his last give and take was june 19th at the g-20 summit. we have seen rash of takes on u.s. soldiers in afghanistan. we'll hear more about that in a moment. here is the president taking a question about mitt romney's insistence that the president cease and desist demanding that he let the public see his tax return. >> if you look at the overall trajectory of our campaign and the ads i've approved and produced by my campaign you'll see that we point out sharp differences between the candidates but we don't go out of bounds. when it comes to releasing taxes that's a precedent that was set decades ago including by governor romney's father. on afghanistan, obviously we've been watching with deep concern the so-called green on blue attacks where you have afghan

individuals, some who are enrolled in afghan military and in some cases dressing up as afghan military or police att k attacking coalition forces including our own troops. i just spoke to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff who happen to be in afghanistan. he's having intensive consultations not only with our commander john allen on the ground but with afghan counter parts. i'll will reaching out to president karzai as well. we have to make sure we're on top of this. >> president obama was asked about the remarks over the weekend by congressman todd akin in missouri who has ignited the political fire storm about his comments on abortion. he was asked if he opposes abortion in the case of rape. >> people want to make that as one of those things how do you slice this particularly sort of

ethical question. it seems to me, first of all, from what i understand from doctors that's really rare. if it's a legitimate rape the female body has ways to shut that thing down, but let's assume maybe that didn't work. i think there should be some punishment but the punishment ought to be in the rapist but not attacking the child. >> those comments we just played have echoed across the political spectrum and not long before the congressman spoke there congress akin went on radio show to try to explain what he meant. >> i care deeply for the victims of people who have been raped. they are equally vulnerable and a rain is equally tragic. i made that statement in error. rape is never legitimate. it's an evil act that's committed by violent predators. i used the wrong words in the wrong way. what i said was ill-conceived and it was wrong. for that i apologize. >> i want to go to washington to

dana bash where president obama was asked about congressman akin's remarks. we'll get to what the president said. talk to me about the backlash from akin's own party, republicans here. >> reporter: the walls are really closing in on him big time from his own party from the highest levels of his own party. i spoke to a source at the arm of the republican party that's in charge of electing republicans and this source said it's been communicated that the nrsc is going to take the 5 million dollar that it has planned to put into the race and hold onto it. they're not going to put it in if he is the guy who is going to run against claire mccaskill. the reason is because they believe he puts the majority at risk for republicans. we have a statement carefully

and again in 2004 and his driver's license was revoked when this june crash took place. he shouldn't have been on the road. what are you doing now? you want stronger laws. >> absolutely. it was a suggestion of a friend of mine to start the petition at change.org. that's what we've did. we received a lot of support. >> what do you want changed about the laws? >> i want stronger laws. i want them to revisit the laws and make it so it reflects what's going on in the country. >> do you think that stronger laws would have kept a man like this off the streets? he had a revoked license. >> i can only hope. i think if they enforce the laws that they had set out, it could have kept a lot of people from drinking and driving. >> i know a spokesperson says

you have two russian cosmonauts. here you see they are spending six and a half hours in space. they are installing debris shields and deploying a small science satellite. a commander and flight engineer performing the spice walk with a six member international crew. it includes space travelers from the u.s. and japan. i want to go to my fellow space geek with the details there from miami. the morning it was delayed. what happened? >> about an hour and a half delay. he's the only one of the two that's wearing a helmet cam. usually both have them but in this case it's only one. they had a problem sealing an air lock hatch in between a couple of the compartments.

just in, some sad news to pass along. we're learning of the death of phyllis diller. she was recovering from fall and had been sick for the past couple of months. she had been living in hospice care. northeast signature part of her routine was the cackle. she was 95 years old. tony scott, the man behind so many popular movies and shows. movies like top gun, beverly hills cops. police in los angeles believes he killed himself. he climbed to the top of a bridge in san pedro and jumped sunday. a note was found on the car and

was back in 2003 that then club chairman responded to your letter asking about women members by saying the club was not going to change its policies. the real question today is why now? you think this invitation to two women would have happened without your efforts so many years ago? >> no i do not think it would have happened without our efforts ten years ago. we've been working behind the scenes. we have facilitated a couple of sex discrimination suits against corporations who's ceos are members and collected quite a bit of money for those women. stuff has been going on as they say. >> this progress began with you but it continued as recently of april with what happened with ibm and ceo.

do you think billy payne deserves a bit of credit? >> no. i do not think he deserves any credit. if he was going to do anything he should have done it seven years ago. i think he made a deal saying i'll do the no girls allowed if you let me be chairman. he just could not hold out. i think he made that deal with him and i don't think he deserves any credit now. >> martha critics say all this means is that wealthy, powerful women play golf with wealthy powerful men. how does this help progress? how does this help the rest of our society? >> it's a statement to statement. i always say it's not about golf and playing golf. it's about making deals in corporate america. it's about those halls of power that you're talking about.

the more women we have even if it's just a couple to begin with that cracks open that glass ceiling just a bit further. i hope corporate america will take a lesson from this. augusta national took a beating pr wise for their treatment of women and corporate america needs to take notice. they could do better too. we still just have about 10% of women on corporate boards in the fortune 500. that's not good enough. >> that's what you want to see next. a couple of weeks was the first female ref for football. the news with augusta today. you say the next chipping away would be corporate america and women? >> absolutely. they needed to be doing better. they should have been doing better for the last ten years. we've been hearing for 40 years we have to have more women in the pipeline. i'd say that pipeline is pretty full. let's go ahead and put women

yesterday. do we know who general dempsey is talking with, and being in afghanistan, what is he hoping to accomplish? >> well, this trip wassed long before all of this. but general dempsey in fact there speaking to both afghan and coalition leaders about all of it. but interestingly president obama weighed in today, and listen to he's talking to, have a listen. >> i just spoke today to marty dempsey, the chairman of the joint chief of staff who happens to be in afghanistan. he is having intensive consultations with afghan counter parts. and i'll be reaching out to president karzai as well, because we have to make sure that we're on top of this. >> president karzai, to expect a phone call from president obama about all of this. nine u.s. troops killed in this fashion since august 10th. now really grabbing everyone's attention, if it hadn't before.

so what are they doing about it, brooke? well, improved intelligence, improved screening of those joining the afghan army, u.s. troops wearing their weapons. fully loaded at all times, even on base. but this is now a front and center issue of more troops getting killed. it seems to be happening almost every day now, and no real end in sight, brooke. >> do we know -- i mean, you spoke to the prevention, but the motivation. what is motivating the attackers, might they be taliban attracters? >> well, it's interesting. they're not ruling out that a small percentage of them are. and it's very smart strategy on the part of the taliban to drive a wedge between the afghans and the united nations. they believe, however, that the vast majority of them are afghans with perceived cultural differences with the united states, perceived insults at the hands of coalition forces, some

as we reported this hour, we have now learned sad news. phyllis diller passed away peacefully in her sleep this morning. in fact, her son found her with a smile on her face. she was 95 years old, and apparently she was recovering from a fall. she had been sick for the past couple of months. she had been living in hospice

it was in her act at 8:00. she didn't need a funny hat, a funny wig, the stupid shoes. the mouth was so brilliant. the brain was so brilliant. i adore her. she was so on top of everything. >> how did she help inspire you -- i assume she inspired you. what legacy has she left? >> she was the first. i never thought about it until just now, but she was the first that really did standup. she didn't sing. she didn't dance. she came out and did an hour of great talk. i think she's the first woman that ever really did that. and she came right after tony fields. and tony fields was wonderful. she did big songs. and news came out, and she had things to say, and she said them.
