i hope sunday morning is treating you well so far. i am christi paul. >> i am victor blackwell. this is new day sunday. this is cnn breaking news. at this hour, we start with break news. cnn can affirm there are between 10 and 15 attackers in a kenyan mall. there are 30 people being held in the mall. the attackers say they will not negotiate. so let's start from the beginning, when the terrorists ambushed the mall it was about

24 hours ago, and they killed 59 people and five hostages were released overnight, and 200 people wounded and several americans are among them. zain verjee is there. set the scene of what is happening around it and who is there trying to get the hostages out of the mall. >> reporter: well, westgate mall is a short distance behind me. the media has been moved back because they are concerned about security reasons or if they went live the hostage takers could see what was happening on tv and figure things out. this huge yellow crane just drove by and it's going up to the mall, so we are not sure if that's is going to be used in

any kind of operation, and right now, 59 people dead, and from sources adding to that, there could be as many as 30 hostages. we don't know their condition. when you talk to people here and read the newspapers, and you just hear stories of horror, of escape, how people were hiding, and one person hiding in the vault of a bank and running to find any cover we could. we couldn't believe it, but my aunt was one of them. listen to what she said. >> all of a sudden we heard some shots and people rushing and we realized we were under attack or somebody was at the supermarket, something similar, and we rushed to the back trying to hide, and we heard random shots from

everywhere, upstairs and downstairs, and then we were there for quite a while, and people were petrified and crying and praying. but after half an hour or 40 minutes, i was told that there were hostages being held and we realized it could be a terrorists attack. >> reporter: my aunt was on vacation here in kenya to visit with my dad and her in laws from london when this happened. a shocking event for so many people here. and kenyans are resilient. and one of the things that was sad, guys, it was also a children's cake cooking contest going on and it was for charity, so that's why you are seeing in some of the pictures a lot of children as casualties in this.

>> we're happy that your aunt is okay, and we will continue to follow this as this continues. thank you. witnesses say that the mall was very crowded and we know now because of the competition in part when the gunman attacked. here is some of them recapping what happened in their own words. >> the next thing we know we heard shots and people rushing, and it sounded like ak 14s. >> i was confused and terrified. >> i just talked to somebody, and they said there were snipers. >> we heard three shots fired and then i saw people running. >> just stay down. just stay down.

>> we heard this heavy -- it was like grenades and all that, and my wife tells me, please, let's just get out because it looks like a terrorists attack. >> what is your name? >> please! please! >> there was blood on the floor, and not a substantial amount but drops that looked like somebody that had been wounded. >> just people praying and kr u crying, and it was rather traumatizing for everybody. >> there have been security checks, and obviously today was not a day when they came through. >> that is just so terrifying.

you feel for these people as you are watching some of the newest video coming in. our next guest saw it with his own times as well, tyler hicks, and he is with us by phone from nairobi. as i understand it you went into the mall and took photographs of the scene. how did you get in and what did you see? >> caller: i happened to be close to the mall when the violence broke out. as i approached the mall i could see lots of people running away and as i got closer it was clear people had been shot, i saw people shot in the stupl eubg and the leg, and dozens of injuries among terrified civilians. i continued to move along, carefully along the front of the

mall where i saw three men that had been killed just at the front entrance of the mall, and one of them inside the car i had been driving, and continued to proceed in an upper parking garage where i, again, saw more people streaming out. the police and the army who were working there were desperately trying to get people evacuated out of the building. i saw this as an opportunity to get inside, to go against the flow of the people and into the mall and to see what was going on inside, and that's really where we got a real sense of how bad things were. >> tyler, i know that i read that there were people inside the mall running outside, but once they ran outside the mall, there was firing going on there, too, so they ran back inside the mall. do you have any idea what kind of parameter these attackers might have set up?

they were shooting both inside and outside, were they shooting from one location or dispersed throughout the mall. what do you know? >> it was very confusing inside. not only for the few photographers in there, and also for the security forces who are trying to contain the situation, and evacuate civilians. it became clear within a few minutes of getting inside the mall, nobody really knew where the gunmen were. there were a lot of places inside that one could hide, there is a movie theater and casino, and a huge supermarket and all kinds of shops. they really could have been anywhere. and there were not very many of the police and arm kry in at th time, and it was difficult to move around. while we were moving from place to place, you could see that there were people who had been

killed who were laying in different parts of the mall, and one next -- there were three men in a cafe who had fallen next to where they had lunch, and another man outside an atm machine at a bank and another at the intrupbsz entrance of a sup and it was clear it was serious and nobody knew where they were. >> you teamed up with a military team and you were in the mall for a couple hours. paint a picture for us, because i think the pictures you are providing tell one part but the writing in your blog tell another block. the people that heard the shots, they were hiding. there was a sweep to find the people hiding from the shooters. >> yeah, it was really amazing to see, even after being there an hour, two hours, people continued to suddenly come out of shops. they barricaded themselves

