high where it's ease city for major league hitters to put the head of the bat on the ball. as you can see jason giambi pulled the ball down. just don't want to make bad pitches when guys with that danger can hurt you that much at bases loaded. the walks thing. i can't say it enough times. nothing good ever happens after a walk. one walk tonight followed by a second walk and then followed by a double down in the corner and three runs score. now if they don't give up those two walks there it's an entirely different ball game. >> plaque and mount it here on the set. nothing good ever happens after a walk. time now to take look at the at&t player of the game. it turns out to be trevor cahill with 42% of the vote. couple earned runs, did not walk a batter, struck out five. that's a look at the at&t player of the game. now when we come back we'll have a little bit about chat about jason berken effort tonight. gave up a lot of doubles and the orioles lose to oakland 9- 4. reminder to meet adam jones the
12:01 am
star doctor fielder from noon to 1:00 at the wendy's in front of hit cinema. visit masn sports.com. just a delightful person to talk to. when we go back he had a rough go. no doubt about that. look at statistics for tonight. he gave up so many doubles it tied a record set by mike. he gave up seven doubles in the game. and he gave up seven doubles back in '96. tonight the numbers three and a third innings, seven hits,
12:02 am
allowed nine runs, three walks. and as you said, rick, earlier the walks all scored. it's tough. >> you look at the chart the way that we do this and you see that after every walk is a base hit. jason giambi has always been a dangerous hitter. we just talked about it without seeing the clip about how many good pitches they had to hit. the oakland a's are the worst hitting team in the american league right now. it's not tough to put the ball in play when you get good pitches and a double that cost two more rbis. this game here you see another dip by kennedy going to the gap
12:03 am
too. seems like all the pitches are a clone of one another. all right there in the strike zone but belt high or above. berken had a real tough night and something he should learn by because even the catcher should learn by this zaun was behind home plate and he knows. he knows move the target down in the zone. you have to get the ball down and that's one adjustment the orioles did not make tonight. >> the a's have hit the ball hard. when you look back at the 18 runs they've scored, three swings accounted for nine of those runs. jack cust and matt holliday and tonight a three run double by
12:04 am
jason giambi. but in this series .323. 18 with nine doubles, runners in scoring position batting .385. eight doubles tonight. >> a team that's been down most of the season, the a's i said was the worst hitting team in the american league and all of a sudden decide they're going to be more aggressive. they won a couple games on the road, come back here and now going to jump on you first pitch, second pitch. get a feel for that right out of the bat and start changing speeds more than you have done. yesterday jeremy guthrie four consecutive hits right off the bat and everybody hit the ball hard.
12:05 am
seven hits his first time through. you've got to do something. if you're not changing speeds you can't throw them off balance because they're being too aggressive they're going to go hit any pitch you throw there if you continue to settle in in the batter's box. you don't have to hit batters, throw in off the plate, move their feet. these are things you don't see. they just sit out there and keep throwing the ball in there and the a's keep swinging the bat hard. seven doubles tonight. somebody's got to go down some place. somebody has to move them off the plate. somebody make an impact on the line up other than just getting
12:06 am
the ball down the middle of the plate. >> luke scott continues to hit the home runs. look back at the last 12 home runs hit by the orioles half a dozen by each. reimold coming up from the big leagues three run shot tonight. now batting clean up last 13 hits, look at reimold he has 15 hits since coming to the big leagues and six have been home runs with 12 rbis. what a combination but nobody else is doing anything. >> they're both settled in their swings. seeing the ball very well. break it down, stay back, see
12:07 am
the ball and hit it. no thinking about the mechanics whatsoever, my hands high enough, striding too soon. both sitting back nice and comfortable and waiting for a ball in their zone. if you have seen this swing same swing he hit his first home run. and then game winning home run in baltimore. same thing with luke scott. he just slammed that foot down and let his hands do the work. the guy is massively strong. he might be one of the strongest guys in the american league through his arms and hands. if you've ever shook hands with him like i have it's unbelievable how strong he really is. he's settled up so well in the strike zone. he sees every ball well. doesn't matter curve ball, change up. stays back long, keeps his hand back.
12:08 am
when he makes contact there's no ballpark that's going to keep them. >> look back at stats. reimold and scott 30 of the last 63 runs the orioles have scored have been knocked in by these guys. and luke scott didn't come off the disabled list until may 27. that's a bilgier when you think about that. >> i think it's his 14th home run of the season and he's just putting up big numbers. he's got to stay in the middle of that order for me and maybe a four slot for quite a while because he's that hot and ride this wave for a long time. nobody else is putting up any numbers in that line up right now. >> gook go back out to oakland with the orioles manager. it's being brought to you by verizon wireless. >> dave joining us here in oakland. this hasn't been an easy couple of ball games. trying to battle back in this one but just too far behind. >> boy, we've sure made oakland real good offensive club the last couple nights. they've come out swinging the bats very well. we didn't stay away from the big inning. back to back innings they put cooking numbers up for them. we came back and got some runs late. fell behind way too much. some pitches that we'd like to have back especially with two strikes that we left over the middle of the plate. >> dave, when you have a young star like jason berken you can kind of expect there might be a hiccup on the road.
12:09 am
tonight he didn't get many pitches down in you can design a plan that fits your budget and protects you even as your life changes. the ll us at the nzone at all. >> no. he pitched up. i thought the last time he pitched he was real good down and you n count up was down. he didn't establish any of his pitches at all tonight. seemed like he was trying to feel for them. they jumped on him early. they didn't make adjustments. he's a young guy and you well know you come into a team like this first time you pitch against them you on the road, trying to probably get it done all at once. he'll learn from it. >> we have a concert going on behind us so we'll stop it right there.
