yeah. and i understand why people were loving this moment, an american woman ran a race in november and won. wow. yeah. doesn't that feel good? what was even more impressive was that james comey tried to tackle her right before the finish line. even the african runners who she beat were like you know what, i would be sad but america has had it hard, yeah. it's about time something went right for them. you can take it this year. you can take it. oh, and this weekend wasn't just big for the running community. the world of hip-hop had news of its own. >> sean combs form earle la known as p. diddy decided to mark his 40th birthday by changing his name yet again, have a look. >> i decided to change my name again. i am just not-- i'm just not who i am, before. i'm something different. so my new name is love, aka

so many names. but happy birthday, diddy. let's move on now to some international news. 2017 has been a difficult year for japan. china has been increasingly aggressive in imclaing the east china sea. north korea launched missiles all around their country. and now this. >> president trump has kicked off a five nation tour of asia with a visit to japan. >> while here in japan the president has talked about-- urging japanese businesses to do more to sell goods and make goods inside the united states. >> they also spent much of their time discussing the north korean threat. >> there has never been such a close relationship between the leaders of two countries, these two countries, japan and the united states. melania and ri deeply grateful for the warm welcome we received in your remarkable country. >> trevor: poor japan, man. once again they have to deal with an out of control monster with tiny hands.

(laughter) now-- (applause) now the reason japan needs trump is because japan needs america. for the last 70 years japan has relied on the u.s. for military protection because something happened to japan's military, i don't know. anyway president trump got there this weekend and judging from the itinerary the japanese have been stalking trump's pint pinterest. >> the two leaders had hamburgers, played nine rounds of golf and fed koi fish at the palace. the two leaders met at a golf club signing hats made for the occasion, donald and shinzo make alliance even greater. >> trevor: that's so cute. donald and shinzo have could mem rattive hats. it looks less like a diplomatic supernear and more more like a novel tee gift from a bachelorette party. i am surprised it didn't have a

penis sticking out of it, that is all that was mission. by the way how did they go from america make america great again to donald and shindzo make alliance even greater. is that one of those awkward translation things, the same way fast and the furious was released in japan as angry cars zoom at speed excess starring vin diesel and crazy instagram tiereese. of course, of course, the president of the united states didn't fly all the way to japan just to play golf and eat hamburgers. which by the way is what he already does in america all the time. so it is like he's in japan and he's eating hamburgers? trump is the kind of tourist who travels to an exotic land but still goes to their mcdonald's. you know folks, it's so different here n my country, i order a big mack and fries. but over here, have i to order a big mac and fries! but, but trump wasn't just there for the golf and burger. he was also there to tell japan whose boss. >> we have built one of theworld's most powerful economies. i don't know if it's as good as ours, i think not. and we're going to try and keep it that way. but you'll be second. >> trevor: you know, someone should tell donald trump to always stop speaking after his first sentence. because every time that's where it goes wrong. i am sorry about the death of your husband. but he knew what he signed up for. the charlottesville nazis were bad, but there were some very fine people. i have the utmost respect for mothers, when women have babies their boobs get real big. it is always the second line. and japan's prime minister didn't even flinch when trump

basically dissed him. but i guess that is because this isn't the first time that trump's mouth has brought great shame to his people. >> donald trump according to the japan times newspaper made comments that he couldn't understand why a country of samurai warriors didn't shoot down north korean missiles. >> trevor: you know, i don't know what is worse, that trump thinks japan still has samurai, or that he thinks samurai warriors were trained in missile device-- defense. i feel like trump only knows two things about japan and neither of them is right. like i wouldn't be shocked if 2078 trump said i don't understand how the same people without can catch shrimp in their hadds at benihanna can't intercept a missile, folks. so now that was part one of trump's trip to asia. tomorrow he heads to south korea where he will probably shove chop sticks up his nose and pretend that he is a walrus. so stay tuned because we will be chatting with senator jeff flake

