network. >> i have experience in health care reform. now the president says i'm the grandfather of obamacare. i don't think he meant it as a compliment, but i'll take it. i've actually been able to put in place a system that fit the needs of the people of my state. >> joining me now is ana navaro. you were at the forum last night. it's interesting to have a chat with you this morning. welcome, ana. >> thank you, carol. good morning. >> being the grandfather of obamacare. he's okay with that. what do you make of that? >> you know, it made me roadway -- raise an eyebrow when he said it and the way he said it. he went back time and time again to his record in massachusetts, whether it was jobs, education or health care. something i haven't seen him do in the past. so it might be that he's now

using more his record as governor, seeing it as something that's useful to go back to, be proud of and own it. i think it's smart, carol. it is his record. it's part of his resume. it's part of what he offers the voters. i think it's smart for him to be using it and owning it. >> what about i'm going to repeal obamacare on day one? >> well, you know, he talks about preferring a solution for the states and the fact that he came up with a solution that was catered toward his state of massachusetts that worked for that one particular state and that states should have the option to do that for themselves individually as opposed to being a feldmderal mandate. >> hopefully, for romney, of course, that will sit well with the voters he was talking to. president obama has a whopping 40-point lead among latino voters. did romney do anything last night that would put a dent in that? >> i don't know if he's going to put a dent in it. i don't think it's a one-night

approach or one-night solution type of thing. he has been doing a lot of things this week. he had the speech in front of the u.s. hispanic chamber of commerce. he had a big interview with telemundo, this candidate forum and more than that, he has begun to spend millions of dollars on spanish ads in hispanic tv. we'll have to see if it works. i hope it's not too little too late. it's very important for the latino community that we not be taken for granted by one party and ignored by the other. the best thing that could happen to us is that both candidates fight hard to earn our votes and to really court us. >> i know you called romney's trip latino paloosa. i like that. and he is sort of going on that, right? >> you're right. >> he did talk about immigration and he seemed to soften his stance. tell me about that. >> he definitely softened his tone. we've now gone from him talking about vetoing the dream act to

some extensions for some young people. he specifically said there will be no round-ups, massive round-ups and deportations. he didn't give many specifics as to what he's going to do with the 11 million here undocumented. he also dodged and weaved on the answer as to what he as going to do with the deferred action that's right now in effect covering dream act kids, the young students that were brought here through no fault of their own. i think those questions will continue dodging him. but his tone, carol, i can tell you, was much different than what i heard during the primary. for me, it's progress. it's what he has to do. he has to moderate his tone. but we also need a good message and we need a good messenger. and mitt romney has got to give it his all with hispanics and try this every single day between now and november. because the margin, the lead that obama has is significant.

so he can't give it up. >> it's more than significant. >> he has to either make a dent in it or die trying. but he can't give it up because it means he can't get to the casablanca. >> ana navaro, thank you so much. president obama, by the way, speaks at the same forum today. and again the folks will be on issues important to latino voters. in all, 20 million hispanic americans are expected to vote in the presidential election. the late ambassador to libya, chris stevens, worried constantly about security threats and said that his name was on an al qaeda hit list. this new information coming from a source close to stevens, who also said the diplomat worried about the growing al qaeda presence in libya. stevens died in an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi along with three other meamericans. homeland official said the attack was not carry ied out by

people simply protesting that anti-islam film. i would say, yes, they were killed in the course of a terrorist attack on our embassy. >> and the presence of rad ical islam in libya has some top senators worried about the united states' relationship with the country. >> libya, very weak, as you know. their borders are porous. but still it is the obligation of the host country to protect our consulates, our embassies and our personnel. it's partially ours but we have to depend on the host country and we have to, then, sort out and rethink what presence we're going to have and what relationship we're going to have with these countries. >> u.s. intelligence officials are still investigating the incident. at least one suspect from the attack in libya has been apprehended. within the hour, the department of justice's inspector general will brief lawmakers about his fast and furious report, atf's weapons

