11:00 am
from cnn's world headquarters, bringing you news, and analysis from across the nation and around the globe, live from studio 7, this is cnn saturday morning. good morning from atlanta this is cnn saturday morning, it's february 25th hello i am deborah feyerick. former south african president nelson mandela is recovering from a hernia
11:01 am
operation. we'll go live to johannsburg in a few moments. primaries in michigan and arizona are three days away. gas price mot just imagination have jumped 30 cents in the last month. we'll go inside the numbers. we begin with breaking news out of afghanistan, at least two u.s. officers were and killed in the interior ministry in cable. nick paton walsh, nick, how did it happen inside? >> reporter: that is the big question. people i think are struggling, isaf, nobody can pin it down. we do know the americans were inside a secure part of the ministry, perhaps their own separate compound, we do know that the gunman according to isaf is not a westerner,
11:02 am
probably are afghan, that has not been confirmed by any afghan officials. and we know the taliban claimed responsibility. it's not to say they necessarily did it, they have a track record of previously claiming responsibility for things. sometimes it turns out to be true, other times not, they are saying in this case, one of their brave fighters is their phrase, shot dead four americans, there is a discrepancy there, on this interior ministry compound, claiming this is a response for the americans burnings of quran a week ago on an air base. a lot of misinformation and confusion here at this point but at the end of the day it has left two americans dead. deb? >> when we talk about the interior ministry, for those folks in the u.s. who may not know what that is, explain what it and how many u.s. troops you would have inside that compound. >> reporter: this is a key part of the afghan government here, the key ministries, heavily
11:03 am
guarded, all around the capital, where many isaf, nato, american personnel work, advise ministries, many training one can imagine the interior ministry we understand in that particular part where these americans were, there are about ten nato foreigners there, so that gives you a slight indication as to how secure this particular part of that ministry must have been in itself and the questions clearly circulating how did this happen, and immediate response from isaf's commander, general john allen as well as condemning the attack and calling the attacker a coward, is withdrawing all isaf advisors in and around the capital. unclear that will affect the nato training mission here, trying to get afghan forces ready to take over security here so nato could withdraw on the tight time table. the message is a deeply psychological impact on nato troops working here, this should
11:04 am
have been the safest place and it feeds in protest in the quran burning. >> almost as if parallel would be if someone opened fire in the pentagon, slightly the equivalent. nick paton walsh, appreciate you bringing us the latest. another developing story, nelson mandela is in the hospital after under going hernia surgery. his doctors say he will be released in a couple days, at 93, his health has declined in recent years, but a government spokesman says this time there is nothing to worry about. joining me from johannsburg is cnn's correspondent. his health is a matter of national importance. what are you hearing? >> reporter: it is a matter of national importance, south africans very worried, wanting
11:05 am
more information in the last 30 minutes or so we received an updated statement from the presidency. dealing with all the communication around mr. mandela's health, this is what they're saying, mr. mandela in satisfactory condition in hospital, comfortable, he went through planned procedure, we can only assume the hernia surgery that our sources told us about to investigate the causes of this abdominal complaint the president tonight saying mr. mandela is fine and conscious and doctors are satisfied with his condition, which they say is consistent with his age. they are stressing, deborah, mr. mandela is not in any danger and that is exactly what the party the african national congress has been saying the whole day. let's take a listen, deborah.
11:06 am
>> it's not an emergency, it was pre-planned, it finally happened today. >> is it life-threatening? >> it's not. he's fine. he's okay. and that is what we have been communicating to south africans, no need to panic. >> reporter: the ruling party, the african national congress and the presidency telling south africans and the world not to panic, and that mr. mandela is expected to be released from hospital, discharged from hospital either tomorrow or monday. we are still unclear which hospital he's at the presidency saying they want to afford him a privacy as he recovers. >> thank you very much and we know you will be keeping a close eye on this throughout the day, thank you so much. syrian forces pound resistant strongholds killing at least 36 z far today.