12:10 am
see you tomorrow. thanks very much. dave joining us here as the concert begins. back to you. >> all right. thanks to gary and buc. we thank dave also presented by verizon wireless. a lot of fireworks. sometimes the announcers have to get out early for the fireworks. when we come back we'll look at the american league high lights. we'll show you what tampa bay did today against the yankees. that story up next when we continue o's x tra post game show here on masn. welcome back to our masn

studios. orioles lose to the oakland a's 9-4. birds now drop six of their last zone games. ya son giambi came through with a three run double. three run homer from reimold. his sixth since he came up to the orioles. did see the ball rolling around there. take a load down on the farm report tonight. norfolk lost to toe lee doe. three for four with a home run and rbi. third home run of the season. now three home run in the game. frederick won over same im. game one beat lakewood 3-2. avery 3-3 with a run scored.
12:12 am
lakewood beat dell mar have in game two. high score of six. that's a look at our down on the farm report. speaking of down on the farm, sees coming up the line and trying to get with the ma jr. league roster of the orioles. >> we want to give him a nice full year in the minor leagues. double a. hopefully i would think probably move him to triple a to intensify the competition a little bit. but just looking at his stuff you can -- when you walk into a ballpark and he's on the mound you know this guy's a major league pitcher. his stuff is second to none. a lot of guys in this league.
12:13 am
he's probably one guy that's got the three pitches that are all major league caliber and above. he's a big strong guy. i think that's the biggest thing about him. when i saw him was his size. >> jake will pitch tomorrow for buoy. 5-43 right now. he has walked 23 and struck out 65 which are excellent numbers. and 4 base hits. and holding opponents to a .219 batting average. a year away you think? >> well, could be. i think the orioles are going to have to take a chance on him pretty soon whether it be at the end of this season or the beginning of next year.
12:14 am
he's everything rick was talking about. he is big, he's strong, he's got very good mechanics. he's got four very good pitches. of all of the good young pitchers that the orioles have, i think this guy's got the best chance of being the ace of the staff. you give him a couple years of experience and i think he'll take over that role if he stays healthy. the i think thing i like the most right over the top good hard fastball, good rising football. he can make it move but he's got a very good off speed pitches to go with it. the good curve ball. very good slider. doesn't use it as much and an excellent change up. this is what keeps hitters off
12:15 am
balance. i'm surprised they found some way to beat him three times so far this season. but in the minor leagues that can happen when you don't play on good infield and good back up defense as you're going to get here at the major league level. he's a can't miss guy and a guy i would want to develop as my ace. >> jake pitching tomorrow. time now to look at american league east division highlights. weapon begin with ebb former defensive coordinator in new york. home tore left center scoring upton and crawford. the rays lead 5-3 at this point with the home run. and joe comes to a single off maly know. and that gives the victory in

12:18 am
the or joels have to make a roster move because of the emergency anen connectmy. the orioles will have to use robert at shortstop now. pretty much the rest of the way probably over the next three to four weeks. go back to oakland where amber is standing by with the orioles relief pitcher david hernandez. >> did you know going into this game they were considering you out of the bullpen? were you ready for that? >> yeah. they told me on thursday i would be coming out of the bullpen for this series. i wasn't up yesterday by they told me i would definitely be up today or tomorrow. i was ready. >> how different was that for you? looking back through your minor
12:19 am
league career you hadn't been a bullpen pitcher. >> definitely a different situation. coming out of the bullpen i was able to have enough time to get ready, get loose and go out there. >> did you feel lyric obviously had a good outing, did you feel it put you in a good position? >> yeah. you have to be ready right away. i was able to calm my nerves and be able to throw strikes and make good pitches. >> pretty easy to simply fie the team's in a hole and your one job is to put up zeros. >> i wanted to come in. berken didn't go the way he wanted it too. i wanted to hold the team there
12:20 am
and give my team a chance at giving a run to catching them. >> be able to do two and two- thirds innings you said you felt like you weren't as sharp as before. >> having a good slider tonight was key for me. kept the batters off balance. my first two starts i didn't really have the feel for my slider. tonight it was really low. >> thanks. >> thanks amber. >> david hernandez with amber. tomorrow conclude the three game series. rich hill gets the start for the bird. >> he has been pitching well for the orioles as of late. he's established that curve ball. i don't think anybody in the league can hit. they almost have to just take that pitch and go ahead and wait for the fastball because they're just not going to hit it. when he keeps his fastball, curve ball in the strike zone and football up in the strike zone, he is very very tough to get any runs off of. he's a guy now that's really establishing himself with consistency that starters need. he's had one shaky game so far this season. the rest have been very good. >> back to oakland real fast and try to check in with jason berken. >> obviously i know you're disappointed walking away from that occupanting. from the first batter what did you think wasn't working today. >> falling behind. i wasn't making quality pitches when they had two strikes. wasn't able to put guys away when i was ahead. for the most part about a two ball and three ball counts and give them credit. they took advantage of a lot of
12:21 am
my mistakes. >> of course the orioles wrap up this series. we'll join you at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon. we'll have another edition of dempsey's dugout. he'll talk with the orioles 1st baseman. that and much more when we begin our coverage at 3:30. once again the oakland a's beat the oh's 9-4. two run double and rbi double. we'll see you tomorrow at 3:30. boss: so you've been doing a nice job out there helping people save money on car insurance. gecko: aw thank you, sir. boss: but i think there are a few other things you can say about what a reliable company geico is. gecko: right. uh, well maybe how geico's the third-largest car insurance company in america? nice tidbit there. boss: exactly. and i've been thinking, looking a bit more businesslike might help too. gecko: oh my. uhhh, no it's, what's, what's the word...
