killed today. saudi arabia has drafted a formal condemnation saying the government there is violating human rights and the u.s. ambassador to syria directly blames the syrian military for killing hundreds. here now is ivan watson. >> reporter: residents of the besieged city of homs a woke once again at dawn on saturday morning to another day of sustained bombardment. that is routine. a deadly routine they have lived for for the better part of a week, a routine that has killed hundreds of people and wounded hundreds more. at the hands according to the u.s. ambassador to syria of the syrian military. take a listen to what ambassador robert ford had to say to wolf blitzer friday night. >> we know who is shelling homs and it is not the armed opposition groups. it's the government. and that's why i wanted that picture put on our facebook

account so people could see there is the artillery and that's what's firing at homs right now. the armed opposition has rifles, it has machine guns, it even has a few rocket propelled grenades, but it doesn't have artillery. only one side in this has artillery. >> reporter: the syrian government has consistently argued since the beginning of the uprising that it is fighting armed wrists linked to al qaeda. that's how they've termed with a started as peaceful protests around the country. increasingly we're seeing signs that the opposition is resorting to the use of arms to fight back against the syrian security forces. one syrian opposition group claimed responsibility for killing ten syrian soldiers in the northern province as the result of an improvised explosive device and an ambush. those are some of the tactics and weapons we saw in neighboring iraq during the bloody u.s. occupation of that

>> it's got to be rick santorum. and for the reason alone that he has the momentum at his back. some very big wins for him this past week in colorado, missouri and minnesota. he's trying to position himself as the alternative to mitt romney. now, rick santorum, mitt romney and newt gingrich all addressed the conference yesterday. santorum got a very good reception here. mitt romney might have stird up a little bit of controversy by using this word when he was describing himself as a conservative. he called himself a severe conservative when he was the governor of massachusetts and in some ways that has kind of put off conservatives that have attended this conference. newt gingrich focused all of his fire power on president obama. so we should know in the next hour, hour and a half who will win the straw poll and i have to tell you, the audience behind me, thousands of people are waiting to hear from sarah palin who will speak at 4:30 here. >> before sarah palin speaks,

how does that work exactly and why is it that many of the candidates, maybe three out of the four candidates, are feeling like it's an important victory to be had if they were to win the straw poll? >> what's interesting is that the four candidates in the race right now, gingrich and is an or rum, romney and paul being the fourth candidate, ron paul has decided no to tt to play here. and he has won the straw poll the last two years and he's won it because he has been able to draw a lot of young voters to come here to the cpac conference and to vote for him. but instead, ron paul is focusing all his attention on the maine caucuses which of course we'll have the the results of those tonight. but for here, it means different things to different people. if rick santorum were to win

before. what toppled mubarak was not people gathering in square. this is an important tool, but also workers and students and farmers taking part in striking and using the power to bring down this regime is what's going to settle this revolution once and for all. and we'll in-to push for that and it's obvious that it's working because many of those that are calling for these strikes and this kind of civil disobedience are being cracked down upon and many activists have been arrested. and being accused of trying to agitate for the strike.

gabrielle giffords is synonymous with courage. in pennsylvania, there's a new pilot program under way to make sure convicted drug felons get welfare -- who are getting welfare are not using drugs. supporters of the program say it's one way to make sure public assistance isn't being wasted. susan candiotti joins us to talk more about this program. not everyone however is thrilled about the idea? >> that's right. not everyone. some people it's just an attempt on blame drugged a difficults for their disease. supporters say by testing those with prior felonies, they're making sure taxpayer money goes to those who are most deserving. so starting with just one county, those drug felons will face random drug tests. it they fail, they get another crack at treatment, but a third strike means no more welfare checks forever. one state senator says it's exactly what his constituents

want. >> the last thing they want to do with their tax dollars is to pay for welfare benefits for people to buy their own illegal drugs. that's just crazy. >> a law in florida that called for a drug test for anyone on welfare was stopped by the courts ruling amounted to an illegal search. but pennsylvania thinks its law will be harder if not impossible to challenge because it targets only drug felons. >> so what do advocates for the outreach programs think? >> some are not impressed. they argue that these random tests for drug felons who want to get welfare stigmatize the poor and could strip them of a lifeline. recovery can be a very long struggle. >> there's not a lot of evidence that says large numbers of people on welfare are using drugs. this is a mean spirited

harassment of poor people. >> that was alan jennings with the community action committee. he says pennsylvania is going toest people convicted of drugs in exchange for public assistance, the government ought to force anyone getting public money. he mentioned the bankers who got bailouts or those taking a deduction on their mortgages. >> thanks so much for that update. all right. the rock's new movie journey 2 is out this weekend.