inside by locking the doors or pulling the metal gates down in front of the storefront windows, and that was -- every 15 or 20 minutes suddenly it seemed that, you know, 20, 30, 50, 100 people would come out of another place, and they were just terrified. even though they could hear people outside, they couldn't tell if it was the police or the army, and they were staying low, which was the right thing to do. >> tyler, talk to us about the challenges of the open air mall, and even being able to tell the good guys from the bad guys in something like this. >> well, i never saw any of the armed militants. however, there was shooting going on, and there was exchange of gunfire while we were in the mall. it is a big open air fall, a very modern place that would be

to the standard of any western mall, anyplace you would see in the united states. also, because of the design, there is a lot of open ground. it's difficult to have cover when there is so many places where the militants can be, including the ground floor parking garage. there are six floors of the westgate mall, so as you can imagine this is a big area to try and contain. >> tyler, again, we are so grateful that you are okay. thank you for giving us that first-hand account and helping us understand what was happening there. take good care. >> thank you. isn't it interesting, victor, all the people with the hands up, you think they are probably making them do that to make sure they have innocent civilians and not somebody else. >> yeah, kenya officials said they were making sure the people

officials say the attacker wore an afghan army uniform. it's the latest on the so-called green on blue attacks. the gunman was killed by forces there on the scene. number four, president obama will be speaking at a memorial today for the victims of last week's navy yard shooting. the service will be held at the marine barics in washington, d.c. >> number five, 1.3 tons of pure cocaine. that's what french officials found hidden inside of 30 suitcases traveling from venezuela to france. now, this was made on september 11th, but the authorities didn't publicize their find until this weekend.

the mall massacre in kenya has a lot of people asking could this happen here at home, at the mall where i shop every saturday, or sunday? 22 hours after terrorists storms an upscale mall in nairobi, 50 people or more are dead. >> yeah, so how do you secure the soft targets, and everybody is wondering, as you said, can it happen here? i want to bring in margaret conley who is with us from new york. a lot of people do wonder -- a lot of people wonder how vulnerable is this? >> in this case, in kenya, there were americans involved that were in that mall in kenya and it raises concerns about security here at home.

it may be more than 7,000 miles from kenya to the united states, but a massacre halfway around the world couldn't bring a tragedy any closer to home. this woman kept hidden in the stairwell as the chaos unfolded. >> we waited in the stairwell for an hour and a half, and there were two people with me that had superficial gunshot wounds, well, in the stairwell with me, not with me, but there were 60 of us. >> and it raises the issue of mall security on u.s. soil. >> soft targets are always attractive to terrorists because they are usually not defended and it's an effective way of achieving the object of terror.

>> and one of the largest enclosed shopping centers in the country visited by 42 million people a year. e i think if you are looking for 100% safety you should wrap yourself in bubble wrap and never leave home. >> it has something many things they do. it's a lockdown drill to try to prevent casualties in an attack. >> if something bad should happen, we don't want to say law enforcement will be here and they can protect you. we want to know what will happen if law enforcement gets here. >> for the average american citizen, you go to the grocery store and gas station, and you go to the shopping mall, and you go to a movie theater, and you take walks in your neighborhood, and anyone of those situations

could make you vulnerable if other people or another person is out there determined to conduct an attack. >> now, tom fuentes continued that and he said you could be in the wrong place at the wrong time. another security analyst that we spoke with said the only thing we can do is strengthen our resolve and not let these terrorists attacks take hold in the country. >> thank you. let's get you the latest on the shooting on the ground in kenya there as we wanted to share some of the latest numbers with you. cnn confirmed 10 to 15 gunmen arrived in the assault, and still people being held. >> reporter: it was not clear what the conditions of the

hostages were, but they were isolated along the gunman in a particular area. he wouldn't give any more information. i asked him what he could say that is specific but not compromise what was going on inside. it's really a tough situation right now. the whole mall is still under siege. it has been surrounded and there is no way out for the terrorists to go. they insisted on twitter repeatedly, which is interesting, because they are contacting their guys outside that they are putting out that they will not negotiate, that that is not an option. so as kenyan security forces are collaborating with british and american and israelis who are experts in this kind of situation, and it's really tense, and the situation is on going. it looks like a war zone on the

way up to my house with the paramilitary forces. >> one of the interesting points we have seen this morning is a report that there may have been a white female who may be one of the attackers. you have heard anything more of that? >> yes, this is a white woman that is suspected to be among the hostage takers. we did hear that they did have reports of a white woman among the group, and kenyan intelligence are requiring the report. we were asked if the white woman was known as the white widow, and her name is samantha lookwait, and this could be a huge deal if she was in that mall. because her husband was one of

the bombers in london. she has been wanted for an alleged role as an al qaeda woman and operating as a fina e financeer. they looked at all the explosives that had similar fingerprints to the bombings. national agencies have been trying to get her. this would be a big deal if she was at the westgate mall, but it's unclear whether is that true or whether the white woman spotting is real, but we did ask the spokesperson and he said they were not ruling anything out and analyzing everything. >> zain verjee, thank you, and we will check in with you all morning long. keep it right here.