trafficking investigation was connected to the death of u.s. border patrol agent brian terry in 2010. now michael horowitz, the inspector general, will testify before a house oversight committee one day after his 471-page report was released. joe johns is our crime and justice correspondent. he is in washington. morning, joe. >> good morning, carol. this is a very tough report. a lot of tough language in it. across the board, the inspector general saying there was a failure of a number of people to ask questions, to inquiry even when there were red lights all over the place. failure to send information all the way up the chain of command, including even to the attorney general himself. some of this language i will read to you our review of operation fast and furious and related matters revealed a series of misguided strategies, tactics, errors in judgment and management failures that

permeated atf headquarters in the phoenix field division as well as the u.s. attorney's office for the district of arizona. brian terry was the u.s. border patrol agent whose murder in arizona in 2010 really brought concerns about the fast and furious program to a head. two weapons from the operation were found at the scene of terry's murder. family members of terry have spoken out before, but now that the report is out, we're hearing from a family spokesman, robert heyer. >> this whole operation, fast and furious, and the subsequent immediate inquiry into fast and furious based on the atf whistleblowers allegations really, we believe, was a combination of incompetence and arrogance. and, you know, right now we're wondering why -- well,

throughout the government, doj and atf officials, that's how operation fast and furious was implemented. that's how it was allowed to continue. and then the immediate aftermath, especially when the department of justice denied that weapons were ever walked. >> there's been such a political uproar over the fast and furious program. it's kind of interesting now, carol. we're finding that both sides are claiming vindication. both sides saying we were right. and the inspector general's report agrees with them. nonetheless, there's very little that they agree about still. and this is probably going to be a political issue for a long time in washington. >> yeah. there's, what, a house oversight committee hearing on it today, on the inspector general's report. so it goes on. >> yeah. >> 14 people the inspector general said should face punishment. what kind of punishment, do we know? >> what they said was check them

out. we think you need to look into whether they ought to get punishment. they don't recommend the kind of punishment. they leave that up to the justice department. as you know, a couple people, very high ranking, actually were out just about an hour or so or even less. the one retired, one resigned. that would be kenneth nelson of atf and jason weinstein of the justice department. they got some tough words in this report. the rest of this will be aa process. and there may be some calls. i think we're hear iing a littl bit of it on capitol hill already, that maybe some other heads should roll as a result of this report. >> joe johns reporting live for us from washington. look out. a van plows into a police cruiser, putting anner and another person in danger. we'll show you what happened next. car, which hits another car. the officer suffered serious injuries but now has been released from the hospital. the woman, she just suffered some bruises. the van's driver -- guess what? charge charged with dwi. just about half an hour ago we got a new measure of the economy. last week, first time jobless claims fell less than expected. 382,000 americans filed for unemployment benefits. that's only 3,000 fewer than the week before. analysts have predicted a drop of about 10,000. also a security alert about your bank and your money to tell you about. chase's website was slowed by some big glitches for hours and hours yesterday and also last night. if you try to log on right now this is what you'll see, an apology saying we are sorry if you had problems getting to chase.com. this comes one day after the

bank of america site had similar issues. both banks are being warned of a heightened risk of cyber attacks. also knew this morning some insight into what may be behind those glitches, those cyber attacks. reuters now reporting that these shutdowns may have connections to the protest s regarding that anti-islam film that sparked so much protest and violence through the middle east. alison kosik joins me now from the new york stock smang. exchange. so tell us more. >> nothing concrete that this has anything to do with the cyber attack or anti-muslim film. that aside, what happened here is after the bank of america site went down and then chase bank, these groups have said this is us. that's their m.o. both later revealed to be

technical issues. both chase and b of a have been making updates on their sites so it is possible that a simple glitch caused the problem. bank of america came out saying it continuously takes proactive measures. chase didn't go into any details on what may have caused the issues. we did our own sort of unscientific test this morning. both sites seem to be running back to normal. but if you're still having trouble, you can always go to your atm or a physical bank to do your business. if that's too big of a pain, you can do what most of us would probably do and just wait it out. just want to check on stock, lower open. dow will open at about 50 points lower. some disappointing economic reports from around the globe showing slowing manufacturing in china. along with what you mentioned, carol, that smaller than expected drop in weekly jobless claims. carol? >> alison ko sik, thank you.

