the southeast flooded. rain soaking the area leaving people in cars strandsed. the worst may be still to come. we are tracking the storm. breaking news overnight. an olympic hero accused of murder. did he kill his model girlfriend in cold blood or all a tragic mistake? princess diana murdered? the claim about the princess' death. police investigate the allegation. >> good morning to you. welcome to "early start." i'm zoraida sambolin. >> i'm christine romans. it's monday, august 19th. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. we are going to begin with rain from the gulf coast to the

southeastern united states. more rain to that area. indra is tracking this for us. it seems you have been tracking it for weeks, even months. >> the swath from the gulf of mexico to the southeast is impressive to see. they can't handle anymore of this rain. heavy rain and high winds battered much of the southeast this weekend bringing flash floods and record rainfall. check out what members of one church saw after sunday service. waist deep water covering their car doors. a foot of rain fell in less than an hour. business owners along highway 49 found water rushing into their stores. >> fire trucks are out there. >> it didn't get that much rain from katrina. >> reporter: these motor "rick's list"s were stuck. a swath of tropical moisture

drenched the gulf coast to the carolinas. in miami beach, an elderly couple was killed while swimming. >> they were in cardiac arrest. we worked them to the hospital. they were pronounced dead. >> reporter: they weren't alone. they came to the aid of at least 50 swimmers. here is what we are talking ability t. tropical moisture in the yucatan over the weekend. this has been cruising into the area all weekend long and still, currently, we are dealing with this. it's all the way from friday. let's talk about what is going on. look at the amount of rainfall they have seen since friday, almost 10 inches. pensacola, 6.61 inches. it's moving into the carolinas. this is a surplus since june. you can tell some places almost

15 inches with more rain on the way. the flooding concern is going to be high. more rainfall is in the forecast. one to three inches, five inches of rain poz possible for the next few days. what's going on? we got a stationary front. it's not going anywhere. it's staying there. producing tropical moisture and more showers the next few days, monitoring more rain. here is the forecast as we go forward. additional one to three inches possible. stretching into the carolinas, still more rain. you can see the streets are flooded. not good news anywhere in the southeast. on the flip side, in the northeast, beautiful, but temperatures are going to be rising while looking for upper 80s. the complete opposite. i feel guilty saying how nice it is. >> i feel guilty, too. turning to the west, dozens of wildfires. idaho seems to be getting the worst of it. the beaver creek fire has burned more than 100,000 acres and

forced thousands from their homes. this is 8% contained at this hour. here is paul. >> reporter: it's sun valley, idaho. the race to save the playground took to the skies. 11 helicopters are available to continue the battle monday against the massive beaver creek fire. on the ground, more than 1200 firefighters, 100 of them from five of the hot shot crews along with the 90 inches. the beaver creek forced the evacuation of 2,000 properties. sun valley is home to pricey spreads, including second homes owned by tom hanks and bruce willis. richard dreyfuss tweeted, thank you firefighters and be safe. houses aren't worth lives. firefighters have been battling they are hearts out to contain

judge will allow them to present. they are hoping to introduce the case of hassan, a muslim sentenced to death for attacking fellow american soldiers in 2003. they want to argue he was a copy cat. closing arguments set this morning in the sentencing faze of bradley manning's trial. the 25-year-old facing a maximum sentence of 90 years in prison after his conviction of leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to wikileaks. last week, he apologized for his actions and for hurting the united states. a military judge could announce r decision as early as today. the sentencing gets under way for robert bales. he gunned town 16 civilians in afghanistan. he pled guilty to more than 30 criminal charges to avoid the death penalty. he now faces a life sentence.

a jury will decide if he should be offered parole. he should not have been stationed in afghanistan because of a history of ptsd and a traumatic brain injury. in egypt, the battle between civilians and -- the egyptian state tv says 24 soldiers were killed in an attack on the sinai pe innocence la. over the weekend, 36 people were killed. military says they were trying to break out protesters. they call the death an assassination. the death toll in the days of unrest stands at nearly 900. the u.s. is considering whether to continue giving aid to the country. something senator john mccain says should not be a question. >> when we threaten something as we did that we would cut off aid then not do it, you lose your credibility and influence. >> what is your description of

u.s. policy? >> there is no policy. there is no strategy. therefore, we react and we react poorly. >> mccain says the u.s. lost all credibility when it comes to the situation in egypt. in syria, a team of u.n. inspectors are on the ground to look into allegations chemical weapons were used during the ongoing civil war t. rebels claimed the other side used chemical weapons against them. so far, 100,000 people died in the conflict which has been going on for more than two years. breaking news from south africa. one of the most recognized athletes, oscar pistorius has gone before a judge to be indicted for the murder of his girlfriend. she was shot last valentine's day at his home. he claims he thought she was an intruder. prosecutors say it was more sinister. we are live this morning. good morning.

