[cheers and applause] ♪ ♪ >> ronny: welcome to "the daily show"! i'm ronny chieng. we've got so much to talk about tonight. eggen the stallion is featuring on the kamala harris track. donald trump makes him black friends and a performance by black pumas. let's get into our ongoing coverage of "indecision 2024"! let's kick things off with donald trump. if he was doing really well with black voters when he was running against joe biden, probably because black people don't [bleep] with ghosts but kamala harris is now stealing back some of his flack support. so today trump sat down with an interview with the national association of black journalists and things got off to a rocky

start. >> a lot of people did not think it was appropriate for you to be here today. you have pushed false claims about some of your rivals, from nikki haley to former president barack obama, saying they were not born in the united states, which is not true. you have told four congresswomen women of color who were american citizens to go back to where they came from. you have used words like "animal" and "rabbit" to describe black district attorneys. you've had dinner with a white supremacist at your mar-a-lago resort. so my question, sir, why should black voters trust you after you have used language like that? >> ronny: tough question... but hey, at least this is a good chance for former president trump to address the concerns of black voters by answering with civility and grace. >> well, first of all, i don't think i've ever been asked the question in such a horrible manner, first question. you don't even say hello, how

are you. are you with abc? because i think they are a fake news network, a terrible network. >> ronny: okay, okay, not a great start talking to a room full of black journalists, but you can still recover! >> i think it's a very rude introduction. i don't know exactly why you would do something like that. you invited me under false pretense. and then you were a half an hour late. it just so we understand, i have too much respect for you to be late. i think it's a very nasty question. i have answered the question. i have been the best president for the black population since abraham lincoln. geico better than president johnson, who signs the voting rights act? >> for you to start off a question and answer. matt, especially when you're 35 minutes late because you couldn't get your equipment to work, it's a hostile manner, i think it's a disgrace. >> ronny: wow, trump was like "listen up, black people, you are always late, your microphones are ghetto, and i'm

abraham lincoln." i think he just won the black vote. for more politicians or anyone else on earth that would have been the low point of the interview but because it was donald trump, it somehow got worse. >> do you believe that vice president kamala harris is only on the ticket because she is a black woman? >> i think it's maybe a little bit different. i've known her a long time indirectly, not directly very much. she was always of indian heritage. and she was only promoting indian heritage. i didn't know she was black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black. so i don't know, is she indian or issue black? >> she has always identified as a black woman, she went to a historically black college. >> i respect either one but she obviously doesn't, because she was indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and became a black person. and i think somebody should look into that too when you ask and continue in a very hostile, nasty tone.

>> ronny: i don't know what's worse, that he thinks she turned from indian to black, or that he thinks someone should look into that. who should look into that? does he think the fbi is the "federal black inspectors -- investigators?" and she turned from indian to black. she's indian and black. what does he think happens? up and quote when the time is right, indians go into a cocoon, they play some drake and they come out black." it's very clear that trump doesn't quite know how to handle kamala harris right now. he's trying to find the angle of attack and today he was hitting her race, yesterday he was hitting her age. >> she is younger, but i mean, she's fixed years old. a lot of people -- i didn't know she was 60, i thought she was a little younger, but she's exceed. >> ronny: i guess trump just discovered that black don't crack? this is going to be the first time he does be birtherrism as a

compliment. "show us the birth certificate, because you don't look a day over 50. drop the skincare routine, girl!" at that trump spent the rest of the day googling how old other black people are. "morgan freeman 200 years old question mark?" to be fair, doe does have substantive criticisms. but he can't seem to say them without making it gross and personal. like when he asked about how he would do in negotiation foreign leaders. >> i think they will look to walk all over her. she will be so easy for them, she will be like a play toy. they will look at her and say "we can't believe we got so lucky." they are going to walk all over her. and i don't want to say as to why, but a lot of people understand it. >> ronny: i don't want to say why she would be a bad president, but you know, the dash and the dash and the fellas get it.

i'm pretty sure kamala can handle world leaders. she did just overthrow the president of the united states. [laughter] and also, nobody was easier to manipulate than donald trump. a foreign leaders just had to roll out the red carpet and trump treated them like a best friend. saudi arabia bone sawed an american journalist and trump was fine with it because they let him touch an orb. i'm pretty sure none of this is getting to kamala. right now she's on top of the world because she's enjoying life as the democrats' new messiah. >> and when i turned up and turned out for vice president harris and a rap star came with a new slogan for campaign merge. megan thee stallion and others made this the largest crowd of harris' young campaign. more than 10,000 people filled a downtown arena. >> well, donald, as the saying goes, if you've got something to say... say it to my face! >> thousands waited hours to see