coming up on 30 minutes past the hour. good morning to you. i'm carol costello. thank you for joining us. we're just a couple of minutes aaway from the opening bell at the new york stock exchange. the market is expected to open lower when trading begins after news of a slowdown in manufacturing in china. back here in the united states, investors will also be reacting to those disappointing weekly initial jobless claims. the final voyage of the space shuttle "endeavour" continues. the shuttle is flying piggyback

from florida to california. today "endeavour" left houston. it will cross texas, new mexico and arizona before finally landing at edwards air force base this afternoon. "endeavour" will reach its final stop, los angeles, tomorrow. on capitol hill, the focus is on fast and furious, as the justice department's inspector general is set to testify to house lawmakers about his report into the weapons trafficking program. the report recommends punishment for 14 people but says there is no evidence attorney general eric holder nor president obama knew about the tactics used in the program. which, as you know, led to the death of a u.s. border patrol agent. so much outrage over that program. remember the goal was to sell guns to trafficker, then trace the guns, intercept them, bust the traffickers and then bust the drug cartels. but the bureau of alcohol, to be alcohol an-- tobacco and firear

lost track of the guns. some of the classified documents in the investigation have not been released. that led house republicans to accuse attorney general eric holder of a cover-up. earlier i talked with congressman jason chaffetz, a republican from utah, and member of the house committee that will grill the inspector general about his report. thanks for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> two top justice department officials are out. one resigned. one retired. 12 others will be disciplined. still many republicans aren't satisfied. why is that? >> well, you have a dead border patrol agent. you have a government that knowingly and willingly gave 2,000 ak-47s to the drug cartels, untold number of crimes that have been committed, hundreds of dead people in mexico. this is hard ly a time for the attorney general to take a vektry lap. we've got to make sure that the

systemic changes need to take place within the department of justice happens so this never, ever happens again. to date, that has not happened. >> do republicans feel that any criminal charges should be filed in this case? >> well, what's really concerning here is that once it was clear that there was gun running going on, they said to the department of justice sent not one, but two letters to the united states congress that they were lies. they were absolutely fabrications. they were long, misleading. eventually the department of justice had to pull those back. so, i think the inspector general actually did a very thorough job, but i think there's still deep questions, particularly about lanny brewer, the head of the criminal division, about what he knew. a simple oh, i'm sorry, i lied to congress, does not necessarily cut it. we took roger clemens, and they prosecuted him for talking about how he might have used steroids. here you're talking about a

border patrol agent who was killed and gun running. >> attorney general was held in contempt of congress, intimating holder was involved in some sort of cover-up. holder says this inspector general's report exonerates him. i just want to read you his quote. he says it's unfortunate that some were so quick to make baseless accusations before they possessed the facts, accusations that caused a great deal of unnecessary harm and confusion. will lawmakers continue to pursue mr. holder? >> it's never been about eric ho holder personally. it has been about the department of justice. and justice in the united states of america. the reality is that there is a duly issued is up to the department of justice to provide us the documentation that they said cleared them. they never provided us that documentation. there were 140,000 documents. we got less than 8,000 of them in. if you're -- i think it really does vindicate what chairman issa and myself have been saying, if we want 100% of the