>> hi, there. oscar pistorius appeared in this court behind me a short while ago. it was brief. what was key is the fact the state has officially charged him with premeditated murder. that implications of that means there will be more severe sentencing at the end of this process. it carries a minimum of a life sentence, 25 years in south africa. there's an additional charge of the firearms act. what is important is in this indictment, they stress even though he and his legal team will argue he thought it was a tragic mistake and she was an intruder, they say it doesn't matter. he intended to kill a human being when he shot those bullets through the bathroom door. that doesn't matter whether it was her or an intruder.

it's why the state is arguing this premeditated charge still exists. i think tough times ahead for pistorius. the case against him, according to the state, they believe is strong. also what came out in court today is the trial will start on the third of march. it's likely, i must say, to go on for awhile. perhaps more than a year. a number of things. what you are seeing in this indictment is a long list of witnesses. 107 names are on this indictment. so, it could take a few years before reeva steenkamp's family believes justice is served. >> today would have been her 30th birthday. thank you. the population, 600,000 is coated with ash this morning thanks to the volcano erupting in south western japan. newscasters say it's like

14 minutes past the hour. welcome back to "early start." there's an allegation of what caused the death of princess diana almost 16 years ago. could it have been the work of british special forces? we are live in london. itis been 16 years, millions of dollars. are they opening a brand-new investigation here? >> reporter: not at the moment. police here saying they are

currently assessing the information for credibility and its reallevancerelevance. they are not saying what the information is. however, there are reports in the british media that includes a newspaper that says this new information includes the allegation that the british military was somehow involved in the death of princess diana back in 1997. the sunday people reporting they had access to a seven-page handwritten letter from the inlaws of a former special forces sniper in that letter, they say this particular sniper who remains unnamed boasted to his wife that the s.a.s., a specialist community here in the uk was involved or behind princess diana's death. lots of questions here in the uk as to why these allegations are coming up now as you say, 16 years after her death.

obtained the report that said it was carried out to isolate the country from a possible soviet threat. many admitted working for the cia. this is the first time the agency, itself, owned up to the role. the drills between the u.s. and south korea under way and stepped up moves by north korea to negotiate an end to some of the attentions with the southern neighbors. the drills involve 30,000 troops taking part in war games. so far, no comment from the north that called these exercises preparations for invasion. a scary fall for a man at a golf course in one of california's most picturesque places. the 25-year-old tumbled more than 100 feet off a cliff at the half-moon bay golf course south of san francisco. it is not clear what he was doing along the edge of that cliff. there are signs that do warn players to stay away from the edge there.

uprising in egypt. protesters return to the streets in a bitter battle with the country's military that has killed hundreds. rain soaking the southeast. the severe storm leaving communities under water. what is still in store for the area. a 12-year-old girl attacked by a bear. what she did to get away and stay alive. what is being done now to find the bear that attacked her. >> terrifying. there have been a few of these. >> several. >> welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. we are going to start with egypt. the violence of a civil war continue this is morning. in the latest incident, two dozen soldiers were killed on the sinai peninsula after 36 islamists died and there are conflicting explanations as to why and how they died. officials are telling protesters, it's not in your

best interest to continue fighting. reza is live in cairo this morning. with the death toll near 900 people, you have been following this closely. is there any sign of the violence letting up? >> zoraida, you hate to see it, but there's no sign of the violence winding down. no street violence but we have seen horrible incidents and bloodshed in other forms. many fear this is what's coming in the weeks ahead unless something changes. first off this morning, 24 egyptian soldiers killed when their convoy was attacked in egypt's northern sinai peninsula. they have been plagued with militancy. the government suggested the attacks were carried out by elements linked to the muslim brotherhood. yesterday, at least 30 detainees

were killed. some of them were supporters of the muslim brotherhood being transported with 600 other prisoners to a prison in northern cairo. there are conflicting accounts as to what happened. some officials say some of them tried to escape. others say they took a police officer hostage. at some point, a police officer shot tear gas into one of the vans. state media says 38 prisoners choked to death. it's not clear what happened, why anyone would shoot tear gas in a police van. if history is an indication, it's unlikely there will be a credible investigation to find out what happened. >> washington seems to be taking a tougher stance with some lawmakers calling for aid to be cut off. is the government listening? there's criticism over the $1 billion given to egypt from the united states. what is it going to take in