11:07 am
so far today. it raises question about the effectiveness of the cease fire planned by members of the outside world. dozens of countries agreed yesterday to increase pressure on president al-assad while laying the ground work for political trans sig, includes delivering humanitarian aide, giving legitimacy to the syrian opposition and endorsing a joint arab un peace keeping force. in the epicenter of the violence, homs rocked by shelling every day for the past three weeks. coming up in the next half hour, michael holmes will be joining us with the latest on the efforts to try to help people in this growing humanitarian crisis. the marine corps released the names of the seven men killed in the helicopter crash near the arizona-california border. they collided during a train mission wednesday night.
11:08 am
they were preparing for deployment to afghanistan. the names of the dead. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. almost time for the next big showdown for the republican presidential hopefuls. mitt romney desperately needs to win michigan on tuesday, and after arizona and washington state next week, well it's on to super tuesday. our joe johns is in troy, michigan, and boy, if mitt romney doesn't do well in michigan, there are going to be a whole new round of speculation. >> reporter: that's for sure, deb. as you know, michigan is a state where mitt romney grew up, the state where his father was the governor, back in the 1960s, but i have to tell you we've been placing so much emphasis on the state of michigan that arizona
11:09 am
has sort of been ignored to some extent. they have a primary as well on the 28th of february. and we're seeing new numbers that are very interesting. american research group polled out now, shows that we're looking at statistical tie in the state of arizona. mitt romney leading 39% to 35%, but within the margin of -- four point margin of error, so it's a statistical tie there. very tight here in michigan. the other thing we have to say about arizona, a large number of early voters have sent in their ballots and according to the polling that we've seen, suggests romney is doing better among those people who voted early, and santorum apparently doing better among the people who haven't voted yet. we'll have to see how that
11:10 am
shakes out. today the emphasis on troy, michigan and where i am is at a gathering conservative activists who have already heard from rick santorum in an hour or so expect to hear from mitt romney. these guys have been going across the state hitting each other pretty hard in advance of the primary. deb, back to you. >> each of the candidates have to resonate with people they are reaching out to. are they drawing large crowds at these events? >> reporter: yeah, i think so. we saw a pretty good size crowd, honestly yesterday, so much made about it that an event where mitt romney appeared at ford field, the big football stadium, there were 1200 people, which is a good size crowd for lunch time on a friday, in a big city where people work, but problem was it was such a big room it didn't look like many people at all.
11:11 am
it seats 65000 folks. they had to put him there because the detroit economic club ran out of space at the smaller venue, was going to put people in, that is where they ended up. here in troy, michigan, 1000 people here, interested to hear what the candidates have to say. you see crowds big and small i'd say pretty good size. not the kind of things you would see say in south carolina outside, i saw huge, huge crowds there. >> a little colder in detroit, in troy, michigan. >> reporter: exactly. >> joe jones, i'm sure you're looking forward to arizona. the youngest son of robert f. kennedy allegedly tried to take his two day old son out of
11:12 am
a new york hospital last month. january, despite a nurse's warnings. according to wnbc, nurses tried to stop kennedy of taking the boy out of the maternity ward and out of the hospital. he allegedly twisted one nurse's wrist, kicked another in the groin, fell down himself while holding the newborn. kennedy and his wife say they did nothing wrong. wild weather blowing through the south, two confirmed tornadoes, we'll tell you who got the worst of it. another story, where oh where, will it end? gas prices rose 12 cents this week alone. erwear. same great protection. erwear. depend®. good morning. great day. like splenda® essentials™ no calorie sweeteners. this bowl of strawberries is loaded with vitamin c. and now, b vitamins to boot.