want to make sure that you know what is happening around the world. let's get right to it. first of all, we want to go to beijing. everybody there is watching the trial of bo xilai. once a famous politician and now being sentenced to life in prison. >> they call it china's trial of the century, and it's the politically most sensitive one. and now bo xilai has learned his fate, getting a life sentence. he was a high-flying communist party official, and because of the scandal that rocked china, he is being brought down by the law and politics. he can appeal in ten days, and the way he fought the charges, he probably will. >> david mckenzie, thank you so

much. we appreciate it. syria, as you know, has met its first deadline in turning over the list of chemical weapons. >> reporter: the syrian government appears to have met the first deadline. there was a report from damascus on saturday that is supposed to include an inventory of all of syria's massive arsenal of chemical weapons. a senior u.s. administration official tells cnn the white house is both surprised and encouraged by the level of detail there. there is still a great deal of diplomacy to be done before we can ever see the possibility of the united nations' inspectors down on the ground and trying to dispose of the deadly arsenal. to germany where people are headed to the polls there for the presidential election there.

and we have more there from fred. >> reporter: more than 50 million people eligible to vote in germany and this election important for america because germany is the fourth biggest economy in the world. it's also the country that is leading the charge to get europe out of its economic difficulties. chancellor merkel is ahead in the polls, but the question is whether the commissioner will make it back into parliament. i want to send you over to victor who will take you to iran, so on speak. >> everything is possible in the world of politics, and that's the tweet from the new president in iran. he is now saying he has not ruled out meeting with president obama at the upcoming assembly in new york.

not heard a lot from the new president. >> the tone is so different. and mahmoud ahmadinejad, he was not wanting to engage with the west. and here is a president now that release the 11 high profile political prisoners, and he said we don't need fire walls and don't need to live behind walls, and he says via twitter, happy new year, which is unprecedented. but let's hear ann curry talking earlier this week. >> mahmoud ahmadinejad said the holocaust is a myth. do you agree? >> calle >> translator: i am not a historian. i am a politician. but what is important is the people of the world grow closer

cnn can now confirm 59 people are dead at westgate mall in nairobi, kenya. 10 to 15 gunmen are holed up, and they are holding 30 people hostage, and this is according to kenya and western diplomatic forces there. and we will talk to zain verjee from her home. you have heard anything new? >> reporter: a short while ago we spoke to a spokesperson here, and he did not give many specifics. we get conflicting information about what levels of the mall the people are in or not in. and armed defense forces are there as well.

the situation is intense and fluid and changing. the objective really of the spokesperson was to get as many people out as possible. ever since the siege started, 1,000 people have been able to come out. 59 people have been killed and many injured really badly. you know, it's so difficult to look at these numbers and then realize that this is a mall that i go to all the time and the people and the faces and people that i know, or my parents know or friends know, everybody is e-mailing each other and going, you know, do you know so-and-so, or let's go and find out how such and such person is. it's really personal, even though the numbers are hard numbers going up. >> that's a great reminder that we say these numbers but it's not about saw 'ttatistics, but about people. i am sorry you are feeling it on such a personal level, too. we know five hostages were

released and do we know why they were released and what authorities learned from those five? >> reporter: we don't have any information on why them. there is an area over at another section where the red cross is set up, and also the hostages coming out are getting debriefed there as well as another mall across from me, and they are trying to get as much information as possible, and right now we don't have that information from them except the drama of the bullets and the blood and the chaos and having a cup of coffee and seeing somebody get gunned down and hiding in a bank fault or under a trolly in a grocery, and the president of the country's own nephew was killed and his sister was there with the family having coffee at the cafe, and listen to what the president said. >> we have overcome terrorists

attacks before. in fact, we have fought courageously and defeated them within and outside our borders. we will defeat them again. terrorism in and of itself is the philosophy of cowards. the way we lead our lives in freedom, openness, unity and consideration for each other represents our victory over those which are ill. >> we think they are cowards, and they think they are heroes. al shabab is communicating with the contacts outside, putting stuff on twitter saying it's a revenge attack for kenyan forces that have been present in somalia, and this is something that the fragile nation of kenya can't bear, and they made it clear no matter how many times the kenyan government wants to

ask for negotiations there will not be negotiations. >> something that raised eyebrows in the last hour, one of the hostage takers may be a white female, and it may be a white female that authorities have been looking for for quite some time. what do you know about that? >> reporter: we asked the government spokesperson about this record and they heard that as well, and intelligence was shifting through the individual. the name would be samantha hraot weight. this is somebody that is connected with al qaeda, and has really played a significant role. she is the wife of a 77 bomber, and the international security forces have been looking for her as a critical player in global terrorism. she may or may not be here, we