order for them to listen? >> well, at this point, they are not listening. the point is, the aid is still flowing. what's coming from washington is a lot of rhetoric and the authorities here so far paying little attention. this is playing out with the two factions that are fighting. increasingly, the government is using the narrative, this is a war against terrorism suggesting the muslim brotherhood is linked with terrorist activity. they are going to take an aggressive stance with the crackdowns and the question is, is the brotherhood going to fadeaway? are they going to stop fighting? they are determined to keep coming out and protesting, which signals more turmoil. >> reza live in cairo, thank you. breaking news this morning from south africa where olympic hero, oscar pistorius has been

indicted in the murder of reeva steenkamp. he claims he mistook her for an intruder. prosecutors said he did it in cold blood. today would have been steenkamp's 30th birthday. the family not at the court with no plans to attend the trial. where we stand nearly five years after the market's collapse. treasury secretary with the heads of fdic and consumer protection bureau will all be prez sent. after reforms became law, they have yet to be finished. a deadly weekend where rip currents are responszable for two deaths. an elderly man and woman were caught up in the waves, pulled under and suffered cardiac arrest. one of 50 rescues along the beach. the choppy surf driven by the winds.

southern mississippi is drying up after almost six inches of rain fell in two hours. cars stuck and fire crews having to come out to help all the people. officials there handed out stand bags to protect the homes at risk of being inundated with the water. can you imagine this? people went to church. by the time they left, the parking lot was full. some of they had waded out to their cars. the water did eventually go down and they were able to head home. >> good gracious, this is incredible. not that we are blaming you, but we are looking for explanations. >> this is incredible. at this point, month after month. we started this trend of drenching the southeast in june. july, setting records. it is august and we are still talking about an incredible

amount of tropical moisture. the influx into the south. you can see, this is the area we are watching. each day, that moisture got closer. combined with a stationary front, they brought together unbelievable amounts of rainfall. i want to show you how far over the average, alone, over the average, 15 inches in macon. ft. lauderdale, 11.35 inches. 20 to 30 inches of rain just since the beginning of june. this is what it looked like over the weekend. 9.46 inches. pensacola, 6.61 inches. the flooding concerns are high. there's nowhere for the water to go. we are looking at warnings currently. more rain is on the way. all the moisture still in place. one to three inches of rain is possible for the next three to four days here. one to three inches in tallahassee up to the carolinas. i wish i had better news.

look at that extended forecast. surprise, surprise. more rain. >> be careful out there, everybody. in idaho this morning, the race against mother nature to try to stop a series of raging wildfires turning tens of thousands of acres. this fire is threatening sun valley, the playground of the rich and famous as it grows in size. it stands atmore than 100,000 acres. 2,000 homes have been evacuated, 7,000 are threatened. the fire is only 8% contained. crews think they have the upper hand on the elk fire that is nearby. it's 55% contained. residents are being let back into their homes. the elk fire burned some 130,000 acres. >> oklahoma where the state is studying a proposal to make safe rooms mandatory in public schools three months after the tornado flattened moore,

oklahoma. several children died in the monster twister. less than a third of the schools in oklahoma have a safe room or closure. several hundred gathered to circulate petitions to force bob filner out of the mayor's job amid allegations he sexually harassed more than a dozen women. they have to gather 100,000 signatures to put the recall on the ballot. scott brown, the former senator for massachusetts is exploring a run telling supporters he's got interest in his quote, brand of politics. he's considering a run for massachusetts governor. he was a surprise winner in 2010's election to replace ted kennedy in a state that's been a democratic stronghold. penn state apparently

settled one lawsuit from a sex abuse case of jerry sandusky. victim five is bound by a confidentiality agreement and received fair and adequate compensation. there are some 30 other suits against the university that are pending. sandusky is serving at least 30 years after being convicted last year on 45 counts of sex abuse against minors. trayvon martin's mother is speaking out about a stop and frisk policy days after it was ruled unconstitutional. it's wrong to give police the authority to stop anyone because of the color of their skin. ray kelly said stop and frisk is effective and getting rid of it would cause violent crimes to rise in new york. despite the findings, it does not target people based on race. tighter background checks are now the law in illinois.

from where a 12-year-old girl was attacked last week. she was jogging on her grandfather's property last thursday when she was attacked suffering cuts and a puncture wound on her thigh. >> a bear came out of nowhere and attacked her from behind, knocked her to the ground. he went to get up and get her way. the bear came at her again. at that point, she didn't know what to do. she had been injured severely and couldn't get up. she decided to lay there and play dead. >> it saved her life. she is out of the hospital and back with her family. all told, there have been at least seven bear attacks on people throughout the united states and recent days. that young girl, you know what she was worried about? getting back to play soccer. >> oh, my. another frightening attack story. a shark attack.
