the stock exchange up and running after a temporarily halt to trading this morning. it's the first overseas market to open since standard & poor's's knocked the u.s. credit rating down on friday. it possibly could be a tough day in asia, and worse tomorrow on wall street. >> it was strategic, and the finance minister not wanting to panic everybody, right? >> essentially, that's the case. the administrators of the exchange knew before they were going to delay that opening based on preopening trading. the exchange, the major index registered a drop of more than 6%, which was -- which was sizeable and put into place these institutional breaks on

trading. as you mentioned, israel's exchange operates on a sunday through thursday schedule, so it was among one of the first to react to the standard & poor's cut to the u.s. credit rating. the drop in the market here today, it's not a reaction to the downgrade on the credit raiding, so this drop not an entirely a surprise but indicates a growing level of worry here about u.s. and european debt problems, and it's worth noting that this market action, this market downturn takes place a day after a huge massive social protest rally, complaining to the government about higher prices and cost of living increases across the

board. today the prime minister, netanyahu, he held a special cabinet meeting where he addressed some of the issues and it's clear that israel cannot act too rationally in trying to satisfy some of the demand for protesters for more social spending. >> all right. thank you so much. what will happen on monday when markets re-open? will what happened in tel aviv start a domino affect in the entire gulf? >> one has to remember that this downgrade is only from one rating agency of three, and also the aa plus rating is still a good rating, and other investors

should still feel safe and secure about. if you look at the gulf, yesterday, sawudi arabia was th only market open on that day and fell by 5%, and today it stabilized and it's up. so so far at least, judging by the middle east markets, i think we can say there has been a limited fallout, but not tranlgic. >> well, not trangic, but this next story is. nato teams going over the helicopter wreckage. 30 u.s. service members died, including 22 elite navy s.e.a.l.s. the chopper crashed in an insurgent strong hold. they were on their way to reinforce other troops in a

chinook helicopter like this one. the pentagon calls it a big loss. we are joined live from kabul, and david, is there any suggestion that this interrupts the mission or what was supposed to happen once that team landed? >> reporter: it is impossible to emphasize enough the impact this has on special forces. we looked at a sizeable group of individuals that required some of the most extensive training and resources and brings the longest amount of experience to fighting some of the taliban insurgency along some of the provinces. nato troops are beginning to drawdown. ambassador crocker came into the country a few weeks ago made an indication that the u.s.

military presence in the region will most likely extend well beyond 2014, and those special forces will have to take the lead on that from the individuals we talked to, and not only in terms of training the forces who are taking control of their own country, but combating the taliban insurgents that reside in some of the border provinces and in the east where we have seen the recent attack. >> all right. clearly one sign that once the u.s. pulls out, insurgents are ready to step in. we appreciate your work there. the story as big as the war in afghanistan is also very personal. among those who died was aaron vaughn in union city, tennessee. his grandmother said aaron was not afraid as he once told her, i know where i am going if something happens to me.

ensure! it's true. you never forget your first subaru. reynolds, we will be looking at weather right now to see where it's going? >> the amazing statistic, in dallas, texas, the average low morning temperature since july 1st, has been 83 degrees, and that's high some of the places in the country get in the afternoon. but in texas that has been the morning cool temperature. and it will be warmer conditions. and in dallas, we expect a high of 105 today, very warm also. and then memphis, up to 100. kansas city, 96 degrees.

96 in kansas city. and as you look out along the west coast, you get a hodgepodge of conditions, like los angeles, 71 degrees, and up in san francisco, 68 degrees. and the expected high in seattle and portland, mainly in the 70s and 80s. but the big heat, is the southeast, and in the central plains, when you bring in the humidity it makes things more brutal. and everywhere you see the map shaded in the orange or pink color, we have watches and advisories, and the humidity will feel like 105 to 115 degrees. more of the same in parts of the carolinas and into florida and portions of southern georgia. you might get a cool-down in the ohio valley and across parts of the central plains and into the midwest, and maybe late in the afternoon. we have the humidity at the surface. we have a little bit of, i guess

you could say catalyst, which could be the daytime heating. somebody taking a flight to chicago you may have a bumpy ride, but you could have rain that could cool things off. and we have a rough component in a few places, like flash flooding, and maybe an isolated tornado. it can happen. pacific northwest, nice and dry. desert southwest and upstate new york and new england, expect scattered showers in the afternoon. you are up to speed weather-wise. the flash flood from yesterday, that flash storm that hit here, there was rivers running down the side of the road. >> pretty dramatic. >> absolutely. three athletes competing today in the test of endurance.

elizabeth cohen is in new york. you have to wonder what some of the first timers think when they dived into the hudson river. that's not something most people tend to do. >> reporter: that's right, deb. to be honest, i think they are probably scared to death wondering if they can do it, but you know what? they can and they do. the final round jumped into the river for one mile of swimz. we have a team of 10 cnn producers competing in the race, and six viewers. these are viewers who six months ago had never done anything athletic. they were couch potatoes. one of them lost 70 pounds in the last six months to make this triathlon happen, and they are biking right now and will be at the finish line when they are done. >> out of curiosity, do they have safety boats in the hudson river?

