>> i'm zoraida sambolin. >> even in chicago, which has been plagued by gun violence, this is a startling event. police say 13 people have been shot in the park on the city's south side including a 3-year-old child. his family telling the "chicago tribune" his name is deande howard and in critical condition and his uncle was shot dead on labor day. many in the community ran to this scene once the gunfire stopped. >> i just heard 20 shots. i walked over here and police over here real quick. they got over here real fast. >> how many people did you see down on the ground over here? >> so far, i think it's about 10, 11, 12, right up in that number. >> witnesses say a man drove up to the park and just opened fire. this apparently has happened at this park before with at least one witness telling the chicago

sun times the gang members drive around this park just looking for people to shoot. so far, no one is in custody. chicago, of course, has been dealing with gang violence for years now. according to phish statistics, chicago is now the nation's murder capital and the "chicago tribune" says at least 315 people have been murdered in the city so far this year, more than 1,600, 1,600 have been shot since january 1st. >> that is remarkable. we know is there a serious problem in chicago but 1,600 people since january is outstanding so we are trying to figure that out happened last year. new details about the shooting rampage at the washington navy yard that left 12 people and the shooter aaron alexis dead. the fbi says it took minutes for alexis to assemble his gun inside the bathroom and emerge firing and seemingly picking his victims at random.

we are hearing from two people who had their own frightening encounter with alexis back in august. glenda and michael boyd were at the airport in virginia when alexis approached them with a question about one of their relatives. >> he said, that lady, she laughing at me? she keeps looking at me, what is she laughing at? you know? and i said she is just laughing. you know, she doesn't even see you. he started getting a little belligerent and starts using profanity and going off and he kept reaching towards his midriff, his waist like he was reaching for something, maybe a weapon? >> the boyd's asatisfy were fortunate to get away unharmed. president obama will attend a vigil in memory of the victims

of the shooting. this is a look at the capital. amazing it can wreak so much havoc in our lives. ten days left until the federal government shuts down and it does not appear that anything that happened under that dome today will keep this from happening. cnn's jim acosta reports. >> reporter: with house republicans setting a vote today on a temporary spending bill that would defund obamacare, washington is edging closer to a government shutdown. ten days until the government runs out of money and a possible debt default not far behind, white house officials say president obama is ready to engage with congress. >> the president will be in conversations with congressional leaders in the coming days about the need to deal with these pressing deadlines. >> reporter: that was a response to house speaker john boehner who complained in this web video the president is more willing to deal with russians than the

republicans. >> while the president is happy to talk with vladimir putin, he won't deal with the congress with the issues that threaten our debt ceiling. >> jay carney offered this colorful defense of the president's outreach. you're referring to speaker boehner's video, is that right? >> that put out this morning saying the president is more willing to negotiate with vladimir putin than he is with house republicans? >> that is irrefutable false but i think the video demonstrated putin envy. >> reporter: the president stayed out of the conversation on thursday. the white house was taking note of the bruising battle inside the gop. texas senator ted cruz give up on defunding obamacare and then appeared to reverse course. >> i will do everything necessary and anything possible

to defund obamacare. >> that was jim acosta reporting. a government shutdown could lead national parks closed and thousands of workers furloughed. the fbi is warning it could leave his agency unable to do its job. they say any further budgets cut to the budget may force him to put agents on furlough and that could hit all of those in the fbi, including those who investigate crimes. assad regimen calling for a cease-fire. syria's deputy prime minister making that announcement in a news release saying the war has reached a stalemate. the syrian government now calling for peace talks in geneva to resolve the dispute

diplomatically. kerry claims anyone reading that report can easily connect all of the dots and he says the onus is now on the world to stand up and speak out. russian officials have already dismissed the report as bias and incomplete. more big news coming out of that region. perhaps historic outreach from iran. their new president has written an op-ed in "the washington post" calling for a constructive approach to thorny issues like iran's nuclear program. he writes failing to engage leads to everyone's loss. he says with we need to aim 4 i higher and talk. diplomatic battle between the u.s. and the leader of venezuela. the president there claims the obama administration has blocked him from flying over the united states air space on an upcoming trip to chilean. the state department denies the

claims saying the permission was actually granted and that is he is free to fly over puerto rico for his trip. >> i hope they work that out. >> yeah. from china, a woman apparently survived for 15 days in an abandoned well. she's in there somewhere down there being rescued. she apparently had fallen in that well while out picking medicinal herbs. her family thought she had been kidnapped but passer-by heard her scream. she drank well water to survive. her condition is amazingly improving. >> that is a will to survive. coming up, nearly a hundred people killed. towns destroyed. tropical storm manuel causing utter chaos. we are going to show you the hardest hit areas. a rare brain eating amoeba who killed a child.