don't know. this is some of the questions being asked this morning. >> thank you so much for giving us the update. we will be checking in with her all morning. >> the upscale mall, by the way, is popular for westerners who live there, and for that reason it was warned westgate would be an easy target for terrorists. >> we were warned two years ago when al shabab -- there was intelligence al shabab would target this. there was heightened security in the inferenentrances, and at ti security has not been as high as it was, and maybe two years ago i thought the government would say that a terrorists attack of this level is not something that they could have anticipated, but it looks like probably they did

respond speedily and hard. al shabab is a group that maybe you have not heard a lot about, but it's linked to al qaeda, a group you probably have heard a lot about. the two groups don't always see eye to eye. >> they formed back in the mid-2000s, and al qaeda decided to recognize them so they have a bond there. it ebbs and flows. there has been a lot of infighting in the group. it's a very disorganized group and that makes them dangerous. they don't normally go for the global jihad, and in going after the attack in kenya, they are going after the interests in somalia, because kenya is on the forefront of going after shabab, and they are helping the government and taking matters in their own hands.

stow elshabab is striking back. the major question here now is is al shabab a threat to the u.s.? joining us to answer that question from washington, cnn washington security analyst. peter, the views of this group, have they ever tried to attack u.s. interests here or abroad? paint the picture here for people that don't know a lot about al shabab? >> the short answer is not yet. they have recruited a number of americans, the house homeland security committee did a report in 2011 pointing out they recruited 40 americans, and 20 from minnesota. they recruited americans, and whether the americans have been killed or acted as suicide bombers, and they tried to attack in the west before, and they tried to kill a danish

cartoonist that had drawn a cartoon of the profit, muhammad. and then a somali man affiliated with al shabab tried to kill the danish cartoonist. they have not tried to attack outside of somalia, but they have mounted attacks in neighboring countries, and people were watching a soccer match were attacked. and now uganda and kenya both provided armed forces to go into somalia to help fight against al shabab. >> peter, i think what a lot of people, certainly i found astonishing yesterday, the group was tweeting real time during the attack in nairobi. what can you tell us about the

sophistication of the group? >> they are on twitter all the time, and it's related to the fact that they have been able to recruit a number of westerners in particular, somebody that is well known as a guy that grew up in alabama, a baptist converted to islam, and he is constantly been on twitter, and he was likely killed earlier this month, but the fact that the group has been communicating on twitter may be surprising to many viewers, but if you are following it, that's the way they communicate. >> so when we first started talking about this group, it was released they were on somali origin, and the mind's eye imagines one type of version, and we learned from sources in kenya that possibly there is a white female one of the hostage takers, and possibly it's the white widow, samantha hraot

weight. >> we don't know for a fact. typically these tkpraogroups ar massage northwest. their view is the woman should be in a home and shrouded in a body veil. it would be very unusual for a woman to be involved in one of these operations. what the operation reminds me of the mumbai attacks where you recruit 10 gunman willing to die and they know they are going to the fight with the strong likelihood that they will die. they conduct the operation over several days in order to maximize media coverage, which they are getting, and the fact that they are not negotiating speaks for itself.

they want to kill as many people, and they want to make this operation go on for as long as possible. >> we're beyond 24 hours since this started on saturday. peter joining us from washington. thank you for that. there was a blog posting that the white widow, as she was called, she wrote and talked about the group, and she writes yes, i am a woman, but i am a woman that believes in jihad and supremacy of islam. quite possibly was she involved in this? was she used because she would not have been detected as somebody that was thrown in the group. >> yeah, she would have thrown people off if they were looking for a certain type of person. >> yeah, and also still to come on "new day," the flooding in colorado. it ruined homes and roads and

solarplex and takes the air out of you. >> reporter: to understand why, you need to take a drive. this right here is the biggest problem. roads like this one completely caved in. look at the chunks of concrete in there. this is a major artery and it's preventing folks from getting into the town and spending money and it could be like this for many months. there is no timetable for the major highway repairs. it's not as convenient and not yet known how many people will use it. >> some of the marginal businesses, it might be enough to push them over the edge. >> julie says there is no place she would rather live despite the hardship. >> a lot of people can say they live in the wonderful community, and we have both. >> a community that will come back, but the question is when. the key is getting the roads repaired. business owners know it's going to be slow going. more than 40% of the jobs

coming through the walls and floor and ceiling and would not go away. even though he had not seen anybody specifically, alexis told the police believes the harassers were two men and a woman. he would not tell the police what the voices were saying, however. >> what do believe do with that sort of information? what did they do? refer him for a men rul evaluation? >> no, that's the big question. the police reported the incident to the on duty office at the naval station where he worked alerting them that one of their contractors was behaving strangely. nobody showed up to question him. it fell by the way side, and they won't comment.

