vacation. also a new list of seven natural wonders of the world revealed? but what do you think is missing? maybe you think something is missing from that list. welcome to you all from the cnn center in atlanta. this is "cnn saturday morning." we are glad you are right here. let's start on the campus of penn state university. look at this. this happened last night. students, thousands of them, came out for a candlelight vigil to support the victims of the sex abuse scandal. this is the same place where students rioted in support of fired football coach joe paterno just two days ago. we are hearing from joe paterno from his son which says my father is experiencing a range of powerful emotions.

he is absolutely distract over what happened to the children and their families. he also wants to very much to speak publicly and answer questions. at this stage, however, he has no choice but to be patient and defer to the legal process. he also said the family would not be talking anymore. penn state's new president said he will appoint an ethics officer that will report directly to him. rodney ericsson is replacing graham spaniard. he was fired for how he handled the scandal. and assistant football coach, mike mcqueary, is now on administrative lie ivive leave. the school says mcqueary has received multiple threats. back on campus, yes, a game, will be played and it will go on today. penn state playing nebraska at noon today. just hours from now. this is their final home game of the year.

students are being encouraged to stage what they're calling a blue out. mike galanos is there for us today. what are they try doing with this blue out? >> it dovetails with what you just showed there, the vigil. blue commemorating and acknowledging child abuse victims. that was the mood last night. i was in the midst of that vigil it was solemn as the students held those candles. i was also there when the riots began in that same spot after it was announced joe paterno had coached his last game. that was the feel, a different image and a different message from state college. let's listen to what some students had to say. >> it's so important to put the victims first. i think they've gotten lost in all of this all the media attention has been focused on sandusky, the university and our reactions, it should be focused on helping these victims and stopping it from happening

again. >> reporter: again, t.j., that was the sentiment. that's even what the interim president laid out there in his press conference yesterday. basically the world is watching. let's show penn state pride. let's act with class and dignity as this game, that's going to take place behind me, people beginning to file in to beaver stadium already here, hours before kickoff. >> on that last point is, you made there, the world is watching. everybody will have their eyes fixed on this game today it was a big game any way. you add this scandal to t people will be tuning in to see how the team reacts, how the stadium reacts. but security has been stepped up. what is the expectation of what we'll see today? >> i talked to some fans, they don't know. one person has been coming to games for years, they're like

it's going to be weird. we don't know how the team will react after such a tumultuous week. joe paterno took over when lyndon johnson was in office. that's how long he has been coaching. he is a revered, loved figure here. that's what these fans and people in state college are dealing with. >> all right. mike galanos, thank you very much. let's take a transition to politics, and what appears to be a wide-open race for the republican nomination. paul steinhauser says there is no clear cut winner. >> with just over seven weeks to go until the first vote flights mare and caucus season, there's a crowd at the top of the field. >> it's a wide-open race. >> newt gingrich has a point. look at this new national survey. the former house speaker is just four points behind mitt romney for the presidential nomination.

when you take into account the survey error, they are all virtually tied. there's a three-way battle according to another poll between cain, beginning rim and romney. >> you have competition. it might be easier for me if i didn't, but i do have competition. i will face other people who will do well. >> another takeaway from both polls, republicans have to the made up their minds. nearly one-fifth of them in each survey say they're undecided on which candidate they're backing. >> i think the american people are looking, asking questions, think bing about it. >> the polls indicate the sexual harassment allegations cain is facing and denying is hurting him as his numbers appear to be dropping. tonight all of them face off on a stage about national security

of the coolest sporting events you have ever seen. it took place on an aircraft carrier. we'll have more about that in a moment as well. major league baseball player who was kidnapped in venezuela is apparently free and doing fine. that's according to venezuelan state tv. wilson ramos was found by national security forces about 60 miles from where he was kidnapped. armed men stormed his home and took him on wednesday. the kidnappers never made ransom demands and have not been found. in just a few hours the door also open once again in philadelphia to people who want to pay last respects to legendary boxer joe frazier. 67-year-old frazier died this week from cancer. the public memorial at wells goorg arena will wrap up this afternoon. the funeral is on monday. at 6:10 now, let's say good morning to our reynolds wolf.

