data. let's go to chad myers, what do you know? >> i know you have been to haiti and that situation. i can't imagine 24 hours in. is storm is on its way to port-au-prince. the worst side of the storm will be there in about 24 40urs. you have 400,000 people or close to that number living in tents and wind going sideways. i can't imagine tomorrow night in haiti, absolutely unbearable. the wind, 45 miles an hour a gust of 50. that is up 5 miles an hour to fr the last update. hurricane hunter aircraft are in it and that is how it gets to be a hurricane before it hits haiti tomorrow, anderson. >> it could become a hurricane tomorrow? >> it's in the very good water now. it's warm. there is not a lot of sheer. there is not wind blowing all over the place and it hits land and then the hurricane goes

away, we are back to ts and over cuba, we are still a tropical storm. and over key west that is when it gets to be a hurricane again and the hurricane center has a category 185-mile-per-hour storm in the gulf of mexico. but in the update, they said that may be very conservative. we have to keep watching. >> 400,000 people in haiti lives in tents from the earthquake still. we have to watch it carefully. a lot of people wondering about the impact on the republican national convention monday. what point do you think we will be able to tell if it looks like it mate hit tampa in a big way. >> well, it's 100 miles away in the center line. if it's a hurricane here, you will have close to hurricane force winds in tampa or at least tropical storm winds. and that point in time, though they may not shut airports down,

convention, leading republicans to hope he talking out of the national picture. here is a sign how politically toxic he is. mitt romney doesn't want to be asked questioned about akin or abortion. the obama campaign sent out on e-mail says women across america deserve to know the truth about romney/ryan's extreme agenda. that notion is part of an effort to paint the romney/ryan ticket as the romney/ryan/akin ticket. take a look. >> they have adopted congressman's akin's policies. >> paul ryan and todd akin, like two peas in a pod. >> and now we have a republican party flat form that was

designed by mitt romney. >> that is the message that the platform, the republican party platform was design bid mitt romney. keeping them honest there are truthful ways of making that message. debbie wassermann schultz, i will talk to her in a moment. i want to show you some of a fund-raising letter she sent out this week. it starts, friend, here is the republican party message po women in 2012, no choice no exceptions. thaf party just voted to embrace akin's position by including a ban on all abortions, including incest on their 2012 platform. then, they called them out and said, here is how she backs it up, guess what? the los angeles times report yesterday that the platform was, and the quote, written at the direction of romney's campaign. those words did appear in the

"l.a. times" but that quote, seems clear, right? but that quote was taken completely out of context. it was ripped out of the senten sentence. if you put it back in the sentence, delegates for mitt romney is voting down substantive changes for the flat form los angeles thats with written at the direction of the comeny campaign. the dnc letter takes the words out of the sentence and uses it to something they don't suggest. there is more than just edits. first, the abortion language in the 20912 platform, it hardly differs from the 2008 language and the 2004 language in the plat fort form. that wasn't writtenly the romney campaign. one person in the room said they

made a number of suggestions on changes but not on the abortion plan. you seemed to link mid romney with todd akin's's policy on aborti abortion. >> well, i think that women need to know the dramatic difference between president obama's view on the women's right to make choices and the democrat party's position. and the romney party. mitt romney's words are very nice, but the bottom line is, is that his campaign just directed the republican party platform to include the most restrictive constitutional amendment to say that women, you have opportunity toe make your -- >> you are saying his campaign -- >> makes no exception at all.

they are cheesy and lame. john is taking his head. we decide to call it what we think it is. and we made a fancy graphic, the part of the show where john king makes you smarter. john? >> three more battle ground state polls out today in and this race, 75 days before the election and days for the republican convention, about as close as you can get. and all the states, obama states in 2008, wisconsin, ohio, and florida. we look at wisconsin and stretch it out, you see this is the "new york times" polls that is a dead heat. proof positive the paul ryan pick is giving them a bounce in wisconsin. it's a battle ground now. the one up place where you do see evidence of immediate help for romney. what is often the decisive battle ground, the state of ohio.

and now, a six-point edge and other polls, showing the race a little closer. and slight advantage for the president in ohio, and anderson, this had is a state where it's almost impossible to do romney wins math without the state of ohio. he has to improve his standing here. and the state of florida, the home state of the republican convention, weather permitting. but at the moment, as close as they come. the president, a slight advantage here, that is within the margin of error a dead heat in the state of florida. the convention, a chance for romney to move the numbers there. and let's look at the key subgroups there. older votes, in a state like florida, the medicare debate, front and center now. you look at the age breakdown, the president, winning among younger voters a key part of his coe could ligs in 2008. and look at this, mitt romney in the state of florida a big 13-point sang. that is better than mccain in