maybe we are trying to find answers from a tragedy like this. doc, thanks for joining us. you have been talking about the topics, and you eluded that people just don't snap in a situation like that. looking back, it appears there were warning signs with aaron alexis, and people might have missed them to a point where he kept the security clearance, and he got a gun, and seems like we see that again and again, and the national psychy hit hard over the last year, but that's the story, somebody got a gun and mass tragedy occurs. how does it happen and they fall through the cracks? >> here is the difficult dilemma we find ourselves in in terms of predictive questions. folks will contemplate a mass killing for sometime, and when they share the idea with others

they have not necessarily determined to do so. you try to commit somebody like that to a hospital, you might be able to commit them, but you are not necessarily going to be able to commit them indefinitely, because they know what to say, and they have not determined that they are going to do it. once the mass killer determines that he is going to embark, and he figure ra figuratively light. he doesn't fall into the cracks, hey crawls into the cracks because he knows he will be stopped and he is determined that you, as a physician, and the family members are not going to take it away from him. >> i want to get back to the issue of sigma. i wonder if it has relevance here. let's listen to francona. >> anytime you talk about mental health that races flags and cautions because if you as a

security office or you as a supervisor bring this to the attention of the security people then they refer him to a mental health review and that for several career fields is a career ending event. >> what he seemed to be saying, there was an interesting sort of not representing everything about aaron alexis, because by doing that, it would be a career ender. so that was part of the problem here. what do you think of that? >> the toll of folks who are labeling with psychiatric problems right now in the military is so huge, and it's required such a great sensitivity to folks that i think that there may be some truth to a person's perception of whether it will damage his military career, but the reality is what i see in my experience of the military is the doctors are very sensitive, and they wanted to try and patch people up and make them better rather

>> joining me now from chicago is emily oster. thank you to the program. >> thank you for having me. >> i think about this topic as a father, and as a doctor, both. you know, it's an intriguing book you have written here. when you talk about alcohol, first of all, i think that got a lot of peoples' attention. you said women should be comfortable with one or two drinks in the first trimester. what do you think people will take away from what you have written in this book? >> what pushed me to do the research, there's a lot of disagreement in practice. many aub sta people, what i am o show them, this is what the evidence says. the evidence in some ways speaks

for itself. many women will read it, and maybe i won't have a drink but when you look at the evidence on the out comes for children that women who drink in moderation, they don't look different than those who didn't. >> but the risk is there, so why take it? >> yeah, many women do take that approach, and we take that approach in many things. we are talking about alcohol. but there are many things in pregnancy that we don't have perfect evidence on, and people ae srl wait the evidence for themselves and try to think about the right risk, and really all that i am trying to do here is really to show women, here is what the evidence is and why don't you think about some of the decisions for yourself. >> and finally, the idea of mitigating risks. i wear my seat belt every day,

and it's not likely i can get in a wreck and be injured, but it could. do you wur krae at all that this could send the wrong message, it's okay to do things that might carry even a little bit of risk. >> one thing we have to recognize is we are always taking risks all the time, and things we don't even think about, like every time you get in the car and go on the highway, we know that's risky, and a lot of people are doing is taking risks. what is the benefit and how do i wait? we need to recognize we are thinking about the choices all the time whether or not we consciously accepted it, and there are some situations in which we have not thought about it exclusively, but we should. >> and my mom said we have been

safety in high school sports. it's a big topic. it's because of incidents in part like the one we're about to show you that the tragic death of a high school football player in new york. a new york school is mourning the death of one of the students after a fatal injury during a football game last friday.

16-year-old damon james, a junior on the varsity football team took a direct hit to the head during the third quarter of the game. he was knocked unconscious and then immediately taken to a nearby hospital. three days later, at women and children's hospital in buffalo, he died from his injuries. it was the third death of a high school athlete in new york in as many years. >> the kids are supporting each other. our staff is supporting the kids. the kids are supporting the staff. and we do have counsellors, you know, in and around the school. >> helmet to helmet hits have been banned in all levels of football from pee-wee to nfl but they still happen. goldson was fined $30,000 for hitting an opponent with his helmet. it comes a day after another high school junior died in georgia when he fractured a vertebrae during a scrimmage.

now it's worth pointing out it's unclear whether thinks death was caused by a concussion or injury to the spinal cord or a bleed on the brain. but no matter the cause, it's a sad story. as a parent, my first question is what can i learn from this? what can i do to make sure it doesn't happen to my own child? i want to give you a few tips i learned over the years in "chasing life." if your child isn't that hot on playing football to begin with, don't force them. but if they are set on it, talk to the coaches, talk to the trainers, make sure they're taking very appropriate on field safety seriously. ask about getting baseline concussion testing for your child in case of a concussion. that's also to help ensure they don't return to play until they cleared that testing. for you at home, keep an eye out for any signs of a head injury. headaches, changes in mood or behavior, withdrawing from families and friends, anxiety, forgetfulness. i know this might mean more malaise than the average teenager and some of the signs are vague, but it's important to

hostages. this is according to kenya. >> zane, can you give us the latest? what is happening there now? >> reporter: it's really crazy to be in the area in which i live which is pretty much out this gate and to the right and see ambulances behind me, a triage center that the red cross center put up and parra military forces and trucks all around me. basically, the situation at west gate right now is that the siege continues. it's not clear exactly where the hostages are. and also what their condition is. we did speak to some officials who are about 30 hostages. 10 to 15 gunmen unclear too what their condition is. we understand that the kenyan security forces and international counterparts are work together closely. this is nothing new. they do a lot of different security areas.