fixes to this problem and you know we can't just drill our way to lower gas prices. if we're going to take control of our energy future and avoid these gas spikes down the line, we need a sustained all of the above strategy that develops every available source of american energy, oil, gas, wind, solar, nuclear, biofuels and more. we need to keep developing the technology that allows to us useless oil in our cars and trucks and buildings and plants. that's the strategy we're pursuing, that is the only solution to the challenge. >> the gop was quick to respond. >> president obama's policy has resulted in an unprecedented slowdown in new exploration in oil and gas. offshore drilling permits are being issued at less than half the rate of the previous administration. the average number of leases
11:16 am
issued on public lands is less than half that during president clinton's term. not only will the slow down in domestic production drive up fuel prices, it also takes away jobs. from tens of thousands of oil industry workers. >> well, prices have jumped again, rising overnight, another 3 cents. the national average is now 3.67 for a gallon of regular unleaded, but of course you probably know that having filled up your tank, that is up 0 cents from a month ago. you might not believe how bad it's gotten in parts of the country, josh is here with that, not good you have to rub your eyes, you think you're not seeing what you're seeing. >> a few weeks ago we talked about the idea that it's possible there could be $5 gas by spring in some city, now a few weeks, incredible number,
11:17 am
higher than that in some places. look at this video, this is something everyone is looking in orlando, gas prices up near $6. if you're near a tourist site, not a lot of competition, there will be higher prices, the average in florida is under $4. in los angeles, prices over $4, average for california is now over $4. the numbers are coming at us every day they keep jumping. we'll show you video, there is a bunch of factors come together. some of it is uptick in the economy which gets people moving again and contribute to what is going where oil is traded. there are security concerns in oil producing nations, a lot about iran. we have had analysts as much as 30 cents in the recent uptick could be concerns surrounding iran and what they might do about oil and close the strait hormuz it's affecting investors. i want to help you get a sense
11:18 am
where your gas dollar goes, i have this screen for you, when you go to the pump, this is where your money goes, by far the biggest factor that determines gas prices is crude oil, refine, marketing, taxes, they cover the local gas station. by far, the biggest factor affecting prices near you is crude oil and i want to help you see how you can determine what it's like in your state. let's zoom in the map from our folks at cnn money. terrific map where it's more red is more expensive. over here, you have a national average in california at 4.20. any state, new york, 3.91. texas, average there, 3.53. another way to look at this i find fascinating, we just updated for you, take a look here, this is how much of your income is going to gasoline. in montana, nearly 11% of your income going to gasoline these days. over her to mississippi, one of the highest, 12%. this has to do with factor
11:19 am
including what the average incomes are are, a lot of numbers come together, it puts perspective for you what you're seeing here, we want you all to have that information, deb, have a good broad sense of what is going on and i will tell you unfortunately, we don't have a lot of of analysts saying the process will end soon. >> what is interesting to me is that in parts of the country the national average is $3.67, but when you look at a gallon that is $2 higher than that, i understand the dynamics, you have to wonder whether there won't be investigations to make sure that people aren't trying to gouge folks at the pump, knowing that crude oil i think is now $120 for a barrel, plus you have the demand in asia, interruption of supply, all of that. now, how do people find the cheapest gas? >> you're right on both fronts. any time you see the uptick in
11:20 am
the prices more talk about potential price gouging, we will see what happens. as for finding cheap gas, we want to help you find cheap gas, show everyone my screen. you will go to facebook and twitter, also the blog cnn.com/josh. we posted links that should help you find the cheapest gas in your area. and one other thing you can always do that gets updated all the time, go to twitter, look for #cheapgas. some stations are starting twitt twitter accounts. deb, we want people to save money where they can. smart for gasations to tweet out the prices of their gas, that is how you build customer loyalty. josh levs appreciate it. we'll turn now two confirmed tornadoes caused damage in south carolina and storms toppled

toppling trees and snapping power lines. luckily no injuries. they were part of a storm system that downed trees from florida all the way up to virginia yesterday. what can we expect today? alexandra steele. >> winds were up to 130 miles per hour, but today, these are not tornadic winds, 50 mile per hour winds this morning in north adams, massachusetts. pitsfield, 46 miles per hour. al albany, the story up and down this wind storm that we've got. so here is a look at what we're seeing so far, here is where the threat is delineated in yellow and orange, wind advisory, wind threat into tonight, we will see the winds abate some. on the eastern long island, cape, gusts to 60 not out of the

