to put a stop to it. >> know that we are coming for you. it is only a matter of time. >> the person doing it, still out there. so far no arrests. the numbers are climbing higher in the deadly fungal meningitis outbreak, according to data released by the cdc on saturday, 23 deaths are now tied to the outbreak. there are 284 total new cases, including three joint infections. most patients got sick after being given contaminated steroid injections used for back and neck pain. the white house is denying a report that iran has agreed to one-on-one talking over its nuclear program. the new york times reported the agreement on the negotiations. but a spokesperson for the national council said that report is not true. he added the u.s. still hopes to find a diplomatic solution. an attempt to at least temporarily stop the bloodshed in syria is being ignored.

activists say homes -- homes and other cities came under fire today. more than 200 were killed nationwide. the continued reports came after the envoy was there regarding a truce for next monday's holiday. and bodies were discovered in a mass grave there. and here is what we are talking about tonight. he conquered the tour de france, and won hearts and money. now, some big donations, the donors want the money back, we asked them why. from cheating to win, to cheating in the bedroom. a growing number of people say it is okay and even helps marriages. would you allow your better half to sleep with somebody else? election day is almost here, people. and some of you still can't make up your mind. are you undecided or just

in austin, lance armstrong spoke in public for the first time it went down, and he got a bit emotional, listen. >> this mission is bigger than me, it is bigger than any individual. there is 28 million people around the world living with this disease. martin luther king jr. said is once, he said we must accept disappointment, but never lose hope. >> there he is on the screen, before i tell the audience who you are, i want your reaction to lance armstrong, what he just said is, just quoting martin luther king jr. about not losing infinite hope, what do you think? >> i think it is a great quote. but the thing is, he is still standing there as the one guy talking to everybody. and for me, that -- that is a conflict. >> yeah. >> a message to me. >> i want to tell people who you

are, michael birdsong, you are a livestrong volunteer from way back, way back, your wife is a cancer survivor, you raised a lot of money, you helped, things have changed now. so where do you stand now with the livestrong foundation? >> i had not worked with them at all since 2010. my official role with them ended at the end of 2008, in 2009 and 2010, i helped a friend out who was doing a charity ride. i was her web master, so i was kind of like one degree removed. but it was more -- i was helping her. i really -- the livestrong part didn't really play into it. so 2008 is when i stopped. >> you said you want your money back, why? >> the livestrong, and mr. armstrong are tied at the hip. there is no way of really separating either of them.

several athletes out there have foundations. the cyclist, tyler hamilton had one, i believe it dealt with ms. no one ever really heard about that. tyler didn't win, you know, the tour de france. the results that mr. armstrong had in the tour de france directly benefitted the building of the lance armstrong foundation, and then they re-branded it as livestrong. and he cheated, and cheated, you know, beyond many people's believes or imagination for those results in the tour de france, so the whole thing is built on a lie. >> uh-huh. >> and that is wrong. >> you have used words -- i have heard you say that you feel that you were betrayed, hoodwinked and ripped off. but despite the scandal, mr. birdsong, there are plenty of

people who are still standing by lance armstrong and his charity. listen, and then you and i will talk about it. >> there are 28 million cancer survivors around the world today, those numbers have increased since livestrong has been around. and they really provide a lot of support that was never there before. >> no, you know, i think it is an organization that was developed by somebody who has been an enormous inspiration to so many, and to myself. >> and regardless of what you may say about anything else, he has done more to motivate and inspire, just regular people, and also all of those survivors than anybody else. >> okay, i mentioned, you said you felt hoodwinked, or ripped off. do you think all of those people were ripped off, like you think you were? >> let me state that i don't think that livestrong has not helped people. i know it has, but you know, how did we get to this point? how did all of this get created,

