( laughter ) kushner says what he did is nothing like what hillary clinton did and he'll explain the whole thing in his new book "what took place." ( laughter ) but let's move on to the story that's been blowing up your feed all weekend. friday night president trump went to alabama to campaign for republican senate candidate, although i don't remember the candidate's name or anything about him because, instead, trump decided to attack the n.f.l. >> today, if you hit too hard, right, if they hit too hard, 15 yards! three him out of the game! they had that last week. i watched a couple of minutes. two guys, really, beautiful tackle. boom! 15 yards! the referee gets on television, his wife sitting at home so proud of him, they're ruining the game!

( laughter ) >> trevor: forget being president, what kind of a human being wants more brain damage? how can one person be on the wrong side of everything in history? ( laughter ) i'm just waiting. ( cheers and applause ) i'm just waiting for trump to be, like, what's with all these seat belts, folks? ( laughter ) i remember a time when people weren't afraid to go through the windshield head first -- head first, dust yourself off, shake hands and do it again. ( cheers and applause ) what are you talking about? and also, who is donald trump to say that football is too soft? really? you play golf, a sport where the biggest danger is when you aren't even playing. barely registered in the news because all of trump's speeches are basically like gas station bathrooms. you can only really complain about one thing at a time. yeah, i know the sink's broken but i'm more concerned about the dead body in the stall next to mine, that's the issue. ( laughter ) for most people, the most outrageous thing was what the president said next. >> you see those people taking the knee when they're playing our great national anthem -- ( audience reacts ) -- wouldn't you love to see one of these n.f.l. owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say get that son of a bitch all the field right now, out, he's fired. he's fired! ( cheers and applause ) >> trevor: i like how he remembered it was his catch phrase only after he'd said it. ( laughter ) he's fared -- oh, wait. he's fired! ( laughter ) all right, so just so we're on the same page, when nazis were

protesting in charlottesville, trump said, some of these were very fine people, very fine people, and aren't we all nazis, really? aren't we all, huh? in some way, huh? but then when black football players protest peacefully by taking a knee during the anthem he calls them sons of bitches that should be fired? i don't know if trump is racist but i definitely know he prefers white people to black people. i can say that with confidence. ( applause ) if donald trump's greatest concern is the disrespecting of the american flag, do you know what should piss him off? the confed rat flag, that's basically like waving a picture of your ex around and your girlfriend says, that's really disrespectful to me! and you say, oh, this has nothing to do with you, i'm just

honoring my heritage and also i'm building a monument of susan on the front lawn. ( laughter ) on the one hand you have sons of bitches and on the other hand the president of the united states saying a private citizen should be fired for expressing an opinion that the president doesn't like, which sounds very dictator-y to me. when trump tells the n.f.l. owners you should fire these players, if they don't fire the players they're basically going against the president, right? and if the players take a knee, now they're going against the president. but you realize until this weekend, the knee had nothing to do with the president. nothing at all to do with trump! ( applause ) at all! collin kaepernick started kneeling back when obama was in office. this had nothing to do with donald trump. luckily, to the n.f.l.'s credit, they stood up to the bully in chief. >> the president versus the players. hundreds of athletes sending a message to president trump.

>> from coast to coast, even in london, players sending that message to the president from the football field linking arms like patriots quarterback tom brady, some kneeling, raising fists. >> the majority of football players choosing to stay in the locker room till after the anthem was over. some singers taking a knee along with players. >> owners throwing support behind their teams, from 18 teams during the anthem side by side with their players. >> trevor: okay, hold up. ( laughter ) who the hell is that with the mustache? i didn't know you could make enough money in vaudeville to buy a football team. a lieutenant of money. ( laughter ) it was important that the weekend's protests included not just the n.f.l. players but the owners, too. when you think about how powerful this is, a lot of these owners supported donald trump. so you know it hurts him to see

