loved ones. that's what we're watching for here. and we're going totally unscripted with this. >> can you guys want to step in? >> sure. >> come on in. >> hi there, sweetie. >> identify yourselves if you would be so kind. >> betty, this is my daughter melissa mcdavid and her daughter cameron mcdavid. we have our husbands and ryan and madeleine and we went on a cruise. my son-in-law andy. >> three generations of family all here? >> yep. we came to celebrate her 40th birthday. >> welcome back. >> not the birthday you expected. >> it's all right. >> so what was it like? >> it made you appreciate hot water, flushing toilets. electricity. we weren't prepared for it. >> you came through it as a family. >> we did. we were all together. that was what was the most important and just glad to be

arria ali alive. >> were you worried at any point it might not end this way? >> yes, the first night was pretty rough because we were tilting very badly. >> the ship was listing, right? >> very badly. i was having trouble staying on the bed. and one of the items on the counter fell off. you kind of have moments where you think titanic when the things start rolling off the counter. it was a bit scary. we did a lot of praying. >> what was it like for you guys? >> for me, it was really scary because it's never happened to me and it's my first cruise and i didn't know what to do. so the bed was tilting, and i didn't know what to do. it was really confuse. >> it was hard to sleep into no air conditioning. it was hot. >> dark. >> very dark. >> it's good to have your mom and your grand mom and everybody with you so you were safe. >> yes, ma'am. >> so are you going to go on a

cruise again? >> i actually have one booked in june to alaska. and i definitely have my list of things i'm going to take. >> travel gear. >> that list has changed. >> we were talking to someone earlier who said thank goodness this didn't happen to me in alaska because it would be so cold. you're going to go there. you'll make sure you bring the right clothes. >> take the right things. you know, it was very memorable. it makes you appreciate the little things in life. >> the big things. >> time with your family perhaps that you didn't expect. >> right. >> cell phone service. >> no cell phone service. >> this begs the question when you're cut off like this when children don't have ways to entertain themselves, how did you pass the time? >> i had packed some cards. played cards. >> we played cards with friends. >> the kids had scavenger hunts on the ship. you used the daylight during the day to see. it gotda, okay, bedtime. come in.

don't run around the ship. you can't see. >> go back to the stone ages. buses coming behind us right now. cameron's waving. these are people, of course, we've been seeing several of these buses go by on the way to new orleans and galveston. some people have been very frustrated and angry at carnival. are you? are you going to sue them or no? >> i feel like they didn't tell us -- they didn't start off right. they didn't make the right decisions in the beginning. that's just my personal. >> pam:. the tugboats should have been ordered immediately. ordered immediately. >> yeah, they said they didn't call for help because no one was in danger of like die. >> we could see smoke. have i pictures of smoke coming out the top during the fire, and we knew -- you could smell it. people on the lower decks, it was all in the halls. it wasn't a small fire as we were led to believe. we were also told that it was. >> it was not. >> do you think they kept you informed? did you feel that you were constantly given the right

information? >> it was constantly changing. >> it constantly changed. >> like we were going to go to mexico, and then we ended up coming here. >> the staff on board though went all out. they really were. they did everything they could to make us as comfortable as possible. >> they really did. >> they were in just as much discomfort as we were. >> some of them more than we were. >> some of them more. >> i'm sure. thank you so much to all of you. thank you for delaying getting to a warm bed and a shower and everything. >> a hot shower. >> thank you, sweetie. >> we are very, very happy to be on the ground. we are. >> bye. >> thanks so much for taking the time to come talk to us. >> thanks to all of. >> you stay warm. >> we've got the atkins family i believe is coming up. >> atkins family. >> we keep track of the buses on the move because that's going to be how most people get out of here. and -- >> we want to -- want to

bringing in a doctor. so many people here have -- they've talked about the conditions and we talked to them on cellphones throughout the day and now in person. >> which is nice. >> which is wonderful. but some of the hygiene on the ship was horrific and a lot of these people are wondering, all right, i'm not feeling sick now, but am i going to be feeling sick in a few days? are they safe and sound if they're feeling okay now or not? >> i think the most important thing is definitely get to a warm shower, a nice bed and get some rest because honestly, time will tell what we're going to see in the next couple of days from this. but for the most part, if you're feeling well now, i would say get some rest. get home and for sure let the immune system take over. and hopefully, everything will be okay. >> and do you think in general that cruise ships are safe and keen? i mean, you know, this situation is obviously severe.