pope john paul ii. he gets a really high rating. he was beatified recently, so his rate something around 4.56 in his overall rating and that's out of six. if we look at pope john paul xvi, and a lot has to do with the abuse allegations, and did he deal with them the best he could have. the little ship are the icons, and they are white and they become grayer as the rating is downgraded. >> interesting. do you think it helps -- obviously, we're talking about the pope, but what about

churches with fewer parishioners? >> you could go to your local church and you could say is this sermon really reaching me, and is this person communicating to their audience. when you sit in a service, do you think this person is being relevant. the whole point behind the site is we rate everything, restaurants, anchors, reporters, food, the nail salon we go to, why not rate the clergy? and the reason was if they are doing great work, don't they deserve to be honored. >> well, if the ratings are not that high, it's a form of dissent within the congregation? >> it's like getting your job review. you know how a people get a job review, and they are getting called in, and it's getting other people to rate you. i thought maybe the next site

well, the first overseas market to open since standard & poor's knocked america's credit rating down a notch may be an ominous sign. asian markets open later today and wall street opens tomorrow morning at 9:30 eastern. the downgrade is unchartered territory for the u.s., not to mention the consumer. we look at the affect on your bottom line. >> let's look at what this means for you, the consumer. you can watch the interest rates on your mortgage go up, and then more homes will sit on the market, and prices of loans could fall further to the already depressed housing market, and the only silver line

something for long-term investors to see a buying opportunity here. when you look at the car loan, very similar story. expect the interest rate to go up and car prices to go up, and it will be tougher for people from middle to low credit to buy cars. and college loans, what does it mean? private student loans will see their interest rate increase, and it will be tougher for students to get a loan for the spring term, so a near term affect here. students will have to work more through college to pay off the increased interest rate, and finally the only silver lining is most students have their financing for next year already lined up. chaos on the streets of london overnight. at least 42 people were arrested after demonstrators protesting the alleged police killing of a local man began burning vehicles

and buildings. richard exchains how it all started. >> he was shot in north london on thursday, and 20 to 30 members of his family and friends marched to the police station, and they had a peaceful protest and then it escalated. and a lot of people involved in the incidents are not the family or friends and such, and we have police cars torched a iconic double-decker bus burning in the middle of the street, and a residential house on fire, and there were people trapped in there at one stage, so it's absolute chaos. >> police are calling for calm, but say they are pockets of unrest. all 26 police officers were injured in the riot. to syria now where we are

getting reports of an early-morning raid by syrian forces. explosions could be heard followed by smoke over the city. the u.n. official is demanding an immediate end to the use of force to avillains. a syrian human rights group says people have been protesting since the spring. these two were arrested while hiking iraq's kurdish region. when we get the verdict, of course, we will bring it to you right away. muslim americans are observing ramadan this month. do you know what that means?

maria, this is one of the holiest months for muslims everywhere. walk us through a typical day. >> a typical day for a muslim who is performing the fast of ramadan really begins early in the morning before the sun rises. we perform a breakfast. we eat before the sun rises. and in my family, actually, this was a fun time. my dad used to wake up and wake all of us up, and we were dreary eyed, and he prepared a lavish feast because he felt that breakfast was the most important of the day anyway. and then we have morning prayers, and then we abstain from food, drink or sex or whatever, as you mentioned. >> all of this is about sort of inner spiritual reflection, and

what is -- just tell everybody, what is the goal? what are people trying to obtain? >> the month of ramadan actually recognizes the time during which the profit, was remembered. itself discipline, and control, and sacrifice. it's like other religions in the sense that they had acts of sacrifice. there is lint, and jews also perform acts of sacrifice as well. and this is similar to other

faiths. >> we talked about the gallop report where muslims in america simply don't feel like they are being respected. what is your sense? >> well, many of the muslims that i talked to do feel respected, actually. i was surprised by that statistic, and i thought it might be greater but some of the current events and challenges that came up in muslim communities with the ground zero mosque controversy and the issues in tennessee, very close to atlanta, i think it's -- there is still a deep-seeded cu curiosity that is somewhat of a resistance, and that could be changed by more muslim americans integrating into society, and we wrote a book to showcase the muslim american women so they can showcase their lives in an

"state of the union" with candy crowley is coming up at the top of the hour, but first a check of this morning's top headlines. computer hackers say they are retaliating against the recent arrests of fellow hacktavists. the most recent data breaches happened during the computer hacker conference going on this weekend in las vegas. still, no word out of iran on a verdict on the two u.s. hikers accused of espionage. we were told that a verdict would come down within a week, but nothing yet. when we get it, of course we will pass it directly to you.