him seeing the players take the side in the standoff. also makes the easiest where's waldo. try to figure out who pays the other people to play. who do you think is not playing? who's paying? ( laughter ) after america's most popular sport turned on the commander-in-chief, he doubled down. >> when you get on your knee and you don't respect the american flag or the anthem, that's not being treated with respect. this has knot dog with race. i've never said anything about race. this has nothing to do with race or anything else. this has to do with respect for our country and respect for our flag. i think it's very disrespectful to our country. >> trevor: oh. first of all, nicely played. nicely played. but rest work through what president trump just said. these players aren't trying to disrespect the country. that's not what that is. they're trying to peacefully

protest police treatment of black people in america. if they wanted to disrespect the country, they wouldn't kneel silently. they'd do crazy things like insult gold star families or make fun of p.o.w.s like john mccain or say that america is morally equivalent to putin's russia, that's the kind of (bleep) they'd do if they were trying to disrespect the country. ( cheers and applause ) like, did you know that colin kaepernick used to sit on the bench during the anthem until a former n.f.l. player who is also a veteran nate boyer told kaepernick, look, man, there's a better way to do this. >> we sort of came to a middle ground where he would take a knee alongside his teammates. soldiers take a knee in front of a fallen brother's grave, you know, to show respect. he said i think that would be really powerful. >> trevor: yeah. so you see, kaepernick changed his protest to take a knee because, clearly, he does respect the troops, and still

president trump called him out in a way that he never did to the nazis in charlottesville. so, in my opinion, this has everything to do with race, and if you say it doesn't, i just think it's very disrespectful to the country. >> trevor: welcome back to "the daily show"! donald trump's beef with the n.f.l. has left a lot of people with a lot of questions. the question that has come up for me, once again, is when is the right time for black people to protest? everyone has a different answer. for me, it's right before lunch because that's when i'm hangry, right? after lunch i'm not effective. but if you want to know when black people should protest, go right to the source. treasury secretary steve mnuchin. >> i think what the president is saying is that the owner should have a rule that players should have to stand in respect for the national anthem. this isn't about democrats, it's not about republicans, it's not about race, it's not about free speech.

( laughter ) my words are trapped in a prison of teeth, errr! but, okay, fine. i hear what mnuchin is saying. he's not gips the players protesting, he just doesn't like it when they do it on the field when everyone's watching. yeah, do it somewhere else. could you imagine mnuchin giving that advise to rosa parks? hey, rosa, why are you protesting on the bus, huh? people have places to be! take the bus to your house, sit down on your couch and protest from home, boom! racism solved! hill criticizing the president on your twitter feed. that's a fireable offense, too, right? though i do understand where temperature is coming from because twitter is his workplace. it's a different thing. ( laughter ) but i get it, you do it not in public. here's another example, over the weekend stevie wonder took a knee on his own time in his own show, and even then, even then a former republican congressman tweeted, "stevie wonder takes a knee for the anthem during a concert, another ungrateful black multi-millionaire." ( audience reacts ) ungrateful to whom? i'm fascinated by that concept, ungrateful to whom? this idea black people should be grateful is some sneaky-rases racism, because when a white billionaire spends a year screaming america is in disaster, he's in touch with the country. but when a black man kneels quietly, he should be grateful

for the successes america has allowed him to have? how is that ungrateful? i don't understand. what would be ungrateful is if stevie wonder got his sight back and then started complaining about colors. that would be ungrateful. ( cheers and applause ) >> trevor: welcome back to the show, katy. >> thanks for having me back. >> trevor: congratulations on your book doing really well. it is, honestly, one of the craziest stories. you're not lying when you say front row seat to the craziest campaign in american history. this is a book about your journey, and it really is like a weird romantic story with no romance. ( laughter ) involving yourself and now president donald trump. >> that's the weirdest way anyone's described the book. >> trevor: i try my best.