but we hear all the time about noroviruses and all sorts of things caused by whether it be water or food on ships. >> absolutely. i mean, when you put 4,000 people together in a closed environment, it creates a situation where you can have any type of gastrointestinal illness take over. but for the most part, cruise ships do handle these situations well. and this was a specific so this can carry a little bit of high risk, but for sure, i'm sure, you know, carnival cruise line did everything possible, and hand sanitizers were used as much as possible. and hopefully everything will be okay after this. >> yeah. all right, well thank you very much. please don't go anywhere. we'll be needing to talk to you in a bit. >> let me introduce you to the atkins family. this is a family i talked to earlier in the day. rusty, ben, and this must be brianna. >> that's right.

>> welcome back. >> happy valentine's day. looks like they remembered. >> somebody certainly remembered. how do you feel? >> excited to be on land. i kissed it when i first got off. >> you did? literally benlt down and kissed it? wow. >> you're not the first to tell us, actually. there were a number on people getting on the ground. for you now to be back with your family, it must have been emotional. >> i just felt, i missed them so much. you have no idea. just to be with them, just to let them know that i'm safe is just so much better than not having any contact at all. >> do you think you realize because of this and because of what happened, maybe if it was a regular cruise, you might not feel this way. now you appreciate them in a way you didn't? >> yes, ma'am. >> your mom and dad, what was it like to see her? >> oh, my word. this is -- this honestly has probably been the best day of the whole -- whole -- >> so exciting. >> the whole year. >> for parents, those waiting onshore, it was probably worse. mentally, you're thinking so much about the horrors.

>> the unknown. >> i wanted to be there for her, be taking care of her, as dad is supposed to do. i wasn't able to do that. so when i was able to see her, my goodness, what a great feeling. it was very, very awesome. >> so exciting. >> yeah. >> where are you headed now? >> to the hotel to eat, i hope. >> to the hotel. let's hope they keep the room service late. >> whatever she wants, she's getting it. >> you hear that? hear what dad said? if you have a wish list, you better get on those things. >> take advantage of it. it might wear off. >> you look wonderful. we're so happy for you. because we know how much it wore on you. great to see you. thank you for coming by and sharing with us. >> thanks so much to all of you. good luck. >> well, we're talking about getting everybody off this vessel. this is still a process that's going to take hours and hours. >> yes. >> it's not something that's done quickly.

sweet home alabama indeed. that's how everyone feels. we're joined here by carey and her sister, mother, and friends. this was your surprise 40th

birthday party. >> yes, it was. >> what a surprise it was. >> yeah, more than we bargained for. >> tell us how it happened. you're at home. they show up. >> yes, we met at my friend julie's house, and my mom and sister and best friend rachel were all hiding and they surprised me and then gave us the cruise tickets. so, and told us we're leaving the next morning. >> it had a lot more surprise to it than you actually thought. >> about three days later, yeah. >> you laugh. i mean, we look at you now. we're thrilled to see you all. you look wonderful, i have to say. >> thank you. >> but there had to be some dark moments. >> it was scary initially when we woke up and there was smoke in our hallway and they were making announcements over the p.a. that sounded scary. then julie saw a crew with life jackets running down the hall way. we thought it was time to go to the deck. >> with our life jackets. >> once we got up there and they told us things were calming down and we got up to fresh air, we waited with everyone to see what to do.

