterday was unusual in that the money did not leave stocks to go into the commodities. the money was down across the board. the only place they were going into was cash or safe bonds? >> absolutely. it's cash. i was talking to chief equities strategist to hsbc here. he said really there's going to be a lot of volatility. cash is the safest call at the moment. we've seen the gold price tick up again in asian trade. it's back around the record levels. so there but a little bit more thought going into exactly how do we play this? but, still, if you want to be ultra safe here, it's cash. >> andrew, good to speak to you. thank you for the analysis. abdrew stevens in london. hong kong -- nina dos santos
5:07 am
joins us live. you were trying to make sense of it. a lot of it was triggered by the activity of the european central bank in an effort to shore up the italian situation? >> yeah, that's right. activity, but perhaps not enough activity for the likes of spab and also italy. the two-countries have been saying they're difficult in terms of financing the money on the bond markets in too big to fail, really. too big to fail is bantied about everywhere. it's the hallmark of the 2008 credit krufrmg. -- crunch. the move to cash is a hallmark of what we saw two or three years ago in the global financial markets. let's look at some of the figures today. a lot of the markets in europe started the day down in excess of 3%. so what we're saying, ali, on these markets, is what's interesting is if you look at the year-to-date losses for the
5:08 am
european markets, it shows you where this is the weakness is. it's down in excess of 10%. some of them double digit declines year to date. the italian market is down 20% so far this year. and the united states markets are only down by about 2% and the asian markets are down by about 5%. and that goes to show that europe is where the problem is and europe is where the markets are being affected the most at the moment. >> good for us to remember that and to remember how interconnected they all are anyway because we got to bear the pain of that yesterday. we'll check in through the course of the morning. knee know dos santos in london. as stocks plunged, media jabs went up. here's the punchline. >> what a -- 500 points it dropped today. it's due to the fear that the debt crisis in europe is getting worse. several european nations are trying to borrow money from china. obama said, hey, china is our