2008 and better than bush in 2004. if romney can hold that, it bodes well for his chances in florida. what does it mean? let's look at how it plays out with the electoral college. if you look, wisconsin, ohio, florida, we have them as tossups. right now, the president, a stronger lean. and romney is a bit behind. 206 of the 270 he needs. if romney can pull out florida, ohio, look at that, he is closing -- he is pasted president, knocking on the door. the next president of the united states, needs one more big state. that is if he e can all three. what if the president won florida and lost none of the states he has right now? if he wins florida and ohio, to it's game over. that shows you why the three states we are talking about now, it's so critical. romney has a tougher map.

he needs to win florida, needs ohio and would like to win wisconsin. the three states, florida and ohio, if they are not red come november, very hard to see romney in the white house, anderson. >> john, i want to bring in candy crowley, chief political correspondent. a point of two increase here and there. what did you think is behind that? >> a couple things and the dynamic of the race, like the poll numbers, haven't changed that much. what you have are counterforces. you have the economy, had is a drag on president obama still when you look at the polls. any time you have an economy showing the kind of figures this economy shows now, it's a danger zone for the president. on the other hand, you have mitt romney, who the american photoer has not yet warmed up to.

they still have a skepticism about mitt romney and theed aer advertising from obama and the folks supporting him, has done well in tamping down any expectations that mitt romney would pull ahead in this sort of economy. you have two forces. the economy and the likable toty of romney, and really he is show nothing headway. so when you look at the debates and the conventions. >> how much of that do you think is the addition to ryan to the ticket? >> i say a bit more ift. if you look at wisconsin there is no doubt that paul ryan is a point of two in the home state. he has energized the preponderate base. if you look at florida, ohio, one of the things that is clear, it has helped among the conservative base. you have a fascinatinging

demographic, hundreds of millions are dollars. if you look at the latest polling, in part because of paul ryan, governor romney is rock solid among conserve of tifs and romney is solid among liberals and democrats. and so it's a bit of paul ryan. the ads have been mostly a wash. and the super pacs what they are doing, is confusing people. >> in the battle for the undecided for the independents, it doesn't show anything for the akin remarks. when the poll was taken. do you they may have an impact, just the whole discussion about abortion and abortion right? >> we'll see. i think the romney team is lucky they have the conventions back and they can turn the conversation back to where they want, which is the economy. it doesn't surprise me there is no real switch here, because we know there is a huge gap between the percentage of women intent

of voting for obama and those intent of voting for romney. there is already a huge gap there. and to add one thing about what you and john talked about, yes, it's certainly going to be about the swing voters and more than that, this is why we got the ryan pick, it's about getting your voters enthusiastic. it's a turn on election more than a message election. >> how much of a bump can a candidate get and how much does that bump last? whatever bump, it has fade ped for a number of candidates. >> they do tend to fade, especially for the candidate that goes first. and romney is going first. i remember leaving atlanta with michael d michael due dukasis and there were 17 points ahead.

we will have a lot of local coverage and national cover lage. he would love to boost his number there. and more than a two or three point bounce, they go deeper in the polls. candy is right. they are defined romney as a rich guy who doesn't understand and they made the case he doesn't care. that is what they have to move. and i understand, does he get your problems? and governor romney leads among seniors. he needs to boost that number. and when it comes down a week later, they are going to hammer romney and ryan on medicare. so romney needs to boost his standing among all the voters and get to the perception that the obama people needs to paint, he doesn't care about every day americans. >> thank you. an amazing story coming up. a texas county judge is facing calls to resign from his position after saying civil car with break out if obama is re-elected.

latest. how are people preparing for the storm. >> reporter: what is incredible with the tropical storms and hurricanes i have covered, i have never gone through a city and a capital like port-au-prince with absolutely no preparations whatsoever. in wealthier neighborhoods, there may be. and those people are going to shelters and churches and police stations. here, ten minutes away from the presidential palace, this is a tent city, this is the neighborhood, there are hundreds of people here, and we had to notify at least eight or nine of them that a storm called isaac was on the way. people are alarmed but they feel if they leave, someone will come and take their place in the only homes they had since the earthquake. these people are staying. we will theass than 24 40urs and we haven't seen anyone leave here for shelter. they are sticking it out. >> amazing they haven't been notified. flooding for people is a real
