death suit, where the family is alleging he is overworked is a tougher one, because he was paid a lot of money and banking on the money to sustain his existence and therefore he entered into it voluntary and not to say they can't prevail, but it is going to be tougher. >> and thank you joey jackson as always. thank you, everyone for watching today. i want to pass the baton to my colleague suzanne malveaux who starts right now with "newsroom international." we heard the republicans and now the democrats get their turn. i'm suzanne malveaux from the cnn grill where the democratic national convention gets under way tomorrow. already they are setting the stage for the democrats to try to convince voters to re-elect president obama. and we will be here throughout the convention to highlight the speeches and the events and take a closer look at what is at
12:01 pm
stake for the democrats. and focusing on the key issues, jobs and the economy, and we will preview the speeches leading up to president obama's acceptance speech on thursday night. first, we will also bring you some of the sights and sounds here from charlotte. carolina fest is going on right now. organizers say it is a chance to celebrate and honor american workers, and it is going to be lots of music and food and we will see all of that. per f performances including james taylor and janelle monet and others. if you have seen "the big la w lebowski" you know that jeff bridges is the dude. and he is promoting a couple of causes, but first the democrats are kicking off the convention with a question that is lingering from the republican convention last week and that is are americans better off than they were four years ago, and in a cbs interview, maryland governor martin o'malley said no, but he blamed president bush. listen.
12:02 pm
>> can you honestly say that people are better off today than they were four years ago? >> no, but that is not the question of this election. the question without a doubt, we are not as well off as we were before george bush brought us the bush job losses and the bush recession and the bush deficits and the series of desert wars charged for the first time to the national credit card. yeah, but -- i want to bring in democratic strategist and political correspondent james carville, and we have done a lot of grills, but we will get into the menu here, because it is quite the menu, but let's start off, because the party is having a hard time here seeming to identify are we better off or not better off here? it does not seem like they really have a very clear message. how does the president going into the next couple of days tell the american people what they need to believe that another four years is going to be better for them? >> well, we don't know that they don't have a clear message. we haven't started the
12:03 pm
convention yet. well, so far the surrogates have not done a good job and one governor saying one thing -- >> well, the question, and people will have their own conclusion. i certainly no one wants to go back to losing 750,000 jobs a month. and that is what we were doing four years ago. this month in january, when the president took office, we lost 750,000 jobs, and the stock market was collapsing and the auto industry was about to go under. and now, those are demonstrative facts that we can make. has, i i think the better question, and i think that the question that the president talked about is what are we going to do for the next four years to make it bet ter? i think that is really where it is. you could go back and forth are we better four years ago, but clearly i don't want to be losing 750,000 jobs a month and i don't want the stock market at 6700 or 6900. >> james, the facts here, ground zero of north carolina and the bible belt and the latest poll from elan university saying that romney is up four points and you have more than 9% unemployment
12:04 pm
in this state, and what does that mean when people here are starting to sway romney's way? >> well, first of all, north carolina is a traditionally a red state. >> okay, but yeah, 2008, he made history here. >> and 2008 we won by 7.5 points and we don't have to win that mu much. 300 and whatever electoral votes, and to win the election, you don't have to carry the state and it is remarkable he is only four points down. north carolina in my definition is not really a swing state. in order to be a swing state, it has to be a state that you have a chance to win, but you could choose it and still win the elections and the republicans can't lose north carolina and still win the election. this is a must win state for them and not a must-win state for president obama. he could easily lose north carolina and still win the election. >> talk about one of the things that the president and the surrogates are saying in sort f of, look, there's a lot of republican obstructionism here
12:05 pm
and people have been fighting me and we have heard it from speaker boehner and newt gingrich from the beginning, but he had two years, and two years where the democrats were in charge in both the house and the senate and could there have been more that he could have done in that two years to argue to the voters to say, look, i'm an effective leader. >> well, he passed a historic bill in the time that i recall the auto industry is up and running that was collapsing. as i recall the banking system hasn't collapsed, and you -- >> but you still haven't answered the question. and james, the question is -- go ahead. >> i am answering the question and talking about the things that he did and i'm saying to you that if we think that we are better off losing 7 50,000 jobs a month and the stock market maybe half of what it is today, and a little under half, i mean, you know, we just can't say accept the fact that somebody says that and not answer the question. and the question is if you want the look at it hence the
12:06 pm
recovery, and we know that historically the countries after a financial crisis take a long time and that is what the president is doing now. >> how important is medicare and that debate? >> well w it is hugely important. think of not just the people on medicare who depend on medicare, but they have families who depend on medicare who wouldn't be able to afford what the illness is. think of all of those things. i think that it is important, and so important that romney is trying to somehow preempt the issue, and it makes sense to him, but i don't think he will do it and you will hear some stuff this week about it, but it is a critical issue in the campaign obviously. >> james, we want to keep you here and go to the vice president joe biden who is talking about that very issue out of detroit. let's listen. >> thank you.
12:07 pm
j. >> james, he just wrapped up. he was talking about medicare and i want to talk about a couple of things, because everyone, and you and i being from new orleans and our families there and hurricane isaac that hit, and people were talking about hurricane bill here as in hurricane bill clinton and what are we expecting to hear from him? >> we are expecting to hear a very good speech. that is what i am expecting. he has been working on it. he is very fired up. he wants to help the president, and get elected again. i'm amused at the sort of republican puffery around bill clinton and it seem ts to me th they actually tried to impeach him, and maybe i'm the only one who tryied to impeach him. the republicans are going to be very, very disappointed in president clinton's speech wednesday night. >> well, back in the election in 2008 and when i covered them campaign clearly a case and certainly in south carolina where there was bad blood
12:08 pm
between president clinton and the candidate barack obama. we have since seen the emergence of these two together on the same stage and same page and people say, well sh, he could upstage the president, but how did that come about and talk about how that emerged? >> well, there was a -- well, the reality is when you are in a primary, it is tough, and it takes a while to get these wounds to heal sometimes, and it has been an evolution here. i think that they have reconciled a lot of things, and you know, after all the president did hire his wife to be the top diplomat in the united states. i think that their relationship has evolved to be a very good relationship and you will see it manifest by the remarks wednesday night. and one of the dangers of saying, oh, there's all of the trouble between bill clinton and barack obama and what have you, you see, i think that when we leave charlotte, i expect and hopefully the people saying bill