i don't see people letting bernie madoff off the hook for all he did, i believe he did many things for philanthropy, too, i think it is all based on a lie. if other people want, are happy to even donate more money to livestrong, you know, more power to you. you believe in something, you think you're doing something good. i can't say anything bad about it. i think i'm speaking for myself here, and my wife, you know, about how we feel about all of this. because we were so dedicated. we were very much like some of those people you interviewed. i defended lance to -- you know, people would say he was cheating. and i would flat out tell people, well, if he did that, this hall would fall apart. i mean, he is smarter than that. he is not going to build all of this on a lie, at least that is what i thought. >> well, michael birdsong, thank

you, your wife is doing better, we hope. >> oh, yes, she -- >> we appreciate you coming on cnn, and telling, giving your feelings. thank you very much. >> thank you, sir, i appreciate it. okay, so just a few development here, just within the last couple of minutes we were told that livestrong wanted to respond to our story tonight. we have reached out to them early until the week, but now we're hearing they want to respond. now i hear that on the phone is kathy mclane, what do you want to express? >> we want to express our deepest gratitude from all the donors, helping the cancer survivors throughout the united states. as one of the most highly related cancer nonprofit in the united states. we just want to make sure that people know the funds that they contribute go to serve the people and families struggling with the financial or emotional

or practical challenges that always accompany cancer. >> would you be open to giving people back the money who want it. most people wouldn't want their money back, probably thinking it is going to a good cause, even he said that, speaking for himself. would you be open to do that? or is that out of the question? >> well, i tell you what i heard very loud and clear from mr. birdsong is he felt a sense of disappointment. and i would just want to assure anybody who donated to livestrong, they were not supporting one person, one athlete or a celebrity. they were supporting, you know, millions of people throughout the united states who were struggling with cancer. and that is exactly what their funds were used to support. >> uh-huh, so i take that as a no? >> well, certainly , we want to hear from the donors, and if

they have concerns we want to know about that. but ultimately the funds that livestrong has raised and the hard-earned dollars that the donors have contributed, we're very, very grateful for. and they have gone to serve people struggling with financial problems as a result of cancer. and i find it hard to believe that anybody would want to ask for their money back for dollars that contributed to such an amazing and noble cause. >> but you certainly understand the concern, which i think you said earlier in this interview. it has been -- as i said at the top of this show, it has been a very bad couple of weeks for lance armstrong. and i'm sure for the foundation, as well. he spoke for the first time last night in austin, texas, and we played some of that. what did the last couple -- the last couple of weeks, how has it been for the organization? >> well, thank you for asking, i think -- obviously it has been a

tumultuous time, and certainly, we're trying to stay as focused as we possibly can, providing a high level of service for people turning to us with a diagnosis, who need help getting access to a clinical trial, getting help to cover treatment. that is what we show up to work for every single day. and that is exactly what we are putting the emphasis on. >> what i'm getting at, i think the organization has seen better times. i am sure the morale is not the same as it has been, obviously, you don't work for an organization like this and not want to help people. but i'm sure that morale has been better, and i am sure that there is a concern whether or not the organization can remain, can sustain. >> well, you make a good point. i mean, there is no arguing that you know, these have been tough and emotional times, certainly for the team who works at livestrong, these are all people who devoted their careers to the service of others. and that is a beautiful thing. i think the organization is doing exactly what it needs to

do, to ensure that we are continuing to provide the high level of service, making a swift transition to the new chairman of the board. who will assume oversight of our mission and make sure we're heading in the right direction to serve more people. >> listen, i have to run, ms. mclane, have you spoken to lance armstrong? >> well, he has spoken to the team throughout the week. he wanted to make sure that everybody he worked with throughout the time as the chairman, knew that he did that to help the organization from getting any damage that is spilling over from sort of the sporting world and the controversy coming out. >> what would you say to him if you could speak to him? >> i would say thank you for 15 years of service to the cancer survivors, and thank you for giving all the 100 employees at the armstrong foundation to engage in a very, very noble mission. >> thank you, kathy mclane, vice