we're at 19 minutes past the hour. the picture there of the u "uss carl vincent," this is out in san diego. what a mission this aircraft carrier had last night. to host a college basketball game. the first time ever we have seen a college basketball game take place on the deck of an aircraft carrier. the president arrived in his homestate of hawaii a few hours ago for the apec summit. before that, this is what he saw. you are probably wondering how you convert an aircraft carrier into a basketball arena. here you go. it went off without a hitch. north carolina, michigan state in what they called the carrier classic. a lot of veterans, current serving members of the military and veterans were invited to be a part of this on veterans day.

the game was stopped -- they stopped it at sundown to play taps as they should. but that was a cool part of the evening. as brianna keeler reports, president obama had courtside seats for the whole thing. >> reporter: it was an extraordinary setting for a basketball game. the first time a college basketball game has been held on the deck of an aircraft carrier. this match-up between michigan state and north carolina. carolina, of course, winning. this is also a historic carrier. the first ship that launched attacks on al qaeda and the taliban after 9/11, but also the ship from which osama bin laden was buried at sea. the occasion, of course, veterans day. acknowledging veterans and the sacrifices they have given to their country. but also the president took the opportunity to tout his jobs plan. specifically one provision from

it, that would give tax credits to companies who hire veterans. this is a provision that passed the senate on thursday. but the real news made was in a courtside interview the president did with espn. he was asked about the controversy that has enveloped penn state. >> the whole situation is heartbreaking. we think first and foremost of the victims of these alleged crimes. but i think it's a good time for us to do soul searching. every institution, not just penn state, about what our priorities are. and making sure that we understand that our first priority is protecting our kids. you know, we all have a responsible. we can't leave it to a system. we can't leave it to somebody else. each of us has to take it upon ourselves to make sure our kids have the love and support and protection they deserve. >> there was a lot of fanfare. president obama made remarks before the game. he and the first laid by shook hands with a number of service men and women and they met the most famous michigan state alum,

call, i don't know what is. leave here tonight with a resolve and an understanding that you possess the power to change things. and i will be there with you. we should all be here with one another because, you know what? we are -- >> penn state. >> love you guys, man. students at today's game are encouraged to wear blue. calling this is a blue out in support of children who are victims of abuse a live report at the top of the hour. some other stories making headlines. arrangements are being made for jose francisco blake mora, he died in a helicopter crash south of mexico city. he was the point man in the war against drug cartels. it's not known what caused the crash. and reports of shots fired a

few blocks away from the white house. the gunfire was heard about nine hours ago. an ak-47 was recovered near an abandoned vehicle. the secret service, however, says it does not appear the white house was targeted in this incident. the battle over e-mails intensifies between the white house and the congressional committee investigating a federal loan to a company that went bankrupt. the white house releasing some, but not all of the e-mails relating to solyndra. the house panel wants to know if a solyndra financer got r preferential treatment in a loan. and now kids between the ages of 9 and 11 should get screened for high cholesterol, at least once. and again in early adulthood. the updated recommendations come from the national institutes of health and the american academy

of pediatrics. let's turn back to politics now, the race, of course, to be the republican presidential nominee. a tough week for herman cain and rick perry. cain, it's more about the sexual harassment stories. for perry, it was that embarrassing brain freeze during a debate. who is this all good for? maybe mitt romney but it seems to be helping out newt gingrich. a new poll, romney is on top, as you see there, but look, the former house speaker, newt gingrich, is not far behind. still 17% are undecided. anybody's game, but andre gillespie is helping me understand who has the upper hand here. newt gingrich, is it his debate performances or everybody else's

poor debate performances and scandal helping him out? >> it's a bit of both. tea party supporters are still supporting cain, perry and paul. but the cbs poll was also testing foreign policy readiness, and newt griingrich polls well when you look at his foreign policy expertise and general experience. >> and does he also at times look like the adult in the room? >> he sometimes does look like the adult of the room. he has made hay of attacking the media at every one of his debates that works well with his base constituency and likely republican voters. that's working well to his advantage. it probably won't work well in a general election contest, because newt gingrich has 30 years of notoriety in the united states and some of that is negative. >> comparing him to the moment that he just had, that rick