harris speak. >> does she make it easier for democrats to win georgia in november? >> yes! >> ronny: "we are so excited we don't have to vote for joe biden anymore! you know, i do feel bad for biden. everyone is going crazy about kamala and he's at home with covid going "who is kamala?" and i've never seen so much joy for a statistical tie. this is like when people cheer after their plane lands. it's supposed to land! that's the bare minimum. for more on enthusiasm around vice president harris we go live to one of her rallies in houston with michael kosta. [cheers and applause] michael, what's the feeling down there? >> it's electric, ronny! i haven't seen democrats this excited since they came out with that fifth covid booster. >> ronny: they do sound pumped. what can the democrats build on this momentum? >> they definitely can, and there's only one way to do it. kamala harris has to drop out.

joining me at the desk, thanks so much. you are so cool. i feel like your band right now is in such a great place. correct me if you feel differently but you are in that sweet spot of -- your big enough to sell at radio city and people of your music but you are still that kind of underground vibe where you don't have to play to the mainstream sensibility or do anything you don't want to do. do you feel that way? >> it's a great place to be because we feel in charge of our self-expression, which is amazing as artists and human beings. selling out radio city here in new york is still really cool for us, so we don't take it for granted. it's been amazing and just being in here in the smaller tv audience situation is super dop. if [cheers and applause] >> ronny: for authenticity is coming through in the second album i feel like. i can still feel it. that was one of my questions for

you, do you feel that transition from making her first album where you are just pure self-expression and doing what you want to do to the second album where there's expectations or and now. did you feel that kind of pressure, did it change your creative approach to it? >> most definitely. with the last album i was really lucky because of my other half, he came to the table with such a knowledge and such a sensitivity towards the culture, towards the style of music. >> ronny: you can say black people. >> yeah, black people. but it was really easy for me to kind of adopt the character that was being presented by way of the canvas that is soul music. he likes some of my songs and those songs kind of helped catapult black pumas. you know, it's been really amazing, but for the second

album there was way much more, you know, pressure. but i was raised in an artist household and i was always taught to kind of genuinely okay with expressing myself, and thankfully, the people have kind of allowed it. it feels nice to be here. >> ronny: you haven't changed yet. [laughs] >> not yet. >> ronny: i know you are still with an indie music label. do you feel like this that can album with the more anticipation and the success of the first one, do you feel like you have more resources now? how was it actually affecting how you make music for the second album? >> we did so well the first time around i kind of immediately learned that our team, which is a great team, they were kind of relying on us for direction, so that came as a really big surprise. while it doesn't sound super

like a big deal, it came as a surprise because i don't know that we were for sure as to what direction we wanted to go in. so we just continued to be genuine, continued to be honest, and it's led us into some places that have been really new and very cool, and we are still observing people's reaction. so that's been really nice. >> ronny: you came up kind of playing smaller gigs, coming up in radio city and everything is really happening for you. do you feel like -- do you still go back to get the energy? >> most definitely. i'm lucky because i was busking before. everybody hated me. i was busking in santa monica, los angeles. i went from los angeles to austin, texas, where there is a live show for anybody and everybody every single day, so to be interjected into such a

culture where the artistry is just embraced in this on he uncy way, that opened my eyes to not having to pay to play but being able to play and really just integrate in the culture, so we played see boys, which is a smaller venue, s shotgun club. >> announcer: and its original energy, and you are killing it. >> and there's the sense that you really have to work hard because there's friends that come. >> ronny: you are like trying to prove yourself versus radio city, where everyone is there -- >> most definitely. and they want to say briefly that we were just very lucky from the very get-go. as soon as i met adrian posada, we had such amazing chemistry. i'm a creative and an artist first and it helped to be with a partner who was just knowledgeable enough to help me find a container for that

musically. of and to then see the stage in such a real way, i grew up acting. it's not that much different. so to be in that situation in austin, texas, it was like the perfect place to cultivate the life for formative element. >> ronny: i heard you recently went to a silent meditation retreat? >> most definitely. i discovered what posner threw a girlfriend of mine and it changed my world. i've done the retreat twice, it's free. they put me up for free. >> ronny: what's the conditions? you just have to shut the [bleep] up? >> exactly. you get there, it's maybe 100 students, five instructors, you learn the technique, which is easy to learn. >> ronny: just to shut up. the technique for that is acquired skill. what happens if you don't shut up? do they kick you out and mike

how did they kick you out? >> you can get kicked out. for sure! [laughs] you can get kicked out but the technique is to get you on a vehicle to the source of how and/or where our subconscious mind is reacting to, you know, our thoughts and things that might've happened in the past, so to get to the bottom of it it's a technique to do so. >> ronny: yeah, that some horrible...