8-ten% say they're uncommitted, means they have a preference, but that would change. >> before you get our vote, you're going to have to answer some questions. questions like? >> when is the election? >> how soon do we have to decide? >> what are the names of the two people running. and be specific. >> what is the president right now? is he or she running? because if so -- >> all right, so michael jones may not be laughing at that, because he is still undecided. but our cnn contributors made up their minds a long time ago, one on the left, one on the right. probably laughing at the bit. so mr. jones, you voted for mr. barack obama last time, i have to ask you why you have not been able to make up your mind this time. >> it is a host of things going on. could be make a perception

problem. from hearing him speak and things going on around you, the reality that things may be getting better. but from my perspective, perception, things are not getting better. there are a lot of people out here hurting. there are people having to decide to gas their car up, or provide their family with adequate meal. there are buildings in my neighborhood, that they tried having a business, and they're now closed down. that is very discouraging, and the homes, boarded up, for sale, foreclosure. >> listen, i don't think people would disagree with you, hard times, as you said, getting better, but people are still in hard times. but listen, the choices are quite clear, it is simple, these are things people care about when picking a candidate. economic issues, domestic issues, and foreign policy, a low priority, 4%, so let's talk about the economy, 59% of people care about, big priority, number

one priority, unemployment, here is where the candidates stand. >> unemployment rate was 7.8% when he took office. it is 7.8% now, but if you calculated that unemployment rate, taking back the people that dropped out of the work force it would be 10.7%, we have not made the progress we need to make to put people back to work. >> the most important thing we can do is make sure we create jobs in this country. but not just jobs, good paying jobs, ones that can support a family. and what i want to do is build on the 5 million jobs that we created in the past months, in the private sector alone. >> okay, so either you agree with the president who says he needs time to make his plans work. or you agree with mitt romney, it is simple. that is not going to change between now and the election, then what gives here? >> well, you know what? at least when i spoke with the president the other day, he was willing to say that there was some shortcomings, in the four

years that he has served. but he pointed out some interesting points, too. the car industry. the death of osama bin laden. i worked the day of 911, i saw people coming up the street devastated by that thing. and, you know, i think there -- i'm leaning towards -- with the president. because romney describes his five-point plan, but i don't see any kind of substance to it. and it seems to be, whatever negative about the president, he just harps on it, i don't see an agenda moving forward. >> all right, let's talk about it. we know how they stand on taxes. we know about that. we've seen there is a clear difference there, one is middle class, one upper class that doesn't want to get rid of the bush tax cuts, the other wants to get rid of the taxes, gun control, gay marriage, both men are pretty similar on health care for obvious reasons, although romney has waffled on

that. education, despite what you hear, they're the same on gun control. neither will touch it because of the gun lobby, and on abortion and gay marriage, they're the exact opposite of each other. so lz, what is so hard, do you think for undecided voters to make their mind over it? >> i think it is the apathy that they feel towards the president. you're right, i mean, it can't be clearer in terms of the two men being different. if you're undecided at this point, the only thing i can think of is that you're waiting for the october jobs report just to see one last time if we truly are heading in the right direction. but you remember a few months ago when we were trying to figure out if we were better off today than four years ago, i looked at things like the jobs report numbers and how at this time four years ago, we had lost 500,000 jobs in this country. and now, we have created more than 100,000 jobs. >> okay. >> now, that may not sound like

a lot, but that is a huge swring. and so when you look at that, i think it is pretty clear. >> so anna, the reason i talked about, the issues, the economy, taxes, education, on and on, because i'm trying to actually help these people, you know, the people who are undecided or committed make a choice here. because it seems to be pretty clear to most americans. why do you think people are still undecided? >> you know, first of all i can't tell you how happy i am to meet mr. jones, because i was beginning to think that these undecided voters were like big foot, they existed, a myth in the wilderness, there was no scientific evidence of. because i have been searching high and low for undecided voters and i really can't find any. i can't tell you why they haven't decided. they may be waiting for an october surprise, maybe a november surprise, maybe they want to see another debate. you know what? the truth is maybe they don't