proof, you need to share the documents with us. people need to be held accountable. to date, nobody has been fired d at the department of justice. they haven't made the structural changes at the senior levels to make sure this doesn't happen again. there's still a long ways to go on this to make sure it never, ever happens again. >> white house is accusing republicans of, quote, wasting time and resources on politically motivated election-year attacks. is that fair? >> no, absolutely it's not fair. brian terry was killed nearly two years ago. this should have been done a long time ago. if they didn't lie to congress, sent us two letters that were totally false, if they had provided the documentation, i think this would have gone away more than a year ago. >> to continue on with this, i think the white house is saying, is a waste of time since the inspector general came out with a 400-plus page report that even you say is pretty thorough. >> it is thorough. but it has a series of recommendations about action that we should take, moving

forward. we still need to see the documentation ourselves. that's the problem. the question in d.c. generates reports but then don't do anything about t of course we've got to do something about what the report says. that would be totally irresponsible to just walkway from it and say, hey, we're done with this. we wash our hands of it. no, we've got to make the changes now. we're not only the oversight committee but the government reform committee and have to work in a bipartisan way to make that happen. >> congressman, thank you so much for being with us. >> thank you. mitt romney started a political firestorm with his 47% comments and he also had some la words for the ladies of "the view." you don't want to make these feisty women angry. that's how many struggle with hunger in america. ♪ but what if there was a simple way to feed those in need? now, there is. shop walmart for select brands' low prices through october 12th and you help secure meals for local families. go to walmart.com/hunger

partnership, that gary passed away in february, and he was a larger than life kind of personality, and just thought that a brain tumor and gl glioblastoma could never happen to him. he taught me so much that even though he's passed away, he's still teaching people, that is if they have the symptoms, to see their physician and hopefully that physician, if there is a difficult diagnosis, they'll be pushed forward to a support network that will help them get through a difficult time. >> so what are the symptoms and how can family members best support a loved one who is diagnosed with a brain tumor? >> there's a lot of different symptoms. for gary, it was a fall that really alerted him. there's memory loss. there's maybe head aches. all of those things, of course, might not mean that there's a brain tumor, but if any of those things are things that are never happened in the past, i think it's time probably for you to

just go see a physician, try to really get some help. the moments that matter really mean that you go and find out what the diagnosis is and if it's a difficult one, the moments that matter, you'll really have some time to spend with your family. >> before i let you go, we have to talk baseball. disclosure, i'm a tigers fan. i want to talk about miguel cabrera. he's now one home run away from the top of all three a.l. batting categories. so the question is, that it's out there, can he be the first triple crown winner since 1967 and not be the mvp? >> well, it's interesting. '67, of course, was karl yastrzemski and i'm from boston. i think miguel cabrera is the best hitter in baseball. the season he's having is amazing. his main competition is mike trout from the angels, and both of the teams are not in the playoffs yet. so there's a ways to go for miguel.

"newsroom" starts now. good morning, thank you so much for joining us this morning. we begin with mitt romney, reaching out to latino voters and trying to get past those secretly recorded comments. romney dismissing 47% of

americans as being dependent on government handouts. romney is now pitching new numbers. listen to his appearance last night on univision, the spanish language network. >> this is the campaign about the 100%. and over the last several years, you've seen greater and greater devi divisiveness in this country. you've seen us pull apart and politics has driven us apart in some respects. so my campaign is about the 100% in america. and i'm concerned about them. >> rafael romo is cnn's senior latin american affairs editor. romney has been on sort of a tear, appearing before many different latino groups can. he make up what he needs to, though? i mean, president obama leads latinos by, what, 68%? >> 66%, 67%. that's the percentage that went into 2008. some of the comments that romney

made during the primary season, regarding, for example, self-deportation, which essentially means that the life becomes so miserable for latino immigrants in the united states that they have no other option but to go back to their country. those are the comments he made in the primary season and alienated a large number of latino voters. but last night at the forum hosted by univision, the number one spanish language tv network in the united states, he had a golden opportunity to address those concerns, and i'm not sure that he did it. let's listen to how he answered the question as to what are you going to do with 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country. >> we're not going to round up people around the country and deport them. i said during my primary campaign time and again, we're not going to round up 12 million people, that includes the kids and the parents and have everyone deported. our system isn't to deport people. we need to provide a long-term solution. i described the fact that i

