manned aircraft and the pilot was able to put some eyes on the wreckage and determine, a, that it crashed and b, looked like there were no injuries on the ground. it's been described as a marshy air on the eastern shore of maryland. this drone, the global hawk can fly up to 11 miles high. it can fly for 30 hours at a time. it can fly for so long and can fly above the weather. here in the united states, it's been used to keep track of wildfires burning in california. it was used to survey some of the damage after hurricane ike. it's been flown overseas as well. one of the five drones that the naval air station in maryland, one of the drone s deployed with the u.s. navy's fifth fleet. the other four go through rue

tie routine training and that's what happened here. >> unbelievable. thank you very much. also happening now, spain's bailout expected to give the u.s. markets a big boost. stocks are down with just about an hour to go until the closing bell. what gives? let's get right to alison kosik. what happened? there was supposed to be a rally today. >> reporter: we did see a bit of rally for about an hour out of gate. when the opening bell rang you saw stocks go higher. that was from relief that there's a solution to a potential banking crisis in spain. what spain did is agreed to a bailout, a rescue package to prop up the banking system that was running out of money. you're seeing why that rally fizzled out. it now comes the questions. how are the funds going to be distributed and beyond spain there's now a full plate of bigger things to worry about. investors are focused on the

next possible bombshell. on sunday greece will be electing its new leaders. will they back austerity measures. if they don't support austerity, that could mean greece leaves the euro. stocks are coming off the best week of the year, so not such a huge surprise to see stocks take a bit of a breather. you're seeing a lot of profit taker as well. >> perspective. thank you very much. also developing now, if presidential appointee involved in a hit and run is back in washington, d.c. we're talking about u.s. commerce secretary john bryson. he was driving in los angeles county on saturday night when the sheriff's department says he rear ended a stopped car. >> at some point after that traffic collision occurred, he got out of vehicle, made contact with the individual but for some reason got back into his vehicle and left the scene.

when he left the scene he struck the vehicle a second time. >> after hitting that car, sheriff's departments say he drove off and a few minutes later hit another car before being found unconscious behind the wheel. the commerce department says bryson suffered a seizure. brianna keilar is live at the white house. he spent the night at the white house. what is the white house reaction to all of this? >> reporter: mostly, the white house is referring a lot of things to the commerce department. there are still details that need to be filled in. the commerce department says there was no drugs or alcohol involved in these crashes. that's what l.a. sheriff's department says. white house press secretary jay carney sort of talking about this. i asked about the timing of this seizure that the commerce department said the secretary had in relation to the accident. all they have said is he was involved in accidents and there

was a seizure. here is what jay carney said. >> what was the timing of the seizure in relation to the accident? >> i'll refer you to the department of commerce for details. >> i've been asking for hours. >> i don't have the details for you. >> can you explain why there seems to be a -- it seems to congress department is saying he was involved in accidents and had a seizure but there's nothing connecting the dots and it's really an important point. >> as i pointed out, the commerce secretary was alone. he had a seizure. he was involved in an accident. i would refer you to the commerce department for more details. those circumstances speak to some of the difficulty in getting details, but beyond that, i don't know. >> does it seem it's causal? >> i'm certainly not a doctor. i was not a presiding doctor on

this case. >> reporter: it appears this may have been a health related accident. at the same time the white house is being very careful. we learned that president obama has not spoken to bryson but he has chief of staff has. president obama learned about it this morning. >> good for you for continuing to ask even though you weren't getting many answers. did the white house say anything about putting bryson on medical leave or is he back to work already? >> reporter: there's nothing on his public schedule today. i think it speaks to the fact he was able to travel from l.a. back to washington in terms of where his health is. carney said he's served effectively and does this affect his service as secretary of commerce, those questions are unanswered. it appears as the white house tries to track down some details and decide where they're going,

welcome back. the egyptian government says mubarak is in a coma today. his condition is described as critical with water building up around his heart. even so, that lawyer says the government prosecutor has denied a request to move the former leader from prison to a military hospital. joining us now from washington hala gorani. what's the latest? >> reporter: the latest is according to the prosecutor spokesperson that a defibrillator has been used implying that his heart might have stopped. today we understand he was having the heart issues. also he slip into a deep coma at one point and his lawyer requested a transfer from prison to a hospital where he could be treated but the transfer request was denied. authorities in egypt are saying, look, they have the equipment and the medical staff they need

