>> well, this really took officials by surprise that the americans could be involved in all of this. they were very concerned about recruitment by the group al shabaab, particularly in minnesota but also in skst kst and other areas. they're trying to match-up the names but officials are telling me that they are becoming some. in the meantime, they're trying to get all assistance.

>> how tiekt are their with al-qaida? >> in february, 2012,they formally merge ds with al-qaida. that just means that they're in constant communication. it's how thaw identify themselves. they tried to kill with al shabaab, a danish cartoonist in denl mark, drawing a cartoon that many found offensive to the prophet, muhammad. they had done operations in uganda killing 70 people in 2010. you know, i thaef shown no ability or, for the moment, of being able to attack in the west other than the botched attack to kill this cartoonist in denmark. we appreciate you giving us that perspective.

now, we may have some developments on the hostages who were taken yesterday in that shopping mall. nima elbagar is outside and, nima, a few minutes ago, we got some reports about a hostage rescue operation. do you have information about that that you can expand for us? >> absolutely. after an extraordinary 36 hours on the ground, the kenyan military as much as says they have now successfully rescued most of those hostages. they say that there's finally resolution in site. they believe that in the very, very near future, minute, even, we could be hearing that this attack could finally be coming to a close. this, as you can imagine, for the family, is a bit of a waste.

this attack was carried out, if you can imagine, while a children's cooking competition was being held. and these attackers came in, ready to fight, guns blazing. we're already hearing the family haves been contacted. kenyaan authorities hopeful that they've been waiting the news, those that for many people, have begun to lose hope. >> could you describe this mall for us? just to give our viewers a sense of what this is? maybe perhaps the restaurants or the stores. just so peej get a sense of what it means with these hostages and this attack being a mall.

they were always smiling giving hugs to his 10 grandchildren. these are not statistics. they are the lives that have been taken from us. a husband has lost his wife. wives have lost their husbands. sons and daughters have lost their moms and dads. hundreds in our communities have lost a neighbor. thousands here have lost a friend. as has been mentioned for one

family, the daniel's family, old wounds are ripped open again. pris cil la has lost arthur, as mayor grey indicates. i can't believe this is happening again. these families have endured a shaterring tragedy. it ought to be a shock for all of us. it ought to upset us. it ought to lead to some sort of transformation. that's what happened in other countries when they experienced similar tragedies. they you could that there was

nothing ordinary about this kind of carnage. they endured great heartbreak, but they also immobilized and change d. the mass shootings became a great rarity. and yet here in the united states, after the heartbreaking interviews with families, after all speeches and all the commentary, nothing happens. a long side the anguish of these american families, alongside the accumulated out reach many of these feel, sometimes i feel there's a creeping rez ig thags. that these tragedies are just somehow the way it is.

that this is somehow the new norm. we can't accept this. there's nothing normal about our children dying in the streets from stray bullets. no other vanszed nation endures this kind of violence. none. if you're in america, the murder rate is tree times what it is in other nations. the murder rate with guns is ten times what it is with other developed nations.

it falls upon us to make a difference. sometimes it takes an undppted voice to breakthrough. to help remind us what we need know to be true. we heard one of those voices last week. she spoke as somebody who sees daily and nightly, the awful carnage of so much violence. we are a great country, but there's something wrong. all of these shootings, all of these victims, this is thot america.

we have to work together to dpet rid of this. that's the wisdom we should be taking away from this. i'm not accepting this as inevitable, but asking what could we do to prevent them from happening again and dpen and again. i've said before, we cannot stop every act of senseless violence. we can not know every evil that lurks in troubled minds. but if we can prevent one, surely we've got an obligation to try. it's true that each of the tragedies i've mentioned that we need to do a better job.

as commander in chief, i've ordered changes up and down the chain. and that in those effortings, we don't stigmatize those who need help. those things are clear. we've got to move to address them. we americans are not inherently a more violent people than folks are in other countries. we're not inhrntly prone to mental hemt problems. the main difference that sets our nation apart is that we don't do enough to keep guns out
