captioning sponsored by comedy central from comedy central headquarters in new york, the daily show is trevor noah, 2018 again, america. [cheers and applause] >> trevor: welcome to the daily show. i'm trevor noah and we are live. let's get into it. take a seat. take a seat.
11:01 pm
did i say we're live, i mean we are live. anything can go wrong, anything can happen. i can say anything they can't edit it out. scoobity-bop-jaba-blap. how about that. i don't know about you but i was nervous today. the whole day updating social media waiting to hear the results but now the votes are in and it's official, idris elba sexiest person alive. oh man. else so worried he would lose the vote. there was another vote that had me worried today. yes, the mid terms. the day when voters were officially going to decide, is america racist or is it openly racist. right now some people are like it's racist, why don't you go back to south africa because it's also racist, that's why i like it here it reminds me of
11:02 pm
home. it was touch and go for a while today. the blue wave was looking like a smurf and what was worse that the results just wouldn't come in. the whole day. like the last few hours it's just been too close to call, too early to call. we texted america u up and all we could see is that little typing bubble. just tell me, america, do you want a smack or not. but after a night sponsored by pepto bismol it's official, the democrats have taken the house. [crowd cheering] okay, okay. wow, you guys are almost as he can siets --excited as rachel m.
11:03 pm
she melted into a pile of i voted stickers. before we get to the results please welcome my guest roy wood, jr., everybody. i only have one question for you, did you vote. >> oh yeah, man, about five, six times, man. >> trevor: i don't think that's how it's supposed to work but i appreciate your enthusiasm. we'll be checking in with roy but we have votes still coming in but there are some things we do know for certain, right. this has been a night of firsts. in colorado has made history as the first openly gay man. why has it taken that that means, colorado, all you are now gay. i don't make the rules so congratulations.

11:05 pm
>> the first man on the moon. >> trevor: it was like they were going to july together at the same time -- jump together at the same time. if we found out that was the plan and then neal is like your shoes are on fire and one small step for man. who goes first it doesn't matter. in texas it's being reported that ted cruz has owe fernally defeated beto o'rourke. look, i mean beyonce did enforce beto so -- endorsed beto. this guy has been re-elected now so we have to start showing him some respect. so tonight no jokes about ted cruz so congratulations well done senator ted cruz. now you may be surprised that ted cruz won the popularity contest but we went to texas earlier today and you could tell that the vote wasn't going to be as one-sided as you'd think. >> people are saying that the

11:07 pm
>> trevor: all right everybody, thank you so much. [crowd cheering] so tonight is a big night. we have most of the results that matter and for more on tonight's election results let's turn back to my man at the desk, give it up one more time. it looks like the democrats have retaken the house so now the question is what does this mean for america's future. >> the future? the future's already started. now that the democrats have the house america has descended into a socialist chaos just like trump said it would. the worst is venezuela with white people. all the socialism but none of the rhythm. >> trevor: look i don' man i dot know if i would trust what trump said. he said the republicans would keep the house. so this has got to be a tough

loss for him. >> tough loss are you kidding me, this is a great night for donald trump. he's sitting back celebrating with a big juicy cheeseburger and some ice cream. that's the fourth scoop sauce tonight. trevor the a la mode is for a special occasion. >> trevor: why would trump be celebrating. the republicans lost the house. how is this a good night. >> because when all his policies go wrong he has someone to blame. stock market dropping blame the democrats. heard by trade, blame nancy pelosi. even the little stuff he could blame the democrats. oh the couch is getting repo sellsed and more than hub is done, that's on you maxine waters. you see now trump has the scapegoat. everybody loves the scapegoat. i love to blame everything on my dog. track mud in the house, it's the

[crowd cheering] >> trevor: so the democrats road a wave of enthusiasm to retake the house but as we set earlier the wave was less -- and more -- and one of the reasons it was so tight the lack of enthusiasm in some of the most important voting districts. so earlier we sent michael kosta to find out more. >> thanks trevor. i'm here in california's 48th district which is a critical house race but like me there's a shit ton of people here who
11:10 pm
won't be voting and we all have our reasons. why aren't you voting today. >> i don't have the time. >> right takes time. not like there's a polling place right behind you that you could vote right now. did you vote today or did you plan on voting today. >> no. >> why? >> i'm just kind of too lazy. i got a lot of things i'm procrass noting about and it didn't make the list. >> so you have a list that you will later put off. >> i'm not voting. >> tell me why. >> i'm not interested you would say. >> have you voted in previous elections. >> no. i'm not registered. >> is there something you have voted in in the past. >> american idol. >> are you planning on voting this election. >> i'm not. politicians don't serve. they're not out there they don't have the same connection surfers have with our oagz and environment. >> in politicians surfed would that change things. >> it may. special things happen and

the same kind of thing playing out tonight and what we think we need to understand there are other dynamics at play here. something called the bradley effect where a lot of people say they're going to vote say for a black candidate and they saw the polling place and they get to the ballot and they're like i don't know if i can pull the lever for the black guy. fortunately we've seen a lot of that in this election and i don't know if that's the only reason why abrams is down and gillum lost but that's certainly contributes to it. i think a lot of folk don't understand how race and racism play in this country. >> trevor: it's too soon to say for certain but the tracks have the house. does this mean that america's starting to toward a different cross that means the democrats can begin a fight back. do the republicans reassess what their message is with trump. >> i think that means this is the beginning of the fight frankly. you have a democratic house to announce subpoena pretty much anyone they want, they can start the investigations. they can basically do what