perry just had, versus newt gingrich, but how does newt gingrich stack up against mitt romney? does he excite the base a bit more? >> he does excite the base more than mitt romney does. if you look at the poll, when they looked at the top three vote getters, which would be romney, gingrich and cain, they asked who would you strongly support versus those who have weak support and those who could shift. the plurality of newt gingrich's supporters say they strongly support him. that wasn't true for cain or romney. >> don't go away. yes. we are talking newt gingrich here, but this week it seems everybody was talking cane and perry for two very different reasons. we'll get into that when this "cnn saturday morning" continues. i thought we'd be on location for 3 days, it's been 3 weeks. so, i used my citi simplicity card to pick up a few things. and i don't have to worry about a late fee. which is good...

would have moved on, but this continues a narrative for rick perry. was this just the wrong guy for this happen to? >> yeah. i feel sorry to rick perry. it's happened to me before and happened to everybody. the narrative about rick perry in the campaign is that he's not quite ready for prime time. so being able to forget the agencies that he wants to eliminate actually reinforceses this frame that he is not quite smart and up to the job. because it was one in a string of gaffs it will lead to his undoing. >> did he do the right thing about trying to make fun of it? doing interviews? going on letterman? >> absolutely. but it's probably a little too late for it. >> all right. last thing here on herman cain. the big press conference this week, we got a name and a face of one of these people accusing him of sexual harassment. he had his press conference this week. he didn't really answer a lot of questions or specifics.

we are seeing new polls now that his support among women, possibly going down now. is this scandal going to do him in? >> i'm not 100% sure that this will be the last hurrah for herman cain for a number of reasons. while his support among women is dwindling, he has support among republican men. an overwhelming number of republican voters do not think she drop out, and many think the claims are unfounded. one thing that herman cain benefits from, as we have seen newt gingrich benefit from, is this oppositional stance towards the mainstream media. as long as this is framed as a left wing conspiracy, herman cain will not be damaged enough by this to force him out of the race. in general, given his fund-raising surge at this point, he now has the money, if he invests it in the right organization in the primary states to keep on fighting. this is not quite the end of

we are about seven minutes from the top of the hour. time for our morning passport. a whole country shuts down so kids can take a college entrance exam. >> yes, about 700,000 south korean children took this test on thursday. as you said the whole country came to a standstill. people were told not to honk horns. the stock exchange even opened an hour later. >> wow. >> even certain flights were stopped so that there wouldn't be a noise for these children. there you are seeing a police escort for a child who have been late. it's interesting. when you look at south korean culture, it's rooted in the education being absolutely critical. social status is about your education and your level of education. as you said earlier, parents are absolutely obsessed. they will go to temples with

photographs of their children and pray. they'll even only serve their children certain foods. for example, you'll have something sticky, like sticky rice cakes or sticky buns so the knowledge sticks, but you won't have bananas or seaweed so the knowledge is slippery. but the pressure these children is under. yes, you can say 17-year-olds are not necessarily children. in about 2009, about 200 children committed suicide. in 2010 it was about 150. they study for so many hours that the current administration has banned classes taking place after 10:00 p.m. >> okay. that is something unimaginable in this country unfortunate to hear about the suicides and the pressure that some kids are under, but they also get results. these kids take these tests, and what's the number that go to college? >> 80% go to college, but the idea is to get into the three

main universities, seoul national, korean university and yung sky. your whole life depends on it. who you will marry. your social status, your paycheck. for many on this particular friday which was yesterday, there was great relief, but the results only come out in around november 30th. so how will they do? can you imagine the standards and the pressure to achieve these results? >> your whole life depends on one test you take at the age of 17 years old. incredible. >> a great deal of pressure and discipline on behalf of these children, but there is some concern with the administration saying let's at least stop classes after 10:00 p.m. it's costing parents an enormous amount of money. up to $2,500 a year for private tuition for these kids. so expensive and a lot of pressure. >> nadia, we'll see her again in the 8:00 hour as well.