would be in support of a program that said that people who served in our military could be permanent residents of the united states. >> another golden opportunity that he missed was he failed to address the question as to what is he going to do with the children of immigrants, the young children of immigrants who are here in this country and who are going to be -- their deportations are going to be deferred on the obama program. he didn't answer the question. that would have scored him some points in this category. as you know, his father george was born in mexico in the state of chihuahua in the last century and he migrated to the united states when he was 5 or 6. and so a funny moment during the forum, one of the anchors asked him whether he considers himself latino by virtue of his father being born in mexico and this is what he answered. >> are you sure you're not hispanic? >> i think for political purposes, that might have helped

me here at the university of miami today, but truth is, as you know, my dad was born of american parents living in mexico. but he came back to this country at age 5 or 6 and was helped to get on his feet and recognize this was the land of opportunity. >> this is a question we've been talking about in the hispanic community. some advertising experts have told me that he probably should have taken advantage of the fact that his father was born in mexico. even though he's not ethnically mexican. but then again, you're walk a very fine line. he could have alienated the conservative base with the republican party and he really needs that for the election. >> it seemed like he repeated the joke that he said in those secretly recorded tapes, and the audience didn't really react, so maybe that doesn't matter after all. at least that part is good for romney. >> in theory, if he wanted to ever do that, he could actually apply for a mexican passport because his father being born in mexico could have been a mexican national.

>> would have been nice if he could have take than out of his pocket. rafael romo, thanks so much. >> thank you. let's take a look at what's at stake here. more than 50 million latinos in the united states. that comes to about one in every six americans. in the 2008 presidential race, two of every three latino voters backed obama. that's according to a cnn national exit poll. 31% voted his republican rival senator john mccain. here are the states with the highest population of hispanic voters. new mexico is tops with nearly 39%. texas and california are not far behind with 30% and 27% respectively. president obama speaks at the same univision forum today, and again, the focus will be on the issues important to latino voters. in all, 20 million hispanic americans are expected to vote in the presidential election. so let's look ahead with dan lothian. what is the president going to do to hang on to hispanic votes? does he need to do thinking

snig. >> -- does he need to do anything? >> reporter: he's still pushing very hard. you see the president first of all running spanish language ads in key battleground states, heavy hispanic populations like florida, colorado, and nevada, and in these ads touting his accomplishments. this one that you're looking at right there talking about how president obama appointed the first hispanic to the supreme court. the president pushing very hard. and has spent heavily on these ads, which tracks ad spending, the president's campaign has spent more than $5.1 million on these spanish language ads. mitt romney, who's also trying to get a piece of the hispanic vote, has spent himself $3.1 million on these hispanic ads. of course, you know, you talked a little bit about the polling, the exit polling from 2008. so that's very clear. and what we're seeing now in the most recent gallup polls, the

president is pretty much mirroring what he got in 2008. the president leading mitt romney 66% to 26%. but again, both campaigns fighting very hard for the hispanic vote, carol. >> dan lothian, reporting live from the white house. the late ambassador to libya chris stevens worried constantly about terrorist threats. he worried about the growing al qaeda presence in libya. as you know, stevens died in an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi last week along with three other americans. during a senate homeland security hearing, a counterterrorism official said the attack was not carried out by people simply protesting an anti-islam film. >> i would say yes, they were killed in the course of a terrorist attack on our embassy. >> and the presence of radical islam has some top senators worried about the united states' relationship with that country.