(applause) welcome to the show. >> thanks for having me on. >> trevor: so good to have you here, especially considering recent events. a lot of people saw you make a speech that is i guess sent goose bumps down people's spines because you came out and spoke out snot not just against the ideas that donald trump was so pro, but also to the very fundamental ideals of what american politics should be. discourse, sharing of ideas, people moving forward, and understanding of fact. when you were writing that speech and when you are about to embark on that moment, do you also realize how crazy the situation is that you were in? >> i think so. i think so. i mean for a long time i have been concerned. way back before the campaign, when donald trump started, you

know, years ago questioning barack obama's birth place, for example, that's wrong. you just shouldn't do that. it has no place in politics. he's continued. and he continued through the campaign and has continued through the presidency. so what i wanted to say in that speech was this is not normal. and-- but we shouldn't accept it as normal. >> trevor: right. >> this kind of degradation of political culture. and it really strikes me, and i think a lot of us, we shouldn't assume that our kids should have to think that this is normal. >> trevor: yes. >> how politics are waged. and so i do think that it was important to say. >> trevor: you are saying it's not normal means one thing but what about it not being normal should we be worried about? >> well, i think when discourse is as donald trump has waged politics, when you can't say anything good about your opponents, when you refer to your opponents on the other side

of the aisle as clowns or losers, then in order to fix the big things that we need to fix, and there are some big things out there, $20 trillion in debt, we need tax reform, we need immigration reform, these things are only fixed if we reach across the aisle when both parties say all right, let's share the political risk. you can't do that when you have a president who just assumes the worst in people. >> trevor: you are working in an environment where you write, create and mold legislation. we saw just yesterday the unfortunate events that unfolded in texas. once again, the debate around gun control spirals. you know, into every sphere, twitter, facebook, people are fighting on tv. i honestly do wonder as a lawmaker, why is it, why does it feel that nothing gets done, there are thoughts and prayers and yet no laws get passed.

is there something you can and should be doing? wump stocks is a good example, after what happened in vegas, that seemed like okay, there will be some move and yet nothing has been done. >> right. i think with regard to bump stocks i think something will be done. the agencies are looking at it now. the agency that implements, the alcohol, tobacco and fire arms. >> trevor: but they can't do anything about it, because of a loophole that prohints them from investigating something that isn't a fire arm. and will that loophole be closed. it feels like there is a roundabout of everything, they go the atf can handle it. the aff goes we can't handle this part, that is not a fire arm and there say loophole that excludes us from investigating that. >> i do think they can. they can google that, any device that makes a semiautomatic weapon act like an automatic weapon should be banned. if they can't, congress should legislation. and i'm there to support that i said all along you shouldn't be able to make a semiautomatic weapon an automatic weapon for all intendeds and purposes.

another thing that we need with the recent shooting, it seems as though the air force didn't inform local authorities that this person had been convicted in a military court, information sharing doesn't happen. it doesn't happen with regard to those with mental illnesses either. the system is incomplete, the know what other state has done. so those are the things we can and should legislate, i have sponsored legislation in the past to do that. >> trevor: before i let you go, you have an interesting relationship with regards to immigration and workers coming in from other countries because you grew up, your family was in cattle ranches so you had to hire immigrants to come and work. when you look at that, someone said jeff flake, why didn't your family hire americans, why did she they hire mexican people to come and help with your kealt, how do you respond. >> i did grow up on a ranch,

what, i grew up on a ranch with ten brothers and sisters, it still wasn't enough to work the ranch. >> trevor: right. >> we hired mexican my grant labor. they worked hard. sometimes we would hire my friends from school, who would last a day or two. but i mentioned in an op ed i recently wrote, a man by the name of manual chieda who came across when he was 16 years old, worked on our ranch for 24er yoos and then raised his family. and living the american dream. as is his family. all he had to offer was a strong back and the willingness to work. >> trevor: right. >> and america is et abouter because he's here. and i think that that has been the immigrant experience more than anything. i have never been able to look at people like him, he came initially illegally but have i never been able to look at him and people like him as a criminal class. they wanted to make a better life for their family. they are americans by choice. and obviously these days we can't have open boards,

moments from our lives that we have withheld but i done know, there's not too much that we're holding back. it's just the same situation in a different surrounding. and you know, there's a moment or two that pops up where we're like, i don't want to shall-- . >> trevor: you don't want to share that. >> i don't want to share that or we might talk each other into sharing something that we didn't want to season three will be interesting if it happens. >> trevor: let's talk about the writers room. you have received a lot of praise and credit for having an all-women writers room. was that an intentional choice or did you just go with oh, these are the people who best understand the story i'm trying to tell? >> well, being in this writers room you have to really be showing up willing to share everything. and we have-- we had a man on

the writers, in the writers room last season. and this season it was just, it really did feel like these are the six people that will work, will work on the show perfectly, what we're looking for, and it is kind of a group therapy. i mean really, like every other day somebody's having a bit of a boo huai-- boo hoo, and st a comedy but yeah, it's very real moments that are being touched upon. >> trevor: if you were to create a season three, where would you take the journey. where does tig go? >> tig goes probably even deeper in to exploring love and, i'm