question. only takes 40 mile per hour wind gusts to knock down trees or power lines. could see problems. also problems at the airports, we have had delays because of some of these at the airport in the northeast. current wind gust, west wind in philly, 35 miles per hour, hd on to your hat. pittsburgh as well, new york city, you get the picture. winds also, sunny in the southwest, beautiful conditions there. pacific northwest, a one-two punch. big snow storm the other day, second storm coming in snow elevations lower this time. southeast dry skies, sunny skies, winds are a factor. in atlanta, 54, won't feel like that. will feel like a cold winter day with those winds coming out. 48 in washington, 40s from new york to boston. windchill ks lower than that because of the strong westerly winds. temperatures have dropped between 15-20 degrees from only 48 hours ago. we were in the 70s in the deep south, cold front moved through,
11:26 am
no threat for severe weather, dry atmosphere, warm buoyancy allowed for tornadoes is gone, temperatures are down but even being so down 20 degrees, still seasonable averages, that is how warm the win has been. >> this is normal. >> it's a relief. thank you so much. two dreaded words this time of year "tax time" and new irs regulations regarding those airline bonus miles, they could cost you. our financial analyst is next. p. and why you still feel the same. but your erectile dysfunction -- that could be a question of blood flow. cialis for daily use helps you be ready anytime the moment's right. you can be more confident in your ability to be ready. and the same cialis is the only daily ed tablet approved to treat ed and symptoms of bph, like needing to go frequently or urgently. tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and medications, and ask if your heart is healthy enough for sexual activity. do not take cialis if you take nitrates for chest pain, as this may cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure.

frequent flyer miles you may have to pay taxes. the irs might consider themselves income, a gift. i asked our financial analyst, clyde anderson, to explain. >> so say for example a case happened with citibank, they rewarded customers for opening up an can with 25,000 miles. when you get an award, it's a gift. anything over $600 you receive as a gift is taxable. so it's income. so you have to report it and usually you get a 1099 that was a shock. >> how will the bank handle that, look, i saw 20,000 miles by getting a credit card my wheels started turning, i started planning the next trip, but are they going to have to cut back on that in. >> it's law, they have to disclose it. you have to make sure you read the small print, make sure you're asking a tax professional when you get these things, there are other things that can be ipad, concert tickets, other
11:30 am
things that may be taxable if they are giving this to you as an incentive, you didn't do anything to get it besides opening up the account. >> yes, but one might argue, one could play devil's advocate, i'm opening up the account, giving the bank my business, this is like high interest for example. >> you may look at it that way, uncle sam doesn't see it that way. if you used the credit card to earn points or do things, you're using the credit card, you're paying something and you get a reward back. when you get some sort of incentive to do something, to join, it's an enticement, they are giving to you join it's income to the irs. >> what new things are they looking to tax, home improvement loans? >> a lot of people get grants from the state, these can be taxable, some people have down upgrades to their home, utilities, they don't make you pay the taxes back but if you
11:31 am
upgraded a heater system or hot water system, they don't tax that but may tax the free money people get from the state to do upgrades, you have to be careful and make sure and also with life insurance if you surrender a policy, that money is taxable. some people don't understand that. well, the race for michigan and arizona is getting really interesting. with mitt romney and rick santorum running neck-in-neck, all that coming up just a moment away.

top stories now, former south african president nelson mandela is recovering from hernia surgery. he could be home in a couple days. a government spokesman says this is nothing to worry about but at age 93, people are going to worry about a revered world leader and no bell prize winner. the operation was planned to deal with a long standing problem. all military advisors for the international security forces are being pulled out of afghan government ministries. that is after at least two americans both nato service members were shot and killed inside the interior ministry in kabul. the taliban is claiming responsibility for the attack,
11:35 am
saying it was in response to the burning of qurans at a u.s. air base. protests over the quran burning are now in the fifth day and they have been deadly. four people killed, 50 others injured. as people took to the streets near the un's offices, officials said the crowd tried to burn down the building. american officials including president barack obama have apologized for the quran burning calling it an unintentional error. to syria, where a key ally of the government is now changing sides. hamas, the syrian backed terrorist organization, now says they are backing the anti-government activists. the activists are fighting for their lives in places like homs. we have this incredible video from inside syria, showing the growing humanitarian crisis and the ferocious battles street by
11:36 am
street for freedom. something you will only see here on cnn. the images recorded by a french journalist named mani, alongside the anti-government fighters. [ gunshots ] >> guerilla warfare like this is relentless and terrifying. the fighters appear fearless and take crazy risks. but they still find time to look out for mani. >> back at headquarters, the battle is raging.