>> i've heard a lot of descriptions and that is by far the weirdest way. >> trevor: when you read the story, it almost felt as if there was a strange connection between you and donald trump. >> i was there from the beginning. donald trump, i don't know if you remember, was not taken seriously when he announced his candidacy is that oh, we remember. ( laughter ) >> donald trump running for president, going to be so hilarious. >> trevor: right. >> people were calling him a carnival barker, a side "the daily show" and the like, and i was there almost from day one, from june 30th of 2015, i was the only national news correspondent that is following him full time, the only person really taking his campaign seriously. so he would see me for months on end as the only familiar face in a crowd full of strangers for months and months and months and months, and he would call me out over and over again, berate me from the stage when he didn't like my reporting which was often. ( laughter ) he would try to charm me behind

the scenes, or if i did something he liked or said something that he liked, one time he kissed me on the cheek. >> trevor: that story, i feel like you say now, and he kissed me on the cheek, but it wasn't like a welcomed kiss on the cheek. when you read the story in the book it really is a harrowing moment that for me reminded me of the access whoogd tape, the moment where donald trump got off the bus after the pussy grab, and then says i'm going to put in tic tacs because you never know sometimes i just kiss a woman and can't control it. you tell the story in a similar fashion, he kissed you out of mono where. >> this was many, many months before that, this was november 2015. i was on the morning joe set, a remote show we were doing from new hampshire, i was talking about trump's change in tone from the debate the previous night. he wasn't doing after people the same way he had been the previous week, not the same

amount of vitriol. i get off the stage, waiting for trump and team to arrive, he walks in the side door, sees me immediately, walks right up to me, puts his arms on my shoulders and kiss me on the cheek. if you kiss me on the cheek, trevor, that's fine, nice, we are essentially colleagues, i'm a guest on your show, you're not covering me as a journalist, i'm not running for president. >> trevor: you're telling me this now, i wasted an opportunity, but okay. ( laughter ) i went in with a hug, but okay. now you tell me, thanks, katy. >> it's inappropriate in that setting. it's not a social situation. it is not a -- i'm not a member of his family, i'm not his friend, i'm not somebody that he works with. i'm covering a presidential campaign, and i remember in that moment, the first thing i felt was nobody is going to take me seriously if anybody sees that. >> trevor: wow. >> luckily, the cameras weren't rolling, but a minute later donald trump is on set with joe and mika saying what happened to

katy? she was so great, i just had to kiss her on national television. >> trevor: he bragged about it immediately afterwards. there's a step that you have in the book that was really eye opening to me in talking about the evening broadcast, like, you know, the national news, and how donald trump got way more coverage than hillary clinton, but only 32 minutes was about policy. >> yes. >> trevor: i think in previous election years it was like 114 minutes and 200 minutes on policy, whereas donald trump was only 32 minutes. do you think that journalists could have done a better job of keeping it on policy or was trump the first person who was willing to risk scandalizing the entire election and getting it away from that conversation? >> donald trump had no policy. there wasn't policy to cover with him. it was very limited. >> trevor: right. >> he had a muslim ban proposal, and he had a tax plan, a pseudo tax plan, but he didn't really get into policy on the campaign trail, and whenever he did he would immediately bury it with another controversy or getting into some sort of personal fight with ted cruz or

hillary clinton or marco rubio or ben carson or the pope or the podium in the oval office. ( laughter ) i mean, the list goes on and on. so would i have liked to have covered more policy? absolutely! but he was making it really difficult to do so. i wanted to talk and put donald trump supporters on tv every night on nbc nightly news but the man kept saying things we could not ignore. he's fighting with a gold star family, you can't ignore that. he's calling on russia to hack into hillary clinton's email, you can't ignore that. it was one after the other after the other. looking back, though, and really, you know, analyzing how we covered this campaign, i think it's is discussion that we have to have to figure out how in the world we're going to cover 2020, especially if donald trump is the republican candidate. >> trevor: this book is one of the most insightful. it's an amazing journey you took on the road with donald trump, the most romantic-unrough pantic