in prison to take care of mubarak who is 84 years old. just last week the state news agency reported that he was in a deep depression. he was having a nervous breakdown. nine days now after he was sentenced in connection with the killing of protesters during the initial uprising, the initial revolution in february of 2011. his two sons and wife filed a request to be moved near him in the prison so they could visit him and that request was granted to them. he is able to see his two sons and his wife. that's what he know so far. >> this is an area of world you have visited many times. i'm curious to know he's the former leader of egypt. he's the best known name and certainly a lot of strong feelings about him on either side. is there any way to predict how

people might react if and when he dies? >> reporter: i don't think there is. i think it possibly could be similar to the reaction to his sentencing in connection with the killing of those demonstrators. i think you just have to look at this generation as far as mubarak are concerned. most egyptians have known no other president. a new president will end up being elect in egypt. what's important to understand is it's like pharoah. finally depose and at some point he's going to pass away. there's so much uncertainty as far as where this country is headed next. you have the second round of a presidential election with either a muslim brotherhood cant or the former prime minister of mubarak. it's one of those two men that

will lead egypt. for revolutionaries that's not the best case and for some it's a nightmare. >> i know there was so much talk about the fact that a lot of his deputies were not and were acquitted. i know you're watching all of this for you. we thank you so much for joining us, hala. a witness says it was a massacre for no reason at all. police in alabama are looking for the man they say is behind it shooting six people near auburn university, including two football players. robin roberts is in the headlines. she's going to need a bone marrow transplant. we'll have her emotional revelation. in baltimore. we'll bring you more details. police believe he killed three people near the auburn university campus. at this hour his whereabouts are anybody's guess. desmonte leonard is accused of opening fire at a off campus fire. two former football players are among the dead. david, any word on a motive. what caused all of this. >> it make yous think this guy was gunning for them. that's not the case. it was an off campus party at an apartment complex. people were hanging out and an argument started between a couple of men over a woman. that escalated into a fight. shots were fired and six people ended up getting shot.

three of them killed. two of them auburn football players. >> i want to talk about those wounded in a second but a little more about the man hunt. is it all hands on deck. how wide is it and how many people are involved? do we know? >> the suspect is 22 years old. he's from montgomery, alabama. the search is focusing on montgomery. they think he might be in that area. they have arrested a guy and charged him with lying to him about leonard's whereabouts. they asked him about it and lied about it. >> let's talk about the wounded. three people killed, three people wounded. how are those people doing? are they in the hospital? >> this is such the sad thing about it. all these guys, 19, 20 years old. they were hanging out at a pool having a party at summer sometime like anybody would do near a college campus.

right now one of the wounded was an auburn player. he was released from the hospital. treated and released. he's expected to recover completely and continuing playing in the next season. another young man was shot in the head and people are watching closely to see what happens to him. >> all of the victims so young, under 20 years old or there about. david mattingly watching this for us. thank you very much. another story touched us today. she's beaten breast cancer and now robin roberts says she's whip a rare blood disease that requires a bone marrow transplant. here she is speaking about it. >> my big sister is a virtually perfect match for me. she's there with diane and ann, and she is going to be my donor. she's going to be my donor. i know.

half past the hour. welcome back. it's video with big repu repercussions. a man in california appears to be beating his son with a belt. it happened during a backyard game of catch. he's an elected official and a tee ball and soccer coach. the neighbor shows it to police. police arrest the guy. his name is anthony sanchez.

he's accused of felony child abuse. do they have a case against him? >> they sure do if the prosecutor decide to bring case against him. they have a strong case. in california, alina, you can be charged with this felony child abuse if you intentionally harm a child and results in a visible or internal injury. in this case what better evidence than a video taken of the alleged crime. i suspect that there could very well be criminal charges that arise from this case. >> you're a mother. that's hard to watch. >> it's terrible. >> we should mention that sanchez did resign over the weekend in light of this coming out. he did quickly post his $100,000 bond. he was not issued a restraining order to stay away from the child. we're talking about a felony child abuse accusation and no

restraining order. is that standard procedure? >> not necessarily. that's something people are talking about. it's sort of the talk of the town. typically child protective services when you have a case like this does get involved, does perhaps recommend a different course of action. this is just breaking. we don't know if that's going to happen. my understanding is that the family is away on a trip. he chose not to go away with his wife and his child and his stepson as a direct result of this sort of pending matter. the child is not under his watch at the moment. >> all right. i want to move onto this other story that really got our attention. the kkk, as you know wants to adopt a highway. the program where you keep a section of the highway clean in exchange for a sign acknowledging your community service. this georgia chapter submitted an application to adopt a one-mile stretch of road right