we were fine, we were calm. >> could you sleep in your rooms? no, you slept out on deck? >> we slept on deck 10 for three nights, and last night, we were in one of the dining rooms because it was a little colder. it was fine. comfy. >> a giant slumber party. >> you make it sound like you were able to turn things around. what did you eat? what did you have for food? >> they fed us lots of food. it may not have been what people preferred. the first day was the worst. >> a lot of canned stuff. >> peanut butter, yeah. >> as the ships started coming in and bringing supplies, it seems like they got a grill two days ago. they started cooking chicken and steaks. yeah, there was plenty of food. people were kind of greedy at first. we noticed there were lots of big plates of food.

then the crew finally figured out they needed to portion things out better, which we were happy about. >> i had a chance to talk to your husbands earlier. they had sort of long-faced expressions. >> they were very, very worried. >> we couldn't talk to them. the last time we talked to them was monday because we had no cell service once the shipped left us. they hadn't talked to us for a couple days and didn't know what was going on. we were fine. and once they talked to all of us, they knew everything was okay. >> and you're going now to get a shower, i would imagine. >> we have been showering onboard. it's been cold water. >> you were able to? >> we were lucky. >> it depends on what side the boat was listing. >> we were on the high side for the last couple days. >> small blessings. >> and the trade out is which would you prefer, a shower or toilet? >> and they got the toilets working today, so we have been using those as well. so probably a hot shower is what our priority is. >> not having a time limit. >> yes, no fast showers. >> so where are the men?

>> they're back there somewhere. >> they didn't ask for them. >> they were already on camera, we understand. >> our producers wanted the ladies. >> yes, well, here we are. >> so nice to see all of you. welcome. >> thank you very much. >> thank you, we're glad to be back. >> did it bring you all closer together? do you feel like you have gone -- >> in ways you don't even want to talk about. >> we know more about each other's bodily habits than we should ever know. >> that's what kept us laughing. we were making jokes about everything. >> having to poop in a bag. >> the nicknames we can't say on tv for everything we did. >> you gotta have toilet humor to get through this with a smile. >> absolutely. >> i can imagine the one-year reunion. >> we're not going on a cruise, probably. >> come to california. >> yeah. we have a redo for my birthday all planned, so we're good. >> we're going west. >> we're going to fly to california. >> thanks again, and have a good night.

sorry, baby. >> yeah. >> tell us about the attire here. >> well, first of all, sorry, carnival, for taking your bathrobe. i did not pay for this, but i figured they owed me the bathrobe. but yeah, i obviously did because we thought we were going to be in warm clielt, so i didn't pack a lot of warm clothes. i knew it would be chilly, so i had to snag the robe as we came off the ship. >> you're not alone. it's sort of the triumph attire. they seem to have the lovely parting gifts. >> somebody coined them the white walkers. >> yes, so how do you feel about how they handled it? some people are very angry at carnival? >> i understand, i think they handled it as best they could have. first and foremost, the crew that was on the ship did a marvelous job. some of them, i know, didn't sleep. we saw the guy on our floor, or one of the guys saw him asleep on the floor. he had basically a sheet over him and a pillow getting a couple hours sleep. whenever there was a problem

with the toilet, the plumbing obviously was probably the biggest issue and the smell, they were right on top of it and dealing with it as quick as they could. so obviously, this is -- >> they did a good job of managing expectations, too. the information that trickled out was probably well thought out to kind of keep people safe and calm, which really after all is said and done, people were pretty nice to each other, not super chippy. it worked out pretty well. >> that was another neat thing. all of the people who banded together, sharing pringles and candy. the people across the hall had to leave their door open because we had an inside cabin, no light in there, so they would keep their door open during the day. we got to know people like you would typically not get to know people. hanging out in the hall. going through something like this. we basically made friends for life, which is obviously had some value to it. >> a number of people have pointed that out. clearly, this was not the cruise

any of you anticipated, but in some ways, if you can look at a silver lining, it is the fact that you came through a tremendous ordeal, and a lot of people came through it together or made new friends in the process. >> for the vast majority of people, they're very kind, very considerate. i heard of situations of people fighting. we didn't see any of that. people were very anxious to get off the ship for obvious reasons, but i think for the most part, people were very kind to each other, and the staff always was smiling and very kind. >> you guys got off in what order? how is it we see you and there are other people waiting? >> he's a platinum member. >> oh, you guys are regulars. >> yeah, so they let us off, which was very, very nice. obviously, they let the folks in wheelchairs off first. but we were shortly there after, so that was pretty nice. >> brings a whole new meaning to the term poop deck. >> glad you said it and not us. thanks very much. >> thanks very much. >> appreciate both of you taking the time.

