"ignore them and get over it." welcome, william. it is not just a democracy or

well, the most violent of the anti-american protests was in bangladesh where several people were arrested, but the biggest crowd was in lebanon where the hezbollah members were the brightest. and now the creator of the film is in hiding and why? because he has a $1 million bounty on him and encouraging that the taliban or al qaeda or anybody who can to kill the filmmaker. the mere mention of him can incite violence and destruction and death. and why? we are joined by a professor of policy and understand iing.

and for a country who prides itself on freedom of speech, why is mohammed off limit to people here in america? >> i don't think that mohammed is off limits, but we don't know much about who he is, is the problem. people who speak on behalf of islam and people who say they are experts are not able to communicate to muslims and what he means to muslims. so we don't have a conversation about islam that we deserve, so you get extremist voices from each sides filling in the gap leaving the vast majority of muslims and americans in the dark. >> but regardless of the civil riselized conversation here on television tonight, i won't stop what happened and it has not stopped the protests. >> well, i think that we have to be fair when we look at the protests what is happening m. the overwhelming majority of the muslims from grass roots to the religious leader and the government leaders have

condemned the violent protests. if you look at the people protest i protesting and a smaller percentage of them are protesting violently and even people with extremist opinions are pushing the protests, the protest are not about prophet mohammed, but they have to do with american politics and with humiliation and not treated as dignity and not part of society to be able to politically participate. so there are a lot of feelings of ail yep nation, and this movie is more for people to come on to the street s s to vent th feelings and these gestures are pushed by extremist views and political leaders to push their own cause forward. >> i hear what you are saying, but as most of us look around the world and especially in the western culture, we don't see many people coming forward who are secular muslims or people who are, you know, mar ore in t middle for a lack of better words, but not radical islamists who can come forward to denounce

these activities. we see the people on the streets and hear the words that you say it is a handful and not a lot of people, but most people don't believe it, because we don't see the other side or a counter weight that is as big or that can counter that protests. >> well, the counter weight is there, but we are not paying attention. we tend to show the things that feed into the narrative of what we expect the muslim world to be. pakistan is a people of 20 million people and a few thousand people is not a lot of people. and the same in benghazi which is a tiny population of libya, and they have come out against the violence and the killing of the ambassador. they have called for an end to it. but it is what we are paying attention to it and we are

focusing on the things that produce the most images on tv. >> i want to say this from roger cohen who writes, the muslim world cannot have it both ways and place islam at the center of political life and in extreme cases political violence while at the same time declaring that the religion is off limits to contestation and ridicule. is there a belief in the muslim world that you can have it both ways that the prophet mohammed or cannot in any way be depicted at all, it is a sense that the muslim world wants it both ways? >> i don't think that roger cohen is being fair and i don't think that he is being accurate. prophet mohammed is a deeply contested figure. most of the divisions between the sunnis and shias for example have to do with interpreting the prophet mohammed's legacy. it is offensive and not about meaningful criticism and debate, by it is about mockery and humiliati

humiliation, and for a small percentage of muslims, and it is a small percentage, that mockery is not acceptable for what their countries have received. so the storming of the egyptian embassy, it is about what they perceive american foreign policy is or about the prophet mohammed. i believe there needs to be a more honest conversation. maybe across the world there needs to be a et bbetter understanding, and maybe is the beginning of that. >> is there any way to depict prophet mohammed, in a caricature or in any way? >> well, i belief in the freedom of speech and as long as someone is not inciting violence directly, somebody can make whatever points they want to make, but from a religious or moral point, depictions of religious figures like john the baptist or jesus or the prophet

mohammed does not mean i'm going out into the streets. i will write a letter and say, we have a agreement to disagree. a majority of the muslims are not willing to get on the streets so protest peacefully or the smaller minority to protest violently. it is a radical fringe. >> do you believe that most muslims worldwide believe it is okay to depict the prophet mohammed? >> i don't think they agree with the ability to depict him, but at loft the shia muslims don't have the same taboo around depicting the prophet mohammed in images and there are also movies made about the prophet's life and sacred islamic figures so this has more the do with the political differences and the dem k demock ratization and opening it up for the first time to see

okay. mitt romney is taking heat not just from the democrats and president obama, but he is getting criticism from the republicans, too. conservative columnist peggy noonnan called the romney campaign a rolling calamity, and bill kristol has said some tough things, too, and two republican heavyweights who may not be wanting to say things out loud, but we know one who is. we have anna navarro who is

right after 9/1 19/11 where thes a gallup poll where there was 54% of muslims who believe there was no justification for 9/11 and the rest were nebulous and no comment and no feeling about it and then 7% said, yes, absolute justification. so that is a huge number of 1 bill yion people who believe the is justification for that type of action, and that is what bill maher is talking about. >> well, if you want to say, and i'm not sure what the number is and that was right after 9/11, but a few of the muslims who are radical and violent and vie haddists, maybe that is accurate, but the rest of us don't have to be defined by that and nor should we be. my fellow americans who are progressive have a different opinion when they get to the muslims an liberals and that we are all bad and secretly trying the do something and not as patriotic as the fellow