11:37 am
syrian force detonated a bomb where government snipers are trapped. after more than 12 hours, the snipers are still putting up a fight. casualties are mounting. >> that is a look at the intense violence anti-government activists are facing. today has been no different with more shelling by the syrian military. michael holmes is following developments from beirut, michael what are we hearing out of syria today? >> reporter: in short, more violence. while the world leaders met in tunisia on friday to talk about
11:38 am
humanitarian aide and united front, the syrian regime is talking the same language it has been talking for months, that is violence. shells pounding in the city of homs and the neighborhood of baba amr, where the western journalists are waiting to be taken out. the shells were coming at a rate of one a minute earlier this morning. they started at 5:00 a.m., we spoke to him half an hour ago, 13 hours later the shells are still falling, 75 people have died around syria today. 31 of those in homs alone. despite the talks, there is no sign of the violence letting up in syria and the bodies continue to pile up. deb? >> michael, what is fascinating is in that clip of video you hear the fighter ask the
11:39 am
photographer are you okay? it's almost as if the fighters are desperate to get their story out you have president assad killing his own people, journalists, it's as if there is a fence around syria where people can't really get in to take a clear look and humanitarian efforts they can't get in. >> reporter: that's right. when it comes to the activists, the ones we talk to each and every day inside homs, they are very brave people going out there and shooting these videos you see uploaded. several of them have been killed doing so. many others have been wounded doing so. these were ordinary people before all this started. they have been turned in war correspondents, basically, uploading videos at great risk. as far as humanitarian situation in homs and baba amr in particular, the red cross went in 24 hours ago now that they went in and pulled out seven wounded syrians and 20 ill
11:40 am
syrians from baba amr. they were hoping to go back in again at first light and start bringing out more wounded syrians from baba amr, that hasn't happened. the shelling continued, simply too dangerous. i spoke to the international committee for the red cross representative in damascus earlier, he said negotiations were still ongoing, this is like an hour-and-a-half ago, he still had hope of getting in baba amr today and getting out more people. you can see behind me it's dark. i think the chances of them getting in are fairly slim. they haven't given up hope but they will try again tomorrow. deb? michael holmes for us there, thanks so much. we'll touch base with you later on, thanks a million. rick santorum and mitt romney, running neck and neck in the polls. so what does next week's primaries in michigan and arizona have in store for them? i spoke to cnn contributor maria
11:41 am
cardona and lenny mcalester. >> it didn't seem he was prepared to receive the attacks to be the big target, going in this as the front-runner, nationally, he should have understood that he was going to be the one that was receiving all these attacks from all sides and should have been ready with a lot more pivot. seemed that romney was able to get under his skin, having said all that, i do think that he still performed well in terms of showing that he is the consistent conservative, that he is still the candidate that can be the anybody but romney, and what we've seen from romney especially this week in michigan, is that he still hasn't been able to seal the deal. so i think that santorum still has a chance here, still neck in neck in michigan and arizona and looking forward to super tuesday. so we'll see. >> lenny, mitt romney is from michigan, people have been
11:42 am
talking about that, he tried to make the connection with the state that the trees are better, the streets are better, he drives their cars, but he still hasn't sold himself to voters there. why do you think? >> he hasn't sold himself to voters because just like the other 49 states that he has campaigned in and sent ads into, he doesn't inspire voters. i go back to the debate on wednesday. one word adjective, mitt romney picks "resolute" rick santorum picked "courageous" neither picked presidential. if you don't see presidential going against an incumbent president, economy getting better, done fairly well overseas, he will be a hard guy to beat. mitt romney despite the structure and money and republican establishment getting behind him, he has not done a good job inspiring people he's
11:43 am