>> and what has it been like just in the past few hours here waiting to finally finish this ordeal? >> well, today, the mood kind of turned negative as everyone started listening to what was happening on shore. on the boat for the past couple days, it's been pretty positive and everyone helping everyone else. today when, you know, the rumors about the triumph had problems before this and things like that, sort of getting everybody down. so we're -- >> we have to ask you, bethany -- the tweets you have been sending out have actually been pretty entertaining. some of them really show you were able to keep a good, strong sense of comic about you. you know, just tellis about, was that a cathartic kind of thing? >> tweets are cathartic to me. something funny. if someone i know or don't know finds them funny, too, it's a

way to share my humor. you have to find the funny in any situation. of course, it was not on my bucket list to be marooned, but i'll take it. >> my favorite. >> one of your tweets, i believe, said no one is ever going to pick on you for overpacking. so am i interpreting it right, you have a coat and are not freezing? >> i have a sweater on right now. but i brought about five books and eight magazines, and we read them all cover to cover. so if i hadn't brought that much, we would have been entertaining each other with show tunes, so i think we're all grateful that didn't happen. >> we're looking at you right now. who is with you there? we can see you're not alone in the balcony. >> my friend susan is in the black on my right, and my mother is on my left, and it was her birthday last week, so we came on the cruise to celebrate that. >> and i would imagine we have heard from so many that they

have gotten to know those to whom they were already dear, friends and family, in a much closer way than ever before. did that happen for you also? >> oh, absolutely.

3:40 in the morning. >> so this is the first indication of the fire or that there's a problem? >> yes, the smell. and we were on the first floor, like i said. so next thing you know, i laid back down. next thing you know, you hear running through the hallways. and i opened the door to see what was going on. it was the firefighters. and then i looked and i saw smoke and i was like oh, my god. they were just telling us everybody get out. you all need to get out. we started heading up the stairs. and once we got like level four, they said it's -- everything's

been contained. you all go back to your cabins. so. >> that's how it all began? this is essentially joseph explaining. so from that moment which was probably the worst, it then deteriorated with no power, no toilets. >> nothing, nothing. i mean, it was -- it was disgusting, but the staff, they did such an amazing job. and i give them so much props because they -- they were amazing through it all. i mean, they worked their tails off to accommodate everybody's needs. i mean, me, i've had seven back surgeries. and i wasn't expecting to be on a week-long cruise. so i literally didn't bring enough medication. so i had to visit the infirmary. and you know get what i could from them. so -- >> and we've talked about that actually. there were a lot of people,

elderly people, people who thought it would be a four-day trip. turns out to at least double that. >> exactly. >> when you talk about not having enough medication, that becomes something -- >> yes, sir, yes, sir. >> what was the -- if there was a moment, you talk about -- what was the worst single thing that happened and maybe the best single that i can happened to you? >> well, the worst was i'm going to have to say it, a fire. but the best was i guess just having that quality time with my wife. you know? and just you know being able to pray with her and just they started a bible group. so we were doing that for the past four days. and you know, it was awesome. it was just a very uplifting spiritual thing that you felt. so we knew that we were going to make it safe. safe back.

