get hurt, marn. -- man. >> okay. so who is going to fix this? the city is broke and also run by people who drink poison with ther, and while the state of michigan gave flint millions of dollars to fix their water infrastructure, state of texas hasn't stepped up for ranger yet. and the federal government, well, president trump made scott pruitt the new heads of the epa. pruitt previously killed an environmental protection unit that investigated water contamination, basically pruitt running the epa is like pablo escobar running the dea. so residents like bill brisker aren't really crossing their fingers. >> how are they doing in flint? do you know? >> i think that the people are going to be forgot enlike a lot of other things, you know, in this i c. and it's not just us, it's tons antons of other cities t is a mess. >> yeah, it say nationwide mess. there are places like ranger all over the country where safe drinking waterlogs are being

welcome to the show. >> thank you for having me. >> so as we all saw in the piece before the break, flint, michigan, really is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to contaminated water in the u.s. you were one of the people who helped uncover the problems in flint and then you asked to help with the problem afterwards, which is a strange thing. but what can be done to help at this stage? >> in flint, michigan, it's now become the best monitor and one of the best run systems in the country. and so as a result the water is comparable to other cities in the united states. but ironically, flint is still paying the highest water rates in the world and after this water is safe to drink in the next five years, it is projected to double. so they won't be able to afford in many cases to purchase the water any more. >> if people can't afford to purchase the water and if people

can't afford to investigate the water, then is it up to people like you to go around america testing the water to see if it's safe to drink? >> i'm ashamed to say that that is the current case, that we were part of a team at virginia tech with outsiders and flint residents exposed to flint water crisis. and unfortunately that's not the first disaster that we have exposed in the united states. >> so if we look at it now, i mean, it seems like it's all doom and gloom. everyone focused on flint, flint really became the cat list for what the conversation was. but you look at other places, you know, like ranger texas, where you say residents there don't have the money, counsel il doesn't have the money. who is supposed to fix the problem, then? >> well, unfortunately, if you live in poor towns and cities in the united states right now, the reality is that you get the water you can afford. and if that water does not meet federal safety standards or is not seussable for bathing or

showering, that is just your tough luck. what is even worse in many of these towns we're not telling people that the water is not safe, like with michigan we had to show neighborhoods of children with elevated blood lead, 12 people died from legion airs disease before anything was done and state and federal money was mobilized to help give flint the water it deserves, safe water. >> trevor: that is helping to people and the government can't help, than what can people do for themselves? because they have to do something? >> well, aside from getting on "the daily show," town by town, city by city and being embarrassed to the point where the state and federal government step in, we as a society have to start thinking what kind of country we want to live in. if you are judged by how you treat your most vulnerable and frankly in ranger, texas, flint, michigan, we don't look scre good. so we have to figure out a way to get state and federal money to allow these towns to at least enjoy the same basic level of

civilization that the rest of us take for granted. but if poll titionzs say that funding amounts to a trillion dollars because there are so many lead pipes in maryblg, where does america find a trillion dollars? >> well, where could we find 600 million dollars to help flint out of its water disaster. we've had to pay 600 million for health problems associated with that. and all of this could have been avoided for a hundred dollars a day of corose inhibbitier. but maybe a hundred million dollars of pipe replacement. >> trevor: when you look at thrksz you work in the world of water and contamination, do you ever find it strange that water bottling companies get to purchase water for cheaper than many americans are buying it from the same government for? >> it is absolutely horrifying to see that our poorest americans in these cities where they have lost a lot of their population, they are paying the heightest water rates in the world for the worst water. and this is something, you know, we just-- we can't tolerate it any more.