presidential the one word he should have picked wednesday. >> we want to point out you're the republican analyst and you're the one saying that about these two men. what is so interesting to me you look at mitt romney, you look at rick santorum it's clear that neither of them has a lock and so what does that mean when they have to go up -- when either one has to go up against president obama? what do you think about that, maria? it almost seems like they are fighting for something -- i don't know what they're fighting for on some levels. >> i think that is the difficulty the republican party finds themselves in, deb. the more that americans look at what these candidates stand for, in the debates, in the campaign rallies and all the events, the more that these candidates are focused on a smaller and smaller section of the republican party, meaning that in all of their events and all their talking
11:44 am
points, they are alienating latinos, women, independent voters, as president obama continues to speak to the middle class and to working class voters about the problems that they care about, which is the economy, which is creating jobs, continuing on this path, to economic growth the republican candidates are beating each other up. right now romney is leading with 39% over santorum's 35% in arizona. that is according to the arg polls. if nascar had a super bowl, this would be it. fans are gearing up for tomorrow's daytona 500. an added attraction is danica patrick's first 500. spark card from capital one. spark cash gives me the most rewards of any small business credit card. it's hard for my crew to keep up with 2% cash back on every purchase, every day. 2% cash back. that's setting the bar pretty high. thanks to spark, owning my own business has never been more rewarding.
11:45 am
11:47 am
if you're a nascar fan, it's the super bowl and the world series all wrapped up in one single race. tomorrow's daytona 500 even bigger this year because of the major first timer, joe carter of hln sports in daytona and boy, joe, danica had a close call in qualifying. >> reporter: she did, she's had a crazy 24 hours. thursday wreck hurd car, friday in qualifying proved she is a big stage big moment athlete. she was the fastest car on the track in yesterday's nationwide qualifying event ran 182 miles an hour on the track. won the poll, in over an hour, she will be just the second
11:48 am
woman in the history of the sport to lead the race when it starts. she is proving she is a contender among the boys in this sport. >> you look at her even the inside pictures of the crash, she was prepared, knew what to do when that car hit that wall. >> reporter: yeah, on thursday when she smashed in the wall you will see in the video she removes her hands from the steering wheel, there is speculation it looked like she was afraid to hit the wall like most of us would, not a professional stock car driver would, she said that was a safety maneuver she learned by removing the hands, protects her wrists and hands from geth injured. she is showing new things in the sport. i can't say i've ever seen men do that when they crash in the wall. >> makes perfect sense, obviously. for those of us who don't follow nascar religiously, the car is kind of totaled, so what do they do, do they travel with other cars? >> of course, yes. so for the daytona 500, on
11:49 am
sunday, to more oh, she will use the back up car. in a hour she will use a different car, they travel with different cars, she is not -- she has other cars prepared for her. >> out of curiosity, again, we all have our favorites, does it put her at a disadvantage to not have the initial car she was working out with or are mirror images of one another? >> reporter: there are little differences, obviously, one car to the next, but you would hope your crew chief and engineers put together the same kind of car whether the original car or back-up car. she feels like she joked with us in the media room after she crashed let's hope the back-up car is faster. it's up to drafting, poll position, a lot of factors go in it. >> very quickly, what is the mood there of the people, are they excited to see her race? >> reporter: absolutely.
11:50 am
nascar loves what danica patrick does to the sport. whenever she races, she has been on the circuit a couple year, this is her first full season, but whenever she's around tv ratings go up, merchandise sales go up, so nascar loves the new eyeball that say she brings to the sport. she's the talk of daytona. when i got off the plane a couple of days ago, that's all people were talking about. she's on the front page of every newspaper here. people are buzzing about danica patrick. i read an interesting article that nascar polled its friends in august of 2011, its avid nascar fans, 80% of them say that they think danica helps the sport. 87% of them said they want her to do well this season. >> that's wonderful. all right, well absolutely, i'm sure there will be a lot of people watching to see how she does, joe carter, thanks so much. and with so much to worry about these days, the question is, is a pair of shoes really worth this? take a look. even rare nikes? it resulted in a stampede, fights, even police.
11:53 am
11:54 am