>> you were talking about a life-changing event essentially. something that transforms you in some way. >> of course, of course. and i mean, i don't give them, carnival the company, i mean, i'll do it again. i'm not worried of not, you know, ever traveling with them ever again. i mean i will. but you know, it's going to be a little while before that happens. >> i understand. >> understandable. >> thank you. >> is it relief or just exhaustion? >> right now it's just exhaustion. it's pain. i'm in a lot of pain. i just really want a bed, you know, to. >> get on out there. >> thank you so much. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. >> we've been hearing -- i want to bring in kendall and trey love as they're coming in, one thing we've heard from quite a

few people is about that bible study group. for a lot of people, that was a very important thing. an impromptu group they set up meeting every night at 7:00. we met the two young girls from texas who won the tickets. and there was the family. >> it becomes very important at moments like this. >> kendall and trey come on in. nice to see new person. talked on the phone earlier. >> yeah. >> all right. how do you feel? >> glad to be on land for sure. >> yeah? >> yeah. a little tired but ready to get on the bus and go get a shower, be in a place where the toilet flushes. >> to new orleans or. >> fly out tomorrow to south carolina. >> when did you realize that it's phenol over? >> we could see land today. worst case we can take the life boats if we very to. >> i can see land. >> it's a big deal. >> what was the hardest thing? you know each other incredibly well. obviously you know each other in ways maybe you never thought you would, right? >> yes.

>> we were celebrating his 40th birthday which is monday. it will be an unforgettable birthday trip. the only time i was really afraid i guess is when all the alarms started going off sunday morning about the fire. we didn't know many details till later in the day. but the staff was amazing. you know, it could have been much worse. you know, god really protected us and so we made the best of it. >> did you have any idea how many people were actually following your plight? this is something that captured a lot of media attention. we all were watching whether you knew it or not. >> that was the biggest surprise to me. i was wondering if anybody other than our kids' classmates knew we were gone. to find out it was such a big deal, i was kind of surprised. >> kendall and trey, thank you so much. we really appreciate it. >> you look terrific. thank you for coming by. >> when we come back, we'll have

troublemaker. but this did not go in any way like this family thought? >> no, but it was 2 1/2 days of great fun and the rest of the time, it was family coming together, bonding. we were helping each other, supporting each other. and knowing that we were going to get through this. >> and that was kind of my point was that this turned into something far greater than just a trip to celebrate a birthday. this really became a family in had to come together. >> yes, it is. >> we're a close family as it is. and this just brought us closer because for my birthday, we had 31 people and sisters and a brother and daughter-in-law. and cousins and you know, it was just a large family. and then we invited our friends. so our friends came. >> your aunt i believe was airlifted off. >> well, she -- it wasn't actually an airlift.

she was taken by coast guard from our ship to another ship on monday because she needed dialysis treatment on tuesday. so we started to try to get her off board on sunday. but couldn't because of the water and the wave action so we were able to get her off finally with the coast guard's help. she literally had to fall back into the boat and then be carried off to the other one. >> you mentioned how rough it was. we all know that the stabilizer on the ship was broken and it was tilting quite a bit. was it really bumpy? did you really feel the rough seas? >> at times yes. >> the night before we felt it the most i think, but after that, it was -- leaning and then water started draining to one area of the boat. >> some people feared the boat was going to tip over in some way.

>> it was scary, but the crew kept telling us there's only a five degree tilt and that it was okay, it was fine. it was being done mainly because of the wind. we had to trust and we had to believe. and so you know, we -- it didn't move any farther than that. stove we were walking sideways sometimes about you. >> uh-huh. >> was it hard to trust them? i know we've heard they were wonderful. i don't mean it in that way. it's hard when you're worried for your life to trust when anyone tells you it's okay. >> because we he had that episode with my cousin, they were so good and they just took control and made sure she got off the boat. after that, i had total faith that they were there to take care of us because they did. from the moment that we told them that she was scheduled for dialysis and what could we do, they said don't worry. we'll take care of it.

she'll get it and they never stopped until she got off. even now when we got off the boat, three of the ladies that were the crew that were helping us were like please tell her that we are glad. >> the crew took a real -- >> we met and in those 2 1/2 days we got close to the crew. every time they would see us, how are you? all doing? are you doing okay? yes, it was. >> we've been hearing that from everyone. it is wonderful to hear because as we've heard from people, some of them were sleeping on the ground. they were going through the same thing. >> exactly. they were along with us with the same thing. >> thanks so much. >> thank you. >> welcome home. have a wonderful night. >> wonderful job with the makeup. >> thanks again to all of you. >> we're going to be talking in a couple of moments to two passengers who say they are never going to go on a cruise again.