left the beach resort of acapulco cut off and plagued by looterers. a crocodile washed up with floodwaters. two men tried to catch it with ropes as it thrashed about. we sound much worse damage 15 miles away in this town. this gentleman shows us where the river broke through a container wall and washed away his kitchen. he climbs to the roof as half his timber shack swept away. we don't even know what to do, to tell you the truth, he says. so far, no government aid. medina and his family are left to eat eggs and tortillas donated by neighbors and drink juice they found in a trash dumpster. neighbors shovel mud off of

their sidewalks and out of their homes. here, they tell us they feel like they have been completely forgotten. shasta darlington, cnn, acapulco, mexico. >> so much hardship and big problems there. the question where is that giant weather system heading now? indra petersons joins us here in our very own weather center. >> we are always watching where that tropical moisture goes. a little bit of a different picture today. here you can see the remnants of manuel. notice the stream of tropical moisture making its way into the u.s. not like last night. it's shifting a little bit farther east and we are going to be looking at texas and we are going to be looking out towards arkansas and louisiana and you can see the moisture headed their way. seems like a good thing since texas had a drought but when you see that, you see more runoff and flooding potential. this is heavy rain. we are expecting it to go through the weekend. to 5 inches in louisiana and arkansas and mississippi and

this will make headlines this weekend as the heavy storms start to form. the mixed bag. can you see the drought conditions throughout the region which, again, sounds good and they are getting that rain but it means flooding potential is high as the ground can't handle as much water as normally a place that would get more rain could. look at the temperatures in the midwest. these are the highs from yesterday and now look at the drop. huge drop! we are talking about 70s in the forecast today. but feeling a lot cooler. we will eventually see the same thing in the northeast this weekend with what you guys love, the weekend forecast of cool temps and rain. >> which when is this rain coming here? >> saturday and sunday. you're welcome. >> do you have plans? >> rays are coming for the weekend. i want to know exactly when so i can be hiding. save my nap for them. authorities in oklahoma still trying to confirm just whose remains they pulled from two cars in a lake. they are conducting dna tests now on the remains and comparing those results to the living

family members of six people missing for decades. this case had gone cold until this discovery. the investigators say it could take up to a year to figure out these dna matches but the makes and models of the cars actually do line up leading the brother of one of the missing people to tell the oklahoman how could it not be them? >> those are remarkable images they have, right? >> look at the old cars just rusted out and preserved. >> 16 minutes past the hour. a police chief who posted profanity laced shoot 'em up videos on youtube is marked for resignation. the council voted to have him fired. kessler has the right to a public hearing and his attorney says he will take advantage of that opportunity. that hearing could happen within ten days. rare brain eating amoeba that killed a 4-year-old mississippi boy outside of new orleans may be linked to hurricane katrina.

greg smith was playing on a slip and slide. he died august 1st. health experts say after the 2005 hurricane, reduced population in that parts of louisiana meant less water usage which made it easier for the amoeba to survive in pipes. they are using additional chlorine to try to kill off that amoeba. this is my favorite story of the day. it is so sweet. it is what they call minnesota nice. it came out of a tale of not so nice behavior. a 19-year-old manages a dairy queen in hopkins southwest of minneapolis. he was working the cutter last week when he saw a visually impaired man drop a 20 dollar bill. you know what he saw next? another customer pick it up and put it in her purse! >> he just kept walking. that's when the lady picked it up. i thought she is going to give it back because she picked it up so quickly. i said, ma'am, i'm not going to serve someone as disrespectful

this morning. chicago is no stranger to violence but those on the scene say what is unusual this time is the sheer number of people hit. >> it was just a lot of police, a lot of ambulance. just a lot of wreck. a lot of people and everything. >> it happened on a basketball court on the city's south side. witnesses say a man drove up and opened fire. the kind of thing at least one witness says happens all the time at the park. it is believed to be gang-related as well. fbi statistics now show chicago with the nation's murder capital last year. the "chicago tribune" says 315 people so far this year have been murdered in chicago and more than 1,600 people have been shot. but listen to this, folks. those numbers seem to actually be trending lower than last year. even though it's still the murder capital of the world. >> still very high numbers and no consolation to the people in