12:18 pm
romney, because they are looking for a very strong economic indicator and talking about the friday's jobs report that is come out, and what do we expect? >> well, to put it in context the government jobs report comes out friday and this is the last jobs report coming out before the fed heads into the policy meeting happen iing on septembe 12th and 13th and the expectation is that the employers added 130,000 jobs in august which is good especially since it is the second triple-digit gain in a row, and that is considered good in a normal economy, but it is not a normal economy. we really need more, and more jobs added because the recovery has been bumpy, and the momentum in job creation has not kept up. you look at the second quarter and how it did between april through june and those job additions stalled out. so you are not seeing the momentum of jobs keeping up. even the fed chief ben bernanke said that the labor market is a grave concern to the feds. so even if friday's jobs report

here potentially hurricane bill, as in bill clinton. what is the level of concern here that perhaps he might overshadow the president? >> well, you know this, because you have covered both of them for years, president obama and president clinton, i think that it's fascinating to me that the obama campaign has turned to bill clinton after it was so, so tense and raw between the clinton and obama camps because of obviously his wife and in february very, very tough with you covering bill clinton over and over again and listening to the things that he said. he was accused of being racist which is unheard of for the first black president. look, the whole issue is the economy and the barack obama campaign feels that the last best example of the democrat who did very well with the economy was bill clinton, and it is true, so they want to take people back to the time when a democratic president did bring the economy back. >> dana, good to see you as always, and we go directly to

the national health care reformal pos in massachusetts about 50-50 and they are the same thing. and i think it has almost everything to do with how poorly the affordable health care act has been marketed. people don't understand it. >> does that help or hurt romney, because he says that i'm behind the plan in massachusetts, but he would repeal obama care. well, i, you know, governor romney has always been a gentleman to me, and he is a fine fellow, but you have a sense that if the affordable care act were polling better nationally, he would wrap his arms around it, because the massachusetts model is the model for national health care reform. >> and it is not suggesting that he is being disingenuous, but political. >> well, i believe he has been political about it frankly. we have a record, i think from governor romney's time in office which is not quite consistent with the national storyline he is selling right now, but the one profoundly important thing that he did, suzanne, was health care reform which helped a lot