we've talked to a couple of other people who feel that way. the first people to get off the ship were emotional, very teary. others have felt completely differently. >> just depends where you were and what they experienced. they talked about the small boat transfer when the aunt had to get off. you have to put your back to the water and somebody says let go and they catch. >> you anna ward and cheryl espy are with us now. nice to see both of you. >> we'll all fit in. welcome back. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> we're glad. >> and how do you feel? >> how do you feel? >> grounded. happy to be home. >> wonderful to be home. >> you realize you've come to the end of the ordeal. has it finally sunk in? >> no, when we were standing at the doors, we still didn't think it was happening.

>> if you let yourself freak out, you would be insane. we were like how are we going to do this? the toilets were flooding. two more days? really? we didn't believe it. >> how did you hold it together? what do you do? >> pray to each other. >> just. >> we prayed. we just talked to people. >> you couldn't because you just looked out. there was nothing for the longest time. not another ship. nothing. we were just drifting. >> we just made each other laugh. >> we did. >> we've heard from quite a few people. people have talked about prayer and faith and there was a prayer group. was that something a lot of people were a part of? did you meet new people through that? >> yeah, we did.

>> we went up. they had it a few different nights. we just went the first night. the other nights we were trying to find a different place to stay besides our cabin. >> we moved every single night. >> the lines for food were long. it was hard to time something. you just kind of had to go to each thing. >> what would happen at night. this is a ship in the middle of the ocean. it has to be very dark. what happens after the sun goes down? >> it was creepy. we had a flashlight. >> they had a little flashlight. we were in a cabin with no window. we would go in and it smelled awful. the toilets overflooded. we're on the eighth floor. our room guy was awesome and gave us this little flashlight. >> you couldn't see. you were just feeling around inside there. >> so will you ever go again. >> probably not. >> i won't. >> she says no, but i probably won't about you, i don't know. everybody kept saying this never happens.

>> much better than a lot of husbands and wives. >> true. we came off the ship much more close. >> how did you spend the time? >> a lot of cards were played. you know, assessing. we took photos. we all like the slogan became we've got nothing but time. we walked around, made friends. got know each other. honestly, it was a lot of watching the waves hoping to see land. >> and it is almost like going back to the way people before cruising became an industry. you had nothing to do with all the electronics cut off and your day is pretty much ruled by sun light. once it gets dark, there's nothing do. what was a day like? >> the first day we slept at 6:00. we went straight to sleep and woke up at 4:00 in the morning and it was still dark. we have to use our lights on our camera phones and to try to go to the bathroom or try to find a new shirt to wear or wash up

with a cloth. i don't know what else. >> looking for coffee. >> you know, small details. we did have that conversation. you don't realize how spoiled you are until you're sitting there just staring at each other. it's quite interesting. we played a lot of go fish. a lot of poker. >> does it make you realize you don't always want to be on your cell phone all the time? >> as -- heavy on technical computers, it's been amazing how quickly we dropped everything just to learn to talk and communicate via cards. >> that was everybody. stranger. it wasn't just our group of friends. it was people from rhode island, people from texas. you know, it was a big team effort. it was -- even the staff. everybody came together really well angeled nicely. >> do you think that everyone got along well. >> not everybody. >> i'm sure there were some -- >> it definitely got a little

bit tense today for sure. you had your breaking points every day. you kind of see people snap. but it was what's the point. you just kind of came together and we're still here. we've gone this far so keep going. >> how did you organize your day? was there an organization to the day. >> we tried to sleep a lot. but we ended up walking a lot more than we thought. stairs are enormous on there. you can't walk too much without getting tired. we wouldn't eat too much because the lines were hour, two hours long. we had to watch what we ate. it was kind of rough trying to figure out, i want to leave the cabin but i don't want to get cabin fever. i want to stay but i don't want to go out and mingle with the people. >> thanks and welcome back. >> so good to see you. >> thank you. >> are you going to save that robe? >> i am. i'm going to have it dry cleaned. >> fumigated. >> thanks to both of you. we appreciate it.