just counter-terrorism stuff, sharing intelligence. they have been working closely. and typically with the british, the israelis and with the united states. >> any details on a motive? >> reporter: well, they've been pretty clear. they said in the past that they want revenge attack on kenyans partly because the kenyans troops are inside somalia fighting. they took a crucial town. this is really important to al shabab this place. this is where they raise all the taxes and get a lot of money out of the goods and services that go through here. and that money is used to fund the town. kenya being there under the african union banner, it is a huge problem. so they're saying this is a strike back. but they're also very anti-western. they don't want any kind of foreigner or westerner in somalia or involved at all. they want a shah rea state. and that's the overall motive.

but specifically at westgate, they want to prove that they can strike in this way in a way outside somalia that they have never been able to do before. so it's a whole new ball game at this level. >> stretching beyond 25 hours now. we'll check back. thank you. secretary of state john kerry calls the attack there an unspeakable evil. he released a statement that says, "attacks like this can't change who we are. a people committed to peace and justice for all. but rather must reaffirm our determination to counter extremist and promote tolerance." if you haven't heard of this mill tanlt group before, here is some information. it is based in sow mall why and has connections to al qaeda. it is considered a terrorist group since 2008. the main mission is to turn somalia into a fundamentalist state.

al-shabaab has raised tens of millions of dollars through extortion and illegal tax schemes, fees they levy. the group is believed to have the most american members of any terror group. a government report estimates 40 americans have joined al-shabaab over the last now years. nearly half of them from the somali community in minnesota. even though the mall massacre in kenya happened half way aren't world, there is a central question that we're asking, could it happen on american soil? >> yeah, how vulnerable are we. so what are have you learned about how secure our malls are and other soft targets here? >> we've seen these attacks overseas on civilians in very public areas. we saw it in madrid in '04 and in '05. that raises questions whether or not this could happen here at

home. >> reporter: it may be more than 7,000 miles from kenya to the united states, but the mall massacre couldn't bring a tragedy any closer to home. this washington, d.c. resident was in the mall. >> i just waited in the stairwell for an hour and a half. there were two individuals with me that had superficial gunshot wounds. individuals in the stairwell with me. they were not with me. but there was about probably, i don't know, 60 of us. there were a few floors worth of people. >> reporter: the attacks on the soft targets raises questions about mall security on u.s. soil. could what happen oversea happen here? >> soft targets are attractive because they're not defended. it's very effective way of causing a lot of panic, a lot of damage very quickly and achieving objective of terrorizing people. >> reporter: in this country, one maltha puts security front

and center is mall of america. one of the largest enclosed shopping centers in the country, visited by 42 million people a year. it has something many government facility do not. >> this is a drill. mall of america is now going into lockdown. >> twice a month without fail, the tenants and customers participate in a lockdown drill. practicing how to shelter in back rooms of stores to try to prevent casualties in an attack. >> if something bad should happen here, we don't want our response to start with law enforcement will be here and protect you. we want to know what can be done until last can get here. >> even with heightened security and awareness of your surroundings may be your best defense. >> for the average american citizen, you go to the grocery store. you go to the gas station. you go to the shopping mall. you go it a movie theater. you take walks in your

neighborhood. any one of those situations could make you vulnerable if other people or another person is out there determined to conduct an attack. >> now he also went oto say you could just be in the wrong place at the wrong time. another security analyst said the only thing the public can do is strengthen our resolve. >> we're using this term soft target. i want to make sure everyone knows what we're talking about. clear up for us the difference between a soft target and a hard target. >> victor, a hard target is something that the average person doesn't have access to. things like military bases or the white house or the airport when you go through that security clearance check, all those long lines and once you're in there, that's a hard target area. the soft target area is the outside part of the airport, where people are checking in. it's places like that and molz

memorial for victim of the navy yard shooting in washington. last night he addressed the recent shooting in his hometown of chicago. >> and a president and first lady were at a foundation gala in d.c. the president used the opportunity to renew the call for stricter gun control measures. >> we fought a good fight earlier this year. we came up short. and that means with we got to get back up and go back at it because as long as there are those who fight to make it as easy as possible for dangerous people to get their hands on guns, then we have to work as hard as possible for the sake of our children. we have to be willing to do more work to make it harder. >> the president also blasted republicans for, as he called it, governing by crisis over the possible government shutdown and attempt to defund obama care.