>> libya is very weak. as you know, their borders are forests. there's radical islamist elements throughout the country. but still, it is the obligation of the host country to protect our consulates, our embassies and our personnel. and it's partially ours, but we have to depend on the host country and we have to then sort out and rethink what presence we're going to have and what relationship we're going to have with these countries. >> u.s. intelligence officials are still investigating the incident. at least one suspect from the attack in libya is in custody. and we're finding out that one of the actresses that appeared in that anti-islam film that spark sod much violence in the middle east is now suing the film's producer. cindy lee garcia is also naming youtube and google for not removing the video. she says she's a victim of fraud, invasion of privacy and has received death threats since the film gained worldwide attention. miguel marquez is at the los angeles superior courthouse to tell us more.

hi, miguel. >> hello there. just stole all of my thunder. cindy garcia will be here very bright and early in the morning in los angeles. we spoke to her last week. at the time that we spoke to her, she wasn't aware whether or not her voice had been dubbed over. now in this lawsuit, she says it hasn't. she was playing a mother in that film. but when she saw the part that she played, just want to read you this one bit of the lawsuit, instead, the defendant made an anti-islamic propaganda film in which the plaintiff is falsely made to have accused to be the founder of islamic religion being a sexual deviant and child molester. she says she can't see her grandchildren now, she can't go to work, she's received death threats and running for life. she also said she's moved out of her house now because she's gotten so inundated with all of

this. they want to go right into the judge's office and ask him to order google and youtube to take that video down. they say they have refused to do it. but this obviously becomes a first amendment issue. her lawyers say they're not going after the first amendment. they just want her privacy protected. but at the moment, it is going to be a massive struggle. this is also in l.a. superior court. it's difficult to imagine a superior court judge here in l.a. will be able to take that video down worldwide. the companies say they've already looked at that video and unfortunately it meets their standard for videos online. >> interesting. let's talk about the film maker now, because we understand he's getting lawyered up. do we expect a hearing on his probation, probation that's based on nothing connected to the film? >> yeah, it is nothing connected to the film. this is probation -- he's on supervised release if a 2010 conviction for fraud.

and we expect that there will be a probation hearing at some point because of a couple of points. he has 26 different conditions in his probation order that he has to fulfill. one is he can't have any device or access to internet without his probation officer's okay. he can't use any other names than his true legal name, and it's not entirely clear whether it's a name that his probation officer allowed him to use. his real legal name is nakoula basseley nakoula. he is getting lawyered up at the moment. i think that process is almost done. once he does, my guess is we will see action in the federal courts over his probation fairly soon. carol? >> miguel marquez reporting live from los angeles. also happening this hour, house oversight committee members resuming their hearing. the department of justice's inspector general is among those

testifying. the report targets 14 federal officials for possible punishment, but the report also takes pressure off of eric holder saying he was not informed of the operation in a timely manner. fast and furious allowed weapons to be taken across the border in order to trace them to drug cartels but those weapons wound up at crime scenes and also at the site of u.s. border patrol agent brian terry's murder. terry's cousin spoke on cnn's "early stock." >> we're disappointed at the tone of that statement by the attorney general. nobody should be doing a victory dance right now. anything less than a sober reflection of the mistakes made and the negligence by many officials within the department of justice and atf, anything less than that is a disservice to brian's sacrifice. >> the botched operation led house republicans to accuse the obama administration of a cover-up and that resulted in a

house vote to cite holder for contempt. mortgage rates are back to historic lows. this comes after the federal reserve's decision last week to keep interest rates low in an effort to stimulate the economy. an average 30-year fixed mortgage matched its all-time record of just 3.49%. while the average 15-year fixed rate hit a new all-time low of -- get this, 2.77%. wow. one controversial part of president obama's health care law would face many americans without health insurance to pay penalties. now it's estimated that two million more people than previously thought may face those penalties. now a breakdown of the numbers. >> reporter: the congressional budget office and joint committee on tacksays, they initially estimated that in 2016, four million americans would pay a penl for not having health care, but that number has