do to threaten another recession. >> senate republicans say they do not have the votes to get it through that body and democrats are threatening to strip out the provision, defunding obamacare before sending it back to the house and all this, as you heard, the shutdown clock is going to continue ticking. >> get this. the campaign against obamacare has a controversial new mascot. you might call him creepy uncle sam. he is appearing in new ads. he is coming up here. wait for it. these ads from a group called there he is, creepy uncle sam. from a group called generation opportunity that wants young people not to sign up for health care coverage under the law. the ads show that rather creepy uncle sam emerging during some intimate medical procedure. >> no kidding. >> the group responsing the ad is funded by the conservative koch brothers. house of representatives voting to trim $40 billion from the food stamp program and supposed to happen the next ten

years. the bill largely targets adults without new england kids only eligible for three months and need to meet job requirements. only republicans supported this measure in a narrow 217-210 vote and it faces and uphill climb in the senate. food stamps are used by about 47 million americans. the money laundering conviction of former house majority leader tom delay has been overruled. they rule the evidence found against him is insufficient. the district attorney's office says it will appeal the court's ruling. the post office says it may need an emergency jump in postal rates to keep the mail coming. the postmaster general has asked lawmakers for quick action on a long-term financial plan that says a rate hike may be needed because fast approval is unlikely. postal service board of governors could decide on a hike, we understand as early as

next week. the post office expects to lose $6 billion this year. authorities in colorado have now identified a seventh victim from this week's devastating flooding there. 80-year-old man who apparently defied mandatory evacuation order and tried to go back to his home after bringing his wife to safety. three other people remain missing. >> the problem in colorado now, oil spills. hundreds of natural gas and oil wells were shut down by the flooding. some saw their tanks topple and leading to small bills and residents report seeing chemical slicks in the water. >> sounds flammable and something you don't want to touch. you can smell the chemicals in the water. >> tanks are toppled and we are going site-to-site and make sure we don't have leaks and where we do, we report it and address it with the local officials immediately. >> what they don't need, more

problems. so far, only two official spills have been record and both said to have been small and governor expects the water will dilute the pollutants and say no threat to humans right now. >> it is friday. hopefully, that means a nice weekend forecast. if it doesn't, we will blame indra petersons who is going to bring it to us. >> happy friday. i want to start what is going on in mexico. looking at the tropical moisture from the remnants of manuel. remember, a few weeks ago in colorado all of this tropical moisture over the rockies and enhanced rainfall and flooding. a little bit of a different picture because we see the cold front has slid farther east. still a lot of moisture going into the region. the difference here instead of the rockies providing the threat for flooding will be there have been drought conditions in texas. for that reason, heavy rain in the area is going to have a hard time making its way into the soil and see a lot of runoff and flooding. 3 to 6 possible around houston and 2 to 5 out towards arkansas

and new orleans seeing that heavy rain. this is a concern as we move forward in time. other big story. the cold front making its way across the country is dropping temperatures in the midwest. lease these 90s. now today dropping down to the 70s and feel a lot better but, of course, every time you bring that hot and cold air together you're talking about some rain. want to show you even new york city feels like it's warming up as we get towards that weekend but we drop the temperatures. let's show you that front. there it goes making its way through the ohio valley friday and for us saturday night and into sunday. i thought you heard you want rain this weekend? >> no. nobody wants rain but thanks any way. appreciate it. fire near yosemite national park is called unprecedented. forestry officials say a 60-mile swath where everything is dead. trees, vegetation, simply

kayly. they have been raised since just babies. >> they still look like babies. >> the pair disappeared earlier this week. but they were located all the way in florida. they were apparently taken by two young men who had been staying with the researcher over the summer. >> gosh! complicated story. >> a rescuer from florida had found out about the theft and tracked the men down and convinced them to turn the apes over. >> explain to them that this was not going to go away. they were hoping to sneak the gibbons back to nebraska. young gibbons had been taken from the only home that they had known. they had been a little traumatized. we did have to work with them a little bit. >> i hope the gibbons are no longer traumatized and they are now at a sanctuary and their owner is making arrangements to have them returned to nebraska. >> are they wearing clothes? >> i think it's a lakers shirt on! must be a kobe bryant fan!

rangel some of the more conservative catholics around the world and some people who say he should be talking about issues like abortion. priests in the united states say he should be talking more about abortion. >> i was going to say much of that criticism has come from priests in the united states. they are looking to their pope to speak out and adopt a tough line on gay marriage and abortion and things like that. pope francis says the church is set on this and we don't have to talk about it, he says, in this interview, all of the time. another illustration of how he wants to shift the emphasis away from these controversial issues. it also indicates he is a conservative. he not looking to change doctrine. he wants to emphasize things like poverty, the plight of immigrants and conflict in the