>> meanwhile, hillary clinton back in the spotlight with a new interview in new york magazine. it's still a few years until the next presidential primary. a lot of people are talking about another run perhaps? >> it seems like she stepped out of the spotlight just for like a couple of days and now she's back in. aaron, every time we hear from her, there are people in the room are asking, so is this the announcement? are we going to hear it now? >> that's right. victor, i'm sure we're not going to hear that she's running in this interview that is posting here in about 45 minutes at 9:00 on new york magazine's website. but it's never too early to start speculating. of course, just several years ago she said absolutely not she wasn't going to run again in 2016. but now we're not so sure.

grab your coffee and breakfast. sit back and relax. we'll let you know what is going on in the world. >> we'll start with five things you need to know for your new day. the death toll at the mall in kenya jum topped 59 this morning. between 10 and 15 terrorists were involved in the attack at westgate mall. some are still inside. they have 30 hostages this morning. that's according to kenyan and western diplomatic sources. >> number two, more than 61 people are dead after a suicide bomber blew himself up outside of a church in pakistan. a hospital official tells cnn more than 120 people were injured and witnesses say some of the victims are children. no group has claimed responsibility for that attack. >> number three, president obama will speak at a memorial today for the victims of last week's navy yard shooting. the service will be held at the u.s. marine barracks in

washington, d.c., on monday. 12 people were killed after a former navy reservist began shooting at random, it seems, inside the navy yard. >> and number four, hong kong is readying for a major storm this morning. thousands of people have been evacuated as typhoon usagi gets set to hit the coastline. french officials found, look at this 1.3 tons of pure cocaine hidden inside 30 colorful suitcases traveling from venezuela to france. street value, $270 million. okay. i want to get more chilling details for you on that terror attack at a mall in kenya. earlier today i talked to a "new york times" journalist who witnessed that carnage. >> yeah, his name is tyler hicks. he went into the mall after the shooting as people were filing out. he started there taking pictures of the scene. listen to this conversation.

>> i'm close by to westgate mall when the violence broke out yesterday. and as i approached the mall, you could see lots of people running away. as i got closer, i was clear that there were people who had been shot. i saw people shot in the stomach and the leg. dozens of injuries streaming out among just terrified civilians. i continued to move along carefully along the front of the mall where i saw three men who had been killed just at the front entrance of the mall. one of them still inside the car he had been driving. and continue to proceed up and into an upper parking garage where i again saw more people sfre streaming out. the police and army were desperately working to get people evacuated out of the

building. i saw this as an opportunity to get inside to go against the flow of the people and into the mall and to see what was going on inside. that's really where we got a real sense of how bad things were. even after being there an hour, hour and a half, two hours, people continued to suddenly come out of shops. they barricaded themselves inside by locking the doors or by pulling the metal gates down in front of the store front windows. every 15 or 20 minutes suddenly you would see 20, 30, 50, 100 people would come out of another place. even though they could hear there were people outside, they couldn't really tell who -- if that was the police or the army. they were just petrified and

staying low. that is really the right thing to do. >> can you imagine the people in the stores? they lock themselves away hoping it ends soon. shopping malls, shopping centers, they're known as soft targets in security lingo. >> big crowds inside large buildings but how do you secure them with the constant in and out of traffic and of shoppers and a place that you're supposed to be able to just go. >> let's get answers this morning from robert mckree. he is a professor of security management at john j. college of criminal justice. professor, good to have you. i want to first talk about the differences between what we've already talked about this morning, the shooting in oregon in 2012 and what we're sneeg ni ro seeing in nairobi and the approach. >> there are enormous differences. the context is different. one is east africa and where

there are islamists, al-shabaab seeking to overthrow the government and this is the united states of america. the mall security issues are quite different. in this country, you should shop until you drop but not drop from a bullet, but drop from exhaustion. it is still safe here. >> but is there any practical way, you know, to keep terrorists out of a mall if the whole point is, you know, open access for customers. come on in. spend time with us. what practically can you do? >> yes. actually malls have limited accesses. access control can be alert. there can be the sense of watching people coming in who don't fit the profile of usual

customers. but the thing to remember is the result of the horrific issues, these horrific pictures that "the new york times" photographer has produced, it's going to create some pressure on mall security in this country as well to make sure that there are evacuation procedures that have been tested, that there are lockdown procedures that there is coordination with police and other special resources to keep the places safe. >> so there is a shooter in the mall, whether the person is there for political reasons or mental health reasons. you're a professor of security management. look at the average mall in the u.s. and give me a tick through list of what you would change to keep that shooter out if there are things you can do.