gone way up. a revised number has it close to six million. we can blame it on a higher economy, really means fewer people will be able to afford medical insurance. presumably, because either they don't have a job and aren't getting it through their employer, or lower wages mean they can't afford insurance on their own. so there's also been some legislative changes since the cbo did the initial estimate, and it is a result of the actual supreme court decision. it gives states the option to expand medicaid coverage or not. so what type of figures are we talking about for people paying? it goes up every year. starts in 2014. so by 2016, we're looking at a penalty of about $2,085 per family, or two and a half% of income, whichever is the greater there. for an individual, penalty will be $695. some big numbers there. >> you're right about that. thanks so much. the world may be change its

last night. colorado movie theater shooting suspect is back in court this morning. prosecutors want to add ten new charges to the 142 that james holmes already faces. lawyers will likely argue whether a notebook holmes allegedly mailed to his psychiatrist before the shooting can be entered at trial. 12 people killed, 58 wounded in that attack. in "money news," america's largest bank will no longer be bank of america. that's according to "the wall street journal," which reports that bank of america will cut another 16,000 jobs by the end of the year. another 200 branches will also close. jp morgan chase, citigroup, and wells fargo would all be bigger. turning now to sports, where the nhl lockout has claimed its first games. the national league says all preseason games are cancelled. the league and his players still trying to work out a new labor agreement. talk about a close call. watch this. police officers in lubbock,

texas, were responding to a minor accident. that's when that van loses control, and then hits the officer, who pushed the other accident victim out of the way. the officer had minor injuries, but will be okay. the driver of the van faces dwi charges. mitt romney appeared at a univision forum last night in miami. forget the 47%. last night, it was all about the 100%.

we are approaching 30 minutes past the hour. good morning, i'm carol costello. checking our top stories, chris stevens worried constantly about security threats. said that his name was on an al qaeda hit list. new information coming from a source close to stevens who also said the diplomat worried about the growing al qaeda presence in libya. stevens died in an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi last week along with three other

americans. on capitol hill, the focus is on fast and furious, the justice department's inspector general is set to testify about his report into the weapons trafficking program. that report recommends punishment for 14 people, but since there is absolutely no evidence, attorney general eric obama knew about the tactics of that program. there's a new sign the economy has changed people's behavior for the better. compared to last year, there were 1.4 million fewer people in the lowest credit scoring range. experts say many people who had high debt loads and poor credit before the recession have since cut down on spending and their credit is actually better. mitt romney said hello to the 100% last night at a univision forum in miami. governor romney was reaching out to latino voters, and he didn't mention the 47%.

instead, saying that his concern was "all about the 100%." >> this is a campaign about the 100%. and over the last several years, you've seen greater and greater divisiveness in this country. we had hoped to come back together, but instead you've seen us pull apart and politics has driven us apart in some respects. so my campaign is about the 100% in america. and i'm concerned about them. >> he's not a divider, he's a uniter. that's what he's saying. joining me now from new york, will cane who leans right, and democratic strategist robert zimmerman. welcome to both of you. >> good to be with you, good morning. >> so will, effective line? >> yeah. well, it's the right line, right? i hope the campaign is about 100% because the ideology, conservatism would be 100%. we as conservatives believe that our economic philosophy is one that not just benefits the richest among us, but benefits

the poorest among us as well. milton freeman said it best there is no system that has pulled more people out of poverty than the free market system. and that is the one that you would hope mitt romney would be following. >> the problem, will, is that it's a bit hard to seau represent 100% when you've already shown disdain for 47% of the population, including our service men and women, our senior self-defense on social security and our students. he says nothing about the 3,000 americans who make over $2 million every year and don't pay federal income taxes because of capital gains or because of carried interests. so he has really two sets of america. he looks at america in a very divisive way and speaks up for one segment but not the 47%. >> there is a gallup poll that came out, i think it was 29% of

people said they're less likely to vote for governor romney after those comments. that's not the right poll. we'll take that one down. so it is having an effect. so how many times does he need to say this 100% line to cancel out that 47% thing? >> well, it's a little rich to hear robert and any democrat talk about the politics of divisiveness. it's a little rich to hear that coming from a campaign on the left that talks about dividing americans based upon age, gender, race, sexuality, no matter what. that's the politics on the left. >> why is it rich, will? >> telling each individual group how your policies are going to be catered to them in some way that's going to make their lives, but not all americans' lives, better. the point i was making earlier and the point that's important here is that conservatism, especially on the economic front, is one that applies to 100% of americans. see, what i'm not doing right now is i'm not defending the 47% remark. because that was a mistake.