intent. >> there's certainly some evidence of intent because what has surfaced is some of the prior statements made by george hughley and some of the evidence that goes to his violent nature. but i think in the first week of trial, as riveting as this trial has been, what we have seen is an individual who clearly had alcoholism issues, some of the evidence that surfaced was that the day of the event may 2nd, 2010, there is some eviden'10", george hughley v had 20 drinks before the incident. even testimony from his lacrosse players, his friends that talked about his alcoholism. i don't think even at this point, even before we've heard the defense, that we have the necessary intent for first-degree murder. >> so if you you agree with in a, we're talking about manslaughter there because will is evidence showing that he

admits to kicking in love's door, that he grabbed her, but he says he didn't choke her and when he left, she was on the bed, but it was news on him and you saw that that in that videotape and you heard in the audiotape that he was surprised that she was found dead. >> that's very nice to be surprised and you should not be surprised that i do not agree with avery. the door was not kicked in, he punched a hole through her bedroom door which was locked. i think that pretty much goes to intent. he stole her laptop computer which had on it the e-mail that said i should have killed you. she had bruises, a black eye, she was beaten almost to a pulp. this guy is an animal, this is a tore risk crime.

conditions because of blinding snow there. the weather service issued a lake-effect snow warning overnight. up a foot of snow fell making for dangerous conditions there. the storm also caused hundreds of flight cancellations and delays at chicago's two major airports. let's check in with jacqui jeras. is where the storm heading next? >> eastward. it's up and down the east coast. we are getting heavy snow across the great lakes at this hour. there is a live picture of our nation's capital. if you look close, you can see some of the big fat flakes flying through as the squall moves through at this hour. not going to get much for accumulation in washington, d.c., but pretty to look at. you can't see a whole lot in some of these snow bands. they have been extremely heavy. that's as cold air pulls in on the back side of this low. it's getting a lot of enhancement off the lakes we had a lot of accident and trouble in the cleveland area as well as

akron, ohio, where visibility is down to nothing. one of the reasons is the great lakes are wide open. i have a couple of satellite images that are cool. i want to show you from noaa. this is lake michigan right here. you can see the thumb from the state of wisconsin. there you can see some of the ice in the bay in that area now a picture of lake erie. it is the shallowest of all the great lakes. this time of year normally it's frozen over. this is all we are seeing right now for ice on lake erie. you get the cold air blowing over the warmer lakes. that makes the snow bands much heavier. it's cold on the backside of this low, too. temperatures feeling much more indicative of where they should be for this time of year. cooler than average by about 10 to 15 degrees across the plains into the east today. low temperatures tonight because of the wind are going to be feeling colder than some of these numbers you see on the map. i might want to mention places like florida. orlando, disney world, wind chilled advisory for tonight is

with dwayne johnson. >> dwayne johnson plays the step dad to a boy played by josh hutcherson. this is the sequel to the popular "journey to the center of the earth" from a couple of years back. this isn't essential. you don't have to have seen the first one, but it is the same kid character. dwayne is his step dad. they are trying to bond. they end up going on this adventure to the mysterious island that turns out jules vern novel was based in reality, according to the movie. >> whoa! this island shrunk us. >> sean, what does vern say about this? >> that music has a very "jurassic park" like thing to

it. is this a kids' hoffy? >> it's definitely a kids movie. i know your cnn i-reporter says this is for the whole family. it's a movie for the kids. i can't say i enjoyed this, nor did any of the other parents at the screening i was at, but the kids loved it. the kids thought it was awesome. this is a movie you'll have to take your children to, but you have to sit through it. the movie is full of bizarre sequences. for instance, there is this five-minute bit with the rock flexing his pectoral muscles. the characters are bouncing berries off it. at the end of that sequence you authentic, did that really just happen? >> apparently he did do that. what is your grade? >> mostly disappointing. i give it a "d." >> an "a" on the pecs, right? >> depends on what you're into. >> i'll say "a."