>> it's a matter of watching the exterior. whether are the characteristics? are they dressed differently? do they act differently? and right at that point, we have good communications with malls. security should be trained to deal with this unlikely event. but we had mall shootings in this country as well. they are rare. nonetheless, malls have to be prepared for them. >> all right. robert mckree, professor of security management at john j. college. you always have to be prepared. thank you so much for your insight this morning. >> thank you. in a nearly unprecedented move, a college football game was such a crushing blowout. >> i feel so bad for -- >> that team said, you know what?

speeches, setting goals. the general assembly is also known for pretty heated, awkward moments. >> let's take this one. last year when israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu used a cartoon bomb to call for red line on iran's nuclear program. how about 2011 when the delegates walked out of the general assembly there during iranian president ahmadinejad's fiery speech against the u.s., israel and europe. i think they walked out more than once in history. >> yeah. so we want to get a preview of this year's general assembly. and we have cnn's ivan watson for that. ivan, good to see you. what's on the agenda? >> hard to know what surprises the heads of state will have for thus week. but already the leaders are starting to pour in. i was walking down the street a few blocks from the bureau yesterday and suddenly everybody around me was speaking turkish because the turkish president was arriving at his hotel. lots of plain clothes and security officers in turkey.

there are 1300 of their own civilians with chemical weapons. the russian foreign minister being quoted on his website accusing the u.s. of blackmail, arguing that the u.s. is threatening to pull out of a recent agreement between russia and the u.s. on disarming the arsenal of chemical weapons if russia doesn't agree to sign on to a united nations security council. they're threatening the use of force if syria doesn't completely comply with disarmament. so the russians taking more stabs at the u.s. though sur guy lovelet also suggested that russia is willing to send perhaps troops or military police to help protect any disarmament experts that

eventually could get on the ground in syria to remove that deadly arsenal of chemical weapons. there is a conversation between the new president of iran and president obama. we'll see if that happens. ivan watson, thank you so much. this week -- former president bill clinton caused a little buzz when he told cnn he did not know if his wife plans to make another bid for the white house in 2016. >> come on, he doesn't know? >> that's what he said. >> all right. people are certainly asking whether hillary clinton is, in fact, planning a run for president. >> listen to what house minority leader nancy pelosi said about her when she sat down with candy crowley. >> she has has experience as a senator, as a secretary of state, as a first lady herself with participating the way she

did. certainly with all due respect to our president and i think he's magnificent and wonderful and a blessing to us, but certainly more prepared than president obama, certainly more prepared than president bush. certainly more prepared than president clinton. >> candy joins us from washington. candy, in the latest cnn poll, hillary clinton has a 65% advantage against the other possible contenders? which politician would walk away from that? >> anyone that had been in the limelight and hasn't always been a kind limelight and one who, by the way, was seen as a sure bet the last time around and was beaten by a senator who had been a u.s. senator for two years. so there were a lot of tales. she's well aware of them. but there is that bold history, that whole -- you heard some of

theater in los angeles. kim, good to see you today. i have to ask you, you know breaking bad is one of the most talked about series right now. but is that going to translate to a win tonight, do you think? >> this is the show, obviously, that has all the buzz. this is what everyone is talking about. it did benefit from the fact it was starting the final episodes just as the ballots were going out for the emmys. even though people love homeland, even though there's a lot of other shows out there, that could potentially get this house of cards. the whole netflix affect. i think breaking bad does have that momentum. people are talking about it. >> let's talk about the category for best actor. kevin stacy in house of cards is phenomenal. do you think it will get as many awards as it's been nome natured

for? >> i really think there is that "breaking bad" jugger not right now. i think this has the momentum. i think ryan kranston does get it. of course "homeland," you still have the dalon lewis factor. he did win last year. i think because people are talking about "breaking bad" so much, i think that brian kranson gets it. yeah, kevin stacy, he is a big movie star. nominated for an emmy award. emmys like it when movie stars are nominated for emmys. that can also play in kevin spacey's factor. he is also great in "house of cards." maybe the academy kind of wants to send a message that tv is changing with "house of cards" and the whole netflix effect. this is a wild card effect. i think he gets best actor. >> as you talk about netflix and making the major strides, first time emer, of course, do you really think "house of cards," do you think that's going to walk away with the whole

shabang? >> it would show that the tv industry is changing. i think that's already been proven. i think people know tv is changing. i you this you're seeing that effect in all of the nominated shows. really because "breaking bad" even, because of the people talking about it, i think part of it is because of the netflix effect with that. people that didn't watch "breaking bad" initially caught up. in a way, if "house of cards" loses to "breaking bad," it is almost their fault. they put "breaking bad on netflix. people were able to catch up with that. i think tv changed. i think this year's emmy awards are showing that completely. >> i have to ask you about carrie washington. >> he just wants to talk about carrie washington. >> i'm not shy about my love -- but thursday nights 10:00 eastern, i was catching "scandals." do you think history in some way, her being the first african-american woman to be nominated for outstanding lead

actress in a drama in 16, 18 years, will history play a role in the votes for that award? >> you know, yes, obviously if she won. she would be the first african-american to win best actress. but i also think she is so good in the show. you are not the only person gathered around your tv to watch "candlelight." everyone loves this show. it is great. she is so good in it. you can't even imagine the show without carry washington starring in it. i think she gets it, for sure. it will be a nice history making thing as well. >> and a special tribute to actor corey martise tonight? >> yeah. they always have that segment. every award show does it. but this year what they're doing, they're doing something different. they're taking a few different people and giving them kind of elevated memorial segments. corey montif is one of the people getting this. there are a lot of people are saying is this really the right thing to do? is