it's a mistake -- >> isn't a political theory class, will. it's an election. we have to make a choice. we understand what mitt romney and the right wing fringe that he advocates for represents. that is an america where if you're making over $2 million a year, you get a pass on criticism about not paying federal taxes. >> here's the thing, robert -- i've got to respond to that. this is a political theory, he says. that comment right there is indicative of the problem of our political discourse. what mitt romney should stand for, and isle constantly trying to ascertain whether or not he does, is the political theory that i'm talking about, the one that benefits everyone. what's not helpful is to reduce that comment to a political talking point because hey, look, we're in an election season. this is politics. people do need to make a choice, robert, but they need to make it based upon what we really know these guys stand for, not how we can spin a comment. >> let's talk about the debates because the debates are coming up and they're critical for mitt

romney right now. mitt romney does a pretty good job in the debate, robert. won't these comments be a distant memory in voters' minds? >> you make a very good point. i've been physically president at most every presidential debate since 2000. i can tell you presidential debates are driven by perception more than by the reality on the stage. george w. bush famously said if i don't fall off the stage, i'm a winner. he actually was able to win the buzz from that, win the perception, even though he didn't carry himself well in the debates. i think ultimately the debates are really defining. they will determine the outcome. the problem is mitt romney has put all his markers on the first presidential debate. it's very hard to explain away a lot of his rhetoric. >> two men have very different theories about what will fix our economy. that's sure to come out in the debate and they'll have an

tomorrow's going to be another big day for apple. the iphone 5 goes on sale in stores. nationwide, there are lines already forming outside of apple stores. some people have been in line for almost a week now. apple even says it had more than two million preorders for its newest smart phone in just the first 24 hours. so why are some customers not so excited about the latest igadget? mario armstrong is an hln contributor, an expert in all these things. he joins us live now. good morning, mario. >> good morning. how are you? >> i'm good. so where is the extreme over-the-top love for the iphone this time? >> what do you mean?

two million preorders that. seems pretty extreme to me. >> it is, i'll admit it. but some people are still complaining about the new model. >> you're absolutely right. there have been some complaints about this. they came out with the phone early 2000s and it hasn't really had any change in its actual shape since then. so this is the first time that you're actually getting a different sized iphone. it's going to be thinner, it's going to be lighter. it's a tad bit longer. it has something that's changed. in order to make the phone th g thinner, it had to change the connection port. that means all of the older accessories and the chargers that you used to have no longer will work with the new iphone 5 unless you pay for a $29 adapter and that has a lot of people a little upset about that particular change. >> yeah, because it's not exactly cheap to buy one of those things. >> no, and you have these docks and all these other things that your phone would fit into, and the question now becomes with an

adapter connected to the new phone, will it fit? will it not fit? what about all those hotel rooms? are alarm clocks obsolete now? your car charger. a lot of those things seem to have a little bit of frustration. apple and others say look, we're going wireless. you take your speakerphone and go bluetooth so you don't really even need those cables. but if you want the old stuff to work, you need those adapters. that's got a little frustration for folks. >> yeah. that's a lot of money. let's talk about size some more, because you know size matters. when it comes to mobile phone screens, that's what i'm talking about, some critics think the iphone 5's bigger screen isn't big enough. >> you're talking now the iphone 5 has a four-inch screen. up until now, it was 3.5 inches. so it's still a significant increase in the size of the screen that you're going to see. and it's going to look great when you're looking at that hd video. you're not going to have all that letter boxing going on. it's going to look good. but the thing is samsung galaxy,
