was pinned down were u.s. army rangers, members of the arm my's 76th regiment they have been deployed in afghanistan for some time. part of this country's special operations forces that are conducting these anti-terrorism raids across eastern afghanistan. they needed help and the s.e.a.l.s came and all indications continue to be we are told that that helicopter was brought down by enemy fire, joe. >> the more i'm hearing about this, just as an outsider and lay person, the more it sounds like this was a very atypical mission. can you tell me if that's true as far as the size of the team goes, the way they were getting there, type of helicopter? was this a normal thing? >> well, it was used to the extent a quick reaction force, the teams that go in when other units need help, there's no particular way they do it. they take as many people as they
2:06 pm
feel they need, as many helicopters as they can. in this case, the original target for those rangers on the ground was known taliban leader that had been responsible the u.s. says for attacks against u.s. troops. they were going into a very dangerous volatile situation and when they needed help, you know, they called for it. it was a very significant group that went into help but that is what happens in this part of afghanistan because they want to make sure they put down any fire fight as quickly as possible. they want to go in with overwhelming force. joe? >> before i go on, do we know what happened to the rangers they were going to try to rescue? >> so far details on that part of this remain sketchy to say the least. we are told the rangers did not suffer -- we start by telling
2:07 pm
they did not suffer fatalities at this point. we don't know if they were wounded, don't know if since then there have been any further developments with rangers. we are checking on that, joe. >> a little bit more if you have it about the taliban leader who was he? is he still at large? >> well, that's the question. did they get him or not? that's also something they are not telling us at the moment, which suggests that the u.s. military will be returning to this area of eastern afghanistan to deal with what threat they perceived to be left. he is a known taliban leader in this region, somebody they wanted to deal with, responsible for attacks against u.s. troops. and sadly, any number of these guys up and down eastern afghanistan. while we out here may think this is rather extraordinary, it's what they have been doing, what the u.s. troops have been doing in afghanistan, day and night,

something we want to show you the records we had yesterday. these continue to tumble and fall. oklahoma city hit 101. tulsa had 109. down to shreveport at 106. that's a sampling here. we focused on dallas because they've had so much consecutive days above 100 degrees, oklahoma city has been near that bad. they've had 67 consecutive days above 90 degrees. and that is going to likely tie for number one. imagine that. that's over two months with temperatures like that. we're also keeping our eye on tropical depression emily. look at the satellite picture. this is getting sheered apart. lots of wind on the northeast side. we don't want you to forget about hurricane season because it's just starting to kick in. in case you missed it, noaa upgraded their forecast for the upcoming season and now they are expecting to see anywhere between 14 and 19 named storms. we've already had five of them. that means we could probably

2:15 pm
let's talk about the impacts of this news on what is a relatively small s.e.a.l. community. this clearly would send shock waves. >> yes, that's very true. it's a tight knit and small community. everyone knows each other. there's pocket -- there's a community on the east coast and community on the west coast, usually when something happens good or bad, in either one of those locations, the other side knows about it in very quick order. the impact on the operators themselves is significant but however it's not going to keep these guys from doing their jobs. we mourn death differently in this community. we like to celebrate the lives of our comrades that have gone before us. the best way we know how to do that, strap the gear back on and get going. i assure you that's what the guys are doing right now. >> are the rituals s.e.a.l.s have, is there a certain way s.e.a.l.s and, the family and
2:16 pm
communities deal with this? what do they do? >> there's a lot of rituals that take place. on a personal level between the closest friends of the operators that were lost and the community itself, when i say community, i mean the whole naval special war fair community, they have ceremonies to allow the families to grieve and awards are gifb and commemorative items are created so these menz lives are not forgotten. they are warriors, national assets and national treasures and they are commended as such in perp tuty. >> going forward now, we have war going on in afghanistan, u.s. special forces very involved. do you see this and what happened there affecting s.e.a.l.s and s.e.a.l. teams the next time they go out on a mission? >> i think if anything comes out
2:17 pm
of it, it will be slight variances and changes in operating procedures. they'll probably be new directives that come from the top that are injected into future operations plannings and scenarios and the way things are carried out. these guys do not quit. quitting is not in a s.e.a.l.'s dna. if he wasn't, he wouldn't make it through the training. it is designed to weed out the weak. they are never going to quit unless they are government tells them to cease and desift. >> i have to ask you on the morning shows this been questions as to whether this many s.e.a.l.s in a chinook helicopter in a good idea. is this a diversion for normal practice for s.e.a.l.s? do they travel together in large groups like that or smaller groups? >> it depends on what's going on. it depends on the mission. it also depends on the mission that they are supporting.
2:18 pm
as it stands, these guys were part of what's called an irf, not a qrf there's a big difference. they could be coming from many miles away, could take 20 to 30 minutes to the get there. an irf is an immediate reaction force and they were an irf, loitering on station and within seconds response time for the major or initial incident. so yes, it is not uncommon for s.e.a.l.s to be in helicopters in large groups. this just -- i'm not privy to the plarz of this situation so i would be speaking out of turn if i was to divulge any further. but it's on a whole not that uncommon to have ten to 15 s.e.a.l.s on a helicopter at any given time. >> there's a s.e.a.l. foundation. will you talk a little bit about that to me? >> the s.e.a.l. foundation is navy s.e.a.l. foundation.org.
2:19 pm
this is a very necessary support group. it funnels money right where it needs to go. it's used for bereefment and putting the children of the warriors through high school and college. the money that goes to the foundation gets right to the families. right now thags the best thing for americans to be doing. the best thing we can do is shut that website down with donations. they'll get it up and running quick fast in a hurry, believe me. but thags the best thing to do. another foundation is wounded warrior project.org. another very, very necessary and needed foundation. america, check those two websites out and donate today. donate right now. >> chris, thanks so much for coming in on a sunday. i'll check it out. >> thanks, joe, thanks for