100,000 are set to gather for the first game since the sex abuse scandal shocked the campus. also president obama arrived in hawaii just a short time ago. make no mistake, this is not a vacation. this is november 12th on the cnn saturday morning. 6:00 a.m. in fayetteville, arkansas, wherever you may be, we're glad you are here. let's start on the campus of penn state university. students came out, thousands of them last thilight for a candlelight vigil, it's the same place where students rioted in support of the fired football coach, joe paterno, two days ago. paterno is talking through his son. his son said in part my father is experiencing a range of powerful emotions. he is absolutely distraught over what happened to the children and their families. he also wants very much to speak publicly and answer questions. at this stage, however, he has no choice but to be patient and

defer to the legal process. he cooperated fully with the grand jury and he will continue to cooperate with the investigation as we move forward. he also said the family is not going to be talking anymore. penn state's new president says he will appoint an ethics officer to report directly to him. rodney ericsson is the interim president. he replaced graham spaniard who was fired this week. also assistant football coach, mike mcqueary, is now on administrative leave. he reported the alleged sexual abuse incident to paterno back in 2002. the school says mcqueary has been receiving multiple threats. back on campus, the game will go on today. it's happening just five hours from now. penn state playing nebraska in their final home game of the year. students are being encouraged to stage what they're calling a blue out. mike galanos is there for us. hello to you once again what can we expect in the stadium? they do something traditionally there at the home games, a why

points behind mitt romney. when you take into account the survey sampling error, they are all basically tied. >> you have competition. it might be easier for me if i didn't, but i do have competition. i will face other people who will do well. >> another takeaway from both polls, republicans have to the made up their minds. nearly one-fifth of them in each survey say they're undecided on which candidate they're backing. >> i think the american people are looking, asking questions, thinking about it. i think it will stay wide open until january. >> while cain is up at the top, the polls indicate that the harassment allegations he is facing and denying is hurting him as his numbers appear to be dropping. tonight all of them face off on a stage focusing on national

security and policy. they will tangle again in a week and a half at a cnn debate right here in washington. >> thanks to paul steinhauser. let's go across the country, patience seems to be wearing thin for occupy protesters in some communities. in oakland, california, the city began handing out eviction notices. police and the protesters say the shooting that happened on thursday was not related to the occupy movement but still city leader the are worried about safety at the camp. now the local police union also has tried to encourage the occupy protesters to leave that camp putting out a statement saying the occupy oakland protest, now 30 days old, is taking our police officers out of oakland neighborhoods and away from protecting the citizens of oakland. it's time for us to stop directing all of our efforts at policing the small enclave of oakland. and get back to our job of protecting the citizens of oakland and the neighborhoods where our residents live. similar situation in st. louis

where protesters are defying the mayor's friday 3:00 p.m. deadline to leave the downtown park. in new york, small business owners and local residents are so fed up with the protesters they are planning now a counter-protest on monday. eight minutes past the hour. president obama just landed in hawaii a couple hours ago. he is there for the world trade summit, apec. we'll have more on the president's trip in just a bit. also part of the president's trip, while he was making his way out to hawaii, he stopped in san diego, took in a basketball game on the deck of an aircraft carrier. one of the coolest things you'll see. we'll have more on what the president is up to. and the major league baseball player kidnapped in venezuela is free and is doing fine. that's according to venezuelan state television. wilson ramos who plays for the washington nationals, was found

27 minutes past the hour. reynolds and i and people who watch the show know we're big sports fans. this whole big joe paterno thing now, there's few schools around the country where you name the school and the first thing that comes to mind is a coach. penn state is one of them. >> no offense to penn state fans, most people don't know what a nittany lion is. post people know joe pa. he's the figure head. i would think and argue, i know they have the president of the university, i would argue he's the most powerful person in the university. >> listen to how one student at

the school put about the impact joe paterno, a football coach, has had on that school. >> the common theme is that people wish he was allowed to go out on his own time. most agree that he probably missed the ball and should have reported more. i think there was a hope he would go out, get some type of good-bye because he's done so many good things for the campus for the school, both on the football field and off the field. our library is named after him. even academically he made a mark on the university. >> and reynolds, you know this old argument, people will get involved in it, it's just football. the grand scheme of things, these universities are supposed to be there to educate people and get their lives started. so why would football -- why is there so much power and money put into it? the simple answer is frankly money. >> absolutely. >> it's money. >> no question about it. there are so many people who feel a great deal of sympathy, understandably so. we are talking about a legend. a guy coaching the game forever. he's part of college football.