near in north carolina border. state of georgia trying to figure out whether it will allow the group to do so. we should mention a spokeswoman from the local kkk chapter told us, quote, we're not racists. i'm quoting here. we just want to be with white people. if that's a crime then i don't know. it's all right to be black and latino and proud, but you can't be white and proud. i don't understand it. end quote. all we want to do is adopt a highway. go onto say we're not doing it for publicity. that's the statement i'm quoting. sunny. afraid to ask. what do you think about this? kkk says it just wants to adopt a highway no clean it up. isn't the d.o.t. in a bit of a pickle here? >> they are in a pickle because this case has already been tried. it's been tried in missouri and the supreme court found that the kkk could not be prevented from being part of the program because of its political

beliefs. in missouri and we're showing right now of a sign from missouri where the kkk was victorious and was allowed to participate in this program. of course, georgia want a different result from what the supreme court found. they want to challenge the ku klun klux klan. some are saying that perhaps georgia with withdraw from being a part of this adopt a highway program rather than allow them to be part. >> that would be such a shame. civil rights groups call them a domestic terror group. can they be denied on those grounds? >> it could be but i don't suspect it's going to win the day. there is precedent. this fight has already been fought in missouri. it's already arrived at the supreme court. i don't believe that there will

brunt now. the good news is mostly a national forest area, but at this late hour we just got a brand new press release from the press conference there. 100 structures have been lost. not all of this fire is in the national forest. there are actions people being evacuated as the wind changes direction. the wind change is a bit of a good news for the firefighters the as long as they know it's coming. when the winds shift direction it tries to blow the fire back toward the area that's already charred with nothing to burn. that's great as long as the firefighters get out of the way when that turn of the wind happens because sometimes that turn can be quite violent. there you see. they're doing everything they can with this. even people in denver, i've been seeing tweets saying we can't see the mountains. the smoke is so thick from my buildings in downtown denver. we can't see past the foothills because the mountains are gone. you should be able to see the

happying now jerry sandusky is facing one of his alleged victims in a courtroom. he's referred to as victim number four but he's the first witness called by the prosecution. sandusky is accused of sexually abusing that witness and nine other boys over a 15-year period. susan, what has this alleged victim number four said so far in court? >> reporter: alina, it's been very dramatic testimony. this person who is now

testifying is 28 years old, but he testified that going back to 1997, to 1997, he alleged that jerry sandusky raped or sexually assaulted him or molested him more than 40 times. sometimes he said as often as two to three times a week in several different locations, both on campus and off campus. he testified he didn't tell anyone about it because he said, i was too scared to. and in one piece of testimony he also explained during a bowl game when they were out of town and he was in a hotel room, he testified that he and jerry sandusky were in the bathroom of that hotel room when jerry sandusky's wife came into the hotel room. at that point he said that jerry sandusky said was allegedly about to sexually assault him, but when he heard his wife's voice, the witness said he bolted out of the bathroom and that he, the witness, locked the

and the savings. >> the first thing i talked about food is eating more macaroni and cheese. >> we want to know how the family is doing now, so we came back here, to middle class suburban new jersey, six months later to find out. >> did you ever think it would be this long? >> no. >> i thought for sure that he would go back into the corporate world within a month or two. >> but it's been four long years, and they're still barely making it. on an $18,000 income. united way says it takes $60,000 a year for a family of four to get by here. >> i went from making $10 an hour selling shoes. now i'm in a janitorial supply company making about $14, $15 an hour. >> the good news is it's at a small business that's still growing. >> they gave us less food stamps. it's more out of the paycheck.

it's the health insurance for the kids that's my main concern. >> is it still tough? >> yes. >> here's their reality. unable to sell their house, they stopped paying the mortgage in 2009. they expect to be evicted any day. their 18-year-old won't be going to college next year. >> i don't have the money to do it. i just don't want to get a loan and be in debt for a while. >> they still rely on the food pantry. >> one box feeds make two, three people. >> this is the worst we've ever seen. >> the food stamp case load is up 240% since 2007. >> is there a sense of desperation now? >> yes. they thought they had the american dream, you know. and suddenly here they are applying for food stamps and medicaid. >> dad wants new leadership and a plan to create jobs. >> it changes the current structure. get rid of the incumbent and

move onto somebody else. >> but mom has had it with politics. >> they'll never feel it. they'll be taken care of the rest of their lives. i done see how they can possibly change things for people if they don't know what it feels like to be in that situation. >> through it all, though, perspective. >> they tell me they're going to stay with friends and family until they can save up enough money to eventually, hopefully get an apartment. here's what really stood out for me. i asked both the mother and father if they believe one day they will get back to the level they were at, become middle class once again. neither of them believe that that is possible at this point, and as you heard, when it comes to politics, they're not sure if new leadership can change the situation for them at all. alina? >> such a sad story. all right. poppy harlow, thank you for that update. thanks for joining us. i'm alina cho in the cnn
